Kovac is a composer from the former Yugoslavia, whose music was previously brought to Western ears by the ReR label. This work, performed by his ever changing Ritual Nova Ensemble (soprano, violin, cello, piano, percussion, saxophone), is dedicated to the mystics Berdjiaev and Gurdjieff. "'Anamnesis' has a clearly chamber music set up, solemn atmospheres, minimalist innuendos, quasi-orchestral sonorities. Its evocative sonic landscapes, of a tormenting beauty, could be viewed as part of the ongoing spiritual renewal characteristic of many contemporary East-European composers such as Arvo Part and Henry Gorecki. Nevertheless, Kovac's music language is far more impure and contaminated. Duos recorded in Toronto in 1996 between Evan (soprano and tenor saxophones) and the amazing female vocalist from Tuva, Sainkho. "Having listened to Evan for close to 25 years in a multitude of configurations, there has always been surprise and challenge in his ever developing music; the solo music especially. If one investigates the recordings, mostly soprano, it becomes apparent that he is gradually releasing all the inner voices contained in his horn, and this time there appeared two distinct lines, overlapping, in parallel, joined in harmonics. The inclusion of the tenor in his solo music has opened up yet another avenue, perhaps for even the simple reason of it having a curved bell and being an octave lower. Although I had heard Sainkho Namtchylak recordings on Leo and FMP, I was quite unprepared for the live experience. Her arsenal of sounds come not as trick singing, but story-like, at times vague notions of Madame Butterfly enter my thoughts, another gurgling dialogue of happy babies; and then so low and deep in the throat as to create a definite shiver. "With reference to the title for the Fushitsusha album, Keiji Haino takes a lot of care and time over the selection of titles for his albums. He specifically asked that this title be translated into a type of English that would be reminiscent of medieval language. As going back that far would render the title mostly incomprehensible to the majority of listeners, we eventually came to the compromise of using Elizabethan-style (Skakespearean, etc.) grammar, spelling and diction. I found in it a totally different power from the music I had previously studied and played. When I play, sing and listen to this music, it goes directly to my heart. It is hard to explain, but I can even feel it in my DNA. I have been thinking about making my own Min-Yoh for a long time. I wanted to leave it its power. There are many music styles that have used the form, scales and rhythms of Min-Yoh, but they often lose the power, which is the most important part of this music. Here is an intimate opportunity to hear Braxton feature his recent foray into the world of laptop and interactive electronics. Braxton and laptop? What would this element bring to his music? Use of electronics is hardly unprecedented in Braxton's music. After all, he played with Richard Teitelbaum starting in the early '70s and featured Bob Ostertag on synthesizer in a late '70s version of his creative orchestra. But for the first time, Braxton is diving in to working with interactive electronics himself! As is always the case with Braxton, particular performances, groupings, and compositional forms are a point on an ever-evolving line. During the Sunday afternoon performance captured here, there was particular magic which Halvorson described as 'an exciting feeling of going into the unknown.'
