"With the frenzied knocking of what sounds like a clock shop gone berserk, Crossings takes the Herbie Hancock Sextet even further into the electric avant-garde, creating its own idiom. Now, however, the sextet has become a septet with the addition of Dr. Patrick Gleeson on Moog synthesizer, whose electronic decorations, pitchless and not, give the band an even spacier edge. Again, there are only three tracks ? the centerpiece being Hancock's multi-faceted, open-structured suite in five parts called 'Sleeping Giant.' And they remain there ever so briefly until an entire orchestra chimes in behind her in a straight blues waltz that places her wondrously jagged soloing within the context of a universal everything -- at least musically -- in that she moves through jazz, Indian music, blues, 12-tone music and the R&B of Ray Charles. This is the historical and spiritual context Alice Coltrane made her own, the ability to open up her own sonic vocabulary and seamlessly enter it into an ensemble context for an untold, unpredictable expression of harmonic convergence. While many other players have picked up on it since, Coltrane's gorgeous arrangements and canny musical juxtapositions never seem forced or pushed beyond the margins. "The standout cut is 'Do Your Thing,' a simmering call to the dancefloor that plays on the strengths of this very tight band, slowly building into an undeniable groove; the record-buying public thought similarly, pushing 'Do Your Thing' to number 11 on the Billboard charts. About a third of Together follows in this funky groove: 'Giggin' Down 103rd,' 'Sorry Charlie,' and the sax feature 'Phuncky Bill.' There are some covers here too, the mid-show cool down of 'Stormy Monday,' a tip of the hat to JB with 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag,' and a 200 mph run-through of Eddie Floyd's 'Knock on Wood.'
