Domestic issue of their debut album, from 1991. "Nightmares on Wax's A Word of Science was recorded at the height of happy hardcore fever that gripped the UK in the early 1990s. Alongside groups such as the Prodigy, LFO and Unique 3, Nightmares on Wax introduced a hard electronic sound that tore up house music and overthrew acid. 'A Case of Funk' has that typically hysteric, operatic sound that made early-1990s Brit electronic music the rush that it was; the same goes for the squidgy synths and tribal beats of 'Coming Down'. Both tunes reflect the increasing influence of Ecstasy on the rave scene as mellow euphoria was replaced by a sharper, teeth-grinding groove. However, 'MegaDonutz' starts as typical hardcore but warps into a 45 King style hip-hop production while 'Back In Time' is down-tempo and uses an old Bizmarkie sample -- even with the rave scene around them, NOW went back to their original hip-hop roots. A vivid snapshot of British dance music at the turn of the 1990s."

Like the Caliphs of the Ummahs of the 7th century, orchestrating affairs from their palaces, Gonjasufi has assembled a collection of artists in his musical world and invited them to exchange ideas. In this spirit, the symbolic and musical centerpiece of the album, as well as its namesake, is the result of the mutual admiration formed between Gonjasufi and Broadcast and The Focus Group. A bewitching, drastic re-working of 'DedNd,' it takes the form of a suite of layered compositions and radiophonic transmissions. Elsewhere, reinterpretations from new talents shine while established artists continue to surprise. Mark Pritchard (Harmonic313, Africa Hitech) channels Ennio Morricone with epic orchestral dystopia on his remix of 'Ancestors' while retaining the inherent gravity of Flying Lotus' original production. "With The Only She Chapters, Guillermo Scott Herren takes an even more exploratory approach to his methodical chaos. An impressive cast of contributors and unique recording process have helped form a body of music far closer in scope to the most esteemed modern compositional works rather than a record built fundamentally around beats and loops. As the sounds within took shape, so did a defined female influence and unifying presence. Says Guillermo, 'The process features all women vocalists and voices and the music was recorded very differently from how I normally work.' "Bibio's music may be more familiar to you than you realize. Not necessarily because you've heard it before, but because even on first listen it triggers brilliantly hazy moments of d�j� vu. Of course, there is the strong possibility you have heard his music before, as the soundtrack to scores of Vimeo short films, his previous release (and Pitchfork 'Best New Music'd) Ambivalence Avenue, or more recently in the current Amazon Kindle ad which took 'Lovers' Carvings,' a favorite from the last record as its soundtrack. Since Ambivalence Avenue, his debut for Warp, he's gathered together all the disparate strands of his myriad phases and influences to create a concentrate that works as full-on, neon-lit pop. And not every day, auto-tune pop, but champagne cork pop - a jolting, immediate, highly pleasant surprise from out of the blue, which is titled Mind Bokeh. Says Bibio, 'Bokeh is the out of focus region of a photograph. It's not a quantifiable thing, but photographers and lens manufacturers are obsessed with it. In Japanese it means "haze," "blur," or even "dementia." I called the album Mind Bokeh because I'm interested in the effect of defocusing your mind, whether through meditation, chemicals or whatever - it's a state of mind quite alien to Westerners.' Bibio is on the brink of big pop things but he's the anti-PT Barnum. He recalls (and firmly agrees with) a quote he memorized from an old Boards of Canada interview, 'always assume that the listener is the most intelligent person imaginable. "In July 2011, DRC Music - a collective of producers led by Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) - headed to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo to make a record with contemporary Congolese musicians. DRC Music is comprised of producers: T-E-E-D (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs), Dan The Automator, Jneiro Jarel, Richard Russell, Actress, Marc Antoine, Alwest, Remi Kabaka, Rodaidh McDonald and Kwes. Each of them has donated their time and waived all royalties to this work. The sounds created were completely different to normal instrumentation because the local instruments were primarily homemade from whatever was available. As Dan the Automator said, 'The equipment they created to make music was amazing. The drive and spirit to create with whatever was available was the highlight to me--old fans, tins, tree trunks, homemade drums, metal rods.' The Democratic Republic of Congo has long been wracked by conflict and is home to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Proceeds from the album will benefit the local performers and Oxfam's work in Congo. Oxfam fights poverty and suffering in DRC through the empowerment of individuals and communities based on their rights, such as the right to clean water or to live in safety. Oxfam has been in DRC for 50 years and now has more than 350 staff in projects across the country, responding to emergency situations in order to save lives."
