Reissue of the 2nd Dr. Strangely Strange album from 1970, packaged in elaborate die-cut digipak cover (mimicking the original LP packaging, w/ fairly memorable Roger Dean artwork). "This band were one of many Incredible String Band inspired groups during the late '60s who wove together folk music with psychedelia. Their first album Kip of the Serenes is a minor classic and was well known at the time due to tracks from it appearing on low price compilations. Upon the 1970 release of Heavy Petting, the band's sound had progressed. The early songs on the album still have that whimsical, slightly surreal ISB-inspired sound but as the album progresses it introduces Celtic pipes and a driving folk rock edge. Interestingly this mixture of strummed acoustics and electrics with harmonising vocals sounds very similar to the Velvet Underground's final album of the same year Loaded which went on to become a rock classic. With a very young Gary Moore who went onto fame with Thin Lizzy as well as his own blues and rock solo career the guitar work is marvellous with searing folk-rock lead soloing. In 'Jove Is At Home' they find a delicacy that is similar to Synantheseia or Dulcimer with gentle vibes shimmering in the background. First CD reissue of the 3rd Clark Hutchinson album, originally released by Deram Records in 1971. "Andy Clark and Mick Hutchinson recorded four semi-legendary LPs of drug/scatter/raga-blues between 1969 and 1971. Mick Hutchinson was -- and still is -- a gifted guitarist who had began his career playing Indian style music with the tabla expert Sam Gopal. Although he never recorded with Sam Gopal's Dream -- a young guitarist named Lemmy eventually fulfilled this role -- Hutchinson and Gopal played together at the legendary 14 hour Technicolour Dream at London's Alexandra Palace in April of 1967. Later, he teamed up with the multi-instrumentalist Andy Clark. They both played a variety of instruments and this abundance of talent was brought to bear on the extraordinary two man album A=MH� which they recorded during two hectic 12 hour sessions in 1969. The band's last offering before splitting in 1971, Gestalt, was an altogether gentler, more reflective, disillusioned affair. Gestalt is eleven tracks shot through with sadness and regret. To some extent it's like listening to an extended meditation on Peter Green's 'Man of the World'. The lyrics are less explicit and less maudlin than on that particular track, but Andy Clark's vocals have the same poignancy, and Mick Hutchinson's guitar deftly and efficiently touches all the right spots. In case you're wondering, a gestalt is a pattern or structure -- an organised whole -- that is more than the sum of its parts. The idea originates with the German system of Gestalt psychology, which holds that perceptions and reactions are gestalts. A clear example is a melody as distinct from the separate notes that go to make it up. However you apply the term to this album, there is something here that transcends the eleven short tracks that go to make it up. It's elusive, like something half-remembered from a dream. Reissue of the first Nucleus album from 1970, packaged in elaborate die-cut digipak cover (Roger Dean artwork). "Britain's jazz scene embraced jazz-rock as soon as it was invented by Miles Davis. Formed in 1969 by trumpeter and flugelhornist Ian Carr, Nucleus were among the very first groups to fuse jazz and rock from the jazz perspective. Carr had been playing for almost ten years, first in the EmCee Five (featuring John McLaughlin on guitar) and then in the Rendell-Carr Group, which released five albums before 1969. Except for the 8-minute Torrid Zone, Nucleus' first album, Elastic Rock (Vertigo, 1970), was fragmented in brief vignettes that highlighted the group interplay without attempting any major statement. Ian Carr on trumpet and flugelhorn, Karl Jenkins on oboe and piano, Brian Smith on saxophone and flute, Chris Spedding on guitar and bouzouki, Jeff Clyne on bass and John Marshall on drums constituted one of the most skilled combos in the world, and each piece is de facto a display of their technical brilliance." --Piero Scaruffi
