...Fabulous Songs Of Miss Sonia Pottinger Vol. 2. 2007 release. Artist: ELLIS, ALTON
Title: Soul Train Is Coming
Label: ROCK A SHACKA (JAPAN)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: DBCD 017CD
2008 release. A commemorative album for Alton Ellis who passed away in October of 2008 after a battle with cancer. Alton was a godfather of legendary status who laid the foundations for Jamaican singer-songwriters. Starting with releases from the '60s, this album is an awesome showcase of Alton's lesser-known but prodigious talents as a record producer. Following his massive hits at Studio One and Treasure Isle, Alton decided to go it alone and set up his own label, Ellis. Sadly, due to various pressures put on him by the major labels, he was only able to release a few singles, before having to draw a close to this wonderful period of production. As such, these tunes make up a collection of rarities which have until now been very difficult to come by -- 19 tracks in all, they represent some of the best of Alton's rocksteady and early reggae output. Rocksteady track no. 1 features Alton, his sister Hortense Ellis and Starlites trumpet player Johnny Moore -- who passed away shortly before Alton -- while other tracks feature backing from Upsetters, as well as rhythms recorded by the Sound Dimensions at Studio One. Includes a booklet in English and Japanese, with detailed commentary by Mandingo as well as rare artist and label photos.

Artist: BROWN MEETS KING TUBBY, GLEN
Title: Big Dub: 15 Dubs From Lost Tapes
Label: ROCK A SHACKA (JAPAN)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: DBCD 018CD
A collection of previously-unreleased outtakes of versions from B-sides to 7" and 12" releases on the Pantomime, South East and Dwyer labels -- labels on which singer, musician and record producer Glen Brown put out some of his most highly-acclaimed work -- by artists such as Sylford Walker and Big Youth. Glen Brown carved out a place for himself with his unique style, putting him up there alongside the likes of Lee Perry, Dub Organizer and Augustus Pablo. The works featured on this CD are also among some of the first on which King Tubby was credited as an artist. A lowly studio engineer at the time, King Tubby was already beginning to go beyond just experimenting with the tape effects and spring reverb of the day, by trying every means possible to create what would become his own distinctive sound. The sessions reproduced on this remastered CD represent a joyous and significant discovery of "lost" music, which sees the likes of King Tubby and Family Man come together in a creative collaboration with this singularly-talented producer, who originally started his career as a jazz singer.
