FLASH RECORDINGS (GERMANY)

Artist: PAWAS
Title: Never Met Them EP
Label: FLASH RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FLASH 006EP
"Pawas is now back with his very own three-track EP on the label of Koletzki & Meindl. All tracks were created in Pune in India, Pawas' hometown, and the EP is about three different characters: Alicia, Charlie and Edward. Each one of them has a certain distinctive vibe about them: 'Alicia' is deep and eloquent; 'Edward' is more hectic and restless while 'Charlie' seems the funky and witty sort. In terms of music, 'Edward' is carried on a powerful, deep synthie melody, a big breathing bass line and some great percussive clicks and clacks that turn into a slightly ravey minimal burner later on in the tune. Very hot! 'Charlie' is a little lighter and is pushed forward by a great funky melody that creates the perfect after hour moment. Imagine yourself on the beach when the sun is coming up. 'Alicia' on the A-side is a deeper, more housey affair and has a melodic, percussive and Detroity appeal. Pawas has managed to create a very fresh and unique signature sound and with releases on Squonk, Connaisseur and Flash Records, 2007 seems to be the year for him."

FOUNDSOUND

Artist: SOMEONE ELSE
Title: Pen Caps Remixed
Label: FOUNDSOUND
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FOUND 017EP
Following up the Pen Caps and Colored Pencils full-length album by Someone Else, this is Pen Caps Remixed, featuring album tracks remixed by Losoul, Barem and Easy Changes. Barem reworks the funky, stripped-down minimal tune into a crafty, groovy, Kraftwerk-y electro-ditty. Easy Changes turn it into a bouncy dancefloor-burner with a psychedelic sound-play. Losoul revamps it into a quirky, swingy, nine-minute long-play with a touch of Matthew Herbert-esque dexterity. Remixes are fun!

FULL PUPP (NORWAY)

Artist: YTRE RYMDEN DANSSKOLA
Title: Kjappfot
Label: FULL PUPP (NORWAY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: FP 011EP
"This is yet another newcomer hailing from the remote region of Telemark. As a taster for a forthcoming album (and solo 12"s by both these guys) this time around, it's the pairing of Prins Thomas' long-time friend Marius Våreid and his partner Jarle Bråthen who steps into the light. No need to say much about this but we might be sitting on the most anticipated Full Pupp in a while. When head honcho Prins Thomas dropped this on his and Lindstrøm's recent Essential Mix, it caused a bursting inbox with requests about release date. A nice little low-slung house track with just a sprinkling of disco. Just like we like it. In a perfect world, this would be a universal floor filler, with its cute little brass hook and smooth pads."

GLUCKSKIND SCHALLPL. (GERMANY)

Artist: BERRY, SHANE
Title: The Scrawlys EP
Label: GLUCKSKIND SCHALLPL. (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: GLK 005EP
"Shane Berry was born in South Africa and presently lives in Japan's capital, Tokyo. There he creates his tracks, all of which go directly from the ears to the legs. He released an EP on Trapez and tracks on the New York label Synewave. His songs are played and charted by numerous DJs, and colleagues such as Richie Hawtin and Dominik Eulberg hold Berry's work in high esteem. The new EP on Glückskind might also please them. Again Shane takes two bass lines and twists the sounds for several minutes through an electronic meat grinder. Over the kick, it pulsates and holds it all together perfectly. 'Scrawlys' is refined, reduced minimal techno. 'Deep Space' goes a bit deeper, techno-wise. Indeed, there is also a dominating bass loop, but the insertion of reverb and delay leaves the track with far more room to breathe."

GREAT STUFF RECORDS (GERMANY)

Artist: NICOLETTE
Title: No Government
Label: GREAT STUFF RECORDS (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: GSR 056EP
"No. 4 in the famous Great Stuff Roots Edition, this time from one of the legendary voices of UK club culture: Nicolette, also known as 'Billie Holiday on acid.' She was not only inventing drum & bass with the project Shut Up And Dance, but she also did two of the most famous songs on the groundbreaking Massive Attack album Protection. Then Nicolette met Gilles Peterson and he signed her to his label and released No Government which became one of the most beautiful Talkin' Loud releases. So Great Stuff is very proud of this classic, which got the ultimate remix treatment by the king of remixers, Tocadisco and by Vienna's G-Stone artists and hot upcoming producer and DJ duo Makossa & Megablast."

HAPNA (SWEDEN)

Artist: TENNISCOATS
Title: Tan-Tan Therapy
Label: HAPNA (SWEDEN)
Format: CD
Price: $15.00
Catalog #: HAPNA 037CD
This is the seventh release for Tenniscoats, the Tokyo area-based husband and wife team of Saya and Takashi Ueno, and their first for the Häpna label. They are also members of the Japanese music collective Maher Shalal Hash Baz. On Tan-Tan Therapy, they distill the experiences of the last two years, when Tenniscoats and Tape (Andreas and Johan Berthling, Tomas Hallonsten) have socialized, toured together and exchanged musical ideas. The album gives a slightly new picture of Tenniscoats. Found here is a fuller dynamic spectrum and richer use of diverse sound elements that are usually found in their live shows. Yet the album has a concise pop feeling to it, in a calm and multi-faceted way. The level of detail and the different sound world is, to a large extent, due to the musicians of Tape, as they have been involved both in the production and arrangement of the record. To Tenniscoats' original setting, various horn instruments, double bass, zither, organ, glockenspiel and electronic instruments have been added. The recordings were intuitively constructed during a couple of days in Stockholm and Cologne with Tape, Andreas Söderström, Leo Svensson, Lars Skoglund and others. Johan Berthling describes the record as such: "Their starting point is pop songs, but with a staggeringly free approach: psychedelic folk tunes, complex instrumentals and short pop jewels side by side, everything is possible. A song can be performed in a myriad ways. Their interplay is angular and at the same time the most sensitive one has heard. A feeling of a music that constantly goes on, whether Saya and Ueno are on stage or not. A music free of pretensions, but urgent as few things I have heard."

HELEN SCARSDALE AGENCY

Artist: MURMER
Title: We Share A Shadow
Label: HELEN SCARSDALE AGENCY
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: HMS 011CD
"Murmer is the pseudonym for Patrick McGinley, a man with several passports which have taken him to many a foreign land in search of found sounds of the unsettled, the forgotten, the mysterious, and the beautiful. His field recordings of activated environments (e.g. resonant industrial spaces, windswept telephone lines, bowed branches, gasping ventilator systems, etc.) originate from all of the locations where he has traveled; yet, the documentation of these sounds is not the terminus of McGinley's work. He is far more interested in extracting a particular emotional, transcendent, or metaphysical kernel from those sounds, and then recontextualizing that germinated sound into sympathetic compositions of magnificent dronemusik. We Share A Shadow continues where Murmer left off with the exceptional Husk album (in collaboration with Jonathan Coleclough), in spiraling his manipulated field recordings as a slow revelation of the environmental sonorities that undeservedly go unnoticed each and every day. Singing frequencies of a bowed piece of metal undulate against a grey tapestry of rain and rasping insects. Golden overtones from shimmering drones quell what agitated textures reside in McGinley's active field recordings, rendering the aggregate sound a nocturnal opiate with considerable potency. As Murmer, Patrick McGinley has produced a handful of releases on ICR, Ground Fault, Drone Records, and Absurd. We Share A Shadow is strictly limited to 300 copies, featuring hand water-colored artwork and letterpress printing."

HIGHGRADE (GERMANY)

Artist: COLLINS, ANTHONY
Title: Cannibale
Label: HIGHGRADE (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: HIGH 044EP
"A new guest artist signing for Highgrade, Antony Collins, one of France's upcoming stars in the minimal/deep house scene comes up with his Cannibale EP for Highgrade. After some successful releases on various European labels, such as Darkroom Dubs (Soma Sublabel), Miniscetch or Get Physical, to name a few, Antony chose a real man-eater track for his Highgrade debut -- 'Cannibale' is a glittering, long and deep journey into the heart of modern deep-house. Tom Clark and Daniel Dreier as remixers tear up all the meat from the track giving it a typical Berlin-style treatment resulting in a dry and hypnotic groove (for those who know). Last but not least, Antony's 'BlaBlaBla,' a euphoric and deep bow towards early tech-house (nu groove, etc.) sums up this perfect debut."

HONEST JON'S RECORDS (UK)

Artist: ALLEN, TONY
Title: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble/Salah Ragab Reworks
Label: HONEST JON'S RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: HJP 041EP
"When The Hypnotics handed over this monster, they mentioned something about its 'Egyptian' vibe, so -- on top of the fact that a couple of them are sons of Ra trumpeter Phil Cohran -- it seemed apposite to couple it with new recordings made for us in Cairo by space jazz luminary Salah Ragab, who once himself recorded and toured with the Arkestra. The shimmering, burnished, refined funk of Sankofa takes Tony Allen's 'Losun' for its departure point; the Cairo side is a burning basement session in the Ra big-band tradition, full of life and living, heavy on the percussion and choca with fine solos."

HOSPITAL PRODUCTIONS

Artist: DRUMM, KEVIN/PRURIENT
Title: All Are Guests In The House Of The Lord
Label: HOSPITAL PRODUCTIONS
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: HOS 201CD
"All Are Guests In the House of the Lord is the first collaboration between Prurient and Kevin Drumm. Both artists are regarded as singular stylistic entities in their own right. Kevin Drumm is known equally from his more improvised work with Jim O'Rourke and Taku Sugimoto as well as being a mainstay in the Chicago noise world with releases like Sheer Hellish Miasma on the Mego label. Prurient has been toiling in the fields of noise for over a decade and has developed an increasingly dynamic output incorporating darkly arranged synths. Their cumulative work displayed here is both unexpected and focused. Using source sounds of intense tonal drones supplied by Drumm, the two create a haunted atmosphere that is far removed from noise, exploring minimal junctures, using field recording and clean patient vocals to lead the way. All Are Guests In the House Of The Lord is among the darkest record in either artist's catalog. The subtle textures of the electronics combined with near-cinematic arrangements make for a record that is engaging and consistent in mood of tension."

HOTFLUSH (UK)

Artist: BOXCUTTER
Title: Philly/Endothermic
Label: HOTFLUSH (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: HF 018EP
"Boxcutter makes the kind of weighty productions that share the broad appeal of Burial or Vex'd, while keeping one foot firmly planted in the more melodic, electro-centered margins of the genre. Packed with gritty bass, glitched-up beats and all manner of multi-layered furies, he first roused the dubstep community's appetite in 2005 with 12"s on Hotflush and Planet Mu. A true heavyweight of the scene, the incredibly inventive and original Boxcutter sound continues to defy expectations. For the latest Hotflush 12", Boxcutter delivers yet again two fantastic tracks from his array of sounds. On the A-side is 'Philly,' a jazzier number with a syncopated assault of crisp drums, as featured on Hotflush's compilation CD Space and Time. It is backed with 'Endothermic,' a tune drifting more on the laid-back side, with dazzling warm synths and a deep bass line."

Artist: NYABINGI
Title: Bionicle
Label: HOTFLUSH (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: HFT 001EP
"Rising from the ashes of Hotflush's now discontinued side label Scuba, comes the first release on a renewed imprint, Hotflush Two. It presents two new tracks produced by Nyabingi, aka Vicious MC of London's Slaughter Mob. Rough, metallic synths permeate through 'Bionicle,' while in 'Shamanu (Japanese Wolf)' the sharply sequenced drum patterns remain, yet with a deeper bass line and strangely wonky scratch samples, more reminiscent of his previous Hotflush release, Belgium Chocolate/Cannibal Run."
