Artist: BIRIGWA
Title: Birigwa
Label: PORTER RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: PRCD 1500CD
"Birigwa was a 23 year-old African acoustic guitarist and vocalist who cut this record in the early '70s with the help of jazz players such as Vinnie Johnson (drums), Phil Morrison (bass) and Stan Strickland (flute & saxophone). Soaring vocals and strong rhythmic grooves dominate this unique mixture of Afro-jazz, heavily leaning towards African music, originally released in 1972 on the Seeds label."

Artist: NATURAL FOOD
Title: Natural Food
Label: PORTER RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: PRCD 1501CD
"A funky, soulful and bluesy jazz record. A unique recording that defies any easy categorization. Great grooves, soulful singing on three tracks ('Siren Song,' 'Gin House Blues' and 'See See Rider') by Latifah (Brenda James) and lots of electric piano are liberally spread around on this recording, plus a wide range of great guitar styles from the likes of Lance Gunderson, Paul Lenart and John Abercrombie. Originally a private pressing released in 1972, this is the first time it's been issued on CD."

Artist: LANCASTER UNIT, THE BYARD
Title: Live at Macalester College
Label: PORTER RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: PRCD 1502CD
"These rare recordings made between 1970-1973 are now available on CD for the first time. Transferred from the original master tapes, this recording finds saxophonist and free-jazz legend Byard Lancaster playing his trademark sound in a live setting. At times the music is very wild and free, at other points, it is quiet and melancholy. Musicians include: J.R. Mitchell (percussion), Calvin Hill (bass), Paul Morrison (electric bass), Lester Lumley (conga), Sid Simmons (piano) and Joe Hunter (bass). Tracks are: '1324,' 'Last Summer,' 'War World,' 'Live At Macalester' and bonus tracks 'World In Me' and 'Thought.'"

Artist: DANIEL QUINTET, TED
Title: Tapestry
Label: PORTER RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $16.50
Catalog #: PRCD 1503CD
"A truly remarkable blend of '70s fusion and free-jazz, available for the first time on CD, transferred from the original master tapes, with one additional bonus track. This recording from 1974 was recorded at Ornette Coleman's Artist House and has a very spacious feel to it, due in part to the addition of a Fender Rhodes, a vibraphone and two electric basses. Great line-up of Jerome Cooper (The Revolutionary Ensemble), Khan Jamal, Richard Daniel (who along with Ted Daniel co-founded Brute Force) and Tim Ingles. A must for those interested in Miles Davis' '70s work."
