KARMAROUGE (GERMANY)
Artist:
VEGETABLE ORCHESTRA, THE
Title:
Remixed
Label:
KARMAROUGE (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$15.00
Catalog #:
KR 034CD
The Vegetable Orchestra
are from Vienna and they use musical instruments made out of vegetables: using carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, leek-zucchini vibrators, cucumberophones and celery bongos, the orchestra creates its own extraordinary and vegetable sound universe. The ensemble overcomes preserved and marinated sound conceptions or tirelessly re-stewed listening habits, putting its focus on expanding the variety of vegetable instruments, developing novel musical ideas and exploring fresh vegetable sound gardens. The music represents an isomorphism of electronic music and the structure of the sounds produced by the vegetables. The concept of this remix project is the interpretation and reconstruction of electronic music with organic means by using the original vegetable sounds and samples. Karmarouge Records has invited well-respected international artists such as
Ricardo Villalobos
,
Luciano
,
Gabriel Ananda
,
Frank Martiniq
,
Oliver Hacke
,
Märtini Brös
,
Anja Schneider
,
Basteroid
and
Sian
to take part and create their individual vegetable sound interpretation. Armed with vegetable samples, a sequencer and a hand-held blender, it's up to them to show the world how to brew a large portion of minimal techno out of ginger, leek and onions, how to buzz the pumpkin bass and cook a delicate celery soup. Listen to the vegetables!

Title:
Definition Track
Label:
KILL THE DJ (FRANCE)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
KTDJ 013EP
"We did not meet Fred Hush in a trendy nightclub. He is not a reclusive genius who sent us demos with spooky letters with the handwriting of a serial killer. No. We met him in a club on the French/Belgian border where partying comes first, music second, good or bad. When he played that 'Definition Track,' Ivan Smagghe freaked out simply because it reminded him what house music (dare we say 'old school house music') was all about: simplicity. Since then, we've been very busy. And Fred too... Ivan thinks he is one of the most talented European producers around. On the remix side, we are also very happy to have the first solo effort by Jennifer Cardini. And an effort it is not. The remix has got the natural flow of the people who know."

KINDISCH (GERMANY)
Artist:
MATCHBOX
Title:
U Can Get Sonar
Label:
KINDISCH (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
KD 014EP
"Having already proved itself as a forward-thinking label which provides a valuable platform for up-and-coming talent alongside better established names, Kindisch once again delivers the goods -- in the form of this debut 12" from Matchbox. In summer 2006 he teamed up with Ilja Coric to unite their different qualities and create tracks that reflect their vision of modern dance music. Matchbox's knowledge of the history of techno music and his experience as a DJ in combination with Ilja's skills as a composer and producer are the basis for a successful collaboration. The 12" opens with a blast of superlative dancefloor funk, 'U Can Get Sonar.' It's immediately obvious that this track is the creation of someone who knows -- as a fan, DJ, record-seller and musician -- what works on the dancefloor, what sounds good -- and has endeavored to make his record satisfy us on all counts. Carried along by an unbelievably buoyant bassline, purring, deep house-style chords and crystalline percussion, the track climaxes in waves of synthesized strings. 'Upad Aah' is a vivacious, skippy dancefloor track, its constituent bass and drum elements rounded and smoothed for maximum bounce; sharp, pressurized snares provide a glorious counterpoint, as quasi-tribal percussion, and airy African female vocals are layered over the top. The result is fresh, powerful and eminently danceable. 'Persuasion' is a deep, swinging club track; once again that warm bass is at the forefront, with clipped yet languid chords building melody around it as."
KINGSTON SOUNDS (UK)
Artist:
ZUKIE, TAPPER
Title:
Rootsman Connection
Label:
KINGSTON SOUNDS (UK)
Format:
CD
Price:
$19.00
Catalog #:
KING 014CD
"During the mid-'70s in downtown Kingston, it was a heavy time both musically and politically. The climate was defining the music and everything was dread. During this time, Tapper Zukie was establishing himself as named star on the DJ roots circuit and would become a favorite with the UK punk scene. Back home however, Tapper was also getting a name for his production talents, of which here we have 15 examples. Here Kingston Sounds have selected some fine cuts from this period with singers such as Horace Andy, Cornell Campbell and Prince Alla, as well as lesser known ones such as Ba Wisdom and Putto Black. Of course no Tapper Zukie collection would be complete without the man himself dropping some lyrics, so there's a couple of cuts from him, too, including a sound clash with Jah Mikey."

KLANG ELEKTRONIK (GERMANY)

CD
Price:
$15.50
Catalog #:
KLANG 017CD
2007's
Why Not
?! saw
Alter Ego
sky-rocket and chart into the stratosphere, and now
Why Next?!
features some of the most prominent names in techno tackling some of their favorite songs off the album. On
Why Not?!
,
Jörn-Elling Wuttke
and
Roman Flügel
confronted the nervous turmoil of the dancefloor in this era of NuRave and squiggly sounds with a treatment of techno that is humorous and extreme, with rave-reeling, sound exploration and roaring laughter. On this remix album, we see
Why Not?!
through the eyes of outstanding producers, ranging from
Joakim
to
Deepgroove & Jamie Anderson
, from
Carl Craig
to
Supermayer
. These are tracks that no one would have expected -- with corny jokes and sound research, grotesque gags and mind-expanding wobble merging closely.
Carl Craig
feeds his sampler with glittering glamrock chunk, unsettling his usual elegant sound cosmos.
Tim Deluxe
's ultra-tight groove elaborates on the exuberance of "Why Not?!" with even less restraint.
Nerk & Dirk Leyers
make short work of the original "Fuckingham Palace," smartly rendering the bass line into swarms of bass lines.
Deepgroove & Jamie Anderson
's remix lulls the listener into an illusion of security before it is hoovercrafted away.
DJ Koze
delivers an Afrobeat version of "Jolly Joker,"
Joakim
makes the groove and bass stabs of "Why Not?!" sound more mechanic and angular and cartoon-like.
Modeselektor
changes "Fuckingham Palace" into a dubstep track, adding the pot-bellied humor of ragga (or is it gabba?) to this otherwise gloomy genre.
Supermayer
extract a very special left-field moment,
Adam Sky
transforms pure mania into pure pop music, Alter Ego themselves expose more glam-rock moments with a "Boys Club" version of "Gary," with vocals from
Product 01
and the bonus track turns emo timbres into bleep.
KOMPAKT (GERMANY)
Artist:
BROKE
Title:
We Ain't Got It/Coladancer
Label:
KOMPAKT (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
KOM POP011EP
Broke
are
Matias Aguayo
and
Rocness
. "We Ain't Got It" and "Coladancer" are two massive, cumbia-infected techno songs that have been rocking audiences around the globe during Broke's live shows. Combining the archaic thump of traditional Latin American and state-of-the-art electronic dance music, this is very different from
Luciano
and
Ricardo
's percussive, light-footed efforts. These are damn serious grooves.
Artist:
PLUXUS
Title:
Solid State
Label:
KOMPAKT (GERMANY)
Format:
CD
Price:
$14.50
Catalog #:
KOMP 065CD
Sweden's
Pluxus
originally self-released
Solid State
in 2006. Upon first hearing it, DJ and co-owner of the Kompakt label,
Michael Mayer
, was immediately captivated by their inventive ways of veering away from the systematic approach typically taken with techno music.
Sebastian Tesch
,
Adam Kammerland
and
Anders Ekert
formed Pluxus back in 1998, when the Swedish electronic scene was comprised of dull, uniform club music or introverted art music. Influenced by
Devo
,
Jean Jacques Perrey
and
Kraftwerk
through
Aphex Twin
and
Matmos
, they set out to tell a very different tale by trading in their traditional instruments for vintage synths, computers and a sampler: thus, Pluxus began to emit a blend of cuddly instrumental electro-pop. Three years of evolution later, the band turned away from their kiddish approach to a more varied and deeper style of creation:
Solid State
. Banjos strum over rollover breaks and beats with "Transient," a romantic French flair permeates "Perm," and "Contact" emits a techno-fied ruckus. There's also two early Aphex-inspired lullabies, "Solid State" and "Slow Peel." It's high time that Pluxus get their solid due.
LEENA (GERMANY)
Artist:
AGNES & LEE VAN DOWSKI
Title:
Louder Elvis/Radio Graceland
Label:
LEENA (GERMANY)
Format:
12"
Price:
$12.00
Catalog #:
LEENA 006EP
"With all those mountains, it figures that the Swiss know a thing or two about altitude. Turns out they know a thing or two about depth, as well. At least that's the case with the Geneva-based Frenchman Lee van Dowski and Geneva native Agnès, who make their first appearance on Leena after a slew of recordings for labels like Num, Plak, Bpitch, Soma, Einmaleins, Minibar, Sthlmaudio, Resopal Red, and more. Simplicity is the name of the game on both tracks here. On 'Louder Elvis,' the two unleash pure deep-house bounce over ominous, Detroit-inspired pads; clean-as-a-whistle bleeps laser their way through a fog of dubbed-out delay. The tune's flow suggests a live session, with tumbling chords following their own whims, but there's nothing haphazard about it. This one's all about the afterhours, head down and moving steadily into the light. A vocal sample kicks off 'Radio Graceland' but don't expect any bloated rock 'n' roll theatrics. Instead, Van Dowski and Agnès lay down a slowly rolling groove with a Latin touch and even a little bit of reggaeton lurch. Hand drums dapple the landscape with faded colors, keeping the mood subdued -- at least until the beat gathers steam and bright, syncopated chords splash about. Groaning analog noises push the energy restlessly forward, driving dancers to wild abandon: the track is as effective as it is unconventional. What else would you expect from two of Switzerland's most uncompromising crowd pleasers?"

LICK MY DECK (UK)
Artist:
KIYAMA, AKIKO
Title:
Fungi Reworked
Label:
LICK MY DECK (UK)
Format:
12"
Price:
$11.50
Catalog #:
LMDRMX 001EP
"The dark and twisted throb of Inxec's 'Poisoned Truffle' remix of 'Fungi' hits you with a sub low bassline that rocks back and forth building into a pulsating infectious beat. On the flip side, M_nus stalwart JPLS has evolved 'The Misidia Monarchy,' stripping it down to its bare essentials with a series of syncopated minimal beats creating a journey of funk with an intense military edge."
