Artist: ACID MOTHERS GONG
Title: Live @ Uncon 06
Label: VOICEPRINT (UK)
Format: DVD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: VP 046DVD
"When the Acid Mothers Gong band manifested in 2003, it was yet another story in the evolving history of Gong, which started in 1968 in Paris. Daevid Allen had returned there after being refused entry to the UK for visa reasons when on the way to the Edinburgh Festival with Soft Machine, so he put his energy into Gong, which quickly came to the forefront of the avant garde. Paris was heating up for the revolution of workers and students against the government, and Daevid, with Gilli Smyth, had to flee as revolutionaries. They were in danger of being arrested for playing music to the students. After a disastrous trip to Morocco, they returned to Paris in 1969 to play at the Amougies Festival. They made several albums, and lived communally, which was an inspiration to that generation, and in 1971 Actuel magazine voted them the best alternative band in France. By l975, the band had moved to the UK and both Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen had left to pursue solo careers with their own bands such as Mother Gong, New York Gong, Gong Maison, PlanetGong and eventually Acid Mothers Gong. As Steve Hillage said 'nobody ever left,' and the history of Gong has been ever-changing, like a river. Acid Mothers are a collection of improvising musicians with formidable technical skills and a philosophical stance that has placed them at the tip of the Japanese underground iceberg. With more than 100 CDs to their name, they have a massive cult following internationally and are well known for never having played the same song the same way twice! They were the perfect choice, allowing Gilli and Daevid to go where few have ventured. Daevid and Gilli recorded an album in Australia with Acid Mothers in 2003, toured Japan with them a couple of times, and played the set (which is now this DVD) at the 'Unconventional Gong Gathering' in Amsterdam in November 2006. The recordings from that event were mixed and mastered by Harry Williamson at Spring Studios in Melbourne, with assistance from Daevid Allen, and Harry also did the psychedelic video edit, and created special effects which complement the music perfectly. This DVD is of a magical combination of musicians coming together to push the boundaries of improvised music -- the line up is Daevid Allen, Kawabata Makoto, Gilli Smyth, Higashi Hiroshi, Yoshida Tatsuya and Atsushi Tsuyama with special guest Josh Pollock from the University of Errors." NTSC format, region free.

Artist: SMITH & ED BLANEY, MARK E.
Title: The Train Part Three
Label: VOICEPRINT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: VP 503CD
"Mark E. Smith has been called a maverick over the last thirty plus years that he has led the Fall. Many people have tried to bend Mark E. Smith to their will and failed time and time again. If being a maverick means making music under your own terms whenever and with whomever you want, then Mark E. Smith is a maverick. Ed Blaney was a member of the Fall during late 2000-2001, playing on the album Are You Are Missing Winner, released in late 2001. In 2008, Smith and Blaney embarked on what seemed like a spontaneous project recording and releasing a number of limited edition singles. These singles were then collected together and released on an album entitled The Fall's Mark E. Smith and Ed Blaney. The Train Part Three is the second album recorded by the duo outside of the Fall activities. Recorded in October, November and December 2008, these are field recordings that have been edited in the studio. The recordings were made in Blackpool, Salford, York and shire, the midnight train from Sophia-Karnobat (Bulgaria) and finally edited in Blueprint Studios Salford by Gary Hadfield under the production supervision of both Mark E. Smith and Ed Blaney."

Artist: SLAPP HAPPY
Title: Ça Va
Label: VOICEPRINT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: VP 509CD
"Slapp Happy were a British/German rock band featuring Anthony Moore, Peter Blegvad and Dagmar Krause. The band was formed in 1972 and moved to the UK in 1974, where they merged with the band Henry Cow, although this merger didn't last long and the band subsequently split. There have been subsequent reunions alongside solo careers for the various members. This recording was, in effect, a reunion album originally released in 1998. The album contains 12 songs including 'Scarred For Life', 'Moon Lovers', 'King Of Straw' and Let's Travel Light'. Whilst fitting in well with the bands previous work, Ça Va has a modern feel and was received well on its initial release in 1998. The album has been unavailable for some time and this reissue will be warmly received by this band's dedicated and loyal fan base."

Artist: SOFT MACHINE
Title: Facelift
Label: VOICEPRINT (UK)
Format: 2CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: VP 233CD
"You may well ask, why release yet another live recording of a Soft Machine concert when there are already several available. Quite simply according to the line up which included Mike Ratledge, Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean and in their opinion it was one of the best performances they had done together. It was made in the middle of the classic Soft Machine period and contains all the major items that made up their repertoire of the time. The recording was made by Brian Hopper from the audience and as can be heard from the enthusiastic reception by the audience at the end, this was an outstanding Soft Machine offering, with an 'authentic' live sound exactly as it was actually experienced, heard here in glorious lo-fi, but a performance to treasure and above all to enjoy. It is the spirit and energy which comes through in a performance that is critical and if these are at a high point as they were in this concert then any shortcomings in sound quality can be ignored. Elton's playing was especially lyrical with a soaring, expressive fluency especially on 'Out- Bloody-Rageous', 'Backwards', 'Hibou Anemone & Bear' and 'Pigling Bland'. Hugh, as ever, underpinned everything with rock solid bass whilst displaying sensitivity and drive ? very necessary with the complex patterns being thrown around by the other three. Robert as a drummer, Robert as a vocalist, Robert as a musician -- all are inseparable. It is his total immersion in music that enables Robert to project his personality into all he does on stage and on record Mike's uncompromising strings of notes, leaps of musical structure and texture and complex time signatures all characterize a style not heard before (or since) in any band. The concert followed conventional practice with two sets separated by an interval. It was therefore appropriate to place the two halves on separate CDs to maintain the feel of the overall performance. This CD will be a must for the huge Soft Machine fan base especially with this brilliant line up."
