"Wah Wah Records proudly presents the new vinyl reissue of yet another smashing Spanish rarity. Musica Dispersa featured the talent of three of the most significant musicians from the Catalonian underground movement of the late '60s: Jaume Sisa, J.M. Brabo 'El Cachas' and Albert Batiste, who after their Miniatura project with Pau Riba were joined by young hippie girl, Selene. The album's title describes the sounds contained in the most precise way possible, but for those who need some extra lines to get into the groove, we must state that we face a masterpiece of melodic tunes that pay a certain tribute to the English folk movement of the era, as they do to early Amon Duül's freak out sound concept. Echoes of The Incredible String Band are present mainly in the guitar parts, drums are absent in all but one track (in which they are held by Josep Mª Vilaseca 'Tapi,' of Máquina & Tapiman fame) and percussion, harmonica, organ, mouth harp, piano and wordless vocals are heard all through the album, as is Selene's flute work. All in all, this is a strange, relaxing little piece of underground from Barcelona's early '70s hippie youth that has become a classic of our country's history of pop music, and that is yet again available in a 1000 copies only strictly limited edition that respects the original gatefold artwork, including the slight relief of the cover illustration. "Key duo from the Catalan folk rock scene, joint venture of Ia Clua (from Dos + Un) and Jordi Batiste (one of the leading forces of Máquina!), after the latter one's return from military service. Un Gran Día, the duo's first album, was recorded at the end of 1972 with the help of such outstanding musicians as Manel Joseph (ex Dos + Un, Ia's early band), Joaquín 'Max' Suñer (Vértice, Tapiman, Iceberg a.o. ) and Albert Batiste (Música Dispersa). "Often hailed as one the hard psych masterpieces to come out from Spain in the early '70s, The Beginning Of The End was the vinyl debut of Atila, a trio formed in 1973 by Eduardo Niebla (guitar), Joan Punyet (drums) and Francisco Ortega (keyboards). Originally released in 1975 by the obscure New Promotions label in a alleged tiny pressing of 100 copies the album has reached 'monster' status between die-hard collectors worldwide, sometimes reaching the 1500 euro tag. An incredible progressive tour de force, the album combined the typical classical leanings, fierce guitar leads and dark keys all over in the best European tradition of the era (think Italian prog). Another rarity which finally reaches a wider audience thanks to Wah Wah in a well presented reissue that is completed by two bonus tracks plus a 7" including two more extra tracks all taken from contemporary sessions (actually the same month as the album recordings) which show the band delving into Pink Floyd-territory circa More/Ummagumma (think 'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' and you'll be pretty close)."

"The second album release by the Catalan band, Màquina!, which was to be their musical goodbye as a band, is undoubtedly the highest peak reached by a Spanish band at its time. They were offering a live recording with a superb sound, and it was presented as a double album. Original singer Jordi Batiste joined the group for the occasion to leave a recorded testimonial of how the boys sounded in their latter days. Crude unadulterated jazz rock performances under the influence of black music, jazz and funk, and bands such as Chicago, Spirit or Blood Sweat & Tears, starring a tight base of drums-bass-guitar-Hammond and with the addition of a funky brass section. Soon after the record came out, the AZ's label owner committed suicide, the label resting orphaned and thus the release being unpromoted & undistributed sank in the dust of time. "Emtidi are best remembered nowadays for their classic album Saat, but prior to that release, the duo formed by Maik Hirschfeldt and Dolly Holmes had already released a marvelous LP. "The second of our reissues from The Village Thing catalog is this wonderful 1972 LP by the talented duo Ian Hunt and John Turner. Hunt & Turner got together in the summer of 1970, after having worked as some of the most in-demand session musicians of the West Country. Turner was an accomplished string bass player, while Hunt was already a big name on the Bristol scene, playing great guitar and writing songs. They moved around Bristol's Troubadour Club, which Turner had run for several years, and once the duo was arranged, they expanded their art around the UK and Europe. With this LP, they gathered a small amount of success, reaching #6 on the Melody Maker folk charts. More fabulous folk sounds, plenty of crystalline acoustic guitars and delicious vocals, at times reminiscent of CSN&Y and relatives. By 1970, and paying tribute to their early name, they had incorporated a whole array of influences (most important one, the inclusion of jazz instrumentation) and brewed them in what was becoming a very personal progressive fusion of styles, best witnessed in their their debut album Osmose. At that time, the band had grown into a septet formed by Uwe Bick (drums, vocals, percussion), Jürgen Jonuschies (bass, vocals, percussion), Werner Hostermann (clarinet, organ, vocals, percussion), Peter Werner (guitar, vocals, percussion), Hans Kámper (trombone, Spanish guitar, vocals, percussion), Ove Volquartz (sax) and Harald Klemm (flute, vocals, percussion). "Another unsung bunch of Krautrock pioneers, Limbus had formed in Heidelberg in 1968. Comprising the trio of Odysseus Artnerm, Bernd Henniger and Gerd Kraus, in 1969 recorded the groundbreaking New Atlantis LP (subtitling it 'Cosmic Music Experience') for CPM, a spaced-out concoction of free and psychedelic musics with strong folky and ethnical flavors sounding very much like a more ethnic take on free improvisation. In 1970 they become a quartet with the addition of Matthias Kniepper thus renaming themselves Limbus 4 and went to record the puzzling Mandalas LP, a further step in their cosmic ethnic improvisations, this time making use of a more varied instrumental palette and taking advantage of the possibilities of the recording studio. "After the release of their debut album Osmose and much playing in jazz festivals, Annexus Quam fronted some personnel changes and settled down to a quintet. The band was now Hans Kämper (trombone, Spanish guitar, flute), Harald Klemm (zither, tabla, bendira, guitar), Peter Werner (guitar, percussion), Ove Volquartz (tenor/soprano saxes, flute) plus newcomer Martin Habenicht (basses). This reduced formation went to record Beziehungen, a much more jazzy effort which headed straight into free jazz territory but retaining the typical inventive touch of the band. "YES! At last the glorious 1968 LP by The Magic Mixture gets the proper legit reissue. Originally released on Saga, this superb piece of psychedelic freakbeat should be in every record collection sharing section with UK psych gods like July, Skip Bifferty, Forever Amber, Five Day Week Straw People, The Open Mind and the likes. Even though according to the The Tapestry Of Delights book, the Saga LPs are supposed to have been recorded at a school premises rather than in a proper studio, this album has become a classic of the genre on its own, containing some killer psychedelic sounds delivered mainly by the guitar of leader Jim Thomas and his bandmate Stan Curtis' organ riffs. The line-up was completed with Jack Collins on drums and Melvyn Hacker on bass guitar. The songs are all original Magic Mixture compositions, and they are all excellent samples of what was going on in the UK when the genres who had been en vogue during the '60s (modern jazz, folk, R&B, pop...) were all put into the same cauldron in the search of a special mixture, eventually obtaining some great pop tunes played with a freakbeat edge and some early psychedelic sounds -- all pretty simple and without many gimmicks or studio trickery -- but amazingly lovely and very cool. It is one of the most sought-after Saga releases and one that commands high sums when it shows up on eBay. "Another collectable from the Saga back catalog, issued in 1970 on the Pantonic subsidiary, but originally recorded in Italy, this killer organ instro LP is reissued on vinyl for the first time. On their debut LP The Underground Set delivered a shot of groovy organ-ized go-go sounds -- the kind of sounds that wouldn't sound out of place at a late '60s European psychedelic club or a teen exploito movie, with the perfect mix of psychedelic/progressive garage attitude and library music dexterity. An album to be filed along other killers like Blue Phantom or Ugly Custard. But also the kind of sounds that would inspire later artists such as Graham Day when he formed The Prisoners. The Underground Set was also committed to record the soundtrack theme for a couple of Italian TV shows, and later recorded a second album which followed the same line but with a heavier progressive edge. "Here we unearth a missing nugget! Very little is known of The 4 Instants. They do not even appear on the Tapestry Of Delights (aka the Holy Bible of UK beat/R&B/psych/prog). Undoubtedly released as a teen exploitation album in 1966 by Saga on the Society subsidiary, the LP offers a tight mod R&B instrumental sound all through it, with killer Hammond organ and sensational guitar licks. Everyone into all night mod jazz/R&B partying shall consider this LP a classic on its own from now on! Think of Graham Bond Organisation, Dave Davani Four, The Mohawks, or any of those great mod jazz/soul jazz LPs that were imported from the U.S. in the era, and you'll get a close idea of what this album sounds like. "Thought from the beginning as a cash-in operation when hard rock began to spread throughout the UK, this LP features a very young band (keyboardist Jon Stoppard was 16 when this LP was released in 1973) performing the sounds of the day. Equinox consisted of Mick Shedd on vocals and guitar, Sid Oldfield on bass, Jon Stoppard playing organ and Terry Waldon as the drummer. Incidentally, they are not the ones who appear on the sleeve, where they were replaced by some unknown hipsters, and knowing Boulevard and its mother label Saga, it was probably a stock photo rather than a proper session paid for the occasion. The album sounds move through the early UK hard rock paths opened by bands such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin, and although it must be said that our youngsters can't match the playing skills of the bands they mirrored in, it's justice to state Hard Rock as a more than decent effort, and a true rarity even for the connoisseurs of the genre. "Ton Vlasman recorded this amazing piece of acid Euro folk back in 1970, making it sound like an outer space freaked out Bob Dylan with the help of Frans Schoonen (organ, flute and harmonica) and Leo van Vugt (chincha tumba and tambourine). The seven original compositions are stunning, drug inspired psychedelic pieces of acid folk that mix Dylan with Indian ragas and even add some Pink Floyd overtones, yet from an acoustic rather than electric point of view. And the album contains also a very cool version of The Velvet Underground's 'Pale Blue Eyes.' If you ever wondered how Dylan would have sounded covering The V.U., here's a close example! The album, originally released on the small Flame label from Amsterdam, sold poorly back in the seventies -- thus becoming a collector's piece when it was rediscovered in the eighties. This time we move over to France to re-discover the beginnings of one of the most adventurous, influential and innovative French bands of the seventies: Heldon. "Formed in 1970 in Munich, Between was an international band devoted to explore the spaces existing between (hence the name) disparate musical currents: from ancient music to avant garde from Western classical to Eastern musics, from medieval to pop music in a fresh approach that perfectly fitted the experimentation dominating the early '70s German music scene. Whereas many of their contemporaries favoured the introduction of electronic elements, Between relied mostly on purely acoustic sounds, albeit so distorted they would pass as electronic. Roberto Detree's self-made motocello was a constant source of other-wordly sonorities which permeated many of the band's compositions. Add to this Peter-Michael Hamel's Indian-influenced systemic organ minimalism and Cotch Black's hypnotical percussion and you'll get Between's sound in a nut-shell. A mystical vision not removed from that of their contemporaries Popol Vuh that predated much of the new-age, meditation and world-music fusions that would blossom in the '80s. Originally released by Vertigo in 1973 and housed in a colourful psychedelic sleeve by Guntram Holdgrün, this is often regarded as Between's most exotic and beautiful opus. "Om -- led by superb Catalan guitarist Jordi 'Toti' Soler after his previous band Pic-Nic split -- were one of the most interesting outfits to ever come out from Barcelona. Starting in 1968, their first recordings were done as a backing group for other artists like folk-singer Maria del Mar Bonet or American hippie Joe Skladzien, but most notably Pau Riba whom they backed on his debut LP, the legendary Dioptria, one of the finest pieces of European psych ever. During all their early work, the band benefited from the organ playing of one of the most talented Catalan pianists, Jordi Sabatés (of Ocells del més enllà fame) as well as the musical talents of two English brothers: drummer Peter Hodgkinson and his brother Tim on sax and keys (this is, of course, the same Tim Hodgkinson who founded Henry Cow, together with Fred Frith). One particularity of Om was that, rather than having an established line-up, they worked as a musical concept where it was not so important the individuals playing as it was the resulting sound. Their only LP shows how, through the works of Miles Davies, Gary Burton and John McLaughlin, they had developed their sound from its original psych/folk-rock beginnings to an intensely psychedelic jazz rock fusion. "At the dawn of the seventies, Barcelona's underground scene veered towards a jazz-oriented fusion sound with echoes of Gary Burton, Miles Davis and John McLaughlin. Two bands were at the forefront of this movement: Om and Jarka. The latter being the brainchild of Jordi Sabatés, one of the most talented pianists/keyboardists in the Catalan scene. A generation younger than the late great Tete Montoliu, with whom he also recorded, he found fame on the teenage pop charts of the late sixties with the outfit Pic-Nic, where he joined forces with Toti Soler and Doro Montaberry. After the split of Pic-Nic, he collaborated Hammond organ in Om, when the band was acting as a backing group on the recordings of the top Catalan artists, most notably Pau Riba whom they backed in his masterpiece debut LP Dioptria. In 1971, Sabatés started his own band, together with bassist Alfonso de Lucas and drummer Pedro Van Eeckout (ex Pan Y Regaliz). "When the bunch of filmmakers known as The Pattern Group (Roland Moreau, Georges Perdriaud and Jean Talansier) did Libra, their second movie, in 1973 they thought it would be a good idea to use bits from Pink Floyd's Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother to create its soundtrack. The movie, a 90-minute film with no dialogue, depicts the story of four youngsters living in communion with nature, an idyllic life that is drastically changed when a U.S. satellite crashes in the area and attracts the attention of journalists and TV crews that come to destroy the peace of the place. Obviously, the Pink Floyd bits had been used without permission, and The Pattern Group saw they needed an original soundtrack if they wanted the film released without legal trouble. They approached Jean-Michel Jarre, who declined the invitation to create the new soundtrack, but suggested instead Philippe Besombes. Besombes was a sound explorer who walked similar paths as other avant gardist young musicians from his generation such as Richard Pinhas (Heldon), Paul Putti (Pôle), Jean Louis Rizet or Jean-Michel Jarre himself (way before he became the famed wizard of commercial synth music as we know him today). Besombes was requested to produce a soundtrack 'in the style' of those Pink Floyd tracks used. However he came up with that and more. Always aiming to find new ways of musical expression, he produced music that fitted perfectly in what the filmmakers needed but which was totally of his own. Surrounded by a cast of friends, he locked himself in the basement of his girlfriend's father (who even ended up providing the financial funds for the project to reach an end!) and taped the amazing sounds that form the Libra soundtrack, a landmark in French electronic tripping music. The soundtrack was recorded in 1974, and it was released as a vinyl LP on the Tapioca label in 1975. It has since become a highly sought-after LP among collectors of electronic music worldwide, and gets its first vinyl reissue on Wah Wah in a deluxe edition that features a lavish 12" sized, six-page booklet with plenty of photographs from the era and information on the making of Libra in texts written by Philippe Besombes himself and Raul G. Pratginestós."

"There are records that come from the soul. No matter how primitive may be the recording techniques the musician has access to, the soul gets its way to the heart and mind of the listener. Samtvogel is one of those records. Günter Schickert recorded that amazing piece of human greatness in 1974, using the media he had at the time, putting his brain at work to find the best way of taping everything he had to say. 'When I was recording Samtvogel in 1974 I had only 2 Taperecorders. I played one track and while listening I added the second one. And so on. Four times. When I mixed all together I borrowed a 3rd taperecorder. And still added the last track to the master. I had a small mixer with 2 stereo and 1 mono but it was possible to pan tracks. No equalization. It all came out of my still living G2000 Dynacord guitar amplifier, of course valve, with no master, even the voice recorded through it. If I made a mistake in 1 track I had to repeat it from the beginning. And if while mixing I was not fast enough in changing the tape I had to start again. So it took me more than 3 months to get ready.' Thanks to these three months of work, between June and September of 1974, Samtvogel was privately issued that same year. It would later be issued on the Brain label, with a small change in the artwork -- titles added to the front cover, which weren't on the original private pressing. Brain also reissued it on the label's Rock On Brain LP series, this time with a completely different sleeve. The album contained two tracks on side one and just one on side two, and its sound has often been compared to the most explorative works of Syd Barret -- however it must be pointed out that Schickert did not need any mind spreading substances to allow his sounds to float out of his mind & soul, they just came out in the most natural way. It will also appeal to fans of the echoed atmospheric guitar work of other Krautrock innovators such as Ash Ra Temple, Manuel Götsching or A.R. & The Machines, and some may find on the vocal passages certain resemblances to Damo Suzuki on Can's Tago Mago era. "After the success of the previous Wah Wah reissue of Anima Sound's Stürmischer Himmel we are proud to offer a first ever vinyl reissue of their Musik Für Alle album, one of the rarest private pressings in the Krautrock scene. In 1971 Paul and Limpe Fuchs loaded their instruments on an old tractor and spent six months touring through Germany at 20 km/h. When the summer came, they stopped in front of Willy Neubauer's recording studio in Düsseldorf and there they taped a music memory of the tour. Two long pieces, 17 minute long improvisations titled 'N Da Da Uum Da' and 'Traktor Go Go Go', were to be privately released as an LP on their own Altepfarhof label. By some, these two tracks 'can surely be considered as one of the best psychedelic experiences ever created, due to the intensity of the recording.' On their performance the group produced many wonderful and inspired sounds, many of them coming from Paul Fuch's self-built instruments, and counted with the post-production collaboration of Neubauer's Echolette Ringmodulater. It is ironic that a UK band can be so influenced by those US bands that were most highly under the influence of British popsike! A surprisingly good production for a Saga pop/psych LP, the album is built up of excellent cover versions of some greats of the genre, paying tribute to the likes of The Left Banke ('Walk Away Reneé'), Simon & Garfunkel / Harper's Bizarre ('Feelin' Groovy') or even Buffalo Springfield ('Go And Say Goodbye') and also of some good originals in the same vein. "Another lost gem of French underground music, Delired Cameleon Family was originally conceived as the soundtrack to Pierre Clémenti's Visa de censure nº X, and was originally released as an LP in 1975. It was a host of reputed experimentalists who took charge of producing this soundtrack. Under the direction of Cyrille Verdeaux we found the likes of Yvan Coaquette (Música Electrónica Viva, Spacecraft...), Gilbert Artman (Lard Free, Urban Sax...), Christian Boulé, Tim Blake (Gong, solo recordings...), Ariel Kalma (Heldon, solo recordings), Jean-Claude d'Agostini, François Jeanneau, Jean Padovani, Olivier Pamela, Joël Dugrenot, Antoine Duvernet, Aude Cornillac and Valérie Lagrange. Cyrille Verdeaux was, of course, the main force behind the better known French band Clear Light. Verdeaux was born the 31st of July of 1949 in Paris. At the age of 15 he became a student at the French National Conservatory of Music, specialising in studies of harmony, composition and piano. He won three times the first prize in student composition. After the 1968 student riots he left the Conservatory to join a band as a keyboardist. In 1972 he released Clearlight Symphony, thus forming the band Clear Light to tour through Europe performing his symphony. Clear Light would release three more LPs through the '70s, and also the soundtrack to Visa De Censure. The music form Delired Cameleon Family, as it has been told somewhere, 'is the synthesis of piano's technical, epic scales, psychedelic wah wah guitar sounds and electronic cosmic, molecular machines arrangements.' We are proud to add this great experimental trippy soundtrack to the Wah Wah catalogue, reissued in cool vinyl, with remastered sound, housed in a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve and complete with an insert with liner notes and photos. "Bernard Ilous came from a music lovers family, his parents were into jazz and classical music and the young Ilous inherited that sensitivity to the point of teaching himself to play guitar and piano. He discovered R&R and started doing covers of The Beatles and Bob Dylan, but he soon showed skills to write his own compositions. He showed his work to music publisher Gerard Tavernier who signed him to his company and thus some of Ilous songs appeared on LPs by Francoise Hardy, Eric Charden, Johnny Hallyday, Dick Rivers, a.o. In 1969 his friend Claude Putterflam left his job at Vogue to create Flamophone records and he produced a single for Ilous, who was willing to release his own songs by himself. Very soon Ilous joined forces with Patrice Decuyper with whom he would record the amazing LP on offer here. Issued also on Flamophone in July 1971, its blend of folk & pop brings to mind echoes of The Beatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young or Joni Mitchell. The sound on the LP is amazing, they took one whole year to produce it, as they were using free studio hours now and then to stay into a budget, and they played most of the guitars and keyboards and were helped by friends from Le Systeme Crapoutchik on other instruments. The production is excellent and the compositions are amazing, probably one of the most impressive French-sung LPs of all time, and a must for lovers of 60s and 70s perfectly arranged & produced, well crafted works. "Ophiucus released their debut LP in 1972. It is one of the masterpieces of French psychedelic/progressive/folk music, and members of the band included Jean-Pierre Pouret -who had recorded with Sylvie Vartan, Antoine and Herbert Leonard a.o.; brothers Alain and Bernard Labacci (a.k.a. Tom & Jerry - they even supported Jimi Hendrix on a TV appearance) and Michel Bonnecarrere, who had founded the band Zoo. The sound production is amazing, as it used to be with French albums of that era, basing its strength on acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies, but not refusing to add subtle layers of electric arrangements, even featuring a couple of totally electric Hendrix-influenced songs ('Djarbouka' should become a classic among those dee-jaying at heavy psych parties from now on!). And the band's performance is top level! This amazing album was even planned for an international release and looking for that they even produced a version of it with English lyrics (which can be found on the bonus tracks of the currently available CD release by Lion Productions), but we are sticking to the original release, with the original French-sung versions of the songs, and respecting the beautiful original artwork. "Out of the mysterious mind of Andrea Centazzo came Elektriktus. Originally released on the PDU label, the LP Electronic Mind Waves offers a collection of eight synth-fueled songs that sound very close to what kraut/cosmische heads were doing at the time, think of Conrad Schnitzler, Deuter or Cosmic Jokers, and also other European experimentalists like Richard Pinhas' Heldon, Spacecraft, Didier Bocquet, Seesselberg, F.G. Experimental Laboratory, Roberto Cacciapaglia or Hydrus. Along with Cacciapaglia and Hydrus, Elektriktus shows the most adventurous experimental sounds under a kraut/cosmische music influence to ever come out of Italy. "The origins of Ame Son go back to the mid-sixties, when Bernard Lavialle (guitar), Bernard Stisi (guitar, vocals), Patrick Fontaine (bass) and Marc Blanc (drums) formed Les Primitivs circa 1965. They took the Parisian stages with a Yardbirds/Pretty Things inspired wild R&B set, and they kept active until Stisi left in 1967. At that point they changed their name to Expression, and with a more experimental approach they took their newly find free rock sound a la Soft Machine to night clubs and also to exhibitions of modern art. It was around that time that Marc Blanc met Australian ex-patriate Daevid Allen, who had been the guitarist with the Soft Machine until he hadn't been allowed to return to the UK after some south of France gigs of the band. Allen settled in Paris where he would form Gong, but before that he was to be joined by Blanc and Fontaine in his new project Banana Moon. After the Banana Moon period Lavialle, Fontaine, Blanc and flutist Francois Garrel regrouped under the name of Ame Son and were featured with great acclaim on some of the most important festivals of the era. The BYG label signed them and in 1970 they recorded their now legendary LP. The album was conceived pretty quickly and it has a spontaneous, energetic psychedelic/free rock feel with a pretty psychedelic prog sound that drinks from the same springs as bands such as Gong, the Soft Machine, the Pink Floyd or Guru Guru. Ame Son were one of the earliest French rock bands to go beyond the conventional rock and roll of the time, and Catalyse is considered to be one of the first truly progressive/underground efforts at thrity-three tours in France. The Wah Wah reissue features the original German gatefold cover, remastered sound, a repro of a very cool original Ame Son period poster plus photos and liner notes. Agneta Nilsson is an interesting step in Heldon's development: it gives a twist to their classic sound, which was mainly built around Pinhas' Fripp-esque guitar work and ambient synth experiments to begin to explore a more rhythmic territory. Drums and bass take more presence here, offering a 'rockier' feel, but somehow retaining the mysterious ambience of its predecessors, while adding an extra touch of sinister aggressiveness. "Roberto Cacciapaglia had already gathered attention for his excellent work at the keyboards on Franco Battiato's legendary second LP Pollution before joining forces with Krautrock mastermind Rolf Ulrich Kaiser for the release of his 1975 masterpiece Sonanze. Cacciapaglia self-produced the album in Milan for the Cosmic Couriers label, and it certainly brings echoes of some cosmiche kraut experiments like those of Popol Vuh, Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream, yet retaining a unique personality of its own. Actually it's the feel given by Cacciapaglia's mixture of classical sense compositions (he was trained in Milan's Giuseppe Verdi conservatory) with adventurous experimentalism (he worked for the RAI's phonology research team and also at the CNR in Pisa) what makes the sound of Sonanze so unique. According to the Scented Gardens of the Mind book, 'good musical references might be Terry Riley, Franco Battiato (Sulle corde di Aries), Klaus Schulze (Cyborg) and William Scheller (Lux Aeterna).' "Through Tim Blake, Gong's synth player at the time (one of Branson's first artists), Cyrille Verdeaux signs for Virgin in 1974. That same year Clearlight Symphony is recorded (clearlight stands for a type of LSD). For its recording sessions Cyrille uses two different line-ups, each in charge of each of the two parts of the work. On one side there's ex Babylone members Christian Boule, Lard Free's Gilbert Artman and bassman Martin Isaacs. They record along with Verdeaux on Virgin's Manor studio. The other side will be canned at Kaleidophon studios, ran by White Noise's David Vorhaus, where Cyrille is joined by Gong members Tim Blake, Steve Hillage and Didier Malherbe. Verdeaux's original idea was to feature the Manor studio recordings on side A, but thinking heads at Virgin thought better to flip sides to make more profit of Gong's commercial success. A curious decision, since you normally don't promote an LP with the same strategy you would use for a single! Clearlight Symphony was released in 1975 with small echo in press and public, although it has nowadays reached a cult status among followers of the symphonic -- cosmic -- progressive genres. In what refers to its musical content, Clearlight Symphony is a completely opposed concept to that of the other project in which Verdeaux was involved at the time: the collective album Delired Chameleon Family (also reissued recently on Wah Wah Records), a brilliant psychedelic dive into the French underground of the seventies. Clearlight Symphony, instead, is a much more author-controled work, where all the musicians adapt themselves to Verdeaux's circular, systematic composition. The alleged and collected improvisations, dissonances and atonalities (superb Boule), the rhythmic tension of Artman's enigmatic, Heldonian drumming, Blake's environmental VCS3 modulations, Hillage's content cosmicism, Verdeaux's crescendos and counterpoints -- plus echoes of Debussy, Terry Riley, Soft Machine, Magma, and why not, the aforementioned Tubular Bells. "'Recorded in 1968 and issued as a very limited run private pressing this psychedelic raga freak-out is the brainchild of multi disciplinar artist Loren Standlee plus his partner Ziska with the cooperation of Daevid Allen and Gilli Smith in what was an early incarnation of Gong. Loren and Ziska had been involved with the crowd of avantgardist free thinkers that settled in Formentera in the sixties, and back home in N.Y. they had also been connected to experimentalists such as Angus Maclise, Marian Zazeela, Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Pandit Pran Nath, a.o. This bizarre selection of sounds was the brainchild of Loren Standlee and Ziska and features a very early Gong incarnation. Loren Standlee and Ziska were among the 'Formentera' (small Island near Ibiza, Spain) visionary poets, musicians and psychedelic 'researchers' in the early sixties. In Paris, they began hand-painting silk and designing clothes for many of the rock luminaries of the time, among them The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, as well as haute couture designers in Paris and London. They met Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth at a poetry reading where Loren was playing Alto Flute and Ziska was creating vocal sounds to intermix with the flute. They began playing together as a group utilizing Daevid's Italian echo chambers and soon they had a two-night-a-week gig playing at the Vielle Grille, an avant guard club in Paris where you might hear Ornette Coleman playing upstairs or see Yoko Ono performing in a sack on stage. Two of the tracks on the bonus LP, feature the line-up of Loren, Ziska and Raj Samyana, which is basically The Universal Mutant Repertory Company minus Angus Maclise and his wife Hetty. An original copy would cost you a small fortune (raising over 4 digits!), but here's at last an accurate vinyl reissue that comes complete with liner notes plus an amazing poster of one of Loren Standlee's psychedelic collages plus an extra LP with previously unreleased studio material. "Limited repress of this little known gem by Dutch Hammond king Roland Thyssen under his Bun Hunga pseudonym which has already been tipped as one of the best exploited albums of the continent. "In 1972, Josep Cunill, after having spent some years touring Latin America with several professional orchestras, most notably The Latin Combo, was commissioned by producer Miguel Casas to record an anthology gathering some of the most popular Catalan rumba tunes. He entered Gema Studios with some of the most reputed musicians of the genre to record Rabbit Rumba. With the basic tracks covering some of the most successful artists of the genre like Peret or Los Amaya y su Combo Gitano laid in Gema 1 studio he finished the tapes at Gema 2 with the help of a Hammond X-77 that he used to produce layers of cool organ sounds. The resulting recordings have been labelled as 'The Jackie Mitoo of Catalan Rumba!' or sort of 'Jimmt Smith if surrendered by gypsies!' Cunill's rumba benefited of this great musician's high experience in all sorts of Latin sounds, he brought from Latin American & Caribbean shores a rhythm cadence that was then uncommon in Catalan rumba and that makes Rabbit Rumba one of the most interesting and sought after albums of the genre. The good news is that paying high amounts for a vinyl copy of this little gem is over, since thanks to Wah Wah this wonder of rumba sound is available again. "First ever vinyl reissue of this 1972 masterpiece by another of the big names in UK jazz. Neil Ardley was offered the leadership of the seminal New Jazz Orchestra in 1964. Under his direction the Orchestra moved though different styles and changes of personnel, bringing in musicians such as Mike Gibbs (trombone), Harry Beckett and Henry Lowther (trumpets), and even Jack Bruce (bass). Some of them also contributed with the writing of original compositions, making the NJO the root from which the UK's '70s jazz scene was to blossom. By 1972 the NJO was already defunct, but his legacy remained in the works of its members. Ardley's A Symphony of Amaranths is a perfect example of what was boiling in the UK jazz scene. It was Ardley's tribute to his idols Duke Ellington and Gil Evans, and featured the skills of some great musicians of the scene including Don Rendell, Stan Tracey, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, Jeff Clyne, and Jon Hiseman. "The Inner Space is the stuff of legend. This obscure outfit is best known as the antecessor band of Can and not much is known about them except it featured the core members of Can (Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit) and lasted just a few months before renaming themselves The Can and releasing Monster Movie. They left two ultra-obscure seven inches as their only recorded legacy and only the first of them is credited to The Inner Space, it contained two songs taken from the soundtrack of 1969's underground film Agilok & Blubbo. Originally released by the German Vogue label in 1969, it currently fetches prices around the 300 euro mark in the collector's circuit. Given the obscurity of both the band and its recorded output, we're proud to present, for the first time to the public, not only the aforementioned singles but the complete soundtrack to Peter F. Scheneider's offbeat political satire Agilok & Blubbo. Previously unavailable until now, the original master tapes of this soundtrack have been stored in the archives of legendary German producer and music publisher Hans Wewerka who produced the recording sessions back in 1969. Here you can hear history in the making, the first step of a group of musicians who'll go on to achieve fame, success and recognition over the '70s, helping define a sound (often called Krautrock) that has been highly influential to this day. Those familiar with Can's output will recognize some of the band's characteristic sound, albeit in an embryonic form. Songs like 'Agilok & Blubbo' or 'Kamera Song' already hint at their later pop brilliance whereas the short cues and extended free jams found elsewhere in this soundtrack reminds us from the heterogeneous roots of a bunch of musicians coming from rock, jazz and avant-garde backgrounds.
