Title: Rare Youth
Label: RARE YOUTH
Format: 2CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: RY 001CD
Debut CD on Geoff Mullen's label, featuring new music from Providence, RI. "Here it is...a year in the making...a collection of new music from one of the most fertile and constantly changing locales in the union. Featuring over two hours of music and spread out over thirty-eight tracks, Rare Youth brings together some of the most exciting artists at work in Providence right now: Work/Death, Kites, Black Pus, Xerxes, Heart2Heart, Russian Tsarcasm, Blue Shift, Lazy Magnet, Byron House, Teenage Waistband, Black Forest/Black Sea, Unicorn Hard-On, Synb, Leif Goldberg, Siege Engine, Lucky Dragons AND MANY MANY MORE. Sequenced to highlight the great diversity of musical stylings in this small town, this CD takes you on a smooth ride down the many colorful roads of: power pop psych noise, abandoned dronescapes, reckless free improvisation, emo power electronics, late night elven dance music, epic psych rock, shredded throat guitar doom, john carpenter-esque synth despair, witty no-fi punkish noise, genuine teenage love songs, total garbage, marching bands, etc. etc. With the attention that Providence has received for being a hub of louder-than-life, experimental music/art, this compilation tries to provide an updated snapshot of the current subterranean goings-on. It includes many of the artists who are responsible for bringing such acclaim and attention to this small community -- Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt, Black Pus), Mat Brinkman, Leif Goldberg, Jo Dery, Christopher Forgues -- while also calling attention to some of the new and young artists who are taking things in different and exciting directions -- Russian Tsarcasm, Alberich, Heart2Heart, Blue Shift, Summer City, Byron House. There are also a handful of tracks featuring visiting artists (Pedestrian Deposit, Brian Miller and Kevin Shields...). Hand-packaged in a double-CD gatefold sleeve."

Artist: KESZLER, ELI
Title: Livingston
Label: RARE YOUTH
Format: LP
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: RY 010LP
"Debut LP by drummer/multi-instrumentalist Eli Keszler. A distinct composition in four parts, Livingston is a brooding and dark meditation for drums, crotales, guitar, clarinet, bowed percussion, Fender Rhodes, nail violin, and tapes. This is a rare kind of solo record, in that Eli's obvious instrumental virtuosity is tempered with a refined sense of composition and emotional space. You don't get the sense that this is the work of a single musician. Furious outbursts of raw percussive energy are kept in check by floating, distended melodies, and moments of silence are interrupted by the jarring clarity of high-pitched bells being bowed at close intervals. At times sounding like an Indonesian gamelan being put through the wringer, and at others like the massive drone of an aeolian harp being played by the wind -- Livingston effectively combines the influences of composers like Giacinto Scelsi and Iannis Xenakis with the improvisational energy and atmosphere of an artist like Keiji Haino. Clocking it at just over 23 minutes, this is a potent piece of music and an auspicious debut by a very talented young artist. Limited edition of 300, with hand-screened covers. Definitely recommended to fans of Mirror, Organum, ESPdisk, nmperign, Jandek, Evan Parker and Paul Lytton, Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, Phil Niblock, etc."

Artist: RUSSIAN TSARLAG/BLUE SHIFT
Title: Thank You For The Plastic Surgery You've Given Me/The Burrow
Label: RARE YOUTH
Format: LP
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: RY 011LP
"Mysterious and creepy emanations from two of Providence, RI's finest weirdos. Russian Tsarlag, formerly of Tampa, Florida, and a member of the damaged rock outfits Dynasty and Byron House, has been making his unique brand of bent pop music/performance art for a number of years now -- releasing an impressive amount of tapes, CDRs, DVDs and VHS on labels like Cephia's Treat, Unskilled Labor, Friends and Relatives, and Bonescraper Records, as well as self-released small-run publications such as Mutilator Magazine and Slime Freak. Thank You For The Plastic Surgery You've Given Me features some of Carlos' finest recorded work to date. Nine songs coated in the familiar Tsarlag orchestral residue -- repetitive and hypnotic themes, drugged-out floor toms, guitars held together with scissors and knives, 60-cycle hum, organ, tape loops, and Carlos' signature lyricism and delivery. Blue Shift has been a staple of live music in Providence for a number of years now, usually showing up with just a violin and a shredded bow, performing five-minute sets (or less) of intense and personal solo improvisations. The Burrow gives us thirteen tracks of wildly explorative solo music that utilizes violin, voice, tapes, drums and pre-recorded sounds to wondrous effect. From fast-paced violin scraping and tape-manipulated collages to the close-up sound of wheezing lungs and overdubbed violins, this is a hard-to-pin-down but essentially rewarding listen." Limited edition of 300, with letter-pressed black-on-white covers, a 32-page zine insert with illustrations/collage by Cybele Collins and Carlos Gonzales, pressed on green vinyl.
