BLAST FIRST PETITE (UK)
Artist:
SLITS, THE
Title:
The Return of the Giant Slits
Label:
BLAST FIRST PETITE (UK)
Format:
2CD
Price:
$27.50
Catalog #:
PTYT 008CD
The full, original 1981
Return of the Giant Slits
album + a bonus CD that features ALL the archived dub versions and an American radio interview conducted at the time that was subsequently used by CBS for an ultra-rare promo disc. Including new cover art and two of the classic photos by
Anton Corbijn
from the
NME
magazine cover session. The 1981 second and final
Slits
studio album features the same line-up as their first album,
Cut
:
Ari Up
,
Tessa Pollit
and
Viv Albertine
. This record has often been overshadowed by their more controversial 1979 debut. It represents their natural development as artistes by focusing more on their interests in dub and "world music" sound eclecticism (featuring
Steve Beresford
and ex-
Pop Group
drummer,
Bruce Smith
) that is well suited to their, by then, more accomplished playing style. Perhaps, in retrospect, the Jamaican half-sister to
The Raincoats
recordings. A "lost" gem, ripe for reappraisal, of this still vastly influential and important group, in both musical and sociological terms. Produced by
Dennis Bovell
and
Dick O'Dell
(Y Records). Previously only available as an expensive Japanese import and never before released in the USA.
BO WEAVIL RECORDINGS (UK)
Artist:
BROTZMANN/WILKINSON QUARTET
Title:
One Night In Burmantofts
Label:
BO WEAVIL RECORDINGS (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$17.00
Catalog #:
WEAVIL 027CD
A long overdue meeting of two of the titans of the saxophone.
Alan Wilkinson
(alto, baritone & voice) and
Peter Brötzmann
(clarinet, tarogato & tenor) together with
Willi Kellers
(drums) and
Simon H. Fell
(bass) blow up one hell of a storm. The individuals on this recording consciously commit, putting themselves "out there," over the edge. The energy and electricity generated by saxophonists Wilkinson and Brötzmann, is a result of their fearless approach to the precipice and their willingness to stare, unblinking, into the abyss. And yet while this music (free jazz, improv, call it what you will) exists at the boundary of our cultural existence, it echoes the sounds first identified as jazz, back at the birth pangs of the modern age. It is the commitment to a collective sound devoid of ego with the fearless individual that makes this music extraordinary and provides moments of almost spiritual communion.
BOXON RECORDS (FRANCE)
Artist:
DELUXX/JULIEN MILAN, TOM
Title:
Drama Queen
Label:
BOXON RECORDS (FRANCE)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
BOXON 001EP
"First release on this label from South of France, clearly influenced by the Ed Banger/Institubes sound. Tom Deluxx and Julien Milan put out this 4-tracker aiming straight for the dancefloors in this typical electro-hypish vein that has been taking the club world by storm lately."
CADENZA (GERMANY)
Artist:
LUCIANO
Title:
Cadenza Contemporary 01 & Classics
Label:
CADENZA (GERMANY)
Format:
2CD
Price:
$20.00
Catalog #:
CADENZA 002CD
For its first-ever CD edition, Cadenza prepares something truly special. Spread across two CDs,
Cadenza Contemporary 01 & Classics
is a distillation of the label's essence -- not just an overview of its past, but also a teasing suggestion of what lies ahead. The first CD, mixed by Swiss producer
Luciano
, digs its fingers into the label's six most recent records -- plus Luciano's own "Tonerres," from the lone
Cadenza Split Composition
release so far -- and teases out a single thread, which it rolls lovingly between its fingertips. The mix could have taken any number of different directions, but Luciano's mix takes the snakiest path possible, beginning with the blippy, aquamarine-colored house of
Argenis Brito
and
Digitaline
before taking a detour through
Petre Inspirescu
's sideshow psychedelia. When things get a little noir, he opens the slats on
Andomat 3000 & Jan
's clattery Venetian blinds, making way for
Rhadoo
's percussive, mid-day reverie, all swirling dust motes and forgotten clocks ticking in the distance.
Alejandro Vivanco
brings a momentary wake-up call with his rubbery bass wallop, and then irreality descends again courtesy of Luciano and
Pikaya
, delivering two of the deepest, most gravity-free tracks in Cadenza's catalog. The second CD highlights Cadenza's early years with a selection of classics culled from the label's first six releases, all of them appearing for the first time on an unmixed CD. Luciano &
Quenum
lead off with the rightfully anthemic "Orange Mistake," and Luciano &
Pier Bucci
follow up with the liquid Latin ripple of "Amael." Quenum &
Lee Van Dowski
's "Extension" is as kinetic as anything the label's ever done, a hall of mirrors and circuit boards, while Luciano &
Serafin
's "Funk Excursion" goes straight for the gut -- no need to bring your own funk, it's here in plentiful supply.
N.S.I.
's "Max Binski" remains at the frontier of Cadenza's outer limits: channeling free-jazz piano into an anxious, bass-heavy groove -- one of electronic music's strongest tracks of the last half-decade. Finally, Luciano closes the disc out with "Bomberos," one of Cadenza's earliest hits and a shining example of his way with a supple, slippery groove. Beautifully packaged in Cadenza's characteristically sumptuous designs,
Cadenza Contemporary 01
is a milestone for one of electronic music's most important labels, and a tangible time-capsule to collect and keep.
CAPITOL
Artist:
AXELROD, DAVID
Title:
Songs of Experience
Label:
CAPITOL
Format:
LP
Price:
$11.00
Catalog #:
SKAO 338LP
Exact repro including gatefold, originally released on Capitol Records in 1969. One of Axelrod's best and most loved LPs, including classic front and back cover artwork, featuring a shirtless Axelrod as brooding genius ominously overlooking sultry blonde goddess. Musically the album contains some of Axelrod's best trademark complex and moody studio arrangements, this time around based on the poems of William Blake.
Artist:
COMMON PEOPLE, THE
Title:
Of The People/By The People/For The People
Label:
CAPITOL
Format:
LP
Price:
$14.00
Catalog #:
ST 266HLP
Grey area exact repro, 180 gram virgin vinyl pressing. Originally released in 1969 on Capitol; CD version is currently on Fallout. Well-loved major label psych LP with somewhat of a split personality. The sound varies between a unique brooding downer vibe with Axelrod-like string arrangements, and a more typical West Coast garage-psych trip (plus an unfortunate bit of musical theater).

CHESTPLATE (UK)
Artist:
DISTANCE
Title:
Battle Sequence/Feel Me
Label:
CHESTPLATE (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.50
Catalog #:
CHST 002EP
"Chestplate follows up the success of its first release with another double A-side from label boss, DJ and producer, Distance. Distance was inundated with requests for certain tracks to be released on Chestplate and it is impossible that 'Feel Me' and 'Battle Sequence' will disappoint. The release is an essential addition to the boxes of any discerning Dubstep fan or DJ. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the dubstep sound as we know it today. With Chestplate, he intends to showcase the freshest of his own productions which have been devastating dances and flooring radio listeners over the recent months. The two tracks featured on the release have been firm favorites in his live sets and on his Rinse FM show, garnering major support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Hatcha, Pinch, Chef and Cyrus along the way. 'Battle Sequence' sees Distance exercising his darker side. It is a metallic stomper with lethally programmed precision percussion, full of low-end gnarl and stray feedback squeals. On the flip, 'Feel Me' reflects Distance's lighter side. With a suggestive female vocal sample and motorik drum patterns, the track skips along amidst ring modulated synths and subtle low slung, pulsating bass."
CICADELIC RECORDS
Artist:
BLUETHINGS, THE
Title:
Blow Your Mind (1964-1967)
Label:
CICADELIC RECORDS
Format:
2CD
Price:
$25.00
Catalog #:
CIC 052CD
"2CD set with career-spanning 65 tracks. Previously unreleased recordings and stunning sound! A 24-page booklet details the complete career of the band and is rich in photos and recollections." "I remember going to see The Bluethings several times in the '60s in McCook, Nebraska and talking with Richard Scott as he sat on the edge of the stage during breaks. I was only 13 the first time I saw them and was knocked out by their sound. Scott was always tinkering with his Fender tube amps and played bass both right and left-handed during the same song! Mike Chapman had a Dan Electro Longhorn guitar one time and the first fuzz tone I ever heard. Bobby Day was a great drummer. Val Stecklein's voice was unforgettable. He played a Guild Bluesbird guitar and I think was a legend even back then. The Bluethings were outstanding, head and shoulders above all the other Midwest bands of that time." --A Bluethings fan.
