DRAG CITY

Artist: BABY DEE
Title: Safe Inside The Day
Label: DRAG CITY
Format: CD
Price: $13.50
Catalog #: DC 351CD
"I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. This album is very much about the street I grew up on. Where The Earlie King ruled without mercy. And Bobby Slot and Freddy Weiss invented the Dance of Diminishing Possibilities. I left for New York in 1972 and eventually became a musician. I was good at the sacred and I was good at the profane but I could never get the hang of anything in between and I went from the street to the church to the street again and then I stopped. I found myself back in Cleveland and began to write songs. And then I stopped writing songs. I thought I had said everything I had to say and there was nothing left to say, so I simply stopped. And then I remembered Bobby Slot and Freddy Weiss and my own father and all the little ghosts that lived with us and I realized that there was something left to say after all. The inside is bigger than the outside, more important, and less destructible. 'Many mansions' and all that. Kingdom of god. I love everybody." --Dee

EM RECORDS (JAPAN)

Artist: WADA, YOSHI
Title: Lament For The Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile
Label: EM RECORDS (JAPAN)
Format: CD
Price: $20.00
Catalog #: EM 1074CD
Finally, a CD reissue of Yoshi Wada's most important and most rare LP, Lament For The Rise And Fall Of The Elephantine Crocodile, originally released in 1982 on the India Navigation label. Yoshi Wada is a Japanese sound installation artist and musician -- he moved to New York in the late 1960s, and became well-known as a Fluxus artist with links to La Monte Young, and has been involved in many performances and sound installations. However, he has released only two recordings, which are both hard to find. This CD contains two pieces: track 1 features a solo overtone voice (he studied with legendary Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath) recorded at the performance space Dry Pool (literally a dry pool that Wada slept in before this recording), with a deep underground echoing feeling. Track 2 displays Wada's trademark dense psychedelic drones using his "pipe horn," a home-made, bagpipe-like instrument. These wondrous sounds will take you to another, better world. 96khz/24bit digitally remastered complete full-length version (original LP edition was edited). Liner notes in English & Japanese.

EXPLOITED (GERMANY)

Artist: SIRIUSMO
Title: All The Girls
Label: EXPLOITED (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $10.00
Catalog #: GH 007EP
Siriusmo aka Moritz Friedrich is a Berliner wunderkind with a hypnotizing sound. Everybody who already heard the preview of "All The Girls" on Shir Khan's Maximize! immediately fell in love and now the track comes in new versions with remixes by Yuksek and Tomboy. The track "Wow" was featured on Modeselektor's Boogy Bytes Vol. 03 CD on BPitch -- the original is much faster and Modeselektor turns down the tempo to make it a decent hip-hop stomper.

FAMILY VINEYARD

Artist: SPEARE, JED
Title: Sound Works 1982-1987
Label: FAMILY VINEYARD
Format: 2CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: FV 052CD
"Jed Speare is a crossover artist who has been working in sound, video, and performance for over thirty years. Sound Works 1982-1987 reflects his investigation and uniquely expressive practice of musique concrete-like analog sound/field recording, editing, combining and mixing during that era. He is the creator of the Smithsonian Folkways LP Cable Car Soundscapes (1982), a project that begins as a sound documentary and ends as a tape composition based on cable car sounds. In the early '80s, he recorded with the San Francisco groups, Research Library (appearing with and solo on the legendary Red Spot compilation LP; Subterranean Records), Ultrasheen (7" EP; Subterranean), and Appliances. This 2CD collects five of Speare's long-form compositions for the first time. Splicing together sources into towering movements used for stage and screen, these two hours of music take you to the heart of sound where nothing can own you. A 12-page booklet features an introduction by video artist and writer George Quasha, Speare's detailed notes on each piece, rare photographs and score reproductions. Remastered by Bhob Rainey (nmperign)."

FOUR:TWENTY (UK)

Artist: MOWBRAY & D. RAMIREZ, JAMES
Title: Time Fades Away
Label: FOUR:TWENTY (UK)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.50
Catalog #: FOUR 036EP
"Four:Twenty round off another impressive year with this final collaboration between D. Ramirez and James Mowbray, Time Fades Away. 'Time Fades Away' sees the pair combine vocals, mind-bending synth work and the phenomenal production Ramirez is known for with Mowbray's trademark tight grooves and more restrained approach to create a dancefloor bomb. As always with Four:Twenty, the choice of remixer is impeccable and this time we're treated to Leipzig-based Daniel Stefanik. Known for his dub-infused deep house and techno on Moon Harbour, Liebe*Detail and his own Cargo Edition, Stefanik has turned in a stunning mix and dub for the deeper floors. Detroit meets Germany via Chicago sums it up nicely!"

HUNGAROTON

Artist: PONGRACZ/IVAN PATACHICH, ZOLTAN
Title: Hungarian Electroacoustic Music
Label: HUNGAROTON
Format: CD
Price: $17.00
Catalog #: HUNG 31985CD
2001 release. "The spread of electro-acoustic music in Hungary was hindered for a long time by the lack of a studio of adequate technical standard. At first Zoltán Pongrácz has his own studio, then a few years later, in 1972, a modestly equipped workshop was established with the guidance of Iván Patachich. After two years' experimental work, the Hungarian Radio electro-acoustic music studio came into being in 1975 as part of the Hungarian Film Producing Company. During the 1970s the circle of composers began to widen. Many had completed music studies of this sort abroad. However, the originators of the genre in Hungary were the two, already mentioned, composers: Zoltán Pongrácz and Iván Patachich. Pongrácz has been the representative figure of Hungarian electro-acoustic music, and Patachich, though he worked in many genres, the bulk of his works were composed in the studio of Hungarian Radio, with traditional sounds augmented by electro-acoustic experimentation. This collection spans these two artists' output from 1972-1989."

HUX (UK)

Artist: MARTYN, JOHN
Title: The Battle of Medway
Label: HUX (UK)
Format: CD
Price: $18.00
Catalog #: HUX 090CD
Live at the Medway Folk Centre, July 17th, 1973. "The Battle of Medway, released with the full approval of John Martyn, captures him in blistering form, on one of his last-ever solo acoustic folk club gigs. Famed for the late-night cool of his '70s studio albums and the explosive live shows of the same era, Martyn forged a unique path through the accepted forms of folk, jazz and rock, bringing electric power into the folk clubs and soulful balladry into the colleges. Recorded in July 1973, in ambient stereo by club organizer Geoff Harden at Medway, Kent. In between the releases of Solid Air and Inside Out, this is the sound of John Martyn -- on one of his determinedly last-ever folk club gigs -- frightening the living daylights out of anyone who came there expecting 'The Wild Rover.'"

I'M SINGLE (GERMANY)

Artist: KHAN
Title: Who Never Rests Remixed Vol. 1
Label: I'M SINGLE (GERMANY)
Format: 12"
Price: $11.00
Catalog #: IMS 001EP
"Can 'Khan' Oral, the international all-genre performer and 'man who never rests' visionary launches his new project I'm Single, a 12" record label as a new platform for him and his worldwide network of musicians and friends. Khan, renowned for his standing between the worlds of electronic and classic songwriting, glamour and deconstruction, ecstasy and quality plans with I'm Single to support his artistic vision with originality and creativity that will continue his goal of tearing down the walls of mono-culture and single style approach standardization in the world of music. The path of I'm Single is not a trend or artistic turn that Khan has just picked up on. His roots in the first techno generation on labels like Force Inc./Mille Plateux, Harvest EMI, Matador Record, Smile Communications or Cologne Liquid Sky confirm his artist credibility in creating cult classics. In the early '90s, Khan moved with Jimi Tenor to New York, creating multiple 12"s and projects, i.e. Bizz O.D., El Turco Loco, 4E, Kid & Khan. The I'm Single debut 12" is comprised of exclusive remixes out of Khan's last studio album Who Never Rests on Tomlab. DJ Kaos famous for remixing !!! and Roxy Music has produced a German 'Kraut-trance' pop version of 'On The Run.' Fabian Stall, also known as Zero Cash (Television Rocks, Aggro Colgne), is represented with a flaming down-beat ballad of 'Favor After Favor.' Also, the techno snob Dirk Leyers presents a cryptic dark dance club track, 'You Like To Party?'"
