Title:
Reggae Interpretation Of Kind Of Blue
Label:
SECRET STASH RECORDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
SSR 266LP
On blue vinyl. "In the spring of 1981 a group of reggae studio musicians from Jamaica gathered in New York City under the direction of Jeremy Taylor, a music professor at NYU at that time. The result was this
Reggae Interpretation of Kind of Blue
. Though he was primarily regarded as a world-class jazz musician and educator, Taylor had taken several trips to Jamaica to study reggae music with some of the best performers in the world. In his 1979 book,
A Space Between
Taylor wrote,
'My first trip to Jamaica (May 1977) was the most eye opening musical experience of my life. I met so many incredible players who had been brushed off by the snobby musical establishment at institutions such as the ones I was affiliated with. They showed more musicality, taste, and rhythmic comprehension than some of the most revered musicians in the states. I knew that I had to find a way to showcase their unparalleled talent in a different medium in order for some of my colleagues to fully understand and learn from it.'
This statement served as the basic concept behind this album. Taylor took the most loved, well-known modern jazz album of all time and put it in the hands of reggae musicians. It was in this context that he felt his contemporaries would be able to fully understand what it was he saw in these players. Unfortunately, weeks after directing the sessions Taylor passed away in his Paris hotel room while on a speaking tour of Europe. A final mix of the album was never made and it was never released. Collectors have long spoken of this album and in the late '80s lo-fi cassette tapes of rough mixes circulated. No official release was ever issued until now. In early 2009, Secret Stash Records began working with the Taylor estate to finally release this album. After creating final mixes, dub versions of all the songs were also made by Secret Stash producers. Now for the first time ever, this highly sought-after album is available. This vinyl-only release is a must have for any record collector."

Title:
The Rhythms of Black Peru
Label:
SECRET STASH RECORDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
SSR 273LP
"Afro-Peruvian music is one of the most elusive genres in the world. Not only is it practically unheard outside the borders of Peru, but even the people of Peru are unsure of many aspects of its history. The roots of this music date back to the mid 1500s, but over time the Afro- Peruvian culture and its music faded. So much so that by the mid 1900s, most remaining black Peruvians had never even seen a Cajon (a wooden box drum that is the definitive Afro-Peruvian instrument). From the mid 1950s through the 1970s, Peruvian labels such as El Virrey, IEMPSA, and Odeon supported an Afro-Peruvian revival with the release of hundreds of Afro-Peruvian albums. Today Salsa and Rock music rule the airwaves in Peru, but Afro-Peruvian music is far from dead. In the spring of 2010 Secret Stash Records traveled to Lima to learn more about this music and seek out songs to compile for LP release.
The Rhythms of Black Peru
is a collection of some of the most important Afro- Peruvian recordings of all time. It includes some of the most prolific figures in Afro-Peruvian culture such as Nicomedes Santa Cruz (credited by many as the most significant person in the Afro-Peruvian revival), Chabuca Granda, and Zambo Cavero. This vinyl-only (+MP3 download card) compilation is the perfect introduction to this percussion driven fusion of African rhythms and Latin melodies."

GRUPO OZ
Title:
Miss Thing
Label:
SECRET STASH RECORDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
SSR 277LP
"In 1971 a group of studio musicians calling themselves Grupo Oz in Mexico City got together and recorded a collection of original psych-funk tunes in their home town. They called the album,
Miss Thing
. Their label, Discos Raff (Three Souls In My Mind, La Cosa Nostra, El Ritual) had high hopes for the skilled players. Not only were they some of the most solid players in Mexico at the time, but they created their own sound rooted deeply in American funk and soul. Their songs were all in English and they actually sounded natural singing in English. Discos Raff orchestrated the release of the record in Latin America as well as Spain, but always kept the US market its top priority. In fact, most of the 1,500 units that were pressed ended up in the US. By early 1972 the band's crossover success hadn't materialized and the label seized all promotional efforts for the record. All of the players went back to their usual studio work and Grupo Oz disappeared forever. Today however, the legend of the psych-funk band from Mexico City has spread throughout the world. Now, original pressings of their one and only LP sell for $200+ on ebay. This high quality reissue comes with a free download of the entire album plus two bonus tracks. It is wrapped in a custom die cut obi to add a new design element without compromising the integrity of the original design and comes sealed in a resealable dust bag."

Persian Funk
Label:
SECRET STASH RECORDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
SSR 279LP
"It seems hard for most Westerners to imagine today, but in the middle part of last century, the Iranian government was very supportive of the Western way of life. In addition to pushing for women's right to vote, the Shah and his organization encouraged art, music, and film in Iranian society. The Ministry of Culture founded Ahang Rooz, a record label featuring the biggest acts in the country. Over time, they launched additional imprints such as Caspian, Royal, Apollon, and Olympic. The music that came out of this renaissance ('53-'79) was an incredible mix of rock, jazz, soul, funk, and indigenous music. The influence of American and British music was extremely present. In fact, some artists even covered songs (in English) by the Beatles, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, and more. Successful Iranian musicians were treated like America treats Hollywood A-listers. In 1979 religious leaders throughout Iran grew angry with what they perceived to be the Shah's attempt to wipe out Islam from their country. This sparked the Iranian revolution that put the anti-western Ayatollah Kohmeini in power. Once in power, Kohmeini eliminated the Iranian record business. He saw it as being riddled with western influence and a threat to his regime's power. They burned most of the country's recording studios and rid the country of its popular musicians. Most were exiled from Iran while others were put on house arrest. Finally, 40 years later, some of the long lost popular music of Iran is beginning to resurface. Secret Stash Records is extremely proud to announce this release that focuses exclusively on funk and soul tunes recorded in Iran during the 70s. These tracks have been hand selected after dozens of hours of digging and searching through almost forgotten archives. They are a mix of instrumental, Farsi vocal, and English cover songs. This record is packed full of deep grooves, killer breaks, and high energy, all with a healthy dose of Persian influence. Each LP comes with a free digital download of the entire album and is packaged in a re-sealable dust bag."

"George Danquah's
Hot andJumpy
is one of the most collectable funky gems to come out of the incredible music scene in Ghana during the 70s. Today original copies can easily fetch over $300. To many collectors, this record seems to have come out of nowhere. It is the only known album by this New Edubiase (3 hours NW of Accra) native. He appears to have arrived out of thin air, recorded one of the funkiest albums in African history, and then vanished. However, this isn't entirely true. Danquah played with many of Ghana's top musicians all throughout his career. Before recording this album he toured all over West Africa playing in such bands as Benya Beats, Blue Monks (which C.K. Mann, Ebo Taylor, and Pat Thomas were all members of), and the legendary Uhuru Dance Band (one of today's most popular artists from this scene thanks to some wonderful compilations in recent years). He honed his skills playing with some of the country's greatest musicians and arrangers.
Hot and Jumpy
is the culmination of many years of hard work and musical exploration. This fully licensed proper '1=1 reissue' is an accurate representation of the original. Each LP package is hand assembled, hand numbered, and placed in a resealable dust bag by our staff (along with some wonderful volunteers). As always, each copy comes with an MP3 download card good for the entire album."

"Peruvian Cumbia is one of the most unique sounds of modern South America. It mixes the more widely known Colombian Cumbia with rock, funk, phsycadellia, surf music, Cuban Guracha, and of course traditional Peruvian crillo and highlands music. No single artist was more influential in the creation of this sound than Enrique Delgado and Los Destellos. Delgado, an incredibly skilled crillo guitar player was the first artist to take the electric guitar and make it the lead instrument in cumbia, earning him the nickname 'Father of Peruvian Cumbia.' After the release of their debut single, 'El Gatito' in '66, Delgado continued to push the band in a more experimental direction which reached its pinnacle with 1971's

Constelacion
is among the most collectable South American LPs known. Tattered copies yield top dollar on sites like eBay and discogs. Though a couple tracks have appeared on some very successful compilations over the last few years, a proper reissue has never been released until now! Secret Stash is thrilled to announce the release of this, the first ever reissue of Los Destello's ultra rare masterpiece. Each copy is hand assembled in our facilities, hand numbered, includes an MP3 download card of the entire album, and comes in a re-sealable dust bag."

TABOU COMBO
Title:
Respect...
Label:
SECRET STASH RECORDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
SSR 283LP
"Formed in 1967 just outside of Port-au-Prince, Tabou Combo has proven to be the most successful band to ever come out of Haiti. They've toured Europe, Mexico, Africa, the Caribbean and the United States (including a central Park concert boasting over 20,000 attendees). It has been said by many that Tabou Combo is Haitian music. Their unique blend of American funk and soul with native sounds has earned them legions of devoted fans the world over. However, their popularity didn't exactly occur overnight. In fact, after a couple years of playing around Haiti the group disbanded and went their separate ways. Most of the members settled down in different parts of the US. By late 1971 Tabou Combo reformed in Brooklyn, NY. It wasn't until 1975 that they scored their first real hit, though. But, that time between '71 and '75 is when some of their most exciting and experimental music was created. The most notable of which was 1973's
Respect...
LP. The album is true to their roots as a Compas (Haitian party music) band. Rather than play American pop music with flavors of Haitian music, they focused their sound on Compas and used funk, soul, and psych as extra spice. All of the songs are sung in Haitian Creole, with the exception of a couple ballads that are performed in French (a common practice in Haiti at the time). The intricate guitars drenched in psychedelic effects fuse seamlessly with non-stop hard driving percussion to create one of the most hypnotic, unique sounds ever recorded. Couple that with the mix of Caribbean rhythms and danceable James Brown inspired breaks and you will hear why
Respect...
is among the most collectable world music records of all time. Secret Stash is proud to present the first ever vinyl re-issue of this funky masterpiece. As always, each LP is hand numbered, hand assembled, and comes in a resealable dust bag."

MURRAY, MICKEY
Title:
People Are Together
Label:
SECRET STASH RECORDS
Format:
LP
Price:
$17.50
Catalog #:
SSR 284LP
"Throughout the sixties, Mickey Murray made a name for himself as a hard working entertainer viewed by many as a cross between James Brown and Otis Redding. In 1969 Murray was signed to King Records. The label was preparing for the inevitable loss of James Brown. Since they obviously couldn't afford to sign another act of Brown's caliber, they decided to develop their own. Mickey was groomed by the label to become their next superstar act. He recorded
People Are Together
and they prepared to release it in 1970 on their Federal Records imprint. They chose the title track as the lead single. The response from most of the black DJs they relied on for support was that they wouldn't play the song. Most of them feared that the song was far too racially provocative for a developing artist. In fact, many black DJs said they were concerned they'd lose their job if they played the track. It didn't take long at all for King to abandon the release. According to Murray, the record may have never actually been formally released in stores. Secret Stash is proud to present the first ever reissue of this lost gem. Each track has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes. We've also added a gatefold jacket packed full of liner notes and never before seen photos."
