New Releases for December 2007

12K

Artist: AUTISTICI
Title: Volume Objects
Label: 12K
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: 12K 045CD
"In the desire to make recorded sound as tactile as possible Autistici (UK), recently featured on 12k's Blueprints compilation , has sculpted found objects, broken acoustic instruments, synthesizers and environmental recordings into Volume Objects. Expertly realized and designed, Volume Objects is loose and organic but demands careful listening. Melody and form are hinted at and then in a whisper, a crackle, are gone. A sense of narrative and place created as if a hundred tiny objects are scattered in front of you, a fractured story that you thought you once remembered."

A NUMBER OF SMALL THINGS (GERMANY)

Artist: SEABEAR
Title: Teenage Kicks
Label: A NUMBER OF SMALL THINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 7"
Price: $6.50
Catalog #: ANOST 014EP
Iceland's Seabear do a cover version of the punk rock classic, "Teenage Kicks," originally performed by The Undertones in the late '70s. Seabear made it a song with soft, sentimental and mellow tones, including a summery viola, a sparkling piano and the warm voice of Sindri. "Piano Hands" is a B-side session from their full-length debut, a silent tune with an abundance of sound.

Artist: SEAVAULT
Title: Mercy Seat
Label: A NUMBER OF SMALL THINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 7"
Price: $6.50
Catalog #: ANOST 015EP
Organic, electronic, melodic songs that shimmer with light and dark textures from the UK. Antony Ryan (ISAN) and Simon Scott (Televise/Slowdive) blend together a mixture of musical elements that stun and comfort. This musical partnership could be described as The Cure drinking with My Bloody Valentine drinking with The Postal Service drinking with Ulrich Schnauss.

Artist: BUTCHER THE BAR
Title: Get Away/Leave This Town
Label: A NUMBER OF SMALL THINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 7"
Price: $6.50
Catalog #: ANOST 017EP
Butcher The Bar is the 22 year-old Joel Nicholson, who currently resides in the north of England with his acoustic guitar and a couple of instruments such as a banjo, a melodica and an accordion. "Get Away" is a melancholy goodbye to a town, a disillusioned memory of a city that fades away while still living in it. "Leave Town" is as minimal and as maximal as a pop song could be: a guitar, a banjo and a warm voice.

ABUCUS (UK)

Artist: SCUBA
Title: Outmost
Label: ABUCUS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: ABUCS 004EP
"Limited white label. For the fourth 12" of Hotflush's offshoot imprint Abucus we have two new tracks from none other than Scuba himself. He once again challenges the boundaries of dubstep, starting with 'Outmost,' a 4/4 production that borders on crossing into the techno sphere. 'Beta' on the flipside maintains the mood with dazzling warm synths across a half-step structure."

ALLYOUCANBEAT (GERMANY)

Artist: TRIAL & ERROR
Title: Akihabara EP
Label: ALLYOUCANBEAT (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: AYCB 009EP
"The Akihabara EP is the debut of Trial & Error on AYCB. The Trial and Error principle describes a heuristic method to solve problems. A method of reaching a correct solution or satisfactory result by trying out various means or theories until error is sufficiently eradicated. Trial And Error devolved this method to their studio work, meaning they screw their analog boxes until it rocks! Akihabara 'the electric town' (Denkigai) is a town full of machines in the middle of Tokyo thus the paradise. That's why Trial & Error chose this name for their first EP. 'Sukiyaki' is an electronic hotpot out of Roland Tr 808, Arp Odyssey and Elektron Machinedrum. 'Tonkatsu' is a technoid 'schnitzel' out of Devilfish (TB 303 mod), with a bowl of Korg MS-20 and a Tr 808 & Machinedrum mixed salad. Et voilà, Bon appetit!"

AND/OAR

Artist: ONODERA, YUI
Title: Suisei
Label: AND/OAR
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: AND 028CD
"Suisei is a work composed from field recordings and pump organ. Edited and re-mastered by Dale Lloyd. With Suisei, each listener's inner cinema will find its camera lens slowly panning and cross-fading from one enigmatic location to another, as if unveiling ambiguous visual clues pertaining to some wondrous culminating event that many might not fully understand, yet it will still manage to leave an indelible impression upon the subconscious mind and a very subtle pull on the emotions. A mystery drone soundscape journey along the shores of an unfathomable glistening sea. Packaged in four-color digipak. Very limited at 300 copies."

ANTICIPATE

Artist: KLIMEK
Title: Dedications
Label: ANTICIPATE
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: ANTICIP 004CD
Sebastian Meissner of Frankfurt/Main, is a conceptual media artist, composer, sound designer and photographer, and this is his third full-length release under his Klimek alias, and his first for the Anticipate label. Klimek has been building up his reputation through a slew of releases and compilation appearances on Cologne's revered Kompakt -- an institution as much as a label. Always one to embrace change and a new challenge, Sebastian Meissner realized that the Anticipate label would be an ideal home for the follow-up to 2006's Music To Fall Asleep -- an album that cemented Meissner as one of the most interesting post-Eno composers of narcoleptic yet enthralling drift music. With Dedications, Meissner devotes each track to two of his musical idols, from Michael Gira to Steven Spielberg to Marvin Gaye. But these influences are not simply conglomerated and rehashed into a form of faux-originality; instead, they are distilled and deconstructed until only their purest elements remain. On "For Mark Hollis & Giacinto Scelsi," the opening chord of Hollis' "Colour of Spring," from his faultless self-titled album, is held in stasis to breaking point, exposing every beautiful nuance of what could be described as a "perfect" chord. This slowed-down perception of time is something that haunts all of Meissner's work as Klimek, when he is not busying himself under another of his many aliases including Bizz Circuits, Random Industries and Random_Inc. Rather than just focusing on an aesthetic beauty, upon listening it feels as if there is a greater purpose to this music -- perhaps it exists to remind the listener to slow down and focus on the finer details of their own life, perhaps it is simply a tool to relax the listener into contemplative sleep. Whatever its purpose, in its hazy soundscapes and muffled pianos, Dedications is music with a message.

ARF! ARF! RECORDS

Artist: LIGHTNING
Title: Lightning 1968-1971
Label: ARF! ARF! RECORDS
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: AA 100CD
"Lightning was an offshoot of Minneapolis '60s legends Litter that featured guitar wizard Tom 'Zippy' Caplan. After recording the Litter's 1966 garage classic Distortions and 1968 psych masterpiece $100 Fine, Caplan split from the Litter and formed Lightning. The band started out as a power trio and cut one fierce Cream-inspired single 'William' b/w 'Of Paupers And Poets' in 1968 under the White Lightning moniker with Twin Cities record producer Warren Kendrick. The band regrouped into a quintet and scored a record deal with P.I.P. which issued their eight-song album. That album has since become a highly collectable LP. Lightning became one of the Midwest's hardest working rock acts and toured extensively throughout the region during their three-year tenure. This authorized CD reissue includes their entire LP, the aforementioned 45, plus six additional bonus tracks (including edited 45 mixes of two album tracks) all wrapped in an archival 12-page booklet with lots of photos and liner notes by Litter-scribe Doug Sheppard. Between this package and Arf Arf's White Lightning Strikes Twice [1968-1969] release, the band's entire musical legacy has been properly archived. Fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix, and Arf Arf's four psychedelic Dose comps will really dig this new disc."
