Artist: JAMES TRIO, BOB
Title: Explosions
Label: ESP-DISK
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: ESPDISK 1009CD
Featured artists: Bob James (piano); Barre Philips (bass); Robert Pozar (percussion). Also including Bob Ashley and Gordon Mumma (electronic tape collage). From the original liner notes: "The recording is made of an assembly of estranging electronic sound effects, trite sports commentaries, and the music of a beautifully improvising jazz trio. Bob James has, through this convulsion of out-of-context sound elements and music of a trio, tried to emphasize the strange acoustic complex of modern man in his city, in his world, in his cosmos. Digitally remastered from the original tapes. Manufactured in the USA by the original label."

Artist: KALLERDAHL, LINDHA
Title: Gold
Label: ESP-DISK
Format: CD
Price: $12.00
Catalog #: ESPDISK 4041CD
"Lindha Kallerdahl (grand piano, organ, vocals). Lindha Kallerdahl, born in 1972, studied jazz at the renowned Swedish Jazz-Schools Skurup near Malmö and Birka in Stockholm during 1993-1996. Situated in Stockholm, she early came in touch with free music and made successful collaborations in with Mats Gustavsson, David Stackenäs, Raymond Strid, Mattias Windemo and Fredrik Ljungkvist. In the summer of 2000 Lindha made a spectacular project together with Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke, Mats Gustavsson and dancer Lotta Melin among others. In a small town on the southern countryside of Sweden the combo gave about 15-20 concerts in a row within a couple of weeks. The music was recorded and released in 2005 on Smalltown Supersound under the title HIDROS. Lindha's original style and emotional impact has been headhunted for different projects and she has made tours with -- for example -- Thomas Lehn and Jaap Blonk. One of these projects featured Ikue Mori and Lise-Lotte Norelius and was a new and important step for Lindha's development and also led to new musical encounters with Okkuyng Lee at Tonic, New York 2005. In 2003, Thomas Gustavsson and Lindha explored new ways of improvising and live-composing and came up with the groundbreaking Silent Arrow on Footprint Records in 2006. This album also features Anders Kjellberg and Owe Almgren. New ESP artist! Previously only available as an import."

Artist: ROTH, ALAN
Title: Inside Out In The Open
Label: ESP-DISK
Format: DVD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: ESPDISK 4042DVD
"Featured interviews: Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Alan Silva, Burton Greene, Joseph Jarman, Baikida Carroll, William Parker, Daniel Carter, Matthew Shipp, Susie Ibarra. Featured performers: Denis Charles, Glenn Spearman, Wilber Morris, Joseph Jarman, Peter Brötzmann, John Tchicai, Sun Ra and his Arkestra, In Order To Survive (William Parker, Cooper-Moore, Rob Brown, Susie Ibarra), Other Dimensions In Music (Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, Rashid Bakr, William Parker, Matt Shipp, Baikida Carroll and Reggie Workman and more. Inside Out In The Open is an hour-long documentary about a form of jazz, popularly known as 'free jazz.' The film is an exploration of that music through the voices and performances of over twenty such musicians, from those who were its first generation to younger musicians joining the tradition. Unlike more encyclopedic documentaries, Inside Out In The Open unfolds in a more organic and musical form, revealing multiple aspects of this music and its makers. The editing structure is reflective and complimentary to the music. Free-form jazz, also known as the 'the new thing,' or 'avant-garde jazz,' burst on the scene in the early '60s, led by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. It vastly extended the boundaries in rhythm, sound, and harmonics, stressing collective improvisation, with an expansive openness and with deep personal emotion. The release of Inside Out In The Open comes on the heels of the major 10-part Jazz series by Ken Burns, which was criticized for giving little attention to jazz after 1960, and for being critical of the genre of free jazz. With only a small amount of media work available on this development in jazz, Inside Out In The Open is a welcome contribution, giving overdue respect to these musical artists." Produced, directed and edited by Alan Roth. Running time: 1 hour; dual-sided DVD in both NTSC (side A) and PAL (side B) for worldwide play.

ESSENCE MUSIC (BRAZIL)

Artist: RAPOON
Title: From Shadows Sleep
Label: ESSENCE MUSIC (BRAZIL)
Format: CD
Price: $21.00
Catalog #: ESS 006CD
2006 release. "A unique masterwork of mysterious dark and droney sounds! Less rhythmic than previous efforts, From Shadows Sleep sees Rapoon visiting ancient temples, moving between shadowy labyrinths of meticulous drones, echoed tones and distant rumblings, building a hypnotic sonic ritual that brings traces from a distant past in form of atmospheric, spiritual mantras of a possessive power. Ominous and bleak, yet wondrous, Robin Storey's trance-inducing soundscapes swirl around majestic droning tape loops, patterns, ethnic samples (especially tablas) and other secret devices masterfully arranged to mesmerize the listener. There's no light in here -- you will be guided by Rapoon's brooding and extremely detailed sonic imagery. Some bits of these recordings were initially conceived during the urban riots of the Thatcher years in Great Britain and were wisely put to rest until now. As Mr. Storey says, 'From Shadows Sleep refers to the fact that the music hibernates in shadows, unformed until it is heard as if in sleep and visits one aspect of the creative process in particular: the idea that a piece is never finished. Taking elements from old recordings and adding new material, I have tried to re-visit old spaces with fresh ears and a contemporary take on old sounds. Rediscovering for myself an interaction with the sounds that are essentially lost after the creative process is "finished".' Robin Storey is a founding member and the real creative force behind the legendary, influential experimental collective Zoviet France and has been actively recording and performing for more than 25 years -- since 1992 -- under the Rapoon banner -- always keeping an extraordinarily high quality control based in his very own trademark -- the creation of mesmerizing ethnic-based soundscapes. We are pleased to offer the album housed in an old-fashioned letterpress embossed mini-box packaging with a set of cards printed on quality recycled paper stock showcasing 11 exclusive paintings by Robin Storey! Limited edition of 800 copies."

Artist: ATOMINE ELEKTRINE
Title: Nebulous
Label: ESSENCE MUSIC (BRAZIL)
Format: CD
Price: $19.00
Catalog #: ESS 007CD
"On this second installment for Essence Music, Peter Andersson brings Atomine Elektrine to an utterly refined and perfectionist sphere! The trancey beats and sacral atmosphere of Binomial Fusion are past and widely replaced by a truly out-of-body, deeply layered and dynamic cosmic experience in form of a masterful ambience filled with energy outbursts, synthetic movements and algorithmic rhythms. An aural projection for a detailed exploration of nebulas, black holes, exploding stars and unknown deep corners of the cosmos. Very much influenced by the electronic side of the Kraut scene and with the ability of imposing his very own classic trademark, Andersson sets a new stone and makes Nebulous one of the greatest albums related to this genre since the early '70s. Another amazing proof of talent from this Swedish genius! Presented in an snowy white gatefold digisleeve and tracing paper packaging."

Artist: ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO
Title: Ominous From The Cosmic Inferno
Label: ESSENCE MUSIC (BRAZIL)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: ESS 009CD
"After a long period of great expectation -- the band had been carefully planning this album for us during the last couple of years -- Acid Mothers Temple finally debuts on Essence Music with two releases (see also 41st Century Splendid Man Returns)! And what this powerful quartet delivers on Ominous From The Cosmic Inferno is nothing short but amazing. A super wild, punishingly dark slab of experimental psychedelic hell where fuzz-blasted, ultra-riffing and hypnotic speed guru guitar chaos -- courtesy of Mr. Kawabata Makoto -- meets early Amon Düül-influenced druggy, acoustic, mantric folk experimentalisms and Eastern drones from below. The scent of sulphur fills the air and brings on the Japanese psychedelic inferno! Presented in our deluxe, sturdy gatefold mini-LP packaging featuring cosmic artwork by Jason Killinger and including a striking pop-up!"

Artist: ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O.
Title: 41st Century Splendid Man Returns
Label: ESSENCE MUSIC (BRAZIL)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: ESS 010CD
"We are proud to say welcome to the Japanese psychedelic retro freak ensemble on our roster -- with two releases (see also Ominous From The Cosmic Inferno) -- and finally make available on CD one of the most captivatingly beautiful recordings from The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. line-up! Motorik Krautrock rhythms work side-by-side with interstellar signals, ghostly female voices and analog synths. Bursts of damaged psych brilliance and free guitars open and seal the album, healing the aural wounds for/from the mammoth droney, mysterious and transcendental ambient experience of the title track, built with the aid of a non-traditional array of instruments, like sarangi, sitar, zurna and Tibetan trumpet. Definitely not of this world. This is one of the many incarnations of the band, a combo also featuring, at the time of the recordings, the beautiful vocals of Cotton Casino and the appearance of Tatsuya Yoshida from Ruins as one of the special guests. As always, monster guitarist and mastermind Kawabata Makoto leads the troupe to ensure a safer trip. Originally released as an extremely limited 12" picture vinyl on Tumult Records, this extended CD edition features two extra tracks, new artwork -- including a stunning psychedelic painting by Jason Killinger -- and comes in our deluxe, custom old school miniature LP gatefold packaging!"

FALLOUT (UK)

Artist: FIELDS
Title: Fields
Label: FALLOUT (UK)
Format: LP
Price: $22.00
Catalog #: FO 2002LP
Previously reissued on CD by Fallout, now issued on deluxe LP format as well; 180 gram pressing. This U.S. power trio's sole album was released on both sides of the Atlantic in 1969, but sank without a trace. Equally influenced by blues, soul and acid rock, it's an enjoyable mixture of snappy hard rock songs and the lengthy "Love Is The Word" suite, which occupies a whole side of the LP. Featuring backing vocals from Northern Soul legend Brenda Holloway and production by former Merry-Go-Round guitarist Bill Rinehart, it's a must for fans of bluesy psychedelic rock.

Artist: RAINBOW
Title: After The Storm
Label: FALLOUT (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FO 2078CD
The original sleeve of this eclectic collection of Los Angeles psychedelia promised it would deliver "a feeling of newness." And indeed few albums from 1968 could boast such a range of styles, taking in acid rock, sunshine pop and heavy soul, with plenty of fuzz guitar and progressive keyboard interludes along the way. An overlooked gem that's sure to appeal to fans of classic underground music, it makes its long-overdue CD debut here.
