New Releases for October 2007

Artist: SHANKAR AND HIS ORCHESTRA, ANANDA
Title: 2001
Label: FALLOUT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FO 2063CD
Originally released in 1984, this futuristic funk classic fuses the musical traditions of Ananda Shankar's homeland with a solid dose of rock and roll, featuring dancefloor killers such as the Bollywood-influenced "Explorations" and break-laden "The Alien," alongside mellower cuts like the title track and "Flights Of Fantasy." Originally released in India only, it makes its CD debut here, complete with biographical liner notes, and is sure to satisfy all fans of sitar-driven psychedelic funk.

Artist: MORNING GLORY
Title: Two Suns Worth
Label: FALLOUT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FO 2066CD
This overlooked acid pop treat has been compared to albums by Jefferson Airplane and The Mamas and the Papas, though it's less experimental than the former and more psychedelic than the latter. Originally released in May 1968, it was engineered by John Cale (fresh from The Velvet Underground) and produced by Abe "Voco" Kesh (familiar to psych fans for his work with Blue Cheer, Savage Resurrection and others). A solid collection of West Coast hippie rock featuring the hypnotic psych classic, "Jelly Gas Flame," it makes its long-overdue CD debut here.

Artist: BLUE MOUNTAIN EAGLE
Title: Blue Mountain Eagle
Label: FALLOUT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $15.50
Catalog #: FO 2080CD
This superb collection of acid-influenced guitar rock originally appeared in 1970 and has languished in under-served obscurity ever since. Produced in L.A. by legendary engineer Bill Halverson (Crosby, Stills & Nash, Cream, the Grateful Dead), it's heavily imbued with West Coast influences and features superb musical interplay throughout. The band supported acts including Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, but proved sadly short-lived. The album makes its long-awaited CD debut here, complete with both mixes of their sole non-LP 45, making it an obligatory purchase for all devotees of U.S. psychedelia.

FEAR OF FLYING (UK)

Artist: SCSI-9
Title: Kroy Menya V Pol Bita
Label: FEAR OF FLYING (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FOF 006EP
"'Kroy Menya' had been in our record boxes since it first appeared on SCSI-9's excellent and highly-acclaimed Digital Russian LP back in 2003. Liking it as much as we did we though it'd be rather nice to give it a leg up into the year 2007 with a nice lil' remix package. So firstly we employed the services of Moon Harbour starlets and all round good uns' Luna City Express to give it a rub-down in the form of their 'Lovely Luna People' remix. Starting with hints of the original melody and vocal line, it then drops into a deep rolling b-line, giving it a nice chuggy feel before slowly raking up the tension with an intense, twisting synth line. Flip for the original mix. Typically SCSI-9 in feel, it just grooves along in a melancholy way with subtle melodies and the vocal line which gives the track its title. Finally, we asked the provider of our last release, Pawas, if he could do the remix honors. Staying much truer to the feel of the original track, he sets about giving it a subtler feel with a funked-up clave to provide the all-important groove before dropping into a synth-laden break."

FIRE MUSEUM

Artist: KEIJO
Title: Whose Dream We Live In?
Label: FIRE MUSEUM
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: FM 011CD
"Finland's master of psychfolkdroneblues music emerges with what may well be his most engaging release yet! Considered by many to be the forefather of the much lauded Finnish musical underground, Whose Dream We Live In? serves as Keijo's sonic calling card -- bringing together many of the diverse elements that his music has been celebrated for into a joyous whole. From blues (by way of Jyväskylä) meditations to spaceship lullabies to psychedelic rave ups and beyond, Keijo has opened the door into his musical universe for all to enter. Don't miss your chance, accept his invitation or it's your loss, friend. For the most part a solo outing (although he is assisted by Leila on four of the eleven tracks here) Whose Dream We Live In? assuredly answers the question it poses. For the duration of the disc, enjoy living in the dream that Keijo has conjured up for you. We will not be held liable if, upon awakening, your world never looks the same again."

Artist: COMET III
Title: Astral Voyager
Label: FIRE MUSEUM
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: FM 012CD
"Look, over there! Has the kosmiche spacecraft graced us with its presence and touched down in Siracusa, Italy? Concluding such may be understandable at first, but this recently formed duo has so much more to offer than recalling a yesteryear that never was. Delfo Catania (guitar, percussion, etc.) and Carlo Matanza (synthesizers) have spent their time in ancient Sicily honing their vision while never losing sight of the reverie that is the impetus of this voyage. With brief cameos by Shirin Demma (providing vocals on 'Part 1') and Caetano Firlito (adding some saxophonic shading to 'Part 2'), Comet III are poised to lead you on a journey to the beyond."

FIRM (GERMANY)

Artist: CLARK, ERIC D.
Title: E=dC2
Label: FIRM (GERMANY)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FIRM 003CD
"Eric D. Clark has been DJing house music for the past 20 years and his recent Whirlpool Production success with From: Disco to: Disco has established his reputation worldwide. Eric finished his album a few months ago. He's just been waiting for the right label with the right guys behind it: FIRM. His new album has 14 new tracks, mostly produced by Eric working on his own, but some in association with Tyree Cooper (The Producer!) or with his brother who lives in Sacramento, CA. Most albums are recorded in one particular sound studio. Not so with Eric D. Clark, though. He has sat down at his mobile studio in various locations around the globe, from Moscow to L.A., and at various times, between gigs and after hours. In fact, whenever the muse caressed him. Thanks to numerous collaborations with a wide range of artists (incl. Angie Reed, Lady Miss Kier, Sex in Dallas) his horizons extend well beyond techno and dancefloor. These special influences together with his spontaneous approach to production mean that this album isn't always easy listening but it is certainly unique, assured and inspirational fare."

FIST O' DUB RECORDS (UK)

Artist: FISTO
Title: Crusher/Generation Dub
Label: FIST O' DUB RECORDS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FISTODUB 001EP
"Two heavy tunes from anonymous newcomer Fisto. All we know is he has a large mechanical fist and he was last seen on television in the 1980s. He is now on the buttons and making tunes are thicker than his red beard. Look out!"

FLOPPY FUNK (GERMANY)

Artist: DONK BOYS
Title: Sing Along With
Label: FLOPPY FUNK (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FLOPPY 013EP
"Hot on the heels of their debut EP for Frankie (Cpstyre), the Swedish newcomers Donk Boys aka Thomas Jaldemark and Martin Abrahamsson presents four new hot trax for your favorite label Floppy Funk! 'Mongoponny' shoots off this parade of sing along hits with its haunting rhythm and damaged, yet addictive, rubber-like melody, complete with a low-pitched YEAH sample, it's almost like a soundclash of Claude vonStroke vs M_nus on horse... mental that is. For the sick floors that just can't get enough! Next up is 'Zonky': almost tripping over itself with the booming sub bass, wet blops and suggestive melodic elements, this one should do the trick if you're into more minimal sounds. Moody, but still crazy funky! Flip to B-side for trunkfunk with 'Elephant': starting off with a steady shuffled beat and crisp percussion combined with warped vocal snippets, this one does not wait for anyone! Jumping straight into the mix with the pop-like lead melody, again extremely addictive, like an elephant needing to score a fix from the dealer pig. Not for the faint-hearted! Full on zoo disco action -- video game style! The finishing track is 'Gump Nymix': bringing in the old skool elements of Joey Beltram (Game Form-era), Neil Landstrumm (circa Praline Horse) and Sweden's finest Börft Records, this wonky bit is in its own way the most deranged of the four. Stripped, distorted drums (aah the RZ-1 hihat!) plus a really really stupid bassline that just keeps on going and going and going like a circuit-bent children's toy."

FOUR:TWENTY (UK)

Artist: MOWBRAY & LEIAM SULLIVAN, JAMES
Title: Tropical Heights
Label: FOUR:TWENTY (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FOUR 034EP
"One of the strongest Four:Twenty releases so far. 'Absolutely wicked' -- says Claude VonStroke. The warm, deep and epic original speaks of new hope for a slowly dying earth over immense sub-bass frequencies. Ink & Needle give up hope and show how the end of the world will sound if you don't listen to the message on side A."

FRANKIE RECORDS (FRANCE)

Artist: KONDO, KEISUKE
Title: Joyride EP
Label: FRANKIE RECORDS (FRANCE)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FRANKIE 025EP
"For this 25th release we're very pleased to have Keisuke Kondo on board with his original approach to the micro house genre, mixing complex structures with weird elements, sometimes darker and deeper and at the same time, keeping an amazing funky side. We start this 4 tracker titled Joyride EP by A1 -- my bike gives a typical example of keisuke style with a heady bleep melody and a combination of many elements sometimes spacy, sometimes raw -- so unpredictable and always funky... following is A2 - 'Milky Way' - much more minimal but so groovy -- perfect in a set. On the flip, 'Air Walker' shows a more mental and darker side of Keisike -- the dark synths which appear in the middle of the track will definitely stick in people's minds. Finally, 'Sonic' is a perfect funky minimal house cut to conclude this eclectic EP."

FREUDE AM TANZEN (GERMANY)

Artist: JACKMATE
Title: Interspherical Tensions
Label: FREUDE AM TANZEN (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: FREUDE 034EP
Michael Baumann aka Jackmate presents three new power generators equipped with the right measure of steam and courage. "Two Tone" is a glossily illuminated, sensory-enhanced club production. "Boots" shows that Chicago and Detroit could be sister cities, in the heart of the Black Forest! Finally, "Interspherical Tensions" is deep, grounded and esoteric, bringing the entire essence of night to the morning.

FRUSTRATED FUNK (NETHERLANDS)

Artist: E.R.P.
Title: Vox Automaton
Label: FRUSTRATED FUNK (NETHERLANDS)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: FR 014EP
"Gerard Hanson aka Convextion aka E.R.P. comes with one of his best records. More electro-influenced then his Down Low and Frantic Flowers outings.. But this is th shit for everyone owning a Model 500 record or a bunch of Underground resistance or Drexciya vinyl. E.R.P. stays true to his own sound and doesn't just copy his heroes. He is one of those rare talents that will be used as reference." Pressed on red vinyl.
