"There's definitely something real big taking charge here! Mr. Raumschmiere flashes his two-finger British fuck-off pose as if it just took just two to do all the work - straight up punk attitude. His new EP/CD titled The Great Rock'n'roll Swindle doesn't just gleam with presence of mind but actually ends up being a great big lie. What we have here rocks and rolls in quite a major way. So where's the swindle? The opening title track knocks down pins as seldom heard before. It belongs in every real DJ's first-aid kit for those moments when the crowd is waning in need of a boost. The unmistakable gnarz-bass battles venomous melodies in a high-tech web. It's a track for all thugs with a prep-school degree. First slam it in your face and then think about it later. Sami Koivikko doesn't fuck around with the remix long, shamelessly plunging the scenery into a rave-mood without loosing the bounce. Up next and once again there's the techno-punk T.Raumschmiere: his fuck-off fingers pound the 'enter' key', hitting the system with flatulent bass noises that burst into soundscape crackles, which he probably borrowed from label-mate Apparat ? "Napoli is not Nepal, Shitkatapult is not Karaoke Kalk -- nothing is as it already was before. Hendryk Bayrhoffer follows the charming logic of his artist's name with the full-length release Revolv_er, a relaxed hoax of mysterious connections that appear hidden beneath the truth. In so doing, this Cologne musician by-passes copy-paste samples and instead appropriates solid jazz musicians onto his hard drive who all carry his name. Napoli Is Not Nepal grabs us gently by the ears with the last church-day motto 'du stellst meine fuesse auf weitem raum' ('you put my feet into vast space') and takes us delicately into an unknown world made of lo-fi swabs that slowly but surely begin to turn. In 'A Night Outside the Bunker' a hippie-style guitar digs steadily into even downbeat valleys in order to guide the way. The 'Electrobastard' cuts the path like an adulterous song from air. An insight floats towards us from the loudspeaker of the psycho-delicatessen shop: 'this world is sound moving around.' Right on, feet remain standing in vast space and only the world underneath moves while a western-style guitar plays lonely loops in bangkok -- as if sobbing. A portable piano is pulled out and swings to the emotive crackling lines of the jazz sonnet 'Selma.' A beaten-up trumpet whispers with the glissandi of a peace-style guitar that shoots sparks from a cosmic camp-fire in order to exclaim: 'l'univers c'est moi.' A vibraphone sends its sound waves like some donated life into the ether. A vocoder transforms prayers from nightly depths. "Damn Swedes, Shitkatapult gets frosty! 'Replik' is the fitting title this 29 year-old Goeteborger, Anders Ilar, has chosen for his clear gletscher-like winter-techno 12'. Trimmin' up where Edward Scissorhands cut off, Anders seems to be slicing three laissez-faire ice sculptures from Shitkatapult's frigid repertoire. For 'Replik', he finally grabs the ice-pick and carves the name Shitkatapult in big letters up on the shimmering green, iced ceiling of the Skagerak. He does this just in case T.Raumschmiere comes flying through on a wild goose looking for a landing place. The techno bat strikes into the suffocating and echoing surface without sense or hesitation. Fine rips split sound tracks into the depth and hit rock bottom. It's true, northern lights, as them Swedes know, make insomnia a regular occurrence so that depression is met again. Complete pragmatism comes from Sweden and has unveiled itself as a real exported craze in the shape of Abba, furniture, and pornos. The principle is that ideas must work."

"Phon.o comes out of his playpen with a crushing package and supplies Shitkatapult with four monstrous turds as lethal munitions -- the shit is hot. This Berlin man has the digestion of a power plant and a rectum like pliers; one with which you could tweak the Eiffel tower. With that he serves up crude raw materials consisting of Hiphop and Breakbeats, Techno and Dub which become raucous monsters of an intimidating size. In 'The Weird Soap' beats the size of a bat bang away in precise cut-up scratch scenes of a looped television. 'The Garagedude V2' is a plowing, intelligent beast of a track even if it's on the tragic side: it's about a folk singer with an acoustic guitar who wants to cross himself via teleporter with a laptop in a self-made experiment; however he fails to achieve the materialization out of this digital make up. 'What is kleingehacktes?' is in no need of an explanation as phon.o skips in zigzag mode across the dance floor while slapping his open hand. Like a thunder-gnarz, the gadget takes apart the helium-suffocated last words of an MC who just asked the wrong man the wrong question. For dessert Phon.o gives out a piece of 'Sachertorte Am Morgen' tasting best when consumed in a techno-armchair. You can smell it all the way to America when Phon.o releases his digital-pop flatulence. It's no wonder that Kit Clayton demanded a stool sample for his label Cytrax, from which three tracks have already been completed. 'Mokkastübchen' is Phon.o's second EP on Shitkatapult and it really just has this title as camouflage. Were it ever to come to a celebrity death match in the states, a battle against Prefuse 73 would be promising for this 25 year-old German -- the element of surprise being on his side."

"Shitkatapult has snagged three songs for a 12" release which will almost immediately earn the respect of the directionless masses, late-punks, and post-ravers. Here we go with the funky aerobics for released reservists of the highest rank who fuse bodily conditioning with mental fixation. This happens before any visit is possible to the Portuguese street cafes of your given breakfast hood. 'Wir sind und wir bleiben die Unreparierten' merges two girls' silver voices with the unparticipatory tone of an automated subway intercom to the point where all waiting passengers are dancing in synch with the chorus line. 'Sturm brich los' comes as an electro-shock and whoever dared go near the EBM-niche of the early 90s will hear alarm bells ringing. Yup, it's all about a hi-tech cover version of the equally titled Tommi Stumpff piece from a 1991 LP Trivial Shock, which the former musician actually sees as his worst record. 'Gnadenlos' is yet another Stumpff text from the year 1989 which has breaking relevance in context with the forever-current 80s hype. 'Verkauf dich so schamlos wie noch nie' could be referencing the inflation-like relaunches of past heroes and anti-heroes insinuated as a self-ironic typical German synth-pop-dance-floor-smash-hit. "

"Anders Ilar is an ol' bastard. First he seduced us with winter-techno and then he gave us a cure in the form of an ambient pill we had to swallow. Now he is packing three completely different tracks onto one 12" for at least 23 dance floors. What's he up to? At least there's DJ fodder for everyone! It is said that freezing to death is peculiarly more pleasant than other fatalities. As if kissed by the Schneekönigin herself, one sinks into self-loathing with 'Hydro' and gets drunk by the hydrostatic depths of the frozen soul-mometer. White cotton-ball harmonies float, suppressed and held by a short line, to the naturally glossed waves of bass-strings made of elk organs as thick as an arm, which simulate osmotic melodies out and about. One used to call it Trance but we hate this word because it was terribly overdone. So we'll take this opportunity to call it Trans: Transporter-Musik."

"Debut full-lengther that hits you with a mean one-two combination that ought to throw you back to the dance floor every time. Sounds like Berlin, but he's really from Finland. The ten perfectly synched tracks push rapidly through this album, not in any real rush to get to where they're going, but rather more driven by a malevolent urge to hunt down unsuspecting road kill-to-be from time to time. The road kill is that perception that good techno died back in 2001. This is definitely something for the dance floors but not the meat markets, even if it means dancing alone on a crowded floor. Still one can certainly understand Salmiakki as techno-listening, if you will. It's this modest yet distinct presence animating you like a dream of rhythm. Daytime thieves, butterfly collectors, music empathizers, emotional doofs, they should all be able to make some sort of discovery on Salmiakki. Sami Koivikko's subtle emotional shifts are simply a ton of fun. There are long-lasting riffs, miniaturized melodies, vague signs swaying between melancholic joy and harmonic sense, always well hidden in the logical web of elements."

"It's time to start 2004 with some retribution. 4 Fois Le Petit Mort summarizes four tracks of music into one that we would die for: cross-cutting work on Shitkatapult's sound without any residual handicap. Whoever had hoped for an extension of drum n bass crimes should now look to call the serious fraud office. 4 Fois Le Petit Mort is the right ammo for the DJ magazine when blow up dolls and cardboard persons block the dance floor. The 'Sägemann' dresses up as a dentist who is pushing down his nervous foot onto the bass pedal of the patient's chair, thus giving the gnarz-sound some root treatment. Is someone trying to up the ante here at Raumschmiere's throne? 'Klink Jive' is the shuffling night sister under minimal techno vibes and a runner in every rubber clinic amongst patients with open legs. The concept of 'Klick Klick' could easily be heavyweight rawkus garage at marching tempo. It's a track for the trucker disco with free parking for a 40-ton truck. Last but not least, the 'Zerstäuber' dies a small death in the final groove. This doesn't happen without sending a 101 guide to broken rhythm schemes through the pa for IDM-SAT test-takers. This is the perfect record for in-between two Shitkatapult discs."

Anne is hard working, lives in London, works in a restaurant, and has a thirteen-hour day. John Lane, also from London, is a bank employee and the typical nine-to-fiver. Breakfast hours are regulated strictly. This is the deeply sharp plot of 'Clockwise,' the identical name from the piece on Hakan Lidbo's Shitkatapult EP (Strike 38 from 2003). That one swerved with a musical narration between pulp'n'bass and yap-phonics painted by undertones of toothpaste and edible sounds. The actual interesting part about Anne and John's catchy stories remains in the fantasy of the listener. In some way it stays open, whether or not they both know each other, maybe even fuck, given a nice lunch break. As for fucking, it was obvious that Hakan Lidbo wouldn't forget to finger the ol' label whores at Shitkatapult. In so doing, it will only be a short while before the Proms are called up and turned onto pushing a special version of 'Clockwise.' Sibegg, Brighton Noodles Imperialist, is busy transplanting Anne and John's story into a British undercover-agent comedy. A bomb is ticking, suspicious signs strike keys conscientious of accusations as the protagonists stutter, since the emergency number isn't working with Dr. No in charge of the bass-buzzer on the power lines. Hakan's punkslut Minimix has nothing but quacking spite for Anne and John's day in day out routine, coming and going as fast as the point of a ridiculous joke. Apparat, that old fogy, winds the tempo down so far until it's running backward since it's nighttime and John is dreaming Anne's dream. Matthew Dear, the platinum boy from Ghostly International who respectively gave the minimal techno experience life and enjoyment in 2003, shuffles with Anne and John in the clacking and scratching infinity of reduction, where beginning and end always hang out in the middle. Vinyl has been pressed for all those who like to see big names united on one record without needing to switch the plate. The CD is complete with all the tracks and remixes of the EP as well as an extra mini-movie for home use. Hair dressers would be smart to buy it for their salons, where people like Anne and John go to have their hair done up. Of course there will be others who gaze in the mirror and wonder about it."

"Germany and the others! It can't go on like this! Das Beirbeben churns forth this time with a whole agenda of timeless white wine wisdom. Its deducible quality from the system is as overdue as the revolution of commercially viable target groups between the ages of 14 and 49. No Future No Past is a poetic album for the modern dissident ethos. It is the mobilization of the fraternity with a polemic banner and the vengeance of the mirror image with its original -- the cream of the crop of German brewing art forms. It's a huge downer that one can't guzzle this music with its rockversive booze-pop being pumped from an infinite keg. It's not just that the dial is on par, but the synth and emo-phonetics here also find a home beyond the eighties somewhere between today and a forgotten time. Each track comes along so powerfully that these people from the Bierbeben have no choice but to embrace any accusation of over-achievement. Even the four old ham tracks from their previous EPs receive a new finish. All songs are as much danceable in public as all alone at home. You can listen to all of them one after the other even the one with Jake The Rapper, who is a guest on this record and is loved by almost everyone. One comment in regard to the lyrics: fuck yeah! It's not so bad that this music will appeal to folks who wear cute sweaters with 'Hamburg' or 'Berlin' printed on them. Bierbeben has even composed a track for them: 'File Up In Line'. Then there are two videos to watch on a computer since your TV must be broken by now and since it's twice as nice to see them in double vision. Damn straight we're not worthy."

Anyhow Whignomy vs Robag Wruhme build up a Tricky style disco with plenty of acid-punch. What does a woodlouse hear under the rug? Pieces that stink like dust mites. Brina Vino elaborates: 'I'm still sick from yesterday.' Wolf Dosenbiermann: 'Egypt?' Der Osten: 'I'm lucky my name isn't on this.' Peter Grummich buttons up 'Reproduktion' for himself and programs a lasagne layer by layer out of Gnüdel with Rockfleisch-sauce. "Musick is the brand spanking new underwear line from Shitkatapult for quick reaches into your record bag. There are three dirty joints that peel off from the material where the needle drops. Gwem's dramatic rave ballad 'Small Hours' is fit for an early Sunday morning. Grime sits on the backburner of an auto-scooter given the artist is from London. The cerebral words glide with the mental downfall of a hydrofoil over emotions wound up by the snare-sweeper. Small melodies stick like tears underneath the pits of raised arms. The guitar solo works its way heavily with a bare chest right through the middle of the track. Oh yeah, Gareth Morris is Gwem, a heavy metal dude and Atari ST/old school rave DJ (the E stands for E). Brett's Holz is a gnarly cubbard made with professional skipper technology. It sounds a little like the after-thoughts from T.Raumschmiere's brain, as if they ever really existed anyhow. Peter Grummich pours filigran-techno into the infinite groove and bangs out an epic one, maybe even two, with challenging subtlety. Even this one is bound to find gifted and technically versatile dancers, however no where close to those trampling animals from Riverdance who are not allowed to move their upper bodies. "Drugbeat are Motor, but with vocals. Motor are Bryan Black and Olivier Grasset. Black is originally from Minneapolis and has worked with Prince. Frenchman Grasset is said to be a world-class drummer. They are also the band Xlovers. They are doing a Throbbing Gristle remix for Mute, a little record on Novamute, and right now they're working on a Marilyn Manson remix with Felix Da Housecat -- a remix of Manson's remix of 'Personal Jesus'. You could add a few more examples of their likely glory, but for Musick, Drugbeat put the blueprint for this industrial, sugar-coated electro basher straight to vinyl. Zurich-based Uese (Urs Jeitsch), the would-be drummer of a hardcore band, is producing electronic music instead -- and he's not the only one. 'Cucuzza' is a longish pumpkin plant. In this case it's fodder for the high-speed rack-railway with side-rods und Samba wagons, for a journey into the grey zone on twisted tracks with juicy tunnel inserts. Holz sands this splinter of saw-tooth techno and gets an A+ in woodwork class. The guys at the back will not get away unpunished -- with at least two lunch-breaks of being locked in the girls' bathroom. President Ido is a promoter from Osaka, 23 years old and a mighty good DJ. The boss says Cutie Kantie is his girlfriend. 'Miss Orange' sounds like a mixture of 8doogymoto and Mouse On Mars, but who knows -- maybe Ido is also the Pres of the Japanese ghetto-tech faction -- and naturally they cook up their very own rice'n'shit variation."

2011 repress. Originally recorded for a Peel Session at the BBC in 2004, Silizium EP is a full-length release from Berlin-based Apparat. "A balance between things that you know people will like and things that you think people will like" is what John Peel had to say on his homepage about Apparat's music programming concept. John Peel passed away a few months later from a heart attack while vacationing in Peru. Apparat (Sascha Ring) could only find a more fitting farewell mood with the rerecording of his session: a sonic dedication to a huge mentor from Shitkatapult and their people. Apparat is known as a fluctuating mood-maker by way of his computer companion, swinging the composer's stick with emotion and conducting pieces of lonely melancholic beauty with godly discretion. New strings are thanks to the violin and cello of Kathrin Pfänder and Lisa Stepf aka Complexácord, whose soul-drenched expression lets your mind sway, as they harmonize with dreamlike perfection. It reminds one once again of the experimental modus operandi combining classical instruments with electronic music. Singer Raz Ohara and clarinet/sax player Hormel Eastwood find their chosen virtuous and emotional space on this promising cloud. New Hakan Lidbo project, with remixes by T. Raumschmiere and Beate Bartel. "Quasimodo Jones and Kid Rock are the same sides of a 5 cent coin. They both stand at eye level on the stoop of the entrance to their RV in a trailer park of White Trash USA. Their musical affinity is not only similar to ringing bells made of silicone, but they also speak with an aggressive tone when it comes to their brutal images. The direct comparison to Kid Rock is of course a stinking farce cause he's a lazy bum. Quasimodo Jones has already recorded 23 albums that he made himself. The records were never released because they were ahead of their time. Quasimodo Jones makes 'Rock with 70s plugins and his guitar'. As a producer he was able to blackmail Hakan Lidbo who will supposedly receive a first class star-banner on his gravestone. Rock'n Roll Dream hit first place with readers of 'Hustler' magazine in the category of hog-rotten rock songs. This is why T.Raumschmiere drops off a remix with only one hand. Even the astounding Beate Bartel heard about it from the center of the earth where she has been residing of late. From here she sends her recordings against the laws of gravity straight up a shaft directed at select groups. 'Somebody stop me before I kill again,' the other piece of Quasimodo Jones, is of another caliber maybe 22mm spooky electro. The nice thing about this record is, moreover, that it's not an album. That one's still on the way says the official smog warning coming from the Shitkatapult camp. But who really is Quasimodo Jones? Jones is an orphan from Wisconsin and also a tramp who cites the riddim of train-wheels as an early musical influence. He learned to drink, throw down, and accept Elvis as King from his stepfather. His mother taught him to scream since that's how he came out into the world thanks to her alcohol and heroin abuse. Even though he never handled it well, Jones was allowed to stay at home since school was regarded as something for rich snobs by his caretakers. His first experience on stage was at the tender age of 8 with the Oak Ridge Boys. His second performance was with a stolen guitar from the neighboring kid where he sang Elvis songs and ended up in juvi. This is where he first discovered smoking up along with other drugs. He is most proud of having hit his stepfather in the face with a baseball bat, knocking all of his teeth out as he fell from a tree onto the ground. His favorite show is Alf."

A technoid album for the dub and reggae freaks. This is the long-awaited debut album from Berlin-based Lars Fenin, the man who symbiotically fuses techno and dub for Shitkatapult. After founding his own reggae band in Berlin called Tribal Notes, he quickly became familiarized and directly involved with the early burgeoning electronic music from Berlin's expanding club and music scene. His first 12" titled Herr Pitzelberger appeared in 2000 on Shitkatapult, and since then he has been at the core of the label. He followed with releases on Echochord, Meteosound, and Textone. Fenin's productions have little to do with what is generally understood to be dub-techno or techno dub: rather than minimal techno tracks overloaded with effects, Fenin crafts old school, grounded productions that emerge from studio handiwork involving classic overdub techniques created live on a mixing board. The term "dub" thus derives from a much earlier incarnation and understanding of reggae. On Grounded, the musical spectrum is set pretty wide from technoid pieces like the deep "South" to the old school dub piece "Interlude"all the way to pure reggae songs like "No C.I.A." or "Thrill." The strength of the album is located where techno, dub, and reggae are brought closer together successfully.

5th volume in this series, featuring: Autoplump, Das Bierbeben, Scapegoat, Magnum 38. "After the last few Musick records kicked ass this one is even better. For the most part this is accentuated best by the ending 'sick' since some market specialists may think they know better. Autolump is Fil Le Gonidec, who jump-started his career as the roadie for Killing Joke and the orb as the Internet says. His track is titled 'God Speed' fittingly and is quickstep house of Biblical wonders or even deep religious convictions stocked with all the visions that one may come to expect from the creators. 'Staub' from Das Bierbeben is being served here as Robag Wruhme's vodka-quake schnakker. These Jena-bred clowns sonically resemble colleagues like The Soft Pink Truth or Mouse On Mars which results in a type of knee-deep excess including bonafide digressions into pop-clouded realms. At Shitkatapult Felix is called Scapegoat and at Freizeitglauben Berlin he's Donna K. 'Anticipate' is no track but more or less a moody Hack'n'Slay party with a bonus level and goodbyes from Max Payne at the end. It's a grand pounding from the techno-shredder up against any hesitation. And since DJs also want to dance you can just let the record go until Magnum 38's 'Alligator' ends up being the consolation prize. No mouse will take a bite out of the fader, as they say in industry terminology."

Berliner techno-minimalist guru Peter Grummich's new album Switch Off The Soap Opera. After almost twenty years of DJing, Grummich looks a lot like someone who is concealing a shoddy rave monster that crept into him the past decade or so. He likes to wade barefoot in the bass since his is cushioned quite well and is nice on your skin, three or four layers as it is. Grummich trips rather seldom, instead he varies in dance-like tiptoe steps, steady-paced. If he loses his tact the robots are likely to be blamed, showing us that he doesn't lack humor as minimal musicians often like to make us believe. He could have succeeded as a carnie hypnotist with those eyes of his; instead he gazes deeply into the soul of his tracks until they are graced with the hypnotic spark that emanates from his ear. This happens when the layers find their synapse equilibrium in loops, which shouldn't be all too innocent for the brain when those big waves are set in motion. The setting is a bit stuffy since there are a lot of danceable sounds putting the room under pressure, but hey, at least it's never cold. Airing out only occurs when the party is had, which surely comes from a true minimal jump-off of this sort.

"Maybe we were too blockheaded of not having properly introduced our Musick-To-Play-In-The-Club-star Holz (German word for 'wood'). But now that his smartly titled EP Mein Block (my block) is on its way it is about time for us to apply the jemmy in order to see, who is behind that moniker, that stands for vibrating planks of techno. Born in 1985 René Finken is a twenty year-old student and other than his music suggests he is not from Berlin but from the city of Aachen near the Dutch border, where he studies German and English language and literature as well as philosophy. At the age of 6 he started playing keyboards and when he was 16, he fell in love with electronic music triggered by some freeware tracker software named Buzz, that allowed him admittance to the netaudio scene. In 2004 he debuted with the title 'Brett' (English: plank) on Musick 02, a gnarzy cupboard from the picture book of his mentor in chainsaw operations T.Raumschmiere, one could guess, and he left a 'Splitter' (English: splint) on Musick 03, which was difficult to remove from one's ears. René also publishes as Renniac on a netlabel called Stadtgruen and makes music with a friend as Tha Diskonerdz. Concerning the record. 'Axt' (English: axe) is the most self-rotating piece of techno since 'Querstromzerspaner' (English: shredder-grinder) by T.Raumschmiere, who fortunately for Holz now is into rock and ambient. Mein Block goes out to all the blockheads who cannot get enough of joiners joy behind their bark. 'Glut' (English: blaze) concludes the record with suspicious signs of an after-hour party including subliminal Laura Palmer reminiscence areas."

This may already be a hit for Halloween, and this song should be mentioned in one breath with the foot stank of Usher, Timbaland and the Neptunes, whereas Kevin Blechdom smells more like Missy Elliott and Destiny's Child. This is the first mix compilation at Shitkatapult selected and mixed by DJ Peter Grummich. This tech-house ode to partying is being released in order to prove that Shitkatapult and the Berlin club Maria don't merely join forces for live shows, but also love collaborating in high-gloss stereo sound. The story starts in 1998 as the Berliner techno circus of the '90s was slowly suffocating in serenity. The club Maria at the Ostbahnhof was founded by five local artists and geared towards an ambitious concept of "dance music." Heavily emphasizing "intelligent" in the front and "live" programming in the back, club Maria quickly became a home base for art spectacles like the Transmediale or even alternative events to the Loveparade like the Interference Festival. Their booking history has earned a reputation from then until now, known for strong content without boundaries. Shitkatapult's yearly Shitparade is clearly the high point for all those who bust their ass for the label to bring you the right content. This goes for Peter Grummich as well who proved himself as the best choice for this mix comp after his six hour DJ set. His uncompromising style aimed at the party to the point where thunder comes crashing down never gets uncomfortable for the listener. French chanteuse Judith Juillerat presents her impressive debut album, fittingly called Soliloquy. For those quick to compare one can already mention her in the same breath along with Barbara Morgenstern or Gustav. Judith's electronic songwriting feeds off of a rich repertoire of whimsical musical figures and fancy tousled sounds. But in its perfect aesthetic balance it resembles imaginatively superimposed calligraphies in which every single sweep and stroke, each twist and turn, leads to an inspiring, meaningful expression. Soliloquy arrests attention with a paradoxical casualness that develops an irresistible attraction. An almost compelling voyeuristic element can hardly be dismissed while listening. You become an ear-witness attending an unexpected occasion of intimate and stirring moments. Melodies composed with little bugs, a mature composure in tempo, the intertwining free flow, plus freely interfering fragments unfolding an oppressive yet unrestrained beauty, all beckon to question the back-breaking, overly styled pettiness of daily routines. Judith finds her musical expression through improvisation and spontaneity, and she cites artists such as Can, Amon Düül, Einstürzende Neubauten, Tarwater or Apparat as sources of inspiration. It should not go unmentioned that Soliloquy was produced without a computer. Playing with old and new analog and digital synthesizers and beat boxes, a mini-sampler, effect machines, a microphone as well as acoustic instruments such as the piano and guitar. Track by track, she puts her songs and soundscapes together using a multi-track recorder. Whether this kind of old school production technique can be understood as the reason for the maturity of her music remains to be seen.

After Sascha Ring aka Apparat paid tribute to the beauty of melancholy and loneliness on his last album Silizium, now he connects melancholy with the necessary push to the dance floor on Berlin, Montreal, Tel Aviv. These tracks were recorded live over the course of the last year in the most prolific clubs in each of the named cities. The warm melodic parts are carried by abstract beats. It grows into powerful, freeing eruptions after the lengthy build-up of suspense. "Berlin" is thus the deepest track on this EP and is great fodder for DJs who have the courage to get emotional. "Montreal" contains parts from the opera Pia and is an electro track that also utilizes some synth pop elements. "Tel Aviv" is the most pulsating track on the EP and gives us a more unknown look into the darker sides of Apparat's soul. All this is counteracted with some absurd happy melodies.

"Im Kreis" was knocked out as one of the several hits on the album and is being released with two Cristian Vogel remixes on this 12". Both remixes are totally different from each other and could not be more unique, yet there still is a strong connection to the original: side A has the familiar Vogel monster with heavy bass throbbing, breaking drums time and again and suddenly everything comes together into a broken whole. Berliner Marco Haas aka T.Raumschmiere is back home with his new full length work on his own Shitkatapult label. Random Noize Sessions Vol. 1 features a collection of lost studio and live recordings from the past six years (1999-2005). Music-wise these tracks follow the same idea as the Anti album on Hefty records (Chicago, 2002) -- dark ambient tracks, beats and pictures: random noize. From the beginning to the applause-ending (from his ambient live set in Düsseldorf church, Johanniskirche) this whole CD is a breathtaking movie, and in the best tradition of dark Asian movies fighting the new minimal deal. Titles like "In The Ghetto," "Radikal Mediation," "Neulich Im Bestattungs-Discount" follow the general T.Raumschmiere idea. After his major releases on Novamute, Random Noize Sessions Vol. 1 is not only a new album, but also a missing link between his punk techno anti-spectacle and his inner vision of techno/ambient music. These are traditional new music footprints following Robert Hood or Mike Ink, and married to influences from great artists like Coil or Steve Albini. Free of any chic or trendy idea, Random Noize is purely sick music at its best. This is the fifth full-length release from Sweden's infamous electronic producer, Anders Ilar. Ludwijka (Extended Visit) is an extended version of a small vinyl edition formerly released on Merck Records -- and a wonderful musical trip through dark, but warm territory. Besides the tracks on the original vinyl EP you will find on this CD a 19-minute monster bonus track masterpiece. As planned by Mr. Ilar, this CD does not offer any silence, any break between the tracks, any 3-minute thinking or any deejay friendliness. It's an intense and extended visit into Anders Ilar's world and history -- a sonic rendering of his hometown of Ludvika. As Anders himself describes: "...for the tracks here I used a lot of sounds that I found on old tapes from my childhood ('77-'79) singing and talking and playing the piano or just making noises. So all the little voices you can hear in there are actually me. Then I made some new recordings last year -- I recorded more piano, and I asked my father to play a few tones on his old trumpet. Also some noises from the cat were used. The crow calling was provided to me by Swedish radio for a remix project, and some other bird sounds were found on the Internet. And musically, it's probably inspired by all the music I've listened to over the years. So you see, it's a very personal album for me."

His collaboration with Ellen Allien, the critically-acclaimed album Orchestra of Bubbles, forged electrifying new connections between techno, electro and pop music. Somewhere in between all the laud and acclaim and touring, he managed to record his first solo studio album since 2003's Duplex. Despite its title, Walls isn't about dividing lines. Instead, it describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle and roam free: strings and mallet instruments; rock guitar and gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion and muscular studio drumming. Lost + Found (1998-2000) is the never-released follow-up album to 1998's Via Nostra by Berlin's Sun Electric (Max Loderbauer, Tom Thiel). Who is Sun Electric? Sun Electric is to ambient music what The Sex Pistols was to punk music. But since electronic music abandoned the pathetic poses of rock music, nobody had to die to make this unique band history. The Sun Electric members are regarded as innovators of ambient music -- or electronic listening music or intelligent dance music -- depending on what you prefer. After electronic music exploded in the late '80s/early '90s, the music seemed more or less to be restricted to forming the heartbeat of homogeneous party crowds. Like The Orb's Alex Paterson, Loderbauer and Thiel allowed the sounds to detach themselves from the action on the dancefloor to lead a life of their own. After having released six albums on the R&S/Apollo label, Loderbauer and Thiel lost interest in their hardware equipment and explored computer-based modes of music production. Lost + Found is more than an archaeological find, it's the rediscovery of electronic music as an alien experience, as a sonic challenge. Thiel and Loderbauer avoid the pathetic narcissism of overproduction: the plague in current electronic music production. Lost + Found was recorded in the three successive years after Sun Electric's final album was released in 1998. Listening to Lost + Found, one might feel like visiting a jungle: the music creates a complex soundscape, reminding of the noises of weather conditions and the sounds of a multitude of unknown animals. While current electronic music triggers the movements of the dancer's bodies like an aerobics class, the effects of Sun Electric's music on mind and body are complex and open.

This is the second full-length release from Berlin's Lars Fenin for the Shitkatapult label. From his start in the late-'90s up until now, Fenin has crafted a unique dub techno trademark sound. However, Been Through steps out of the dub techno circus to involve much more. Rhythm-wise, you can recognize that the dubstep era influenced the Berlin producer: 4-to-the-floor beats have been replaced by strong broken patterns that evoke a dancefloor feeling but with their subtle breaks and moves, develop into a unique approach to electronic dancehall. Fenin is also accompanied by fantastic guests -- Gorbi, a Berlin-based singer from Ghana, lends his unique voice to four tracks on this record. Far away from being a wanna-be Jamaican reggae toaster, Gorbi showcases a real African singer spirit in his work. If you are looking for the original reggae tip of Been Through, you might prefer Jamaican toaster Scorcha with whom Fenin created "Complain," which is a first-class digital riddim. To make it a classic Fenin album, you can also still taste the dub techno beat on tracks like "Miles and More" and the first single track "Breakin." "Breakin" is a little machine -- it merges the dub techno and dubstep fever with a taste of electronic pop. Abstract fun and deep grooves. This is the first full-length release from the collaborative project by Berlin producers and DJs Chris de Luca and Phon.o aka CLP. Rising from Berlin's underground, CLP are forging their own definition of funk, throwing together old school hip-hop, dirty South synth-sounds, early Miami-bass and crunk. CLP sent their instrumental-tracks to talented and -- with some exceptions -- mostly unknown rappers in the U.S. and South-Africa. The result is an explosive mixture of styles -- from dirty techno to ghetto beats. Truly supercontinental, indeed. De Luca gained international recognition as one-half of Funkstörung -- most notably remixing the likes of Björk and the Wu Tang Clan -- but they went their separate ways in 2006. Phon.o's DJ'ing specialty mixes techno with speeded up hip-hop instrumentals, and in Berlin he's one of the few DJs that play ghetto-tech, Miami-bass and crunk. Now, under the name CLP, they bring together the best of both worlds: their stoic braveness in experimenting with strange new sounds, and a new fondness for ass-kickingly explicit pop songs. On old drum machines the code CLP meant "claps." When the Sugarhill Gang switched the snaredrum on "Rappers Delight" to handclaps, they turned things around, creating on vinyl the sense of a party crowd clapping the beat for the rapper. CLP borrowed this old block-party idea and the philosophy of letting anyone who's got skills get on the mic. There's only one problem: there aren't so many block-parties going on in Berlin - and a lot of Berlin rappers are too caught up in gangstawannabe posturing. So CLP looked elsewhere, using Myspace to find talented MCs in other parts of the world. The project flourished with an exchange of ideas, beats, and vocals, making their way back and forth across the Atlantic. It's time to get ready for some intergalactic hip-hop, ghetto beats, sexy booty IDM and dirty techno. In a way, the Detroit-esque FM interplay "Signals" and the trad-house homage of "Grace" seem to herald a new chapter or classic B-side. All of a sudden, there is more levity, more treble, more light and clarity, culminating in the gloriously-mumbled vocal track "In The Mood." A huge club hit and eminently listenable, its snappy lyrics stick in your brain long after the last chord has faded. In-your-face beats, off chords, techno bass -- done. A brief respite for weary souls, the remaining three tracks float dreamily through the evening sky: "Schön Feddich" and "Opener" plus the piano exercise "Reclam," with the latter skirting dangerously close to a kitsch-infused piss-take. The album's artwork -- courtesy of Bianca Strauch -- shows a photograph by Daniel's sister Kathrin Peters and depicts the garden of an old bourgeois home. Beautiful classicism, just like this album.

Shitkatapult's first album release in 2010 is the exciting debut by New York and Berlin group Notic Nastic. It's Dark But It's Okay tells a story about a girl as she grows up and changes a lot. Not a real coming of age thing, but more a collage of life. The soul of the story is that no one is just one character. We will each be 1,000 different things to 1,000 different people in the world... ID is slippery. The album features a great deal of electronic music, kicking, forward, disturbing, as well as easy, pop music based on fat beats. Right off the bat, the first three songs "Let Go," "Stupid Happy" and "Secret Life" grow an intense mixture of music elements that remind you of some cocktail of Missy Elliot, T.Raumschmiere and the typical Shitkatapult out-of-nowhere style. A perfect picture of a human life that assembles the results of the neverending morphs we all go through. The album also fantasizes about the quiet, inner vision you have of yourself that no other person will ever completely see or understand: "The Secret Life." Notic Nastic draws this riddle in musically-perfect praxis: 13 songs blend fast breaks, variable parts, catchy refrains and disturbing, but always grooving, breaks and bridges. Notic Nastic makes pumping, popped-out, strangely addictive electronic bon-bons where twisted vocals meet freaky beats. Besides this fantastic debut album, Notic Nastic has already drawn great feedback with their live-performances. They wear glowing masks and put out big beats. This is the long-awaited debut album from Germany's Xenia Beliayeva. Since her first releases on Anthony Rother's Datapunk label, Xenia Beliayeva developed a certain style that she has now mastered. Her first album on T.Raumschmiere's Shitkatapult sets a landmark in the terrain of today's dance music: cool, dark, electronic. Tracks like "New Day," "Satellite," "Mind Damage" or the title-track "Ever Since" work far beyond the boundaries of club music and reach out to a larger audience. Combined with a futuristic style of love and shadows, Xenia Beliayeva puts this album, produced by mastermind André Winter, in the tradition of dark wave/pop music by the likes of Sisters Of Mercy, Human League, Soft Cell and others. The Franco-Canadian and Berlin-based producer Sheldon Thompson (aka Pan/Tone, Gringo Grinder ) aka Sid LeRock presents his third album Tout Va Bien, with 11 fresh and bright tracks that never stop rocking. All his work can be described as very personal electronic music that keeps on searching for the human touch -- the errors, wrong paths and trials that one can find in all creative works. The computer and electronic instruments are just alternate ways to create sound and rhythm, just as with drums, guitars, and bass. Sid Le Rock makes use of all these mediums and fights to stray away from the machine's calculated ways of the straight track. Human error is vital. Tracks such as "Swollen Member," "Incliner," and "Pow Wow" are examples of great, rocking, funk tunes with the typical Sid tchak (snare/clap/boom!) style, combined with classical, melodic rock riffs and techno bass patterns. And best of all, are the wonderful hidden gems with amazing vocal tracks such as "Still Life" and "Walk Alone" -- classical songs, classical moods, and wonderfully charming singing from a bearded man. After the bankruptcy of Ladomat, Sid LeRock was without a home, so he focused his attention on his other alias, Pan/Tone and his own imprints, Cereal/Killers and Beachcoma. As Pan/Tone, he released with Kompakt, Sender, and Sub-Static and completed some random productions as Sid LeRock with remixes for Depeche Mode, Gui Boratto, Fairmont and Placebo. It took him 4 years to return to a big Sid LeRock album, and it's about time.

Some people call it the renaissance of dub techno -- the deep, the twisted and the reverberant are returning to the dancefloor. Lars Fenin, born in Hamburg and living in Berlin, has been known for that kind of sound for more than ten years already, releasing ingenious stuff on Shitkatapult, Hör Zu, Echocord/Colour, Meteosound and his own label called Dock. Mixes & Maxis is a roundhouse kick of his current work: nine magical dub techno tracks, some of which have already been published on 12"s, but are now available on CD for the first time. Besides blueprint tracks like the brilliant "Done" or "Driven," and more current releases like "Romeo Kalimba" (great Echocord split maxi with "Deadbeat") as well as Fenin's dubstep hit "Seems Like," there are quite a few new treasures to be found here. "Adeto," for example, an incredibly deep ambient track, creating a musical ocean of black and dark blue waves. Just like the extremely funky "Division El Norte" and "Sound And Power" featuring renowned vocalist Gorbi, all tracks stand for quality and a certain groove as well as a natural connection between electronic music, techno and dub. The album's magical moment is an old friend in a new suit: "None Of Them," Fenin's evergreen also featuring Gorbi, has been remixed by Robag Wruhme. When he was still a part of Wighnomy Brothers, Robag had played "None Of Them" over and over again and had placed the track at the top of his DJ charts, so of course he was thrilled to remix the track. And what a remix it turned out to be -- a killer on the dancefloor and still a soulful techno track. The album in general is characterized by a certain timelessness, a constancy of music beyond the borders of electronic, dub or techno. It's depth and soul turning sound into music instead of a fleeting moment of hype. It is the renaissance of longevity, of the soul of music, which drives us all.

With the release of his fourth album, General Eclectics, Thomas Brinkmann breathes new life into his stellar side project Soul Center. Don't be misled by the album's title, though. Taken literally, General Eclectics will lead you astray not once, but twice. While the cover might allude to local noise merchants Einstürzende Neubauten's infamous Haus Der Lüge sleeve and Paolo Uccello's horse's rear, the album's inner sleeve is covered in maps, footballs, cigarette butts, priests, etc., each replete with their own rich history. Take the ashtray, for example: a work of art in itself that is both light-hearted and laden with meaning. It is Brinkmann's sense of appropriation (the eclectic side of things) and his interpretation of art/music/image/sound, that provides the red thread to connect the individual parts -- and concept -- of this album. Unlike Soul Center's previous works, the featured music is almost entirely devoid of samples and returns to a deep melange of techno's richer funk and soul flavors -- from the album's slowed-down opener, "Marmelade," right up to the final hands-in-the-air stomper "Dyr Bul Scyl." For this album, only two tracks include significant vocal usage and this time, the artist underlines the background of the lyrics. Aleksei Kruchenykh and Vladimir Majakovsky are two of the main writers of the Russian futurism of the 1920s. And we all need some more Russian futurism these days.

Tom Thiel seems to be unflappable. On his solo debut album (released quite late in his career), he doesn't make too much of an effort regarding zeitgeist and trends. And why should he? He has been a part of it all since forever, no need to prove anything to anyone. And "Pulse" is the beginning of a great album, located somewhere in the warm regions of the genre. Like a sine wave, the record swerves from house to electronica and even touches the latitudes of pure ambient. Apart from a couple of short pieces, there are nine-minute songs and psychedelic guitar compositions, rummaging around in the depths of music, all the while self-confident and playful. The songs are characterized not only by Tom's special musical handwriting, they also always ring of his previous productions (when he was with Sun Electric or Bus), mirroring those times. The past seems to be just a little while ago as well as now and soon. The alleged contradictions disappear in favor of more important, crucial elements of music, without ever sounding moldy or even out-dated. Wide melody lines, soft, complex beats or direct, simple beats: they speak a timeless language and thus represent the most modern side of electronic music.

This 12" by Shitkatapult pal Sid Le Rock (aka Pan/Tone) rocks the shit. "Devil's Night" is a serious 8+ minute smooth melodic techno piece from the hands of the Franco-Canadian-Berlin meister. The B-side opens up with a majestic Soul Center remix of "Made For You." Thomas Brinkmann re-arranges the original by adding a straight funkyness with filter warmth, bass drums and extra bass. "Hello Gorgeous" finishes it all off with surprisingly smooth, melancholy indie-rock and deep pop feeling.

Beatboxer, lyricist and singer Mark Boombastik finally releases his album Adiós Berlin, produced with Eduardo Delgado Lopez (bass guitar and more). No more pseudonyms, no frills, but intimacy between sense and nonsense: a grand record. Adiós Berlin is champagne and unpaid rent. It is love and hate -- it is a conviction and an absolution of the possibility to be different, to live differently. It is the mainstream suitability of the peculiar, like cooking without a recipe. It is tomato stains in a kitchen, scratches on a record, scars on a shin. It is a swan song and a new beginning. An album like a speech, between a cappella and beatbox, punk and rough cut -- techno and experiments for a special audience. Tracks like "Funkgeraet" and "Arbeit" whir more like they're in love than in danger. "1000" and "Hitze" sound like waking up after a big night and declaring a state of emergency. These guys got to know and love each other while raising their glasses to their common fondnesses for music, records, art, and architecture. Mark Boombastik has worked as a human beatbox and singer with the likes of Angie Reed, Funkstörung, Khan, Fischmob, Patric Catani, Felix Kubin, Max Goldt and many more . Eduardo Delgado Lopez has played with everyone who is anyone, but is especially known for playing bass with the Caspar Brötzmann Massaker. His radical, minimal and sequential playing seems to be made for Mark Boombastik's sharp beat(boxing). Adiós Berlin captures a lunatic zest for life.

With all those sets, tractors, technicians, software forums, updates and MP3 subscription discussions, we tend to forget about the nucleus of club music: record collectors. What we call techno, house, and so on today, was developed in Detroit and Chicago in an atmosphere of party, of mix tapes and of progressive radio shows. Styles, songs, ideas were mixed up, blended, amalgamated and from lust, new lust arose. DJ Lotti lives right in this atmosphere of record shelves, an endless source of love and inspiration to him. Calling himself The Sorry Entertainers, he plays -- no, he celebrates -- music on the open platforms of Berlin club culture. Soon he found himself in a spiral, a maelstrom of ideas and of trying out. He found some friends to produce his own songs with, which were already clearly defined in his head, which were already playing in his ear. With producers and musicians M. Rux and Raz Ohara, he's now releasing The Sorry Entertainers -- Local Jet Set, an incredibly warm and more than referential album, floating and swinging from actual club hits like "Jeopardize" or "End Of Times" to the deep "Moonshiner," based on the vocals of late blues and country star Roscoe Holcomb (courtesy of Folkways/Smithsonian). In between, there are sounds of Hawaii and Tokyo, from Berlin and India, from the '40s and the future. At no time does this music get stuck in a genre, in a trend, but moves in all directions, in an untroubled and airy fashion. Berlin-based singer Raz Ohara's vocals add another ingredient to the recipe and blends beats and strings, backgrounds and feelings to floating yet touching songs. This might be New Age, as was the title of the pre-released single, but it's the kind of new age that indulges in the old age and kicks, no cross-legged nonsense. Accompanied by a beautiful cover by Carsten Aermes which manages the balancing act between twisted neo-romanticism and Russian/Italian futurism of the '20s. The soul of images, the feeling of sound.

This is the third album from band/collective Warren Suicide, formed by Cherie and Nackt from Berlin. And this album is phantasmagorical, literally -- a declaration of peace, a gentle giant. Because after Hello/Warren Suicide and Requiem For A Missing Link, World Warren III abandons the disruption of genres and binary code, in favor of a third principle: Warren Peace. Duality does not mean conflict, but serves as a source for a new feeling: being able to pick one of the energies permanently alternating between "war and peace." Such is the sound of their music, confidently turning away from the past. WWIII is instead a story of science fiction and lust, an analog vision full of optimism. Songs like "In Love With The Enemy," "Animal Party" or "Moving Close" (with T.Raumschmiere as guest vocalist) whoosh, chirp and rumble with their very own, unheard-of groove. In many ways, O, released on Thrill Jockey after a nine-year break, was a second debut album for Markus Popp aka Oval. A radical break with old concepts and methods, a new beginning. While Popp's artistic approach in the 1990s and early 2000s was more of a structural, theoretical nature, O was just about the music itself. Themes such as the means of production, limitations, dogma and concept took a back seat to a musical sensibility. Instead of writing new software to synthesize and process sounds, for O, Popp dove into the heart of our preset-culture. He acquired a standard PC and only used the pre-installed sounds and plug-ins. With this ready-to-play machine and conventional musical instruments like the guitar and drums, a new chapter in the story of Oval was written. DNA is a mountain of an album: an audio CD with 25 tracks, each about three minutes long. Some are no longer than a minute. Here you'll find a collection of rare Oval pieces and 12 previously-unreleased tracks. DNA is a mixture of music from Markus Popp's various creative phases. It's surprising how old and new meld seamlessly together, and how, for Oval, formalism and musicality have produced similar results. Markus Popp has found an unmistakable musical language and declined it from A to Z. DNA, so to say, is the accompanying dictionary. Originally, this album was supposed to appear before O and conclude the "electronic" phase of Oval. DNA is intoxicating and wonderful. There is the intensive guitar work of the new pieces, an eruptive bundle of sounds, the sparkle and shimmer of high tones. The simultaneousness of countless events, unbelievably dense and at the same time secretly light. Disc 2 of DNA is almost something like an Open Source Manifesto: It contains the SoundBrowser/Sequenzer-Software OvalDNA and more than 2,000 Oval Sounds from various phases of Popp's work as individual AIFF files. The software and sound files are intended for music producers and are available to all without restrictions. Also included is a video documentation of PlayGroundTV/Madrid, the Glass UFO music video by AmberleyProductions/Berlin and 10 bonus tracks for the OvalDNA album as WAV files.
