Artist: DRANSFIELD, BARRY
Title: Barry Dransfield
Label: SPINNEY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: SPINN 003CD
"Spinney follow up the re-release of the highly successful and much loved Vashti Bunyan album Just Another Diamond Day with this similarly lost gem of an album from Barry Dransfield. This album was described as 'Along with Vashti Bunyan's Just Another Diamond Day this debut solo album, full of beautiful and enchanting folk, is one of the two most sought-after major label folk albums'. Barry is an English folk fiddler & singer extraordinaire who was a leading light in the folk scene from the 70s onwards. He first came to prominence with the albums The Rout Of The Blues (1970 -- Melody Maker Folk Album Of The Year) and Lord Of All I Behold (1971) recorded with his brother Robin and released on the outstanding folk label Trailer (set up by ex-Transatlantic engineer Bill Leader). Having split with his brother, he made his first eponymous solo recording for Folk Mill/Polydor in 1972 that is now released by Spinney on CD for the first time. By this time, Barry had already instigated & appeared on the Morris On album for Island Records in the same year along with Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, John Kirkpatrick & Shirley Collins among others and went on to record The Fiddler's Dream album with the band Dransfield which also included his brother for Transatlantic before completing three more solo albums and much television work."

Artist: HANK DOGS
Title: Half Smile
Label: SPINNEY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: SPINN 004CD
Newly issued UK version on Vashti Bunyan's label, with 2 bonus tracks. US version was supposedly released in 2002 on SpinART, whatever the fuck that is... "As we all know Folk is having a big revival in 2004 with its many offshoot genres (Brit Folk/Laptop Folk/Folktronica/Country-Folk/Nu Folk etc ) encompassing a wide range of great artists from the likes of Laura Veirs and Laura Cantrell through to The Memory Band and Devendra Banhart. Here is a new, very special name to add to that list. Half Smile was recorded for Joe Boyd's Hannibal label (Boyd also produced the album) but was eventually picked up by spinART in the U.S. This version features 2 unreleased tracks ('Never Fails' & 'Heyday') and different artwork. Hank Dogs are a family who have been running the Easycome acoustic night for over a decade at the Ivy House in Peckham Rye and were arguably the progenitors of the whole nu-acoustic or nu-folk movement."

Artist: TRANSCARGO
Title: Momentum
Label: SPINNEY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: SPINN 007CD
"Last summer saw the release of Transcargo's debut album Idle Luxury on the esoteric Trunk Records. The band preside at their studio in London Bridge, formerly home to Stock Aitken and Waterman's Hit Factory, where they have recorded their second album, Momentum. Transcargo's music imaginatively covers an array of styles that prevent the band from being conveniently labelled and which enables the band to do anything and go anywhere to create their experimental pop. Aided by the vintage gear they collect and which can be heard in the layered production carried out by the in-demand Barny (who aside from mixing Kasabian's and The Arctic Monkeys' recent debut albums, has also written with Dead Or Alive) the band generate a sound that doesn't comfortably fit anywhere."

Artist: ARTERY
Title: Afterwards (Recordings From 1979-1983)
Label: SPINNEY (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: SPINN 008CD
"Artery are one of the most unsung of all the Sheffield bands to emerge from the post-punk era. At that time the city was a hotbed of creative activity, with the punk movement having broken down the barriers, leaving room for new and original ideas. Artery were certainly original -- unique even -- the evidence of which is amply displayed on this compilation of some of the band's finest moments. John Peel was a fan of the band and invited them to record two sessions for his Radio 1 show. So impressed were the band by the results they achieved at Maida Vale that some of the tracks were included in the mini-album Oceans and are included here. Compiled by Simon Hinkler from the band (and later of The Mission), this album includes all the early singles 'Mother Moon,' 'Unbalanced,' 'Cars In Motion' & 'The Clown,' most of the Oceans mini-album and the excellent and never-previously released INPUT Studios demos. Please do not confuse this album with the recent Cherry Red release Into The Garden which was not sanctioned by the band and confusingly, seemed to have been originally entitled Afterwards - A Collection. Available as a strictly limited edition utilizing the themes of the original artwork of the singles and mini-album, this is the introduction to one of the UK's most innovative and intense groups of the past twenty years."

Artist: JACK
Title: Pioneer Sountracks
Label: SPINNEY (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $23.00
Catalog #: SPINN 009CD
"Just over ten years after its original release, this album, named as one of the albums of 1996 by much of the music press, has been augmented by another disc of sixteen tracks incorporating single versions, B-sides, demos and live material from a Paris concert recorded at the Cigale in November of the same year. Together with revamped artwork and a 16-page booklet, this is a lovingly curated release. Jack were formed in Cardiff in 1992, based around the songwriting partnership of Anthony Reynolds and guitarist Matthew Scott, both of whom had relocated to London by the end of 1993. By the end of 1995, Jack was a six piece, signed to Too Pure/Beggars Banquet Records. Jack's debut album, Pioneer Soundtracks, produced by Peter Walsh (who had previously worked with Scott Walker), was released to worldwide critical acclaim (Ian Penman's Guardian CD of the week etc), in the summer of 1996."
