Title: Ghana Soundz: Afro-Beat, Funk and Fusion in 70's Ghana
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 001CD
Soundway has been on sabbatical for a while, but has started to repress key titles from their catalog, starting w/ this first release from 2004... "Soundway is a new label that aims to explore lost and obscure original Jazz, Funk, Afro and Latin recordings from around the world. Ghana Soundz is a painstakingly assembled collection of Afro-beat and Afro Funk, most of which has never been released outside of Africa and some of which is unreleased anywhere. This is the first of three planned volumes. The recent interest in Afro music has influenced a number of musicians from Damon Albarn to Masters At Work. This album will interest anyone with a love of funky global sounds, especially those who bought the recent Fela Kuti reissues. This package will also appeal to collectors as it includes a full 16 page booklet highlighting the history of the Ghana recording industry and reproductions of original LP sleeves which normally fetch massive prices." 2002 release and a modern classic.

Title: Afro Baby The Evolution of the Afro Sound in Nigeria 1970-79
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 002CD
2009 repress, first released in 2004. "Nigeria in the 1970s had one the biggest recording industries on the continent as well as one of the most diverse. The fusion of African rhythms and culture with jazz, funk, soul, and rock was an Africa-wide phenomenon but nowhere was it more prolific and active than the cities and dancefloors of Nigeria. These twelve rarities highlight how the Afro-sound influenced all areas of the music scene and how it progressed throughout a very creative and energetic decade. From funky afro-jazz, soul and afro-highlife to big, dancefloor afro-beat Nigeria led the way in West Africa at the time. Following the success of the Ghana Soundz album released last year on Soundway we have diverted our attention to highlighting the Scene in Nigeria during the seventies. This album features only tracks that have never been released outside of Nigeria -- and many of them were small underground releases there at the time appearing only on long deleted albums or 45's. All have been lovingly tracked down, licensed and re-mastered. The worldwide interest in Afro-beat and Afro-Funk continues and here we have gathered together a collection of some of the best examples of Funky music from Nigeria. "

Title: Ghana Soundz: Afro-Beat. Funk & Fusion in 70's Ghana Vol. 2
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 003CD
2009 repress. Volume 2, from 2004! "Afro-music continues to inspire a number of musicians, producers and DJs around the globe. Ghana Soundz Volume 2 does just that by properly representing Afro-music from the 1970s. Ghana Soundz was an idea created by compiler and DJ Miles Cleret 3 years ago. Since then he has traveled throughout Ghana to assemble three collections of rare Afro-beat, Afro-funk and Afro-fusion, most of which were unreleased outside of Africa and quite a few have never been released in the world. The series forms a unique window on a scene previously unknown outside of Ghana until Volume One was released in 2002. Pounding rhythms, blaring horns and pumping vocals -- the music is a document of a time forgotten when flares and Cuban heels strutted the streets and night-spots of Accra, the sizzling hot and humid capital of Ghana. Influenced as much by traditional rhythms and local highlife as by the music of Fela Kuti, James Brown and Santana, these tunes had almost been lost -- until now."

Last copies of this early 12", originally released by Soundway in 2005. A long-lost slice of percussive Afro-Latin madness! Jorge Graf was a Uruguayan percussionist and drummer who worked as a session musician in Germany and Italy in the '70s. He returned to Uruguay in 1980 with uncompleted tapes of a project combining European boogie, funk and jazz with heavy candombe rhythms. Out of these tapes came an extended mix of bone-shaking Latin percussion, tight funk-bass and jazzy saxophone with a modern re-interpretation by Gerardo Frisina.

Title: Panama! Latin, Calypso and Funk on the Isthmus 1965-75
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 007CD
2009 repress, originally released 2006. Heavy tropical sounds from the Isthmus! Panama played host to many musicians from across the Caribbean to South America, laying down some of the best Latin, funk and calypso ever recorded -- long forgotten and unrepresented until now! Soundway continues its mission to expose the best in funk, Latin and Afro music from Africa, the Caribbean and South America by introducing the likes of the The Exciters, Victor Boa and Lord Cobra once again, giving them the exposure and recognition they deserve. Panama occupies a unique place both geographically and culturally within Central America and the Caribbean. The clubs and bars of Panama City and Colon would vibrate to sounds imported from Colombia, Jamaica, Trinidad, New Orleans, Miami and the Caribbean, all given the special Panamanian dressing. We have dug deep to present a broad range of styles that run parallel to the development of soul and funk music in the US and the nascent salsa sound emerging from Miami, Cali and Baranquilla. The album covers heavy Latin descargas, raw calypsos, deep funk sounds and Caribbean soul -- all unavailable since they were first issued in tiny numbers thirty years ago! All tracks have been carefully licensed and re-mastered and sound as vibrant and relevant today as the day they were released. This album represents an important departure for Soundway as their first full-length collection of music from outside the African continent. It is a continuation of their aims to expose overlooked styles and sounds from different parts of the world and bring together the disparate strands that make up the rhythms of African, Latin and Caribbean music. Both CD and double gatefold vinyl come packed with in-depth liner notes, original cover scans and contemporary photos.

Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: SNDW 010CD
...The Sound of the Underground Lagos Dancefloor 1974-79. 2009 repress. Lagos, Nigeria, 1974-1979: the funk & disco capital of West Africa. More nightclubs, bars, spots and dancefloors than any place along the coast from Dakar all the way to Kinshasa. Nigeria Disco Funk Special is an amazing collection of heavy dancefloor grooves from urban Lagos in the '70s -- hot and driving slices of funk, disco and boogie that show just how vibrant the music scene was in one of West Africa's most populous and culturally diverse cities. In the '70s, it wasn't just James Brown who influenced the musicians playing in the nightspots of Lagos -- the loose-structured and elongated jams that he was pioneering in America had been a part of Nigerian music much longer than that. This album is the sound of Cuban-heeled and micro-minied Lagos youth soaking up the sound of the American discotheque and putting their own inimitable twist on the proceedings. The CD and double gatefold vinyl include rare tracks from famous musicians like Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies and Mono Mono's Joni Haastrup, as well as selections from cult bands like Asiko Rock Group, SJOB Movement and Jay-U Experience. Other artists include: The Sahara All Stars, T-Fire, Voices Of Darkness and Dr. Adolf Aonotu.

...Psychedelic Afro-Rock & Fuzz Funk in 1970s Nigeria. 2010 repress. Nigeria Rock Special shines a light on the flipside of the well-documented sounds of highlife and Afrobeat coming out of Nigeria in the 1970s -- young bands caught up in the wave of psychedelic and progressive rock that was sweeping Europe and the States in the late '60s and early '70s. As time goes by, the many layers of musical output that formed around the world throughout the 1960s and '70s continues to be peeled back to reveal many welcome surprises. The explosion of rock n' roll that erupted out of the USA in the '50s fanned out around the globe from its epicenter and by the mid-1960s, kids all over the world were picking up guitars and checking themselves in mirrors. Nigeria was no exception. Spurred on by Cream drummer Ginger Baker's visits to Lagos and his band Airforce (featuring many Nigerian musicians), the sound of fuzzed-out rock reverberated around the universities and nightspots of Lagos and Ibadan. The craze that followed hit the youth and student population of Nigeria hard -- mixing fuzz guitar and heavy African rhythms with elements of Led Zeppelin, Traffic and The Chambers Brothers. Fifteen of the best cuts from the scene are available here for the first time in 30 years. Artists include: Ofege, The Action 13, The Hygrades, The Wings, Ofo The Black Company, The Elcados, Mono Mono, Tabukah "X", The Funkees, Colomach, Joe King Kologbo & His Black Sound, Question Mark, Original Wings, Tunji Oyelana and BLO.

Title: Guitar Boy Superstar 1970-76
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: SNDW 012CD
Guitar-Boy Superstar is the first survey of the long career of the legendary Nigerian musician, artist and poet Victor Uwaifo, one of Nigeria's greatest stars -- a long-overdue release that puts Victor Uwaifo next to other Nigerian greats better known in the West. Victor Uwaifo's mission to spread and preserve the cultural heritage of ancient Benin (Modern day Edo State, Nigeria) has seen him work as a commissioner for cultural affairs in his native Edo State, a University lecturer, acclaimed bronze sculptor and poet as well as a highly successful musician. He has been awarded Nigeria's highest cultural tribute -- the order of the Niger, and continues to teach and work today with an energy that has not abated for nearly fifty years. Cutting his musical teeth with Victor Olaiya ("the evil genius of highlife") in the early '60s, he went on to form his own band The Melody Maestros, producing Nigeria's biggest-ever selling record with Joromi in 1965, for which he was awarded Africa's first gold disc. He has continued to produce some of the most popular and engaging music in Nigeria ever since. This album focuses on his early 1970s musical output. Uwaifo invented a unique style of highlife music that he called ekassa -- based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation and just a dash of rock and soul.

Title: Panama!2 - Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical & Calypso Funk..
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 013CD
..On The Isthmus, 1967-77. Soundway presents the second volume in their Panama! series, showcasing the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Panama is one of the world's great crossroads -- a bridge between North and South America, and home to the great canal that links the Caribbean and the Pacific. The canal itself was built by a huge workforce from all over the Caribbean and South America, each nationality bringing a taste of their culture and music to make up the hugely diverse nation that exists today. After soaking up the varied influences of Panama's diverse population, the dancefloors and bars spat out a heady mix that took in the raw vallenato of neighboring Colombia, the soul and funk of America, the calypso of Trinidad and the son and rumba of Cuba, all combined and re-styled in a uniquely Panamanian fashion, making Panama a central spoke in the wheel of Caribbean music. Writer and compiler Roberto Ernesto Gyemant travelled throughout the country in search of elusive records and reclusive musicians, tracking down hopeful tips and half-remembered names and addresses. Two years of digging through dusty warehouses and old radio stations in search of crackly records and dusty photos led to an exhaustive look at the musical culture of this fascinating country. If you think salsa is the sum total of Latin American music, then think again -- the hot sound of Panamanian musica tipica and calypso Español throws everything into the mix for a non-stop journey through Afro rhythms, carnival sounds, tipica soul and cumbia madness! Listen to the heavy tamborito rhythm of Los Silvertones and you'll hear where the instantly-recognizable, syncopated beat of modern-day reggaeton was born. Check the countrified re-versioning of Willie Colon's classic "La Murga" -- a perfect riposte to those that think Latin music begins and ends with Shakira. Listen to "La Escoba" by Alfredo y Su Salsa Montañera, and see that the currently in-vogue sound of cumbia owes as much to Panama as it does Colombia. As is the case with all Soundway albums, Panama!2 includes a full-color, 24-page booklet with nuggets of vital information, untold stories behind the music, vintage photos and some very special cover art. Sure to be one of the sure-fire summer soundtracks of the year!

Title: The Kusum Beat
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: SNDW 014CD
Sweet Talks were undoubtedly amongst the top five biggest bands in Ghana in the 1970s, recording a string of hit albums. The Kusum Beat was originally released in 1974 and became somewhat of a household favorite with heavy emphasis on the "Afro" through its traditional rhythms and motifs, blended together into a modern mix that combined highlife, funk and Afrobeat. Like a small handful of seminal Ghanaian albums, The Kusum Beat has stood the test of time and sounds as original and unique today as it did back in 1974, thus original pressings are in high demand and can be found on record exchanges for significant prices. This was the second album from the band who were formerly known as El Dorados, later to change their name to Medican Lantcis before settling on Sweet Talks, having moved to a live residency at the legendary Talk of the Town nightclub in the port town of Tema, just outside the capital of Ghana-Accra. It is here that they established a name for themselves as one of the most exciting young bands in the country. Due to the popularity and commercial success of their first three albums -- Adam & Eve, The Kusum Beat and Spiritual Ghana -- the band began touring on a regular basis and made it as far as Los Angeles and here they went on to record what was to be their biggest-selling record, the Hollywood Highlife Party LP as well as some straight disco recordings aimed squarely at the burgeoning American market. The Kusum Beat is far from typical of their trademark sound but shows just how versatile an outfit they were -- able to turn their hands to any one of a number of styles. It's a great reminder of how open-minded, experimental and curious the music scene in Ghana was back in the first half of the 1970s.

...1968-81. Ghana in the 1970s: highlife, rock, and soul collide and merge with tradition and culture. New styles meet old styles. A new generation renews old musical customs. New fashions meet old fashions, creating new fusions. Soundway presents 33 original and previously un-reissued tracks from the time: obscure A-sides, B-sides and album cuts that have resisted a second look until now. Compiler and label boss Miles Cleret travelled many times to Ghana to track down these long-lost and unavailable recordings. Ghana Special focuses on a variety of the vast number of diverse musical styles made in Ghana at that time -- a selection of 33 tracks hand-picked from a multitude uncovered over nearly 10 years of on-going research: driving around the cities of Ghana, banging on musician's doors, visiting distributors, DJs, collectors, manufacturers and shop owners. The roots of this project go back to a pair of albums named Ghana Soundz (Volumes 1 and 2), which focused solely on the "funkier" side of the same period. Alongside new artists and groups, some other works of the many musicians and producers Cleret met while researching those records are also included here. Many of these tracks have remained only in people's memories or in collections of LPs that sit unplayed: until now, of course. This 2CD hardback package comes with a full-color 44-page booklet, including many original photographs, LP scans and a full history of the period -- painstakingly pieced together over many years.

...From The French Caribbean, 1963-74. Often overlooked in the English-speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and soaring clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the 1960s. This album showcases the vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the '60s and '70s -- a scene that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the '80s. Uptown bands like Ensemble La Perfecta and Les Loups Noirs combine heavy rhythms and psychedelic effects in an inimitable style -- check out the crazed "Jet Biguine" for a better idea! The deep and introspective sounds of Monsieur Dolor and Guadeloupean hero Robert Loison show the deep African roots of the music -- songs born out of the plantations, with an insistent rhythm and mournful vocals that are unique to these islands. Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal and the French Caribbean for many years, this collection redresses the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and Guadeloupe -- missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the Caribbean. CD includes a 24-page booklet with detailed historical notes and rare photos.

...& Cumbia Típica On The Isthmus 1960-75. After two very successful and well-received previous volumes of tropical rarities from Panama, co-compilers Roberto Gyemant and Miles Cleret are joined by Will "Quantic" Holland for the final piece of this unique series. Volume 3 showcases more of the unique tropical music created in Panama in the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Panama is the thin, tropical bridge that connects North and South America, and is home to three million culturally-diverse people; its music is a soulful blend of Latin American, Caribbean, European and indigenous forms. From bilingual calypsos to guajira jazz, from tropical guarachas to cumbia tamboreras, Panamanian musicians fearlessly combined and brilliantly executed styles that reflected their multicultural environment during a turbulent time in the young country's history. This collection presents more of the golden age of Panamanian music and the music of the combos nacionales on rare recordings that have never been released outside the isthmus until now.

Hedzoleh Soundz were one of the first and most original "Afro" bands from 1970s Ghana, playing a mix of traditional music from across the country tinged with Western rock. They were residents at the notorious Napoleon nightclub where they met South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela in late 1973. The music for Hedzoleh was recorded just months before the band met Masekela to become the backbone of (and sadly over-shadowed by) the Afro-jazz classic LP Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz. Hedzoleh (meaning "freedom") emerged at the beginning of a decade that saw great changes in the West African music scene. At that time, the sight of a band playing music at clubs in the city (as opposed to the countryside), dressed in traditional costumes was fairly radical and typified the new feeling for Afrocentric roots and culture which was gaining popularity amongst the youth of the day. The self-titled LP Hedzoleh has since vanished from public domain despite the success of their collaboration with Hugh Masekela. The original trumpet-less sound of this record hasn't had a chance to be heard for nearly 40 years... until now.

Catalog #: SNDW 020CD
...& Nigerian Blues 1970-6. The Soundway label presents a second volume in their Nigeria Special series. This volume features tracks that have been forgotten or out of print for nearly 35 years, but have since been tracked down and documented by Miles Cleret. The fruits of this arduous labor has taken over 10 years of dedication, research and travel to Nigeria, now culminating in the final part of Soundway's extensive survey of Nigeria's forgotten musical history. The range of styles on Nigeria Special Volume 2 vary from highlife to Juju and Nigerian blues in the languages of Yoruba, Igbo, Bini and Ijaw. With a peppering of "Afro" experimentation, the same musical stew pervades volume 2 as its predecessor -- some artists appear again alongside some new artists as the emphasis continues to focus on the laid-back and mid-tempo feel found on volume 1. It includes the bluesy guitar band style of The Otarus and The Peacocks International Guitar Band, sitting opposite the more uptempo sound of highlife legends Stephen Osita Osadebe (here bringing his Igbo version of the Cuban standard "Peanut Vendor") and Paulson Kalu. Progressive outfits Black Zenith's', The Don Isaac Ezekiel Combination, Tunji Oyelana, The Nkengas, Opotopo and Joy Nwoso remind us that these were indeed experimental times with their fusions of jazz, highlife and in the case of Nwoso, opera! Title: Nigeria Afrobeat Special: The New Explosive Sound
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 021CD
...In 1970s Nigeria. This is the fourth addition to the Nigeria Special series, a project initiated in 2004 by Miles Cleret, owner of the Soundway record label. Focusing on the big-band sound dominated by wailing saxophones, brass solos and relentless poly-rhythmic grooves, Nigeria Afrobeat Special delivers a no-nonsense collection of tracks that (bar one) have NEVER been re-issued outside of Nigeria. It was Fela Kuti and his musical and political ideals that formed the core of Afrobeat's message. Fela's highly sought-after version of "Who're You?" lends this set its lead. Originally released on 7" in 1971, it would later be re-recorded at Abbey Road for his album Fela's London Scene and is re-issued here for the first time ever. The collection features Fela's rival and fellow Afrobeat veteran Orlando Julius, represented by the track "Afro-Blues" -- amazing that this has previously managed to escape re-issue. Also featured are tracks by big names on the Nigerian scene -- Eric Akaeze, Bongos Ikwue and Segun Bucknor as well as a Victor Uwaifo-produced cut by previously unknown artist Andrew "Madman" Jaga. The album also features a cut featuring Pax Nicholas, a singer whose album Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef has recently been made available after 30 years. Cleret's ambition to distinguish the blossoming music scenes of 1970s Nigeria has lent to an indispensable series of CD and LP compilations documenting the influence of western blues, rock and disco amongst artists and musicians versed in the local musical styles of highlife and juju.

Title: Palenque Palenque: Champeta Criolla & Afro Roots in Colombia
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 022CD
...1975-91. Boasting 21 pulsating tracks drawn from the northern coasts of Colombia, Palenque Palenque reveals a unique and fascinating story of how Afro Colombian music developed from the 1970s onwards and how the local sound-systems in Cartagena and Barranquilla played such an important role in shaping the sound of the Colombian champeta. Co-compiled by Lucas Silva (resident of Bogota and owner of Palenque Records) and Soundway Records' Miles Cleret, the album highlights the long relationship that the Caribbean coast of Colombia has with Africa stretching back to the 17th century -- specifically, the rise of the percussion-heavy champeta sound, born out of a wave of popularity for psychedelic Afro, Latin & Caribbean music inspired by the DJs of the time. The influence of the sound-systems spread to local artists as well as re-energizing traditional African folk songs and rhythms that had survived since the days of slavery. Record labels recognized the major change in direction from the days when cumbia and porro ruled the hearts of the ghettos and began employing bands that began experimenting and tapping into these new cultural and musical movements. Around 1981, several groups were recording Afrobeat in Baranquilla including Abelardo Carbonó who features with his ode, "Quiero A Mi Gente." A true proponent of the avant-garde, he can still be heard playing in Anibal Velasquez's orchestra. Son Palenque were considered pioneers of the crossover sound of Africa and the Caribbean and are featured three times including the title-track of this album. Fela Kuti's "Shakara" is reworked by Lisandro Meza entitled "Shacalao," while Fela's influence is further felt through Wganda Kenya's contributions, especially on the shuffling cut that is "Pim Pom." Soundway have unearthed a magical era, exposed a radical movement and have, in the process, found some of the world's most eccentric and highly addictive modern dance music. Housed in a CD digipack with a 36-page booklet with in-depth liner notes.

Soundway Records and Tummy Touch are proud to present Dawn Of Awareness, the second album by Joni Haastrup's band MonoMono. Amid the OPEC oil embargo, Watergate and IRA bombs, the sound of MonoMono's follow-up record, 1974's Dawn Of Awareness, took on the blues rock grooves of Santana and Hugh Masekela, but with their own unique Yoruban flavor. A deeply spiritual record, Dawn Of Awareness was Haastrup's reaction to what was going on in the world around him. One hears echoes of the Allman Brothers' "Revival" on MonoMono's "Awareness is What You Need" and after listening to "Plain Fighting" you could easily imagine the band sharing the stage with the Doobie Brothers at an East Side San Jose street festival. Title: The Original Sound Of Cumbia Vol. 1
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: 3LP
Price: $31.00
Catalog #: SNDW 032A-LP
Subtitled: The History of Colombian Cumbia & Porro As Told By The Phonograph 1948-79. Limited 180 gram triple vinyl version, part 1 (Original Colombian 78s). Includes vinyl-only bonus track (Angel Martinez con Los Sabaneros' "Cumbia Alegre"). Soundway set sail for Colombia once again, delving deeper into the South American country's rich musical past. The Original Sound Of Cumbia is Soundway's definitive guide to the origins of Colombian cumbia and porro and the result of five years' painstaking research by Will "Quantic" Holland. Greats of Colombian music like Alberto Pacheco, Toño Fernandez and Anibal Velasquez brought the genre forward, bringing new influences and instruments to the genre. What had once been considered the music of the underclasses had risen up as the new sound of a nation. After five years of becoming slowly submerged in Colombian musical culture, learning the accordion, setting up a band and a studio, and scouring the country in search of its recorded legacy, Will "Quantic" Holland (Quantic Soul Orchestra & Quantic Y Su Combo Barbaro) has compiled the fruits of his labor into this unique compilation that tells the story of cumbia in the years of the phonograph record's supremacy. A large-format 8-page booklet features detailed liner notes and original artist pictures and sleeves. Includes mp3 download code.

Catalog #: SNDW 032CD
Subtitled: The History of Colombian Cumbia & Porro As Told By The Phonograph 1948-79. Soundway set sail for Colombia once again, delving deeper into the South American country's rich musical past. Fifty-five tracks spread over two CDs, The Original Sound Of Cumbia is Soundway's definitive guide to the origins of Colombian cumbia and porro and the result of five years' painstaking research by Will "Quantic" Holland. Disc 1 tells the story of some of the earliest Colombian cumbia recorded, a genre that captured a nation, spreading from its birthplace on the Caribbean coast inland to central Colombia and the capital Bogata. Disc 2 sees the evolution of cumbia. Along with good friend and head of Soundway Records, Miles Cleret, Will Holland has condensed hundreds of 78s, 45s and LPs into just over two and a half hours of the finest Colombian cumbia. Includes a 40-page booklet with detailed liner notes and original artist pictures and sleeves.

Soundway return once more to the Caribbean and are proud to present Ifetayo by Black Truth Rhythm Band, originally released in 1976. Led by the charismatic Oluko Imo, Ifetayo was the only release from the Afro-centric Trinidadian band and is re-issued here for the first time on CD and vinyl. Whereas most of their peers were taking inspiration from U.S. funk and soul artists such as James Brown, Black Truth Rhythm Band looked to Africa, fusing rhythms from Africa and the West Indies with elements of jazz, funk, calypso and soul. In 1975, band leader Imo took his musicians into the studio to record the album Ifetayo. Imo played bass, kalimba, conga, flute and percussion as well as lead vocals. The album was released the following year in 1976 and despite being released in the U.S., remained an underground, albeit unique and forward-thinking record that has remained out-of-print for years now. Ifetayo was to be the only release from Black Truth Rhythm Band, but Imo continued his music and love of African rhythms, going onto record with Fela Kuti in 1988 and later on perform with members of Fela's Egypt 80 band. Re-issued here for the first time, the CD edition comes with an exclusive bonus track.

Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 035CD
Digging deeper into the 1970s Nigerian rock scene, Soundway are excited to announce the release of Edzayawa's first and only LP Projection One. Originally released in 1973 by EMI Nigeria, Projection One came out at a time when Osibisa and Fela's influence was being felt across West Africa, and was the young Ghanaians' band attempt at creating something unique and distinctly African. Re-issued here on CD for the first time outside of Nigeria, the album sounds as exciting and unrivaled today as it did 35 years ago. Writing songs with a heavy rock influence but also a distinctly African feel, Edzayawa wrote dark and deeply philosophical tracks with strong traditional themes far removed from the sweet love songs many of their contemporaries were writing. The majority of their songs were based around a 6/8 rhythm, influenced by the Ewe people originating in the South East of Ghana. With their new repertoire, they headed off to Lagos, Nigeria with hardly any money in their pockets and no instruments. They headed straight to Tommy Benson's club, son of the legendary Nigerian entertainer and musician Bobby Benson, and got a gig playing at The Caban Bamboo in return for one hotel room between the four of them. Constantly searching for an adventure, they headed to Fela Kuti's Kalakuta Republic. After waiting two hours for an audience with Fela, they were led through to meet him. There they had a long talk with Fela and eventually got asked to play at The Shrine. At the time Joni Haastrup's MonoMono were playing at The Shrine, too, coming on after Edzayawa and before Fela's Africa 70. It was during this time the band recorded Projection One in EMI Studio Lagos. Recorded over two days, the album was to be their only release. Projection One never got a release in their home country of Ghana -- the only copies that made it into the country were the few that the band took back themselves. Soundway release Projection One remastered and accompanied by liner notes that contain the reminiscences of band leader Nana Danso (who subsequently founded and now runs the Accra-based Pan African Orchestra).

Title: Los Miticos Del Ritmo
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 036CD
From the sweltering tropical depths of Cali, Colombia, Will "Quantic" Holland's studio band Los Miticos Del Ritmo (trans. "The Mythics Of Rhythm") return with an album of hip-shaking, dancefloor-quaking instrumental cumbias. Assembled using vallenato and cumbia musicians living in Cali, Los Miticos Del Ritmo are a 7-piece studio band put together by British musician, producer and now Colombian resident Will "Quantic" Holland. Covers of Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust," Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop" and Gildardo Montoya's "Fabiola" (as featured on Soundway's The Original Sound Of Cumbia) sit alongside original cumbias on this feel-good, house party cumbia album. Recorded in Will's home studio in Cali, his approach was to produce an album with the aesthetics of 1960s tropical recordings made in Colombia and the Caribbean. Careful attention was made to preserve the analog quality of the recording at every stage. "The idea of the record was to record something that sounded like a lost cumbia classic," said Will in a recent interview with Soundway, "like something dug out of a Barranquilla basement after decades of humidity and dust."

Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 038CD
Soundway are proud to release the debut album from Batida, the brainchild of Angolan/Portuguese DJ Mpula aka Pedro Coquenão. A distinctly modern and vibrant project with its feet firmly rooted in the past, Batida combine samples from old 1970s Angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. Music is the starting point but through dance, graphics, photography, radio and video, Batida expands, taking in politics and social commentary but always bringing it back to the party. Being the first of a string of brand new projects, this eponymous first album sees Soundway taking a slightly different direction in 2012 and beyond. Championed mostly for their work in un-earthing and re-releasing classic, rare and vintage tropical recordings, Soundway have started signing new acts that have drawn on and been inspired by the kind of music found on the label's groundbreaking compilations and re-issues. What originally started out as a radio show designed to promote new African music has slowly evolved into a collaborative project crossing continents. Whereas nearly all of kuduro (Angolan electronic music) has no links with its country's musical heritage, it is deeply engrained in Batida's music. Sampling tracks from 1970s Angola, Batida is a reinterpretation of Angola's musical past, bringing it firmly into the modern day. Batida's high energy live show features dancers, percussionists, DJs, MCs alongside visuals and images (both archive and new) of Angolan streets, war and fragments of tribal life. CD version features bonus track "Tribalismo." Featuring MCK, Circuito Feixado, Ikonoklasta, Beat Laden, Quem Me Rusgou, Ngongo and Bob da Rage Sense.

Dancing Time: The Best Of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973-77 by The Funkees is the latest title on Soundway to mine the rich musical output of '60s and '70s Nigeria. For the 5-year period this compilation spans, The Funkees' output crackled with dancefloor fire. Having featured on three of Soundway's most popular titles, across the definitive Nigeria Special compilation series, Soundway felt The Funkees' output deserved closer inspection. Presented here are 18 slices of funky Afro-rock grooves, hand-picked by Soundway's Miles Cleret from a selection of the band's 45s and two full-lengths. In the early 1970s, The Funkees were the #1 east Nigerian band and the only outfit to seriously challenge the popular Lagos-based rock combos MonoMono and BLO. It wasn't long before promoters in the UK came calling and The Funkees packed up their instruments and moved to London, where they quickly established a fierce reputation on the live circuit. Here, they recorded two seminal albums before finally breaking up in 1977 amidst some controversy. This collection features for the first time all of their Nigerian 45s alongside the best of their UK album material and is accompanied by a full interview with original member Sonny Akpan, who still lives in the capital.

Title: Make It Fast, Make It Slow
Label: SOUNDWAY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: SNDW 040CD
Soundway re-issue Rob's second album for the first time outside Ghana. Rob was an enigmatic recording artist from Ghana who cut two albums for the legendary Essiebons label in 1977. Neither of these were big domestic hits at the time and have since become prized amongst collectors in recent years. The title track from this LP was always one of the most popular on the first Soundway release Ghana Soundz, and over the years, the label has been asked many times to re-issue the LP in its entirety. A stranger, slower offering than his more dancefloor funk-laden and spartan first LP, this record sees Rob in similar territory but with the tempo switched down and the introspection turned up. Rob's trademark horns dominate and are supplied by the Mag-2, an army band founded by leader Amponsah Rockson, who named it after the army unit the band played for -- the "magnificent" second battalion. In 1977, Rob traveled to the coastal town of Takoradi in search of Mag-2, which had an entire section of its line-up dedicated to horns, with the intention of laying out his proposal to them. Luckily for Rob, the band took him up on it. With religious overtones and a broody, slightly off-key atmosphere at points, it's certainly one of the stranger Afro-funk records to come out of West Africa but with tracks like "Loose Up Yourself" and "Make It Fast, Make It Slow," he nails it for sure.

Colombian multi-instrumentalist Lisandro Meza has been a key figure of Colombian popular music since 1961, first as a member of supergroup Los Corraleros de Majagual, and then in Banda Los Hijos de la Niña Luz -- the late-'70s band composed of his children and his wife. They played their own style of brass band street music that has its roots in the carnival tradition of Colombia. "Dejala Corre" (1980) is a huge favorite along the Caribbean coast of Colombia and in the interior, too. The flip side features an edit of the final segment of a long medley from a 1980 Los Hijos LP on legendary Colombian label Discos Fuentes. The two pieces featured are "El Sapo" which runs into a unique big band version of Rod Stewart's "Do You Think I'm Sexy (Crees Que Soy Sexy)." This is a tropical dancefloor double-sided bomb and strictly limited to 1000 copies. The record comes in a unique bespoke black printed sleeve on textured high quality manilla card.

Both tracks were originally served up on a super-limited 45 on Segraves Records in 1969 and highlight the massive influence of American soul music on musica Panameña during and after the black power cultural movement in the U.S. A reference to the early work of James Brown may seem a tad lazy, but it's accurate.
