LOCUST

Artist: CARBONARA, ERIC
Title: Exodus Bulldornadius
Label: LOCUST
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: LOCUST 104CD
"Exodus Bulldornadius is Philly multi-instrumentalist Eric Carbonara's contribution to Locust Music's ongoing Wooden Guitar series. Carbonara's playing draws on the rich musical styles from Andalusian Roma-Flamenco to Hindustani & North African folk to form a kind of exalted pidgin style of playing that covers a wide emotional terrain from meditative calm to restless unease."

LODUBS

Artist: SOUTH3RN
Title: Mangione Tribe Dub
Label: LODUBS
Format: 12"
Price: $7.00
Catalog #: LODUBS 7003EP
"We've been wanting to work with the mighty South3rn since practically prior to the label's inception, but as it is our policy not to bite off more than we could chew, we just kept the lips sealed. We waited for the right time and tunes, knowing there was genius down the chronological path a piece. 'La Rana' is the aesthetic antithesis of the 'Mangione Tribe Dub' which instead of the former's groundbreaking tribal affair is an otherwise unpredictable yet catchy number, laden with soulful Tubby-esque horns, very slight ska rhythm stabs, and a thick, articulate bass line that weaves the other elements into a bright, energetic work of soundsystem bliss."

LONG HAIR (GERMANY)

Artist: RUFUS ZUPHALL
Title: Weiss der Teufel
Label: LONG HAIR (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $24.00
Catalog #: LHC 029CD
Repressed! "The first album Weiss der Teufel (1971) has gradually gained legendary status and is definitely one of the best early 70īs album from Germany. All tracks were recorded live in the studio, resulting in a raw and unpolished sound. The side-long title track developed into a twisted and frenetic flute solo guiding the way on this trip. Some people regard this track as one of the finest moments of German rock. Weiss der Teufel sung in English, is typifying the raw-edged, largely instrumental early progressive hardrock. Here it comes with original album sleeve cover art, informative booklet in known Long Hair-tradition and with lots of bonus tracks (over 70 minutes ). A must, not just for Krautrock freaks."

Artist: DAUNER QUINTET, WOLFGANG
Title: The Oimels
Label: LONG HAIR (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: LHC 059CD
"Originally released in 1969 on the famous German MPS label The Oimels presented Dauner & co. in a very different setting, namely as a psychedelic pop band. Full of surprises, this collection even included a version of The Beatles' 'A Day In The Life' alongside twisted pop, beat and ethnic music. Over-the-top fuzz guitars, one primal punky stomper and sitar-drenched lounge freakouts are the order of the day. Truly superior stuff, especially the great guitar work from Siggi Schwab, who appears on Vampyros Lesbos, Roland Kovac Set and numerous MPS label releases. An outstanding album!"

Artist: MURDER IN THE CATHEDRAL
Title: Afraid Of
Label: LONG HAIR (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: LHC 060CD
"Amazingly underrated French neo-psychedelic band. Arisen from the ashes of The Heretic Dreams, Murder in the Cathedral was founded in the beginning of the '90s by brothers Stephane (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Pascal Moru (bass, keyboards) and drummer Gilles Lepron. Influenced by new groups like Plasticland, Prisoners, and in the tradition of 13th Floor Elevators, Chocolate Watchband or Plastic Cloud, the boys tried to create their own sound. Their first eponymous album (included as a bonus album on this CD), released in 1996, shows a mixture of guitar-oriented neo-psych in the vein of Plastic Cloud, Morgen and Grateful Dead. It consists of 8 titles, instrumental pieces alternating with vocal ones (sung in English). It was very positively received in the neo-psychedelic underground and the limited edition of 500 was sold out within a few months. 2nd album Afraid Of... saw the light of day in 1999. Now the music is much more structured and contains less jam-like passages. According to the reviewers, the crucial sound influences range from The Byrds to Bevis Frond, combining the San Francisco acid sound of the '60s with Oriental sounds. Again the album (limited edition of 500) was sold out within a few months. Although Long Hair is specialized in psychedelic/progressive music of the '60s and early '70s, we would like to present all lovers of psychedelic music this outstanding band. All titles are digitally remastered from original tapes. Booklet comes with extensive personal liner notes by guitar player and singer Stephane Moru including rare and unseen photos."

MAXERNST (GERMANY)

Artist: FISHER, NATE
Title: DoNotEatOnLSD
Label: MAXERNST (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: MAXE 022EP
This is the first release for newcomer Nate Fisher on Max Ernst, written and produced by T.B. (not necessarily Thomas Brinkmann!). Fisher works together with musicians like Alex Under and Brinkmann to create warm, minimal-tech dance that doesn't compromise. The A-side is a humorous tribute to Japan and it makes people dance like crazy. The B-side has some dark 'n' wacky techno. A MUST for the dancefloor.

MBSELEKTIONS (BELGIUM)

Artist: BAILEY, MARCO
Title: Wahnsin
Label: MBSELEKTIONS (BELGIUM)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: MBSELEK 014EP
This is Marco Bailey on his more minimal techno-oriented MbSelektions imprint. "Wahnsin" is a crate-saver, and don't forget Danilo Vigorito's remix on the flip... a fucking blinder.

MEANWHILE (UK)

Artist: MURMUR
Title: Undertone
Label: MEANWHILE (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $14.50
Catalog #: MEAN 009CD
2007 has been a year defined by the imperceptible merging of dub and techno, and the UK's Murmur land with a debut album sure to connect on every level of this musical and cultural phenomenon. The submerged hip-hop-tinged swaying of "Pansula" starts off proceedings in fine form, bringing to mind Detroit at its best, but before long, the album is whisked onto a plane, flown half way around the world and dropped straight into the heart of Berlin, where this detailed and glorious sound design really belongs. "Mesh" could almost be the sound of a synth factory being flooded; every echo dissipating into layers of murky liquid, never to be found again. By the fourth track, "Flex," the water has settled and the soiled, grey walls of a warehouse loom over an after-after-party dancefloor where tired feet are revitalized and rejuvenated until the crowd throbs in unison. As "Bloodclot" trickles from your speakers and into the inner coils of your ears, comparisons to Basic Channel are inevitable. But this isn't some idle rehash of the past -- Murmur belong to a new breed of techno connoisseurs, leading the way with other less-is-more pioneers: think fondly of recent amazing output from the DeepChord axis, Scion Versions or the Styrax family -- artists such as Redshape, Sven Weisemann or Quantec, all showing increasing empathy with the Murmur sound. There's a massive emotional pull in this music, nestled between an obsessive love of analog hardware and an intuitive knowledge of what can make a track work both on the floor and as a repeat soundtrack to many a late-night headphone session. As all around us, "dance" artists are making steps into album territory with varying degrees of success, Murmur (and Meanwhile) show how it should be done. With Undertone, Christmas comes early for the dub-techno faithful.

MEGAPHONE

Artist: SEJAYNO
Title: Laity
Label: MEGAPHONE
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MEGA 023CD
"Sejayno invites you to go skinny dipping with them in the middle of the night. The river will take you to a murky lake in a canyon with an undercurrent that will suck you down to an underwater cave where you will be taken in by a primitive magical tribe of Italians that will chant 'a-hay! a-hay! a-hay!' & perform for you with their invented electronic instruments while you are fed hallucinogenic cave mushrooms that fill your head with images of ruined cities, cavernous horn solos & radio transmissions of Civil War soldier bands. Peter Blasser (Baltimore, MD) Severiano Martinez (Oakland, CA) & Carson Garhart (Baltimore, MD). Peter Blasser, also known as Peter B, invents & hand constructs electronic instruments that stretch the possibilities of what an electronic instrument can be."

MEGAPHONE UNLIMITED

Artist: VA
Title: Music DeWolfe Volume 1
Label: MEGAPHONE UNLIMITED
Format: 2LP
Price: $16.00
Catalog #: MEGAU 001LP
Double vinyl version. "Fifteen slices of late '60s & early '70s instrumental soul from the library of DeWolfe music compiled by DJ Jason Willett. Hard hitting grooves & otherworldly funk from swinging London featuring legendary composers Nick Ingman, Alan Parker, Keith Papworth and many more. The DeWolfe Music Library (aka Music DeWolfe) was started in 1909 by Meyer DeWolfe to provide musical scores for silent movies, but as the decades passed the library quickly established a reputation for production music for both TV and radio. In the '70s, DeWolfe demonstrated their uniqueness from their rivals by employing a number of young and enthusiastic British composers, true musical innovators of their time, who all possessed the creativity and ability to experiment with new studio techniques and electronic instruments. Not surprisingly, music from the De Wolfe vaults has produced ample fodder for DJs, providing funky breaks, wailing horns, groovy strings and the like to many a hip-hop track or club mix. Baltimore's Jason Willett put together this thoroughly enjoyable collection of DeWolfe instrumental funk classics from the '60s and '70s. From the opening salvo of bongoes and driving bass on Keith Papworth's 'Hard Hitter' to the screaming horns that close out P. Kass' 'Sweet Destruction,' Music De Wolfe Volume 1 is a relentless mix of driving beats, joyously swinging jazz, and cinematic funk."

MESSTHETICS

Artist: VA
Title: Messthetics #105 D.I.Y. 77-81 Scotland I
Label: MESSTHETICS
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: MSS 105CD
"D.I.Y. and (very) indie post-punk from Scotland, '77-'81. Messthetics' first Scottish installment focuses on a brief, intense scene of ardently independent bands who got started rubbing shoulders with 1977 punk then paid no attention at all to London after that. (London returned the favor.) The sound was based on guitars of all sorts, ingeniously skewed melodies and unashamed local accents. Naturally, it all fell apart as soon as 'The Sound of Young Scotland' became a marketable commodity, but they left behind a rich cache of lost 'alternative' hits. Plenty of 'traditional' D.I.Y., too... 24 songs on the CD plus nine bonus MP3 tracks. 90 minutes of music. 24-page booklet, lovingly documented with histories & photos galore. Messthetics #105 features rarities by Fire Engines, Scrotum Poles, 35mm Dreams, The Exile, Commercials, Fakes, Metropak, Tony Pilley, Visitors, Article 58, Radio Ghosts, Rapid Dance, Strutz, Vertical Smiles, Restricted Code, Brills, Rhythm Method, He's Dead Jim, Friction and Paul Reekie. Unreleased first recordings by Dirty Reds [who became the Fire Engines], 35mm Dreams, Jazzateers, International Spys [pre-Radio Ghosts, Wee Cherubs, Bachelor Pad] and Edinburgh's legendary Ettes. Plus other never-before-released material from the Scrotum Poles, Commercials, Tony Pilley, Article 58, Radio Ghosts, Vertical Smiles, and Restricted Code..."
