Following on from Studio One Rockers, this second journey into the vaults of Studio One tells the story of the important link between American Funk and Soul and Jamaican Reggae. Ranging from music taken from the mid-1960s (and the arrival of rock steady) through to the beginning of the 1980's, Studio One Soul features versions of US Funk and Soul hits (many rarely heard before) from some of the many classic artists who recorded at Studio One. American Soul music has always been an important influence on Jamaican Reggae. The beginning of the Jamaican recording industry at the end of the 1950s started with Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd (owner of Studio One) and a group of select in-house musicians (originally The Skatalites) recording their own version of American R'n'B . Playing on the off-beat this music became ska and a new music was born. As American R'n'B progressed through Funk, Soul and Disco, Jamaican music was going through it's own musical changes from rock steady through to Reggae and Roots music. The house-band at Studio One known variously as The Skatalites, The Sound Dimension, The Soul Vendors, The Brentford All Stars and The Brentford Disco Set recorded on a daily basis behind all Studio One vocalists as well as recording instrumentally in their own right. These musicians are as important to the development of Jamaican music as were the equivalent musicians at Motown, Stax, Muscle Shoals and Philadelphia International in the US. Some of the main musicians were Jackie Mittoo (Keyboards), Pablove Black (Keyboards), Roland Alphonso (Sax), Lloyd Brevett(Bass), Leroy Sibbles(Bass), Johnny Moore (Trumpet), Lloyd Knibbs (Drums) and Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace(Drums). Soul singers such as Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions (Queen Of The Minstrels) had a profound influence on Jamaican artists and many other US artists were constantly re-interpreted and re-worked. Artists such as Aretha Franklin (Respect), Charles Wright (Express Yourself), King Floyd (Groove Me), Otis Redding (How Strong) were all very popular in Jamaica in the 1960s. At the end of the 1960s Black Consciousness became an important part of American Soul music. At the same time many Jamaican artists were starting to look to their roots. Many artists would shortly become involved in Rastafarianism. The 'conscious' lyrics of American Funk and Soul again struck a chord with Jamaican artists. 'Message From A Blackman' (originally by The Temptations), 'Is It Because I Am Black' (Syl Johnson) are examples of this. Through the 1970s Soul/Disco artists such Barry White ('Can't Get Enough' and 'Deeper and Deeper') and The Detroit Spinners ('I'll Be Around') became the flavor of the day. This CD finishes with Willie Williams interpretation of Macfadden & Whitehead's classic 'Ain't No Stopping Us Now'."

Kirk has now mixed contemporary electronic dance music with Jamaican reggae and dub styles on Sandoz In Dub-Chant To Jah. As a founding member of Cabaret Voltaire, Richard H. Kirk has been a pioneer of electronic music for more than twenty years embracing all the new developments in electronic dance music: In 1978 Cabaret Voltaire signed to a fledgling Rough Trade records releasing experimental electronic/post-punk classics such as 'Nag Nag Nag' and 'Do The Mussolini.' Ten years on and Cabaret Voltaire were sharing musical ideas with Chicago house pioneers such as Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy as well as their counterpart Detroit techno stars such as Derrick May and Ritchie Hawtin. With Sheffield's Warp Records acknowledging the debt that local group, Cabaret Voltaire, had played in defining electronic music, it was fitting that Richard H. 2008 repress. "The" definitive anthology of ACR recordings from 1978-85". Well-packaged per the Soul Jazz standard, with a 36-page booklet of historical photos and a long interview with the band. "A Certain Ratio were the first group (alongside Joy Division) to sign to Manchester's infamous Factory Records in 1978, future home of New Order, Happy Mondays. etc. As purveyors of dance music in the aftermath of punk, A Certain Ratio led the field. After punk, a new set of groups emerged who wanted to mix dance music -- funk, soul, reggae, disco with the spirit of punk: groups such as A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, 23 Skidoo and The Pop Group were the first UK groups to bring dance music into their sound. In New York's dance clubs, ACR's 'Shack Up' became an underground dance hit in places like Paradise Garage and The Roxy, leading to them playing live in New York's Danceteria with seminal New York group ESG and their first album being recorded in New Jersey mixed by legendary Factory producer, Martin Hannett. Here, ACR first encountered Nu Yorican Latin percussion/street music in Central Park. The following day, ACR bought bongoes, whistles and congas and didn't look back! Mixing punk, funk and Latin percussion together to make a unique sound, their sets often ended in ten-minute percussion jams, and they occasionally dressed in Brazilian football gear! When Factory opened their new nightclub, The Hacienda, ACR played at the opening night along with ESG. A Certain Ratio were a band ahead of their time, mixing dance music with punk spirit. When asked by Tony Wilson (founder of Factory) what ACR sounded like, style guru Peter York replied that they sounded 'Early.' 'Early what?' asked Wilson. 'No, just Early,' came the reply. "With Soul Jazz Records' first albums now reaching prices larger than the originals on e-bay, the label continues to release some of its seminal, most in-demand back-catalogue. Miami Sound features rare and classic funk and deep soul from Miami, Florida from 1968-74. The album features million-selling artists such as Gwen McRae, George McRae and Timmy Thomas alongside artists unknown outside of the Sunshine State such as James Knight and The Butlers, Frank Williams and The Rocketeers and All the People. Miami Funk, Soul and Disco was dominated by TK Records, founded by Henry Stone in the late 1960s. Through a myriad of associated record labels such as Alston, Blue Candle, Dash, Glades, Cat and more, TK Records made international artists out of Gwen McRae and her brother George McRae, Betty Wright and KC and The Sunshine Band in the mid-70s crossover period between Soul and Disco. The music on this compilation shows the roots of this Miami Sound. All the artists and musicians on this album continued to work together throughout the heyday of TK Records when it produced hit after hit. "Jackie Mittoo is one of the most important artists in the history of Jamaican music. As founding member of the legendary Skatalites, as in-house arranger/producer at the equally legendary Studio One and as a solo artist in his own right leading groups such as The Soul Brothers, Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors. The Soul Brothers recorded at Studio One between 1965-1967, the transitionary period between Ska and Rocksteady. Their music was a mixture of Jamaican Funk, Latin and Jazz sometimes with a reminder of Ska and the hint of Rocksteady. The previous era of Ska had been dominated by the Skatalites. The Skatalites were made up of Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett, Tommy McCook, Ernest Ranglin and Lester Sterling. Clement Dodd described the Soul Brothers mix of musical styles as Ska, Jump-Up and Soul sounds. As a regular visitor at David Mancuso's 'Loft', and Nicky Siano's 'Gallery' nightclubs and even Studio 54, Russell immersed himself in the New York Dance scene whilst continuing to create avant-garde experimental music. These two elements in his life and music make him truly unique. Larry Levan, Walter Gibbons and Francois Kervorkian all played pivotal roles as remixers of Russell's work and feature on many of the tracks featured here. Arthur Russell died in 1992 from AIDS leaving behind an enormous body of work. This release features both the classic tracks of Arthur Russell such as 'Go Bang', 'Is It All Over My Face', 'Wax The Van' etc alongside impossible-to-find collectors tracks such as 'In The Light Of The Miracle' and the private-pressing only 'Pop Your Funk'. "Studio One ska is the latest in Soul Jazz Records series of releases from the mighty Studio One Records. Studio One Records and it's in-house band The Skatalites defined ska music and made Jamaican music famous throughout the world. This compilation features classic vocal and instrumental tracks from The Skatalites, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson alongside super-rare tracks from the likes of Ken Boothe, The Maytals, Jackie Mittoo, Tommy McCook and many more. Independence came to Jamaica in 1962. The musical soundtrack to this era was the upbeat, energized ska, the first truly Jamaican music. ska music and Studio One are synonymous with each other. Whilst ska was only one style of Reggae that Coxsone Dodd and Studio One Records would release in it's forty year history -- with Rocksteady, Roots, Dancehall, Dub and much more still to come -- ska was the first and defined Jamaican music as having it's own identity throughout the world. The inspiration for the rhythm of ska came from the Southern US Rhythm and Blues records of the 1950s. Coxsone Dodd had initially encountered this music while working as a migrant farm worker in Florida. It was here that he first decided to start a Soundsystem on returning to Jamaica and began importing R'n'B records that would soon become the staple musical sound of any Kingston dance. The main R'n'B artists of the day were Roscoe Gordon, Wynonie Harris, Amos Milburn, Fats Domino, Louis Jordan. Listening back to these records it is possible to hear the roots of this new Jamaican sound.

Young artists such as The Wailers, The Ethiopians, The Maytals and Delroy Wilson all began their careers making joyous uptemposkaa at Studio One. The group that accompanied all these artists were The Skatalites. The Skatalites were Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso (tenor saxes), Lester Sterling (alto sax), Don Drummond (trombone), Johnny Moore (trumpet), Jackie Mittoo (piano), Jah Jerry (guitar), Lloyd Brevett (bass) and Lloyd Knibbs (drums). Whilstskaa music became easily identifiable by playing on the off-beat (usually the piano and guitar) The Skatalites brought their wide influences into the music.skaa could include Modal Jazz, Pop, Jump Up R'n'B, Rastafarian and Burro music, US Western and film soundtracks, Easy Listening and even classical music. Consequently this CD includes proto-Rastafarian music such as Don Drummond's 'Addis Ababa' alongside interpretations of UK mod songs (El President is based on Georgie Fame's 'Yeh Yeh').You will also find Latin-tinged tunes such as 'Don Cosmic', jump-up Gospelskaa from the Maytals, Eastern-flavoured modal instrumentals such as 'El Bang Bang' . The young singers who The Skatalites backed in turn also brought their own influences into the music. The youthful Rude Boy culture became the lyrical subject of manyskaa songs whether you were for them or against them. By 1965skaa music was over. The musical mood of the country was changing. Konk first featured on Soul Jazz Records' earlier New York Noise (which also featured Arthur Russell, ESG and Liquid Liquid) this album compiles all their rare and classic material. Konk were formed in New York in 1980. They played an important part in the link between New York's Disco scene (Paradise Garage/Loft/Gallery etc) and the New York No Wave/Post-Punk scene (Liquid Liquid, ESG, James White etc). This compilation brings together the classic Konk recordings in the 1980s from their releases on labels as diverse as Rough Trade, Sleeping Bag, 99 Records, Les Disques Du Crepuscle and Celluloid. Konk's pioneering interest in electronic and musical technology also put them at the forefront of the burgeoning worlds of Electro/Hip-Hop and House. Their use of DJ mixers (breaking down a track to it's individual elements) predated the arrival of samplers and enabled DJs such as Larry Levan to extend their mixes to up to 25 minutes. 2009 repress; triple LP version. "The Gallery, The Loft and The Paradise Garage were the three most important clubs in New York's underground Disco scene. The DJ Nicky Siano, whose club The Gallery ran from 1972-77, had the distinction of being connected to all three. He was also the DJ when the most celebrated of all clubs, Studio 54, opened it's doors -- playing as Bianca Jagger entered on a white horse. The Gallery ran to packed houses for five years. It ran alongside David Mancuso's Loft. Mancuso was a mentor of Siano -- who would later work at The Loft -- and encouraged the young DJ to open The Gallery. Siano was only 18 when the club first opened. Two of The Gallery's most celebrated regulars were Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan who, inspired by Nicky Siano, soon elevated themselves to working at The Gallery and eventually to DJing (Levan would also became Siano's lover). From here Frankie Knuckles went on to open Chicago's infamous Warehouse and Larry Levan opened The Paradise Garage. The Gallery became a stepping stone for many future stars -- Grace Jones made her debut at the legendary club -- and Nicky Siano became the first DJ to obtain star status. He was also the first DJ to mix records together, which brought him a growing crowd of musical admirers and future DJs. In 1978 Siano turned his hand from DJing to making music. Along with a young Arthur Russell, another regular at the Gallery, he formed Dinosaur and released the groundbreaking Kiss Me Again on Sire Records. The record featured David Byrne on guitar, who himself would shortly go on to form Talking Heads. By the end of 1978 Siano's prodigious drug habit had caught up with him. He closed The Gallery and was eventually sacked from Studio 54 after playing the whole of Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express! Siano left the music world, de-toxed and then in the 1980s devoted his time to working with the Aids community in New York. Twenty-five years on and Soul Jazz Records are releasing The Gallery." Both albums blend electronic experimentation within the frame-work of Steve Reid's musical heritage. Steve Reid is a true pioneer of boundary-breaking music. This latest project/collaboration is a continuation of a musical path that stretches back to the late 1960s. A self-taught master jazz drummer Steve Reid played in Sun Ra's Arkestra as well as being a session musician at both Motown Records (he plays on for instance Martha and The Vandella's 'Heatwave') and in James Brown's in-house band at the legendary Harlem Apollo. In the mid-'60s Reid went to West Africa, playing and learning the music of Ghana, Nigeria (playing with Fela Kuti), Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal. In 1968 as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam war he was sentenced to 4 years in prison where he then taught a Black history course to his fellow inmates. In the 1970s Reid formed the Legendary Master Brotherhood as well as running his own record company, Mustevic Sound, which released a series of his albums (2 of which have earlier been released by Soul Jazz Records). In a career now spanning over 40 years Steve Reid has worked with artists such as Lester Bowie, Miles Davis, Charles Tyler, Arthur Blythe, Ornette Coleman, Gary Bartz, Chief Bey, Archie Shepp, Sam Rivers, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Leon Thomas and more. Kirk founded the group Cabaret Voltaire in Sheffield in 1973 alongside Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson. One of the earliest signings to Rough Trade records, the group created a unique industrial sound that perfectly fit into the post-punk ethos of the late 1970s. The name of the group was taken from a meeting of Dadaist artists in Zurich, Switzerland in 1910. "Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is a 140-year old institution in Cuba. The music of Tumba Francesa is a unique combination of African drums and French patois vocals alive in Cuba today. Originally mutual aid societies for the ex-slaves who fled the neighbouring Haitian Revolution, Tumba Francesas would put on elaborate shows during carnival dressed in ballroom costumes of 18th century France playing purely African music. The music of Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is at once both modern and traditional, both an important aspect of contemporary Cuba and coming with a vast cultural legacy. ...The Rise of the Independent Music Industry After Punk. "Do It Yourself charts the rise of the independent music industry after punk -- from the hundreds of bands and tiny labels that sprung up with like-minded ideals, to the network of shops, manufacturers, studios, printers etc, all connected via a loose network of record distributors that would help define independent music over the following thirty years. Beginning with The Buzzcocks' Spiral Scratch EP released in early 1977, on the newly formed New Hormones label, in Manchester, it soon seemed that every town in Britain had its own music scene complete with bands, small labels, record shops and studios. Directly influenced by the ideals of punk -- self-determination, freedom of expression, etc -- as much as the music meant that these bands were interested in alternatives to the status quo in managing their careers. This meant finding new ways of getting their music heard outside of the mainstream music industry. It also meant new ways of making music away from the traditional guitar, bass, drums and vocals line-up of rock bands. The reasons for these two factors would be sometimes practical (they couldn't get signed/they couldn't play) and sometimes ideological. Pivotal to the development of the scene was the Rough Trade Records shop run by music fan Geoff Travis."

Geoff Travis: 'The first records I remember bands bringing into the shop were The Buzzcocks' Spiral Scratch, Scritti Politti Skank Bloc Bologna and The Desperate Bicycles.' Rough Trade Records had started as a second-hand record shop. In 1977 customers began to bring their own newly pressed-up records into the shop, Travis soon began distributing the records to a handful of like-minded shops throughout the country. This developed into a network and bands soon found they could sell 1000s of their own records with no marketing, management, agents etc. At first, the records were all coming from people bringing in music to Rough Trade in London, but soon new bands would turn up at their local store with their locally-pressed record and this led to the emergence of a music scene in each town. All the bands on this record released their music independently, either themselves or on a small label. Some went on to be incredibly famous and others didn't. This record celebrates all factions and discusses the social and economic conditions that allowed independent music to thrive in the years to follow up to the present day. It comes complete with interviews with label owners, bands, studios, mastering and pressing plants and even printers!" "In the early 1990s, jungle was on the rise in the UK. After initially emerging out of the post-rave scene, jungle quickly evolved, and by 1993 was now drawing on the slow, heavy bass-lines and ragga vocals of Jamaican music. Born in Zurich in 1975, his super-funky minimal discofied electronic dance music has been appearing sporadically on Soul Jazz Records since 2003 and on his own minimal electronic label, Dreck Records since 2000, where he also releases the music of artists such as AM/PM, Antonelli and Strategy. His most recent appearance was on the Soul Jazz Singles CD alongside Rekid (aka Radio Slave and one half of Quiet Village), Kode9, Subway, DJ Rupture and other similarly like-minded electronic pioneers. Secondo's love of disco and minimal European electronic music produces a unique funky-electronic cut-up style that shows his close links with the micro-house sound of Germany's Kompakt label as much as that of the New York disco labels of the late '70s and early '80s. This led to earlier releases such as his celebrated Tom Tom Club cut-up a few years back. As well as his own releases he has done numerous collaborations such as Closer Musik (with Dirk Leyers), Zimt (with Michael Mayer) and Broke (with Marcus Rosskecht). Born in Peru, Aguayo moved to Cologne where he became deeply involved in the electronic club scene, working closely with Kompakt records. He currently lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina and travels the world DJing. In 2005 he released the album Are You Really Lost on Kompakt and began a creative partnership with Marcus Rosskecht who also mixed these tracks."
