Onur began his musical career in the late '90s, when minimal house and tech-house were making a resurgence in Istanbul. In a city oppressed by both a stifling heat and a musical style equally as stagnant, Onur helped battle to change the old rules and break old habits, breathing fresh life into a dispirited club scene. Word quickly caught on, and the clubs soon filled up for Onur's increasingly renowned sets. Onur continued to fight the cause and helped found a number of new, vanguard venues, recognized for constantly bringing new sounds, styles and names to Turkey's capital. Onur's affiliation with Watergate started off with his residency at the infamous Dumb-Unit/Vakant parties. Here, he instantly developed a close rapport with both the crowd and the club. Sascha Funke is an honest-to-goodness Berliner, and he has played a significant role in molding and forming the Berlin techno scene since the mid-'90s. Now, after various stops along the way, he has found his home and a residency at Watergate. Sascha delivers a mix that is second to none in its musical diversity. At the same time, his personality shines throughout the entire project and reflects his self-perception as a DJ. In addition to current tracks and remixes, the mix is interlaced with carefully-chosen jewels and rarities from years past. The mix was recorded at the Watergate Club on a warm August night, using records of various ages. Sebo K mixes and curates this fourth volume in Watergate Records' series of mixes dedicated to the sounds of the Watergate Club in Berlin. Sebo K has long been a key figure in Berlin's music community, starting his DJ career in the early '90s at Alec Empire's Bass Terror nights, Berlin's first UK-style breakbeat parties. Ellen has been a resident of the club for a few years now, and her BPitch label nights with the whole label roster as well as her solo appearances at Watergate have always been special nights. Ellen Allien has been a part of the Berlin techno scene since its very early days, starting as a DJ in West-Berlin's famous Fischlabor in the late-'80s. She quickly moved on to bigger clubs, playing legendary places such as Berlin's Bunker, Tresor and E-Werk, not to forget her weekly radioshow "Braincandy" on Kiss FM. Throughout the years, Ellen developed the idea of BPitch Control, her now flourishing record-label which stands for her very own brand of Berlin-sound, showcasing the talents of artists born and raised in the city. On the sixth edition of the Watergate series, Watergate presents the Parisian band dOP, made up of Clement Zemtsov (beat programming), Damien Vandesande (keyboards and horns), and Jonathan Illel (lyrics and vocals). Breaking with the label's tradition of a classic DJ mix for the first time, this CD sounds more like a live jam to which the three Frenchmen invited numerous renowned guests. dOP had this to say about the mix: "This mix should show how we make music, both alone and with friends or people that inspire us. Watergate gave us the opportunity to create our first mix CD, so we wanted to make it something special. We invited over other artists that we're friends with to come work on songs with us, and we then used those songs for the mix." As a result, 12 of the 13 tracks are by dOP and have not yet been released! Tiefschwarz mixes the ninth edition of the Watergate compilation. This series is a further means for the club to stamp its seal onto the scene, with many of the club's residents and regular talents having been invited to contribute. Previous artists have included the likes of Ellen Allien, Sascha Funke and Lee Curtiss, amongst others. This time round, the mighty Schwarz brothers step up, using it as a means to take stock and look back at their extensive music career. The mix takes them all the way back to their early days throwing parties in Stuttgart, at the Red Dog club which they named in honor of the legendary Chicago venue. These soulful roots which first hooked them and got them producing, stuck with them throughout, an insistence of melody and warmth which has pervaded throughout all their productions regardless of whether it can be labeled deep house, electro house or minimal. This mix is just a way of demonstrating the sheer timelessness of classic production techniques and how they so readily still influence so many of today's releases. Neither is it just a mere greatest hits of Chicago and Detroit, a legendary anthem like Frankie Knuckles' "Baby Wants To Ride" sitting quite comfortably alongside the tense melodies of John Roberts' house, which itself wears its Chicago influence proudly on its sleeve. There are some real dancefloor bombs, the cult classic "Intellidred" remix of DJ Assassin which slides effortlessly into the infectious jack of Kevin Saunderson. The anthemic MK classic "Burnin'" comes in a surprising new form, courtesy of Jay Haze, and there's plenty more vocal action in the mix with Julio Bashmore's recent smash "Father Father" and a brand new Tiefschwarz production punctuated with the ethereal voice of Mama. One of Tiefschwarz's first loves were the prolific house legends Masters At Work, a true personal milestone for the brothers when they were asked to remix their heroes' smash hit "To Be In Love." They've included one of their all-time favorites, the MAW remix of the Afro Celt Soundsystem, the world music collective on Peter Gabriel's influential Real World Records. This then functions to lead out the mix, the brothers deftly tracing a line through a very recent Marc Ashken track on Hot Waves and into Romanthony's "Rumpshaker," which, having been released on their own first label back in 1997, draws a neat circular close to this very personal retrospective.
