Artist: THE SPOILS OF WAR
Title: The Spoils of War
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 001CD
"CD version of this 1969 'psych-concrete' masterpiece (previously issued on Shadoks as an über-pricey LP/7" EP set as well as an LP edition "as texture sleeve plus 7" EP, 25 numbered copies") that would certainly qualify for 'private-press' status were it originally released in 1969. Spearheaded by James Cuomo, a student of Professor Herbert Brün (WDR studios heavy during the 50's; worked alongside Beyer/Eimert, Stockhausen, Gottfried-Michael Koening, later taught at the university of Illinois... 4 recent CD's on EMF fill in a few gaps) whom also designed the original cover (CD/LP reissue cover uses Malcolm Smith's 1954 'Imagination' painting to rather appropriate affect). Includes the 3 aforementioned 7" tracks (credited solely to James Cuomo) from 1970. Some rather inspired promotional muckery would lead you to believe: "Never pressed before so you don´t have to look for originals, folks. Heavy Psych with tiny folky edges plus electronic soundscapes like first album by Mothers of Invention. Has a connection to Mormos but only the musicians, not the music. This is real heavy Acid stuff, weird and twisted, stoned to max, pure LSD (Loud Screaming Distortions), Warning, people with fragile heart condition and emotionally unbalanced should not play this album....". It actually sounds nothing like that (although the Mothers reference isn't too off base), but contains some rather twisted musique concrete interludes (what could be more ideal than the tonal vocabulary of tape music fed through the medulla of a Cest-Coast-wannabe hippie-freak beatnik circa 1969?) that weave throughout some pretty damaged era-ideals-in-song-form replete with O/T guitar solo bits, flute, organ & the rest." -- Hrvatski.

Artist: BUTTERFINGERS
Title:
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 004CD
"This album was released as a test-pressing only and recorded in the US Midwest 1970. Nothing is known about this album, a mystery like Jungle. 10 great heavy tracks loaded with extra heavy fuzz-guitar, organ and souly male vocals. The guy sings like a male Janis Joplin, the music sounds like a tough version of Big Brother & Holding Comp. Nothing for sweet psychfolk fans. This is big-boys-stuff. Heavy and full of soul. It bites." Fake R. Crumb artwork, ala Cheap Thrills.

Acid leads, mystical vocals, tons of effects, completely stoned feeling. Came out as 2 single albums and even more limited as a double album. Only 3 copies known. The music is outta space psychedelic with great songs and beautiful vocals. A real killer from beginning to end." This record is in Paul Major's "Top Five of Weird Underground Psych/Folk", as revealed in Vice magazine.

Title:
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 008CD
"CD reissue of this private press album by this 60s band from San Diego. The music is absolutely perfect fuzz guitar psych with great rhythm guitars, organs and Sgt. Pepper-style vocals. With more luck this band could have been as famous as the Strawberry Alarm Clock and Steppenwolf, two bands with which they shared many bills. Only five copies of the original LP are known to exist. CD contain many bonus tracks, 20 tracks total." Previously reissued on LP by Rockadelic.

Artist: BRIGADE
Title: Last Laugh
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 011CD
Reissue of this obscure LP release from 1970, originally from the Pacific Northwest. "This is one of our all-time favorite album when it comes to Underground & Psychedelic music. One of ten we would take on an island. Full of dynamic and strong fuzz guitar solos, driving drums and amazing vocals, which deserves this official reissue. We located tons of unknown photo materials which will be included in the booklet and some liner notes will give you the full background of the band. We can even include all tour dates the band made between 1967 and 1970. (Originals are impossible to find because only 100 copies were made at the time and some even had the wrong record in)."

Artist: JUAN DELA CRUZ
Title: Up In Arms
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 013CD
"Reissue of the unknown Juan De La Cruz album originally released in 1971.With 30 minutes of extra live tracks released for the first time. Juan De La Cruz were from the Philippines and this is their debut album. LP originals are very obscure and valued at $2000. The album is a beautiful heavy Psych Rock jammer, better than all the other albums released by the band. An incredible view into early '70s psychedelic rock madness, from the Philippines!

Artist: CANDIDA PAX
Title: Day
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 015CD
Day was originally released in 1971. Besides Parameter, this is the rarest release on U.K. Deroy label, as rare as Forever Amber & Dark. If you're into Tony, Caro & John and Then Play On-era Fleetwood Mac, then this is your cup of tea. This is pure Underground with that bluesy Peter Green-like guitar and a folky edge. All original songs and all beauties. Heavy fuzz-guitar, piano, effects -- the whole U.K. Underground thing. A killer album from beginning to the end.

Artist: NEW TWEEDY BROS!, THE
Title:
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 018CD
Reissue of the lone album this SF-based psych band, originally issued in 1966. This is a legit reissue, with three bonus tracks (now packaged in regular jewel case). "This album became to most sought after Psych album and so many collectors love it. It was recorded in 1968. New Tweedy where based in San Francisco and played several times at the Fillmore with bands such as Grateful Dead, Them, Beach Boys and 13th Floor Elevators. Because of a very bad management this album never had an official release and came only out as a very limited pressing way back than. Every track is a winner." "Even better is the much-rumored but long-lost music inside, which manages to hit all the worthwhile points of early-SF songage in a way that often betters their more-known contemps. Starting from a sorta jugband/Byrds base (surprise), they head straight out from there: 'What's wrong With That' kicks up a kazoo-led jug-blues wail that leaves even the Charlatans just sitting there; 'Wheels of Fortune' deals in a mystic-folk code so obscure that it achieves some weird protest anthem status, at least until somebody flips a switch and the cosmos stops by for a visit; 'I Can See It' is the sorta driving folk-pounding that Moby Grape or the Springfield woulda killed for, with a great spaced/jazzy drop at the end.; and so on, and so on.... Every cut kills , the sound is nicely lo-fi, and this one pushes all the right buttons with a naïvely blasted optimism that's really hard to put into words but that will absolutely slay anyone whose head is into this stuff." -- Kevin Moist

Artist: BETTY
Title: Handful
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 019CD
1971: Sierra Madre, California, USA. Hard psychedelic boogie biker rock: not just another hard-psych CD full of unknowns. This record beats most others in the genre with amazing heavy fuzz guitar, great vocals, organs, the whole thing. If you like Moby Grape, Brigade or Butterfingers, we think this is even better. Hideously rare hard-rocker from Los Angeles, CA. Try to imagine Dragonfly merging with Canned Heat and you'll be close. Only 200 copies were pressed as original LPs and sold by the band at gigs, so this record is incredibly rare. If you like crude, powerful heavy rock, this one is not to be missed.

Artist: TONY, CARO & JOHN
Title: All On The First Day
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 021CD
Official reissue in jewel box with five bonus tracks. Tony, Caro & John recorded this album in London 1970 in a homestudio. They've pressed only 100 copies and sold the album at concerts. The music reminds us a lot of Incredible String Band and is as good as Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. All tracks are amazing, no filler. Tony´s voice makes you shiver and the music is taking you on a trip. For many collectors this is the best unknown Underground release ever. There are no greater heroes. "

Artist: FRESH BLUEBERRY PANCAKE
Title: Heavy
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 022CD
"This band was from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They formed in 1968 and by 1970 they were performing primarily original material which necessitated the recording of the demo album. Only 54 copies were pressed, and they were used for promotion... it's now rather difficult to locate. It ranges from post-Hendrix/Blue Cheer brain-numbingly heavy acid-rock (watch out for the opener, Hassles), through bluesy moods, lighter jazzy touches, to jangly almost-folk-rock restraint. The lyrics occasionally head in a religious direction but are not preachy; the overall feel is more one of 'Old Crow' than 'Old Testament'. Fresh Blueberry Pancake shortened their name to Pancake before calling it quits in 1972. Extra heavy West Coast Psych (like Butterfingers) with a touch of Country & Western."

Artist: SHIVER
Title: San Francisco's
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 023CD
"Rising from the same scene of Texas freaks like The 13th Floor Elevators, Johnny Gee & The G Men, and a pre-ZZ Top, Warlocks, Shiver moved to SF and this CD documents their complete output of early '70s heavy psychedelic rock. In a city known for peace, love and flower power, Shiver was an over the top, in your face, balls to the wall 'gang' of musicians that felt at home with Hell's Angels and hippies alike. Free love, free dope. Shiver played a lot of Street Fairs on Haight, Market and Castro streets, and got to jam with guys from Big Brother (Gurley & Albin) and other local heroes. These recordings were done on a two-track machine at 2909 Mariposa in the Summer Of '72 and feature no overdubs or studio 'wizardry.' What you hear on these tracks is Shiver in its raw, powerful glory."

Artist: MY INDOLE RING
Title:
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 024CD
"The home base for My Indole Ring was The Retinal Circus in Vancouver B.C. An album planned for Vanguard Records is now released for the first time. Acid West Coast rock with trippy guitars, sound effects and vocals with soul. With bonus tracks. In 1966 a rock band whimsically named The Jabberwock was formed in Vancouver, British Columbia. This group evolved into the unique acid/blues/rock phenomenon My Indole Ring. Most of the songs on this LP are original Ring compositions and soon became signature tunes for the band, such as Orange Float Petals. This is a selection of raw cuts recorded in just one or two takes in the studio -- giving them a spontaneous feel, reminiscent of the era. The exception is the last three songs -- 'Wake Me Shake Me', 'Come See Me in the Morning', and 'Orange Float Petals -- all recorded live at the Retinal Circus. You can sit back and imagine yourself in the midst of the sunken dance floor with the pulsating light show swirling about your head and the floors and walls literally vibrating with the movement and sound. This is a unique insight into the unbridled energy and excitement of the Retinal Circus, a venue that became legendary in the West Coast music scene. A glimpse into a piece of music history."

Artist: SPECTRUM
Title: Geração Bendita
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 027CD
"If you like Modulo 1000 you'll love this one. Maybe the best Psych album ever released in Brazil with heavy guitar sounds, beautiful vocals and well-crafted songs. A hippy soundtrack starring the band itself. The movie was banned in Brazil. Geração Bendita (Blessed Generation). It was 1971, two years after Woodstock, and the Brazilian youth were still trying to live the hippie dream of the 'Age of Aquarius', even though a little late. In the wave of peace and love, a group of young musicians and moviemakers from Nova Friburgo, in Rio de Janeiro, dove into the production of what became known as 'the first Brazilian hippie movie'. Entitled Geração Bendita, the movie, directed by Carlos Bini and shot in Rio, has become something of a cult classic, remembered for both its visual imagery of the period and the rare and wonderful Original Soundtrack album that it spawned. Recorded in the studios of Todamérica in Rio de Janeiro, the album, also called Geração Bendita is credited to Spectrum, formed by the ex-members of the 2000 Volts band and actors/musicians appearing in the movie. The album assembles twelve songs with lyrics in Portuguese and some in English, most of them speaking about peace, love, freedom, nature and other themes and meaningful values of that time. Accentuated with plenty of fuzz guitars and vocals in a 'Beatles-style', the record was hailed as a world-class production and the talents of the group above the national standard of that time."

Artist: PEACEPIPE
Title: Peacepipe
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 029CD
Official CD reissue of this psychedelic rock trio's lone recordings, originally from 1969. Packaged in jewel box with many extra tracks (previously issued by Rockadelic on LP), a booklet great photos in b/w and color and bio. Extra heavy Psych, great guitars and vocals. There's a ton of great rock from California's underground scene... that's a given. But if you're after serious guitar pyrotechnics, you'll be hard-pressed to top this CD. The hideously rare Peacepipe single is one of the most utterly possessed recordings of the late '60s. Both tracks have a unique dark energy to them that is not easy to describe with words -- but they are indisputably lysergic."

Artist: SHUTTAH
Title: The Image Maker Vol. 1 & 2
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SHAD 030CD
This is the rarest of unknown, anonymous English prog-psych from 1971, with only one known copy left in existence -- a perfect acetate. The Image Maker Vol. 1 & 2 is a real underground concept album with a progressive touch that only needs a few spins to get it right. Well-crafted songs, great vocals, sound-effects, organ and heavy fuzz guitar all combine to make up one of the better albums on the Vertigo label with a good dose of acid in it. Shadoks Music spoke to Geoff Oliver, the former owner of IBC recording studios, but he could not remember any of the recordings made by Shuttah in his studio -- there were just too many engineers busy at the same time, during those golden days of the London underground, where studios were recording music which became big hits. IBC was famous for making recordings for bands such as The Kinks, The Who and The Beatles, plus many, many others, which leads one to the conclusion that this recording of Shuttah was very expensive to make, so there MUST be a famous musician behind it. The recording, arrangements and concepts are on a very high professional level. Even a search at UK copyright control did not show any results revealing the identity of who, exactly, Shuttah was. Since the original acetates appeared many years ago, this is still a very provocative unsolved mystery of the UK underground. The word Shuttah is a religious reference, if you have a Bible handy. The title of the album The Image Maker also suits the religious meaning.

Artist: THE SPOILS OF WAR
Title: II
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 033CD
Originally released in 1968/70, and headed by Jim Cuomo, this is a follow-up album of unreleased live and studio material from The Spoils of War, previously released as a double LP. The Spoils Of War made some of the most inspiring but strange music from the '60s, in the same awe-inspiring vein as early Mothers Of Invention. This is music with a hearty intellectual background, combined with well-crafted and well-performed music in the key of Zappa. Other influences might indicate early Soft Machine, Slap Happy, Henry Cow and Faust. For open-minded listeners, The Spoils of War are a must: experiments with electronic sounds, compositions and performances of beautiful harmonies and songs, and all circa 1967/68. How in the world could he make music like this so early? Well, it must have been the inspiring influence of Jim Cuomo's musical teacher John Cage. Even today the music of The Spoils Of War goes far beyond most other modern pop music and will be inspiring for many years from now.

Artist: MENDELBAUM
Title: Mendelbaum
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SHAD 034CD
"Mendelbaum was different. Musically led by the lightning fast, ripping licks of Chris Michie's cherry-red 1968 Gibson SG Special (later stripped to the wood and emblazoned with a bald eagle medallion from an officer's hat) and fueled by the 'sturm und drang' of Tom La Varda?s pick-up modified Guild bass, and Keith Knudsen's Ludwig drums, they played and sang hard and fast, loud and high. While their colleagues, the Doobie Brothers, were singing about how 'Jesus Was Just Alright' for them and that we should all just 'Listen to the Music', Mendelbaum was quite a bit darker in nature. Chris Michie sang about 'Learning To Die' and similar subjects not usually shared at the love-ins and the pot-fueled discussions of how 'beautiful and groovy' everything was in the sixties. Ahead of their time, or simply coming around again in the cycle of life and of music, Mendelbaum defied commercialism and categorization in their hey-day over thirty years ago. Their thoughtful songs and brilliant playing continue even today to fly in the face of the corporate, pre-marketed 'cool' that pervades our popular music culture. Mendelbaum's music, like any true art form, functioned on many levels. First, it provided a catharsis for them as writers and musicians. Secondly, it reached out to countless fans in the sixties and seventies, acknowledging their own pain and isolation. Finally, Mendelbaum's music is returning today to echo the strains of an era long gone, yet in many ways as current as today."

Warehouse find of the last copies of this 2002 reissue. "Best recordings we ever had, from Masters. Real Westcoat Rock with extra heavy Psych guitar played by Chris Michie who later joined Van Morrison, with Keith Knudsen on drums (Doobie Brothers). 21 tracks all original, well-crafted songs, was a demo for WB and the 2nd album is live recorded at Fillmore West by Bill Graham & Matrix S.F. Real cookin' San Francisco sound."

Artist: SOUND FACTORY
Title: Sound Factory
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 035CD
"1970 brought mixed feelings for Brazilians. Victory at the World Cup was an all-too-brief distraction from the dictatorial regime that was ruling the country. At that time, doing 'art', whatever it was -- music, painting, literature -- was a way of achieving some kind of freedom. And soon Sound Factory started to rehearse. Their first gig was at the Vale do lpí Country Club in a working-class suburb of Rio. Of the 10 tracks on the album, there were only three originals: 'Restless Time', 'Let's Go', and 'Midnight Inspiration'. The others were covers from Traffic, Blind Faith, Johnny Winter, It's A Beautiful Day, Jefferson Airplane and Cream. Amazing Hard Psych. A real beauty. The guitar sound screams like hell. Very few known original copies."

Artist: VA
Title: The Shadoks Music Compilation
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $5.50
Catalog #: SHAD 036CD
Budget priced sampler CD. "In the beginning there were Ten Little Indians. Ten of the most luxurious vinyl reissues ever produced for the collectors market. Named after the children's finger play, the numerically-doomed series counted backwards to its demise over the course of three years, releasing now sought-after limited edition repressings of Damon: 'Song Of A Gypsy', Maitreya Kali: 'Apache/Inca' (double), Jungle, Ladies W.C., and the rest, all in breathtaking textured and/or gimmick sleeves. It was an experiment in excess whose time had come. The bar having been raised, other reissue labels (including long-established ones) found it necessary to upgrade all of their own productions, and a new era was begun for serious archivists of vintage music. Shadoks Music is three years old now and has outdistanced its parent company by some fifteen albums in that time, as well as marketing a number of CD releases which do not necessarily parallel the vinyl catalogue. Like the Little Indians series before it, Shadoks vinyl projects are handmade in limited edition, produced in Germany using the finest materials available in Europe. These vinyl issues traditionally sell out within a few weeks of release." Artists include: Peacepipe, Spectrum, My Indole Ring, Shiver, Tony, Caro & John, Framework, The New Tweedy Bros!, Fate, Juan De La Cruz Band, Brigade, The Brain Police, The Wallflower Complextion, Simla Beat, Maitreya Kali, Butterfingers, Pete Fine, Merry Airbrakes, The Spoils of War.

Title: See The Morning / No Savage Word
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SHAD 038CD
First CD reissue of both Mick Stevens albums, originally released in 1972/75, and extremely unknown. Stevens is credited on: words and music, vocals, guitars, banjo, percussion, bouzoukitars. "Loner vibe, beautiful vocals, a mixture of acoustic and electric numbers. If you like Michael Angelo with a Billy Nichols touch, this one is yours. The recording quality is top major studio. Both albums where pressed at Deroy studios, the famous collectors label among Psych and Folk freaks. All Deroy albums are rare because you could press as little as 10 copies for a start. So most Deroy production are under 100 copies pressed. Some famous Deroy LP's are: Candida Pax, Parameter, Complex, Circulation...This 2 album set, which features that came out separately in 1972 and 1975, beats all other Deroy productions, sound-wise and music-wise. Mick Stevens was able to create a sound of emotions with an underground touch. Just like in the movie Blow Up."

Artist: THE MYSTERY MEAT
Title: Profiles
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 041CD
The holy grail of raw garage rock albums! Recorded at a college in Illinois in 1968, original copies of The Mystery Meat's Profiles LP are now worth a year's tuition at almost any university in the Midwest. All original songs! Unearthed from a yard sale, and sought-after on eBay ever since, this LP was recorded in Carlinville, Illinois in the basement of the administration building of Blackburn College where all of the band members were students. Steve Oberman did the engineering and editing as well as "borrowing" the college's equipment which consisted of four old Electrovoice mics and a PA amplifier which served as a mixer. The 12 tracks were recorded live. Gary Walden was the percussionist and Bob Rentz was the keyboard player. The real musician and "genius" behind the group was probably Ron O'Dell. Dick had a good tenor voice, Rentz was a good organist, and Gary was a great drummer. In many ways it is a sketch of Blackburn College. Blackburn has in a very real way shaped everything in this album, from the art work on the cover to the organ passage of the selections. But the real Profiles are of the five young men who sang and played their hearts out to make this LP. For a while they were able to keep apart from the world of C.O.G., Hudson Hall, The Work Committee, and Mama Z. to produce this effort. But even apart from the College each of them knew that without its presence this recording would not have been possible. Compared to The Dovers, New Colony Six, Music Emporium, Mystic Siva, All of Thus and Complex.

Artist: IOTA
Title: Iota
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 042CD
"From the archives of the legendary El Paso, Texas Suemi label comes this previously unreleased psych masterpiece by Iota. This 4 piece band tore up Texas before re-locating to Memphis to record for Hi Records in the late 60's. They released two great 45's, including the amazing Within These Precincts in 1971. Deemed too dark and disturbing for commercial radio, these two releases went nowhere and the band went their separate ways after two years of playing and recording. We have compiled the best tracks recorded in both Memphis and El Paso to put together what we feel is one of the finest Texas psych rock LPs ever released."

Artist: BRUSH
Title: Brush!?
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 047CD
This is Masayoshi Takanaka's (pre-Flied Egg) first-ever recording, originally released in 1971 as a tiny private pressing in Japan, also one of the great collector's unsolved mysteries, appearing in Hans Pokora's book, 3001 Record Collector Dreams. It's so rare that it took nearly two years to locate the material. The music is West Coast-oriented hard psych with a progressive touch -- all original material and really well-produced. This is a concept album like Spooky Tooth/Pierre Henry's Ceremony, and a true hippie undertaking by Takanaka, Hitoki Goto, Michio Ara, Tushio Tsukagishi, Toru Hatano and Takefumi Yoshida -- an album where many musicians of the Japanese underground scene were involved. In Japan this album is also known as Escape. First-ever CD jewel case edition with 20-page booklet.

Artist: BANGO
Title: Bango
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 048CD
Originally released in 1970, this is extra-heavy Brazilian psych, with killer guitars and well-crafted original songs. This is one of the most sought-after albums from Brazil in the realm of hard psych, and you may already know one track from the Love Peace & Poetry: Brazilian Psychedelic Music album which is quite a standout. Every track is a winner. For many underground collectors this is the ultimate psych album, so it needed a good reissue. What Lula Côrtes is for underground folk and Sound Factory is for garage, Bango is THE psychedelic album together with Modulo 1000.

Artist: FLOW, THE
Title: The Flow's Greatest Hits
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 050CD
"Very rare album by The Flow with Pete Fine on guitars/vocals, Monte Farber on bass/vocals, Steve Starer on drums, compositions by Pete Fine and Monte Farber. This is a guitar burner total. If you´re into Blue Cheer and extra heavy Fuzz guitar is your thing, you´ll love this album. Great songs, a mindblower. Finally it came out on CD with 3 bonus tracks and poster-booklet. 'In those rebellious and psychedelic times we barely earned enough to pay for food at times, while developing our musical horizons. I am amazed we survived those days. Eventually, we became a 3 piece band - The Flow. We rented a room in NYC -- also renting a room was Wicked Lester, a band later to be known as KISS. We used the space for our own explorations. With our limited funds, we could only complete half of the project so we released the record with one blank side and later on, added more material.'" --Pete Fine

Shadoks' first release from Indonesia is very special and was featured in Hans Pokora's 4001 Record Collector Dreams book as one of the rarest items from Asia. Originally released in 1973, this album contains beautiful, well-crafted songs with lots of guitars. Pure, heavy psychedelic with a good progressive Indonesian touch. If you like Juan De La Cruz' Maskara, or the Cambodian Rocks comp, this one is for you. If there would be a Vertigo release recorded in Indonesia this could be it. So far the only psychedelic release from Indonesia on the market, this CD version of the previously-released LP became a big success. Band members include: Oedin Syach, Jeffry Zaenal and Noerche.

Catalog #: SHAD 053CD
Reissue of this psychedelic rock band from El Paso, TX, originally issued in 1970; previously reissued on the collectable Rockadelic label. Noted for its "real American Indian/Desert vibe", this was the band's only release. "This latest Rockadelic release out as Shadoks CD now came also from the the vaults of El Paso's Suemi label (like Iota) and has been turning some heads. Very unusual sounds spearheaded by brothers Darrell and Doug Adams who later moved to the West Coast and released LP's with the middle eastern influenced band Light Rain. The album has a spooky, late night vibe and the lyrics that reveal new meanings upon every listen. Great guitar work by Mike Cancelarre and twisted vocals by drummer/songwriter David Rutledge. Visions of late night desert peyote hallucinations on songs like 'Scissor-Tailed Swallow' and 'Country Of The Goose' compliment a hard rock, Captain Beefhart vibe on 'Mad Rapper'. Unusual timing and phrasing makes this journey into the twisted back roads of El Paso's great rock & roll heritage."

Artist: TIME
Title: Before There Was...
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 054CD
Before There Was..., never before released, was recorded in 1968 in Toronto, Canada. Lynn David Newton, the founding member of Time studied in the same class as Jim Cuomo from The Spoils Of War in Urbana, Illinois. Along with David Rosenboom and two other musicians, Before There Was... is a well-composed, well-played musical masterpiece that is both touching and twisted. Heavily influenced by the British Underground, these are all original songs, replete with harpsichord, flutes, percussion, horns, many effects and lots of heavy fuzz guitar and a singer who sounds like Robert Wyatt in the early '70s. A year later, Time moved to New York and became Think Dog (also released by Shadoks Music). Imagine Mia Farrow in the movie Rosemary's Baby sitting in her window and watching the New York streets below while it's raining outside -- that's what this music feels like.

Artist: FINGLETOAD, STRANGE & SIHO
Title: Mazzola
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SHAD 055CD
This is the first and second album by young bohemian Americans Fingletoad, Strange & Siho. Their self-titled first album was recorded in 1969 in Chicago as Fingletoad & Strange, and very few acetates were pressed. The follow-up Mazzola was recorded in 1970, and perhaps less than 100 records were pressed. This double CD includes all original songs from both albums, taking the listener on a psychedelic trip merging imaginary landscapes and dreamy folk with teenage angst. Clearly influenced by the top musicians of the time, The Beatles, Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix, they undoubtedly manage to create a sound all their own ranging from beautiful lyrical ballads with harmony vocals to over-the-top fuzz and feedback frenzy. All professionally executed while still retaining a garage atmosphere and production, creating the perfect mix.

Artist: FINE, PETE
Title: Northstar
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: LP
Price: $40.00
Catalog #: SHAD 056LP
"Finally here is the second solo album by guitar wizard Pete Fine recorded 2 year after his first album On A Day Of A Crystalline Thought. This album Northstar sound a bit more tight with same fuzz guitar but with better song structures. Some tracks are instrumentals which blow guitar lovers away. Others have female and male vocals with a touch of west-coast sound. If there is a guitarist in this music scene we adore Pete Fine would be among the top 5. One of our best Shadoks releases."

Artist: HEADSTONE CIRCUS
Title: Headstone Circus
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 061CD
Headstone Circus was formed in 1966 by Glenn Faria (who also released some solo music on World In Sound). This beautiful album was recorded between 1968-1970, and on the first spin it is reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young -- four-way street electric sides. Well-composed, well-performed, and in line with some of the better Neil Young albums, with an extra weird touch. "Around 1966, Nick Bonis, Mike Johnstone, Randy Pope, and I formed a psychedelic band. On Halloween night we went to an old cemetery, dropped acid, and spent a very strange night among the tombstones. The tombstones appeared to be melting and taking on animal shapes. Some of us saw spirits, and I'm not sure what I saw, but it was disturbing. Afterwards, we referred to that night as the 'Headstone Circus.' It seemed appropriate to call ourselves Headstone Circus as a band so we did." Enjoy this amazing West Coast album which was recorded in Washington D.C.

Artist: THINK DOG!
Title: Dog Days
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 063CD
This is the second album after the band Time released their record ...Before There Was, and changed their name to Think Dog!. Dog Days was recorded in 1969/1970 in New York City and members Lynn David Newton, Tom McFaul, Richard Stanley, Bob Stuhler (the drummer of Hot Tuna) and David Rosenboom (on one track), recorded 60 minutes of creative music which was never released before. Again, this is a musical masterpiece of well-composed and well-crafted touching and twisted songs highly influenced by the British Underground, by a band that left everything else behind and should have made it, but didn't. On some tracks, the vocals sound like Robert Wyatt in the early '70s. If you like the Canterbury sound and art rock with Underground roots, you will love this one. The photos for the album cover were shot by the famous U.S. photographer I.C. Rapoport, who worked for Paris-Match, Saturday Evening Post, Life, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, etc. Now reissued with six bonus tracks.

Artist: VICTORIA
Title: Victoria
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 065CD
Local New Jersey demo-release (200 made in 1971) from Victoria, a band and album beyond rare, fantastic, conceptual psych-beauty. Sometimes dreamy, sometimes totally wild underground-psych, this release features female vocals, titanic horns and distorted guitars. Sweet tunes turn into dark psych-power. Totally stoned. This amazing album was first released on the Seven Little Indians label (before it became Shadoks Music) eight or nine years ago as a limited-edition with a red velvet cover and golden engraved artwork. A 500-copy limited-edition CD, also in red velvet, was sold out in a few months. Besides Jungle, this album is a famous Little Indian release. If you like Moby Grape you should check this one out. The album has remained unreleased until a few years ago.

Artist: MOURNING PHASE
Title: Mourning Phase
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: LP
Price: $40.00
Catalog #: SHAD 066LP
"This demo-LP was discovered in 1992 and later sold for a 4-figure sum to a 'collector'. It appeared to be a test pressing, dated 1971. Lyrically interesting, the densely layered acoustic/electric music seems merely to serve as a vehicle for the love/hate relationship of, speculatively, the male and female vocalists. Cynical, misanthropic, (with and occasional cello). It rates highly and rightly so, because the songs are well-written, well-performed, and goes from somewhat dreamy through to aggressive. Recorded at Eden studios. You can compare the music very close to Mellow Candle, one of the best underground folk albums there is, and this is as good."

Artist: AKBAYRAM, EDIP
Title: Edip Akbayram
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SHAD 067CD
First readily available reissue/compilation of material by this famous Turkish psych musician from the early '70s. Edip Akbayram is the top of the BIG three of Turkish delights (Erkin Koray, Baris Mancho & Edip). This release includes the best psych tracks from his first two albums and many singles -- 22 tracks, 90 minutes of music. His band Dostlar formed the songs into something which takes you on an Eastern trip, full of fuzz guitar, electric sax and great percussions. Edip's dark voice makes you shiver and you feel like dancing right away. This is as good as Erkin Koray -- deeply spiritual and charged with politically powerful lyrics. This release stands as one of the Shadoks reissue classics.

Artist: BEAUREGARD AJAX
Title: Deaf Priscilla
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 068CD
Perhaps one of the best American psych gems Shadoks ever laid their hands on. The album was recorded in April 1968 at Western Sound Recorders L.A. for a famous surf label, but was never released. Perhaps better than Public Nuisance and as good as Brain Police from Rockadelic, this album is a milestone such as Cold Sun's Dark Shadow. There isn't one track that is lacking energy (and there are 14 great ones, plus 4 bonus tracks never issued before) -- songs such as "Loneliness Is A Sometime Thing," "Dead Woman Blues" and "Deaf Priscilla" are outstanding highlights. Perfect vocals, tons of fuzz guitar and tough lyrics. We will love this album forever.

Artist: KAMIJO
Title: Martha
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 069CD
Since this elusive 1971 record appeared in Hans Pokora's 3001 Record Collector Dreams book, most collectors (including those in Japan) were searching for this album with no luck. So now it's time to solve another mystery: beside the other unknown albums shown in the same book, 3/3 and Olive, Martha is the one everybody was talking about the most. What is it? Has anybody seen it? It's so rare, but is it any good? Martha is the first of three albums composed by the Japanese artist, Kamijo. The other two are Tomo (also very rare) and Tomoaki Kamijo KK Band's Dear My Friend (Pretty Are Too), but Martha is the best of them all. All English vocals, lots of fuzz guitar, percussion, piano and great vocals. An underground-rock album with folky elements and a West Coast touch. Kamijo is the Mick Stevens of Japan. Five musicians, ten great songs.

Artist: LOS JAIVAS
Title: El Volantin
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: LP
Price: $40.00
Catalog #: SHAD 070LP
"This first ever album by Chilean band Los Jaivas had no name but it always was called El Volantin. It was only release in Chile in a small limited run for a real private label. That's why someone could call it the rarest album from Chile, way rarer than Aguarturbia, Kissing Spell and Embrujo. Perhaps not as much sought after but rare as gold-dust. The music is real trippy and you can compare it close with the Lula Cortez Paêbirú album. Long passages of trippy sounds waving into fuzz guitar songs. There is a more acoustic side of the album and the second side is all electric. Really amazing music for everybody into acid trips into the wild South American wilderness. I am sure that this album was banned after 1973 when the Chilean government became nasty to 'musician from another planet'."

Artist: STEVENS, MICK
Title: The River/The Englishman
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 2CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SHAD 072CD
These are the last recordings of Mick Stevens, originally released in 1977 (The River) and 1979 (The Englishman), respectively. Mick Stevens arrived on the music scene and then disappeared, seemingly without anybody noticing. Two sublime, inventive, and beautifully-crafted homemade albums in the early 1970s -- See The Morning and No Savage Word -- (previously reissued by Shadoks, SHAD 038CD) were evidence of the superior songwriting and arranging skills that he possessed. Though highly personalized, the performances, the songs, the musicianship, and the painstaking (low-budget and homespun) production of these first two records gave them a sound and a feel that suggested that here was a real talent on the launch-pad of a musical career of some substance. By 1977, and with no record contract in sight, Mick took a group of musician friends into Spaceward Studios in Cambridge (England) and recorded the tracks for The River, the first CD in this 2CD collection. The dreamy vocal layers so prevalent in the earlier albums are subservient to a much harder and "rockier" sound, while Stevens' electric guitar-playing is of the highest order. Since the '70s were a time of much creativity and wholly new approaches to sound, a number of musical influences can be heard in Stevens' music on this particular album. The opening to the lengthy "Suite (To A Seagull)" has overtones of King Crimson or Gentle Giant, developing into a Yes-like section and a middle-eight reminiscent of early Steely Dan. The album The Englishman is self-assured, confidently and beautifully played by a bunch of first-rate musicians including Ric Sanders of Soft Machine, the Albion Band and Fairport Convention, and Michael Gregory -- whose crisp drumming patterns are a real highlight. The track "The Englishman" is the clear apex of the album, with Stevens' voice and solo acoustic guitar completely filling the audio waves in a song about an Englishman overseas. The original vinyl pressings of all Mick Stevens' albums are now collector's items, all exorbitantly expensive. These songs have never sounded as good as they do on these CDs due to the care and attention of the transfer process in removing all the surface noise to be found on the original vinyl and tapes.

Artist: BORN AGAIN
Title: Pagan
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 073CD
Sweet, original garage/psych originating from Marin County. A Red Mountain offshoot, Born Again stumbled their way to L.A. in late 1969/early 1970, shepherded by producer Roger Dollarhide at Sun West Studios in Hollywood to mixed success. With a raw style in the vein of the Faces and the more trippy facet of The Rolling Stones, the band was led by the tuneful grooves of guitar player Larry Otis and the liquored, languorous voice of Bryce Sullivan. From piano ballads to horror-tinged instrumentals ("Laurie Waltzing" from the 1970s film The Velvet Vampire) to a ripping backwards sound collage, Born Again were early southern rock at its best. Contracted to Pat Boone Productions, the band saw members reappear and disappear for opportunities elsewhere. Including seven bonus tracks, this record has long been hard-to-find and has solidly stood the test of time.

Artist: ADOLPHUS, PAUL
Title: The Dawn Wind
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 076CD
First CD reissue of a very obscure Japanese private press folk album from 1973. Australian artist Paul Adolphus recorded the album in Kyoto/Japan, playing guitar, vocals, flutes, shakuhachi. Totally vibed-out "personal" folk-psych. "My first visit to Japan was in 1968 after living in India and Sri Lanka. My wife at the time arrived in Kyoto, and had our first child there. We really loved it. We returned to Sweden then went back to Kyoto and had our second child there. We lived in a 200 year old farm house in a village outside Kyoto. It was a great scene at the time. Japanese artists, bohemians, and visiting foreigners making art, music, poetry, etc. I was playing music with different people, then developed a musical relationship with Mitsu Harada. We did concerts and toured to other cities in Japan together. Before leaving Japan, Mitsu organized to record the album together. Mitsu's father was the grand master of a calligraphy school. In a large room in the school, Mitsu set up mics and a big stereo recorder consul. Most of the playing was by Mitsu and myself, an American friend played a little guitar and percussion to fill some holes. A group of friends sat around, so it was a bit of a living room concert feel. It was my material, Mitsu engineered as well as playing. I think there were 200 copies pressed, the covers were hand made, so it was released into the small arts community of Kyoto and Tokyo. Not long after the recording, I travelled with the family to Australia, I had been away from here for a decade. I worked on a lot of projects here, composing for theatre and dance. I had a group called Living Music -- an African drummer, Indian tabla, didgeridoo, winds, etc. It was early days, not too many people were ready for world music." Incredibly rare and sought-after mellow folk album with beautiful songs and harmonies, like a Japanese version of Extradition.

First reissue of a very obscure Japanese private press folk album from 1973. Deluxe gatefold reproduction of the original sleeve, usual lavish Shadoks treatment. Edition of 350 copies. Artist: FINAL SOLUTION, THE
Title: The Final Solution
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: LP
Price: $40.00
Catalog #: SHAD 077LP
First reissue of this 1967 garage rock album, recorded in Puerto Rico. Edition of 400. "Here is finally the album many garages were waiting for. This album is on almost all want-lists we have seen but never showed up. A mystery until now, very much like Mystery Meat years ago. Five guys and a girl recorded this album in 1967 in Puerto Rico. The album was pressed in USA on a private label. The musicians were fellow students at the university of Puerto Rico studying Architecture. Alexy Rodriguez, who was a musician of The Challengers and who designed the cover for Final Solution could not locate an original album to master from. Many years later a well-known collector had the luck of finding a near mint original copy which was the basis of this reissue. Really strong guitar and organ based garage sound, rough and beautiful at the same time. Mostly male vocals, all original 12 songs, English lyrics. Just great and so good we can solve another mystery."

Artist: BUNALIM
Title: Bunalim
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 078CD
First-ever CD reissue of some of the most amazing Turkish music ever recorded: wild, raw and with fuzz guitar all over. Bunalim (which means "depression" or "frustration" in Turkish), founded in 1969, was one of the most well-known underground groups on the Turkish music scene of the early '70s. Although their discography is limited to only a few singles, Bunalim is regarded as a seminal band in Turkish music history, who paved the way for its members to find fame later on in their careers (playing with Erkin Koray, Mogollar, Ter, Edip Akbayram). Bunalim released 6 singles which are incredibly rare, and never completed a whole album. They were produced and managed by legendary Turkish rock musician and instigator of the Anatolian rock movement Cem Karaca, one of the most important rock singers in Turkey during the 1970s. This release is a blend of their work from 1970-1972, and features everything from American-influenced garage to early punk experiments to fuzzed-out psychedelic heavy Eastern drone, including a cover of Iron Butterfly's "Get Out Of My Life, Woman" ("Yeter Artık Kadın") sung in Turkish. They say about the band: "God, they were crazy! Running all nude down the Istiklal Street, psychedelic light shows, crazy paintings all over the stage wall and screaming of LSD! LSD! in their live shows." As good as the best recordings from Erkin Koray, Bunalim are, even for most Turkish collectors, a well-kept secret. The LP version reissued by Shadoks sold out within a blink of the eye.

Artist: BLOPS
Title: Blops
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: 3CD BOX
Price: $48.00
Catalog #: SHAD 080CD
This is a 3CD compilation of the rare and beautiful complete works of Chile-based Blops. If you think you like El Congreso, if you love Kissing Spell and Embrujo, you will adore the music of Blops. The first album from 1970 is pure underground folk with some electric moments, the second from 1971 becomes more electric with touching songs which make you shiver and the third album from 1973 is completely electric and psychedelic with a progressive touch. Los Blops formed in 1970 when Eduardo Gatti (vocals and guitars), Julio Villalobos (guitars), Pedro Greene (drums), Andres Orrego (keyboards) and Juan Pablo Orrego (bass) performed covers (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Animals, Cream, Kinks) in a local club in Isla Negra, with additional changes in the band with the addition of members Sergio Bezard (drums) and Juan Contreras (flute and keyboards). Their first LP was recorded in 12 hours on a two-track machine and produced by DICAP (Discoteca Del Cantar Popular De Las Juventudes Comunistas), a label that was affiliated with Communist youth, whose tapes were later destroyed by the military. Their first concert at the Marconi Theatre showcased their own material and was recorded by a television crew. Their first LP includes a song that became a hymn that generations would continue to sing, "Los Momentos." Gatti and Orrego later reformed Los Blops in 1978, recording a single: "Los Momentos"/ "La Francisca," but they split again in 1980. The LP version of this box sold out quickly, and here is the CD version of it in a beautifully laminated heavy book-box, with 3CDs in jewel cases containing two non-LP extra tracks, limited to 1000 copies.

Artist: SHARK MOVE
Title: Ghede Chokra's
Label: SHADOKS MUSIC (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SHAD 086CD
Indonesian rock pioneers Shark Move started playing in Bandung, Indonesia in 1970 and was founded by Benny Soebardja, who plays lead guitar and sings. The group combined rock music and English lyrics with traditional harmonies and progressive sounds. While other bands at that time were still playing sweetened pop music, this was really an experimental recording for the time and place it was made. Unfortunately, at the end of 1970, the keyboard player passed away, so Benny decided not to continue with his band and formed a new one named Giant Step (which might come out soon on Shadoks music). Ghede Chokra's is a very complex prog album which is as strong as many good UK albums of the same period, with that little something extra that makes this album unique and great.
