DMG ARC

Artist: LAST EXIT
Title: Headfirst Into The Flames: Live In Europe
Label: DMG ARC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: DMGARC 701CD
"Our second release on Downtown Music Gallery's newly formed DMG ARC label is considered by many fans to be the best of the six releases [certainly the best of the five live ones] by the improv super-group Last Exit, and the least widely distributed. Originally released as a limited edition on Muworks, this item commands high prices ranging to $50-$75 from collector's shops and auction web sites including eBay. Ronald Shannon Jackson is on drums, occasionally adding creepy blues vocals worthy of a serial killer. Sonny Sharrock plays nasty blues lines when he isn't beating his guitar to a pulp, while German sax madman Peter Brötzmann veers between similar extremes with his squealing and honking. Laswell was the perfect bassist for this unit, his dirty, hard-driving lines retaining a feeling of downright meanness throughout. (Please, someone lay 'My Balls/Your Chin' and 'Pig Cheese' on a Najee fan!) An over-the-top live recording of frighteningly talented musicians improvising as a unit, this album is what you REALLY want to scrape out your cerebral cortex! 'Never let it be said that Last Exit didn't take advantage of recording their live shows or playing in front of adoring Europeans. With cover art and song titles courtesy of the late avant-garde British poet Kenneth Patchen, Headfirst kicks off with the brain fry of 'Lizard Eyes' only to launch into a Sharrock improv called 'Don't Be a Cry Baby, Whatever You Do.' Brotzmann blows wild and free here, and his squeal and blurt provides a great counterpoint to the rumble of the rhythms and the pummeling sonic overload of Sharrock's guitar. Another piece of blurt that will make your head spin.'" --John Dougan

Artist: STONE QUARTET, THE
Title: DMG @ The Stone Vol. 1: December 22, 2006
Label: DMG ARC
Format: CD
Price: $14.00
Catalog #: DMGARC 721CD
"Our third release on Downtown Music Gallery's newly formed DMG ARC label is the first in our series of CDs recorded at the DMG New Music Magic Mystery Festival at The Stone in December 2006. The second set that night was originally supposed to be Joelle Leandre performing duos with Marilyn Crispell, Mat Maneri and Roy Campbell, but turned out to be a superb quartet with Joelle directing. This was a first time performance by this unique drummerless line-up and it was a phenomenal set! There were sections of duos and trios that Joelle helped instigate, yet you couldn't predict the many magical moments that arose from this group. Superbly recorded by John Rosenberg and wonderfully remixed & mastered by Jean Marc Foussat, the sound is incredible. I still get goosebumps as I listen to this disc, since it does capture that dynamic improv magic so well. I recall that both sets that night were excellent, the first was a strong duo with percussionist Kevin Norton (released on Leo) and the second is this fabulous quartet. Listening now to the second set, whether you were there or not, you get the feeling that something very special was taking place. There is an aura of suspense and mystery that runs through the entire set/disc. You can hear all four musicians listening closely and having an ongoing dialogue. This quartet features Joelle Leandre on contrabass, Marilyn Crispell on piano, Roy Campbell, Jr. on trumpets & flute and Mat Maneri on viola & violin. Highest recommendation from your good friends at Downtown Music Gallery!"

Title: Remixes (Body Count/Dysekta/Jigsaw)
Label: DUB STEPPERS (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: DSR 003EP
"What with his collaboration with Cotti, a 12" on Crater and to round things off, we've managed to get this lovely slab of vinyl back in again. More dark and heavy dubstep from one of the most prolific producers around at the moment. Three tracks of some serious bass pressure."

DUBKRAFT (ROMANIA)

Artist: ALIEN PIMP
Title: Robots & Cellos/Oil Man
Label: DUBKRAFT (ROMANIA)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: DRK 001EP
"Dubkraft are already one of the top ten bestsellers on digital-tunes.net, and this one is a fine example of the global appeal of dubstep. 'Robots & Cellos' kicks off in fine style with epic strings and moody bass sweeps. On the flip, 'Oil Man' delivers industrial tinged sonic warfare to make the club shake to its foundations."

DUBTING (UK)

Artist: SPARX, ROB
Title: Independent Life
Label: DUBTING (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: DUBTING 001EP
"Rob Sparx delivers yet again another heavy Reggae infused Dubstep track featuring the Original Mix, Dub Mix and The Dubstitutes Jah Jah Dub mix on the flip side. A1. Independent Life (Original Mix); B1. Independent Life (Dub Mix); B2. Jah Jah Dub"

Artist: QUANTUM SOUL
Title: Waiting On Dub/Open Skies
Label: DUBTING (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: DUBTING 003EP
"Dub Ting are a label that do exactly what they say on the tin -- mighty chucks of club-destroying dub that are bound to get everyone in the club up. On this release, Leighton Buzzard's Quantum Soul gives up some spooky speaker abuse with glimpses of a long forgotten reggae record floating around behind layers of top production. On the B-side, things get really intense with a long, drawn-out intro, perfect for giving your crowd a rest before the beat drops."

DUST-TO-DIGITAL

Artist: VA
Title: Art of Field Recording Volume I
Label: DUST-TO-DIGITAL
Format: 4CD BOX

Repressed and fully available again. This is volume 1 of Dust-to-Digital's robust Art of Field Recording series assembled by esteemed archivists Art and Margo Rosenbaum. This impressive 4CD set includes ballads, blues, spirituals, work songs and slave songs, religious singing, such as the African-American ring-shout and other traditional folk music from Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan and New York performed with voices and stringed instruments such as banjo and fiddle. Comes housed in a 11"x11"x1" color cardboard box containing a 96-page 10"x10" perfect-bound book with over 100 illustrations and photographs, and four CDs with a total of 110 tracks. The diverse talents of both Art and Margo Rosenbaum have allowed them to document music traditions in a way few others could have done. Art is a painter, a muralist, and an illustrator, as well as a collector and performer of traditional American folk music. Margo is a photographer that has captured many of Art's field recording encounters. Art Rosenbaum of Athens, Georgia, has been collecting and studying traditional American music for over 50 years. His focus covers Appalachian banjo tunes and ballads, Southern and Midwestern fiddle tunes, blues and spirituals. Rosenbaum began seeking out traditional performers while in his teens, rediscovering and recording the great blues guitarist Scrapper Blackwell and fiddler John W. Summers, both in his then-home state of Indiana. His fieldwork has produced archival material in the Indiana University Folklore Archives, the University of Georgia Libraries and the Archives of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

DUSTY GROOVE

Artist: AXELROD, DAVID
Title: Seriously Deep
Label: DUSTY GROOVE
Format: CD
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: DGA 3008CD
"First time on CD for one of the rarest albums ever from funky maestro David Axelrod -- the producer known for his work with The Electric Prunes on Reprise, and a string of late '60s classics on Capitol Records! This mid '70s set for Polydor has Axelrod working in a jazz funk mode -- much more electric than before, with heavy keyboards from Crusader Joe Sample, thundering drums from Ndugu Chancler, reeds from Jerome Richardson and Ernie Watts, vibes from Gary Coleman, and a nice undercurrent of strings as well. There's a subtle dose of fusion in the mix, but one that's never too jamming -- and Axelrod always maintains his trademark sense of space and timing -- turning the simplest musical measure into the kind of groove that holds up well into the 21st century. The album's a favorite of sample hounds and crate diggers, and is incredibly hard to find on vinyl."

ECHOCORD (GERMANY)

Artist: QUANTEC
Title: Moonstruck EP
Label: ECHOCORD (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: ECHO 028EP
This is the second release by Quantec aka Sven Schienhammer on Echocord. He also has releases on Styrax Leaves and Statik Entertainment. Sven uses old school hardware synthesizers to make wonderfully dubby techno and ambient tracks -- think Basic Channel, DeepChord or Pole. This is an absolute must-have for fans of the genre.

ECSTATIC PEACE

Artist: POOR SCHOOL
Title: The Holy Master
Label: ECSTATIC PEACE
Format: LP
Price: $13.00
Catalog #: E#105J
"Poor School started in April 2005 with Bryan Ramirez (gtr), John Niekrasz (drms) and Nathan Hoyme (sax). We first caught wind of this sick noise/jazz/postpunk rock trio when John Olson, he of American Tapes, Wolf Eyes, Dead Machines, etc. brought Ramirez' other combo Ex-Cocaine (who have a sick LP on Siltbreeze) to the No Fun basement a few years back and Ramirez laid some Poor School CD-R action on us. Needless to say, we were buh-lown away by the manic improv hepness and immediately emailed the dude to see if we could slam some Poor School magic onto black plastik. And unto Ecstatic Peace was delivered The Holy Master. Ramirez and Olson go waay back when the two of them jammed together in the nascent Michigan underground psychedelic troupe Universal Indians. Ramirez took off to Missoula, Montana to investigate micro-brews and mountain air and help put together the awesome Ex-Cocaine. He's still there. Niekrasz went to get high on life in India but is expected back sooner than later. Upon his return, we can hopefully expect Poor School to shed new love and light and chaos for the future. Keep yr eyes peeled."

Artist: ISLAJA
Title: Blaze Mountain Recordings
Label: ECSTATIC PEACE
Format: CD
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: E#106CD
"Islaja is Merja Kokkonen, a visual artist and musician from Helsinki, Finland. She's been releasing records on Finnish label Fonal since 2004. The first one, Meritie, introduced her lovely sense of musical wonder to the world and garnered excited praise from the more astute ears at The Wire (UK) and Dusted Magazine (USA). The 2nd release Palaa Aurinkoon was equally boss and brought Islaja to North America with compatriot Finnish folk experimentalists Lau Nau and Kuupuu where she mesmerized audiences with a captivating minimalism of sweet singing and small toy and hand-made instruments played by herself and companion Jukka Raisanen. In 2007, she released her third album Ulual Yyy which expanded her sound into further psychedelic paths. Since then Islaja has played numerous large festivals including Eurosonic, Sonar and the 2006 All Tomorrows Parties/Nightmare Before Christmas curated by Thurston Moore. Animal Collective invited Islaja to play a two week support tour with them in Europe. Blaze Mountain Recordings is a live document, all music and words by Merja and played by Merja and Jukka. It's the perfect portal to enter the living world of Islaja's music/art spirit with a unity of traditional Finnish forest mystery and a radical song universe."

EDITIONS MEGO (AUSTRIA)

Artist: FASSLER & BILLY ROISZ, SILVIA
Title: Skylla
Label: EDITIONS MEGO (AUSTRIA)
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: DEMEGO 001CD
Silvia Fässler: computer, electronics, guitar; Billy Roisz: computer, turntable. This is the long-awaited debut collaboration between these long time associates of Viennese subculture; Silvia in various curatorial roles and Billy as video artist. Skylla is a monster. A sheering, scathing collision of computer-generated sounds meshed with guitar and turntable. The results are intense yet bearable, funny but not stupid. From the rhythmical excesses of "Pink Umbrella" and "Kirre" to the subtle dronescape of "Syne," this is a full-on experience. Instruments used include the Kluppe Looper and Lloopp.
