Black Truffle announce Undercurrent, the new LP from the long-running Milanese duo of Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti. Following on from high-profile releases on Boomkat Editions and Shelter Press ((SHELTER 080LP, 2017) in the last few years, the eight untitled pieces making up Undercurrent continue the pair's hypnotic and disorientating practice of improvisation based on tape loops. Often sitting halfway between electro-acoustic technique and beat-based production, the music of Bellows obliquely recalls aspects of hip-hop, dub, and techno while skewing their rhythmic foundations. While consistent with the distinctive language the duo has developed over the last decade, Undercurrent moves away from the explicit references made to club music in their recent releases. It presents a suite of pieces that are markedly more minimal, at times reminiscent in their haunted introspection of the legendary Tolerance records on Vanity Records. The pieces here often dwell for minutes at a time on single repeating tones, reverberating like distant bells in desolate landscapes of looped tape hiss. Where previous releases were primarily based on samples, Undercurrent uses recordings of the duo playing various instruments (guitar, drums, synthesizer) cut into tape loops and then used as the bases for song-length tracks, each of which establishes a central repeating motif while also opening up on close listening to reveal multitudes of improvised detail and subtle shifts in tone, texture, and tempo. Beginning with the mournful sliding tones and obscured fragments of field recordings on the opening track, the album moves from lush synth pads to super-minimal pings and haunted drone. On "6" and "7", spacious, hanging guitar figures give the music an elegiac quality recalling the work of Dean Roberts and Ielasi's own earlier guitar-based music (such as the classic Gesine (HAPNA 021CD), released on Häpna in 2005). The record subtly builds to its final track, which works the barest of elements -- a slowed-tone loop of steel drums, a distant whistle, beeping electronics -- into a piece somehow imbued with a quiet grandeur, a fitting conclusion to a record that, like all of the duo's work, is both sonically exploratory and immediately accessible.

Italian electro-acoustic composers Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti reconvene their unique Bellows collaborative project for their new album Strand on Shelter Press. Continuously drawing a hypnotic maze with albums on Boomkat Editions (BKEDIT 012LP, 2015), Entr'acte, and Ielasi's cult Senufo label, Bellows offers their first album on Shelter Press with Strand. Clocking right under 40 minutes, Strand is direct and disorienting. With eight tactile but distant untitled tracks, the album convokes a complex sound palette between acousmatic sound and fractal beats. Recorded in Milano at their very own Standard recording studio, Strand marks a shift in Bellows' previous recording process, bringing more music gear on the table: tapes, modular synthesizers, effects, and samples. Captured live over the course of four days of improvised sessions, the album floats between ghostly melodies, musique concrète, and analog electronics. Echoing with the artwork by Amsterdam-based artist Louis Reith, whose collages made of found black-and-white images are disrupted by bold geometric constructions, the album is disorienting and fascinating, seated right in between the challenging world of electro-acoustic and a more welcoming beat-oriented territory. Italian electro-acoustic maestros Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti aka Bellows serve up an engrossing, labyrinthine LP of freeform concrète dub. Rustl is Bellows' fourth side, following a critically acclaimed trio of albums released since 2007 for Entr'acte, Planam and Kning Disc, and also follows Boomkat Editions' last release, by another Milanese artist, Lorenzo Senni, which was coincidentally also mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi (BKEDIT 010LP). In a slight change from Bellows' usual working method, Rustl represents a nimbly frayed sound much closer to what they do in a live situation. Using a few cassette players with tape loops animated by a couple of effects and recorded direct to two-track tape with no overdubs or mixing, they improvise ten viscous, amorphous plays framed by deep, bubbling subs, skittish percussions, and wheezing ferric abstractions with the most uncanny grasp of dub space. Their haptic, small sounds reveal tiny new sleights and discordant quarks with every listen, offering something more akin to a petri dish of live, kinetic cultures than the more fixed forms of their previous slabs. "Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti, two musicians from Italy with an extensive solo activity, started the Bellows project together in 2006 and released their first CD in 2007. Their second release, an LP available now on PLANAM, was recorded in November 2009 in Tübingen, Germany. Quite different from the first, this new project was developed around the simple technique of cutting/destroying and amplifying vinyl records with contact microphones, creating new grooves and physical loops while capturing the sounds on a Revox tape machine with long tape loops. No further transformations or processing were applied even if a couple of effect pedals and simple sine waves were sometimes used too. The result is a sort of very atmospheric and modern-electronic music as if these sonorities were recorded at the beginning of the last century on 78rpm shellac records. The sleeve features the original artwork by Italian artist Amedeo Martegani. Edition limited to 250 copies."
