Berlin's Ali and Basti Schwarz are brothers and music lovers. To celebrate 10 years of success as music producers and DJs, they release a double CD compilation on their own label, Souvenir. The first CD is a mixture of Ali and Basti's musical influences, spanning their entire DJ career (Antipop Consortium, Frankie Knuckles, Ewan Pearson, Marianne Faithfull). The second CD is an exclusive selection of the finest Tiefschwarz tracks, remixed by their favorite producers and friends (Radio Slave, Matias Aguayo, Shonky, Samim, Turntablerocker, Kiki, etc.). Tiefschwarz was created out of a passion garnered since 1990 from their first experiences as DJs at the now-legendary clubs that Ali ran, and from their debut album Ral 9005 on Four Music in 2000 to their legendary status as THE remixers, producers, and DJs in the world, they helped establish Fine Records in London and went on to spend the majority of their time working on the Eat Books album which was released in 2005. Eat Books went on to receive much critical acclaim, so in 2006, they released two DJ mix albums, one for the outstanding Fabric series and the other in conjunction with the Time Warp festival in Germany. Berlin's Ali and Basti Schwarz joined rhythmic forces sometime around 1997. Their first venture was 24 Seven, which firmly put the then-sleepy Stuttgart on the map as a top nightlife destination. The deep house duo then debuted with their single Music in 1999 and by 2001, the pair were expanding the parameters of modern dance music with their album RAL9005. Tiefschwarz quickly became a mainstay on the club scene. With the licensing of the album by Classic Recordings, Tiefschwarz captured the attention of London, paving the way for their rise to international notoriety. Through high profile remixes, they have also made a name for themselves as masters of reworking other people's tunes. Depeche Mode ("John The Revelator"), Madonna ("Get Together") and Spektrum ("Kinda New") are just three of the many artists who have had the Tiefschwarz treatment. And as it gets dark and the deep black of the night sets in, Tiefschwarz come to life -- clubbing being their biggest vice, yet also their biggest strength. Now they're back with their third album Chocolate, the first release on their own label, Souvenir. Techno and house still form the foundations, yet Tiefschwarz push themselves beyond their previous limits. They've found a new, intrinsic sound of their own that oscillates between numerous genres -- at once both clear-cut and immensely intricate. One minute, the steady bass drives a dancing rhythm, the next, it would have you believe that four-to-the-floor is actually a beat based on a prime number. Chocolate is everything: subtle, bitter, and sweet, without milk and sugar, hand-crafted from only the finest ingredients. "'Souvenir Souvenir,' the repeated phrase of a famous 1967 German pop song comes to mind easily thinking about our new Berlin-based label Pearl. Methinks Riton's 'Hammer of Thor' could easily be as smashing. The main tracks starts with heavy key and string setting and its imminent siren sounds set the pace for things to come. With works for Klang, Get Physical, Fabric et al Riton, pronounced 'Reeton,' the French 'street' term for his first name Henry can easily be called kid of the moment on the block and the gloriously open and full electronic warmth produced highly atmospheric 'Hammer of Thor' justifies it all. Chuggling bass Sounds, touching harmonies and an incredible plastified ebb and flow make a unique track like a breath of fresh air right for the start of the year. Flip it over and let Roman Flügel's remix take things even further on the point. Amorphous sounding, crafty kickdrum setting, a patchy chain of playful reloops, dramatic start and stop structure, tickling looped bells -- stringent mesmerizing dancefloor structure, kickass bass and fitting for no-nonsense all year round use."

Ruede Hagelstein is best known for techno and house, although his heart beats not only for the bass drum. His first album, Soft Pack, invites you to melancholic deceleration, which runs like a thread throughout the album. Yes, Ruede is a resident DJ at Berlin's Watergate club, but here he presents songs he would not play in the club because they are too downtempo and sentimental for sweaty dancefloor nights. In 2004, his first EP Sweaty Balls appeared on Freundinnen Records, the label of his friend and Berghain-Panorama Bar resident, ND_Baumecker. Celebrated in England by the sleazy disco crowd, and licensed by Output Records. The B-side, "Eclectic People," inspired France's electro-clash scene and landed on a Kitsuné Maison compilation. Despite different stylistic orientations, Ruede's choirboy vocal remained the unifying element. This was followed by functional techno hits on Lebensfreude Records, losing the vocals in the process. But Ruede Hagelstein hasn't lost any ground on the dancefloor with his new album. A good example of the arc that spans Ruede between strobe and candlelight is the track "Emergency," which stormed DJ charts and polls in 2010 and will be presented in a downtempo edit on Soft Pack. For most of the tracks, Ruede calls in for back-up, and formed a band, The Noblettes. Together with his buddy Justin Evans, he writes spherical numbers like "Posteriori" and "Leaving The Center," reminicent of Simon & Garfunkel. The most danceable track is "Private," featuring vocals from Aileen Mrkwitschka, although he also composes without beats, as on "Good Night" -- the complex horns are contributed by a friend of Aileen, Mieke Wenzl, who joined the band as a multi-instrumentalist. The blend of these four musical personalities is Ruede Hagelstein & The Noblettes, who managed to create this timeless indie-electronica album.

By himself, he has released on Playtime, Jesse Rose's Made to Play, Bedrock and now Souvenir. 'Mysterious Ex-Teacher' is eight minutes of dreamy synths floating on heavy stabs of dubby-electronic bass. 'Texas' is a smooth ride that fuses a disconnected spacey top-end with a simple forward-pushing b-line."

Ruede Hagelstein is a Berliner to watch out for, attracting praise from Claude Von Stroke and Laurent Garnier. The Modest EP is a slice of epic and chilling tech-house. Its opening track builds shimmering string instruments around a sonic jungle of machine noise. Ruede's remix of Dillon's "C Unseen Sea" gathers ghostly wind noises and the effects-soaked sounds of a child together with foreboding percussion. "It's On" has a 303-style bass line, raising the tension while synths and reverb-soaked percussion continue the surreal vibe.
