"Train of Thought is not only significant for being the latest album by Detroit legend Terrence Dixon but for being Yore's premiere full-length release. Dixon, of course, is well-known for his Population 1 releases on Juan Atkins' Metroplex imprint as well as for deep material issued under his given name on Tresor and Utensil. Other career highlights include co-producing Atkins' Skynet album (under the Infiniti alias) and Dixon's recent standout, Minimalism III, on Background Records. Dixon's uncompromising sound is heard in full effect on Train Of Thought. The album's tracks range from '80s-sounding Cybotron-like excursions to raw, stripped-down techno and warm, chord-driven house tunes. The double-vinyl set includes rapturous settings of synthetic sound and swinging cuts whose burbling keys, pounding kick drums, and brisk hi-hats evoke the brilliant sheen of Detroit techno. The striking 'Links' showcases Dixon's most artistically innovative side by pairing a locomotive tech-house pulse with complex vibraphone patterns that may remind listeners of Steve Reich's music; it's no exaggeration to state that nothing like 'Links' has ever been heard in dance circles before. "Naturally, the material's deep fusion of house and techno is given the lush production treatment we've come to expect from Vaz but the EP is also, without question, his most dancefloor-oriented release with all three tracks exuding a laser-sharp club focus. Another distinguishing feature is that the material locates a perfect middle ground between exuberant extroversion and carefully calibrated restraint. Of course, Vaz is no stranger to the world of minimal techno -- in his Background releases, he's been pushing the sound for years -- but his sound is rendered even more irresistible when wedded to Yore's sleek Detroit-edged vibe. Setting the EP's tone with an infectious, eight-minute journey, the A-side's 'Humanized' breezily moves through episodes of locomotive swing and jazzy technofunk. Having been tested live over the last three months, the flip side's 'You Got?' regularly incites 'hands-in-the-air' results when played during club dates. While a female singer repeatedly chants the mantra-like title, a disco-house strut grows around it, powered by classic '70s bass lines and horns; the tune's as funky as it gets, and oozes serious hit potential. "Rick Wade's second Yore 12", Night Tactics, offers four more polished samplings of classic funk-soul by the Michigan-born, Detroit house legend. The slamming disco groove in the opener 'Lostarts' provides a rock-solid base for a pumping bass line and Rhodes chords, while congas add Latin swing to the surging, string-laden techno of 'Theory of a Varice.' Ululating voices bring appropriately exotic flavor to 'World Voice' but it's the grooving pulse that stomps throughout that is its most beautiful detail. 'Vanguard Cinema' is the wild card here, a skanky shuffler chased by a reggae guitar riff that still manages to squeeze in hints of Wade's trademark warmth and soul. While clearly smooth and sleek, Wade's Night Tactics material is, above all else, masterful."

"With multiple releases on Background Records, ~scape, and Ghostly/Spectral already under his belt, Alan Abrahams (aka Bodycode and Portable) presents a fabulous fusion of ultra-deep house and Afro-futurism on his Yore debut A Document of an African Past. Abrahams sounds positively unleashed on the twelve-minute A-side, 'The Centre of Time,' which pushes the Bodycode sound farther than ever before. After opening with scattered flurries of African percussion, a warbling bass line emerges, asserting some degree of control, before a skipping pulse and voice yelps send the track on its way. Abrahams has shown himself in the past to be a master builder when it comes to weaving layers into intricate masses and does the same here, too. Halfway through the piece, a breakdown occurs, allowing percussion flourishes to re-appear, now accompanied by a voiceover, before the tune kicks into gear again even more ferociously for the ride home. Abrahams continues to amaze, regardless of whether the material appears under the Portable or Bodycode guise. Note: unfortunately, the title of the record got 'twisted' in the design process and, consequently, the label displays A Document of an American Past when it should be African."

On this strictly limited release, Andy Vaz teams up with Detroit's Alton Miller, revisiting his deep house cuts from his previous Different Times EP, here in extended vocal versions, with Miller singing layers on the hook. "Bygone Times" gets a choice reprise that intensifies into a steamy deep house treatment with Miller's multi-layered vocals. The bass-thrusting groove of "Hurry, Hurry" also gets another workout with Miller boosting the cut with his soulful croon. Vaz's music has never sounded more energized.

Full Circle distills the Yore credo with authentic, old-school house and techno. In "Time Waits," a bright flute glides over a swaying Latin-funk pulse spiced with congas, shakers and a soulful male voice. Driving tech-house rhythms anchor "Way of the Drum" and "Song for Beatriz" is an entrancing Latin-jazz swing. The rich material on Full Circle is overall the deepest you can find.

In fact, when the artist, DJ, and label head (Harmonie Park and Bass Force) sprinkles a little Chain Reaction dust over the funky handclapping swing of "Prime Expansion," Wade acknowledges a relatively recent style before shifting the spotlight back to his preferred territory. Wade naturally references techno and house but also pulls classic disco, smooth jazz, funk, and Philly soul into its expansive orbit. One hears traces of Barry White in the soulful strings that sometimes course through Wade's steaming tracks, Gamble and Huff in the sparkling arrangements, and The Crusaders' Joe Sample in the Rhodes flourishes that caress the grooves. Following an intro of soft chords, triangle, and congas, "Focus" achieves lift-off when the beats kick in, after which Wade sweetens the deal with twilight synth colors and silken strings. A smooth jazz spirit infuses "Xavi" with a feathery sax motif and a springy bass line buoying a sleek disco-funk pulse. "Hustler's Den" bridges three decades in a single gesture -- the cut's pounding stomp is overlaid by a see-sawing Rhodes motif and a '70s-styled bass slap, which are then joined by horn accents and a soaring string line. Wade's tracks are rich with detail but their essence is first and foremost groove. The Good, the Bad, and the Deep also features vocals on the last track by Marissa G. (Marissa Guzman).
