"A successor to Soup in chronology only, this EP concerns itself with rampant use of computer sound processing technologies, a move certain to irk most who see a Bola as a tangible link between the Artificial Intelligence movement of nearly ten years ago (which itself was concerned with soft melody-oriented analogue textures and repetitive rhythms) and the 'neo-Artificial Intelligence' movement of today (producers like Passarani, recent Plaid, just about everything American or anything that gets too overwhelmed with the possibilities of contemporary digital sound design and related 'Autechretianisms', or production related effort in general). Not sure why this music is even relevant save for the Skam connection; the first track is a midtempo hip hop thing with vocoded vocals, the second a kind of midtempo tech-electro thing with industrial influences (sounds like a 'shapes' cast-off to these ears), the third an almost sub-Plaid downtempo thing with killer bleeps and first-tracky vocal bits, and the last another 'shapesey' one, pleasant enough if not a snoozer (but I suppose that's just it then, isn't it)." -- Hrvatski. "Corrupt Data is the result of the internet being used the artistically...the Funckarma brothers picked up Shadowhuntaz record 'Medic' on Plugresearch in 2000 and were so impressed by the sound they heard that they emailed them and offered there ample abilities in production. After Shadowhuntaz heard only one CD of a few remixes from Funckarma, they knew the album was going to happen between these two teams of men. With the advent of Data file transferring using program such as aol, icq and msn messengers created virtual Lab. During this process the error Warning 'Corrupt data' was occasional hazzard thus the name of the album was born. In 15 months time the two Dutch brothers made 35 tracks with the 3 American MC's, without seeing or speaking each other. This experiment in global village recording resulted in a sound that is a perfect mix of electronic music with hip hop vocals.

       The first result is a seven inch on skam records, Manchester, being followed by the debut album Corrupt Data in January 2004, to be followed up by twelve inch. With musical roots reaching further underground than liquid magma and lyrics with the heat to match. The Shadow Huntaz look at their place in hiphop as a para military organization, not militant, just conscience and with a sense of responsibility. The members are ranked in order of origin, the first being Shadow1 aka 'Breaff'. Based in Chicago, with the regional responsibility of Northeastern united states, Breaff's lyrical content can only be described as science non fiction with an uncontained non uniform style of delivery. The second member, Shadow2 aka 'Dream' is posted in the A.T.L. -Atlanta, GA. With the regional responsibility of the dirty south, 'Dream' code name Sabotoge is just that, an obstruction of normal operations. His lyrics will enter your mind causing a synaptic revolution, taking you to the darkest corners of your unconscious thought and not a moment to soon. Third is Shadow3 aka 'Non' based in Los Angeles with a regional responsibility of the west coast and beyond, including the 50th state. 'Non' is the spirit of the hungry MC incarnate, eating food for thought with a style that flips like pages in the book of life.

       If van Gogh was alive today and in Holland he would use his good ear to listen to what's emanating from Funckarma. One of the headleading musicians in electronic advanced music in the Netherlands. Soundscapes reverberate with a wall of melodies and echoes combined with complex crisp beat structures. The brothers Funcken, a sublime fusion of styles underpins their music as the esque percussion develops and becomes more complex. Cinematic music at it's most evocative. Call it electronic nuttiness that never fails to engage or abrasive, lush, haunting sound; a moving and viscerally intense evidence that Funckarma's music is full of emotion, mechanical, distorted and coming from a dark aesthetic funckarma material, displays more of 'intellectual appeal', requiring a certain barrier of entry to fully get into the music. trained ears and complete attention is definitely a requirement. sound to them is not a vehicle for there expression but in fact tools, mastered and use to make creations that are them selfs inspiration."

Skam's longest-serving artist returns with his second full length release for the Skam label. Prolific London-based musician Simon Pykes has been sampled by the likes of Howie B. and has appeared everywhere: Skam, Warp, Worm Interface, Language (on Electric Kingdom as Nudge), Law and Auder, Nonplace, Quatermass, Sub Rosa, etc. Freeform is a "non-linear" electronician, experimenting with and investigating every aspect of what electronic music is and should be. Pykes' releases flirt with ambient, electronica, techno, dub and industrial and have proven to be enduring records that helped to usher along the inception of IDM. This new album is a unique cocktail that sees Pykes more junk-funk infused and folky, developing the styles displayed on last years' summer-themed Wildcat EP.

Bola hails from Rochdale the same northern town as Gracie Fields and Autechre who, incidentally, introduced Darrell to the Skam label (Autechre that is, not Gracie). They also collaborated on another Skam project, Gescom, but where friends Autechre perhaps reflect the industrial heritage of Rochdale in their uncompromising compositions, Bola's sound is that of the surrounding hills, moors, streams, canals. Something more gentle and thoughtful (an interesting contradiction considering his studio's in the centre of town).

Gnayse is the third Bola album following on from Soup and Fyuti. We reckon it's the most complete -- one of those perfect albums with a beginning, middle and an end, 'Soup's a bit na�ve to say the least' explains Darrell of his earlier work. 'I hope people think I have gone forward, I might be going backwards'. This is the third full-length album from prolific Leeds-based producers Alex Peverett and Chris Gladwin. On the whole, it's a slightly more gentle and less bumpy journey when compared to 2004's Choose Your Own Adventure, a sentiment that is also reflected in the stunning hand-drawn illustrations by Oliver Redding that make up the album's cover artwork. Make no mistake, there are still plenty of bleeps, whirls, zaps and cartoon-busyness to satisfy any '80s glitch prankster -- but the tracks seem grounded with smooth, seamless rhythms for a nice, consistent listen. The fact that Alex and Chris now live on opposite sides of the world doesn't seem to be slowing their work rate down, if anything, the opposite is the case. 2007 could well be a busy year for Team Doyobi, and apparently, their fourth album is already almost in the bag, along with various other "conceptual projects." They are certainly keeping themselves, and Skam, very busy indeed.

Shapes is the fourth Bola album from Darrell Fitton following on from his now-classic, Gnayse. These tracks were first released as a triple 12" package shortly after Bola's first full length album Soup in 1999. The release was simply packaged with no artist or label credits, just a white shape on a black background on each of the labels. There were just over 300 copies released worldwide so, not surprisingly, it came and went quickly, and has become a release much sought after by the collectors. We always felt that the tracks deserved a wider audience so recently we blew the dust off the DAT tape, had the tracks remastered, added three bonus tracks for good measure, including two unreleased tracks written during the same period, and here's the result: the Shapes CD. Please note, we will not be releasing a version of this album on vinyl. This will be the only format available for this release.

The new official Bola full-length arrives after a long wait, following 2004's slick and calm Gnayse. Kroungrine is Bola's fourth proper studio full-length (or, the fifth, if you count 2006's Shapes), filling out the puzzling/thrilling stable of releases that also includes 1998's IDM classic, Soup and 2001's synthy and melodic Fyuti. What Kroungrine sounds like is anyone's guess, but it drops like chewy beef and overcooked roasties. It has a crunch and fullness that satisfies and leaves you feeling truly replenished and unable to move, except maybe for just playing again, using that just-barely reachable remote control. And by the way, Kroungrine refers to "crown green bowls," a variant of lawn bowls played in the north of England. The "crown" is a very slight mound in the middle of the green, making the game more difficult.

His synthesized tones sound entirely organic, accented at unexpected intervals with beats which are digital and satisfyingly crunchy, but still unobtrusive and perfectly balanced. Kroungrine is another masterful adventure from one of the UK's true electronic mavericks and testament to Bola's growth as both an artist and musician. Kroungrine refers to "crown green bowls," a variant of lawn bowls played in the north of England. The "crown" is a very slight mound in the middle of the green, making the game more difficult.

Using video tape as the primary sound source and '80s B-movies as his inspiration, this music is a collage of vocals, stuttering guitars and drum hits taken from a vast amount of ex-rental videos, teleporting the listener back to the golden era of the VHS format. Summons almost epileptic memory-recall of every single cheesy, synth-driven '80s-movie opening/ending credit sequence you've ever heard, spliced and mashed and cut together into one percussive, glitchy, retro mind-fuck. Skam proudly introduces Nuearz. Even though it's hardly to be believed, Nuearz is a solo project. He started composing music about 10 years ago, and the main feature of his music is twisted grooves and elements of various transformed music genres that lead listeners to a new sound-space. Skam presents a full-length album from Blackpool recording artist VHS Head. A collage of vocals, melodic splatters and stop/start rhythms grind against industrial soundscapes and atmospheric backdrops, while basslines and mutated guitar hooks grab the listener for a very enjoyable ride. The name Trademark Ribbons Of Gold was a reference to the pre-cert era of video tapes. A "pre-cert video" is any videotape issued in the UK before the introduction of the 1984 Video Recordings Act. Pre-cert videos were not required by law to be submitted to the BBFC so the era was unregulated, leading to many uncut releases of videos which would have fallen foul of the BBFC's strict guidelines. Some of the smaller independent companies decided to take advantage of this by issuing "strong uncut" versions depicting graphic violence and gore. A whole barrage of titles previously banned by the BBFC from getting a cinema release suddenly ended up uncensored on home video. This was the true golden era of home video.

Skam Records present an album from Sensational and Koyxen, recorded in Berlin, Osaka, Japan and Brooklyn, NY in 2009-2010. Sensational (formerly Torture) debuted in 1993 on Jungle Brothers' J. Beez Wit The Remedy, then busted out a strong solo with 1997's Loaded With Power, a maverick, lo-fi piece of speaker-wrecking bass, chest-caving beats, and gruff, marble-mouthed self-aggrandizement. Koyxen aka Kouhei Matsunaga grew up in Osaka, Japan listening to hardcore techno and rap and studying architecture. He started to make music back in 1992 focusing on the experimental. Kouhei has worked with artists such as Merzbow, Asmus Tietchens, Conrad Schnitzler, Autechre's Sean Booth and Mika Vainio (Pan Sonic), Max Turner and Paul PM (Puppetmastaz). In 2006, Koyxen and Sensational made Sensational Meets Kouhei on WordSound, and this album is meant to be volume 2 in this remarkable collaboration.

NHKyx is Kouhei Matsunaga's solo alias. The NHK project started in 2006 with Toshio Munehiro and debuted in 2008 on Raster Noton. Kouhei was born in Osaka, a musician and drawing artist. He started drawing during childhood under the influence of his grandfather. He grew up listening to hardcore-techno and hip-hop, studied architecture, and has been making music since 1992. At the end of his teenage years, his first album Upside Down was released by Mille Plateaux in 1998. His compositions have been released by record labels around the world. He has also had numerous collaborations with notable artists such as Merzbow, Autechre's Sean Booth, Mika Vainio, Conrad Schnitzler, Asmus Tietchens, Rashad Becker, the Puppetmastaz crew, Sleeparchive and Sensational. Featuring Google Premier (Max Turner from Puppetmastaz), Internet Magic (Kouhei Matsunaga) and female hip-hop/rap vocalist AthenA.

Massonix is a project by UK producer extraordinaire Graham Massey, and this release is a collection of tracks spanning ten years of sub-aquatic electronic keyboard portraitures. "Pioneer" and "originator" are terms that are massively overused these days, and there are very few people who can truly lay claim to the term without exaggeration. Massonix is one of those people. In the mid-1980s, while still recording with Biting Tongues (who recorded albums for Factory Records, amongst others), he started making music with Gerald Simpson and Martin Price under the name 808 State. He has been involved in production and remix work for artists such as Bj�rk, Art Of Noise, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Yes, Afrika Bambaataa, Primal Scream, UB40, The Future Sound of London, Robbie Williams, Gong, Blue Pearl, Goldfrapp, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Quincy Jones, David Bowie, Rolf Harris, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bomb the Bass and The Stone Roses. Until now, other than a 12" released in 1990, most of the stunning music that Graham has composed as Massonix has been for occasional live sets here and there, all of them for events run by or associated with Skam, including sets from the Shock City event that took place in Manchester Cathedral in 1998, the Warp 10th birthday lighthouse party in 2000, and Autechre's All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in 2003. Much of the music on this nautically-themed album comprises elements of rhythm and melody originally taken from these live sets, which have then been reworked and assembled into finished tracks. The results will make you delirious.
