Se (in) de bos is a slow-paced 60 minute piece performed by Vvolk and composed by Stijn Cools. While getting deeper in the sound of Vvolk, the perception of time fades. It is astonishing how improvised music can create such a timeless, and calming experience for the listener. This is the third album in the Book Of Air series, as part of the Granvat platform curated by the brothers Stijn and Bert Cools. As in the first Book Of Air album Fieldtone (SR 412LP, 2015) and the second, Vvolk (SR 413CD/LP, 2016), the parameters of time and sound are again widely present. This time the three interwoven bass lines give the deep drive and foundation of the sound, completed with a layer of acoustic instruments and sparkling chords on top. Se (in) de bos is inspired by the fluctuation objectivity of our daily observations. Vvolk investigates performing and improvising music, in close relation to present time: what are the possibilities in playing music, when changes in this music pass by unnoticed? How do we as musicians relate to the running time of a performance? This clearly challenges the improvising musicians, and makes audience and performers discover new territories in collective improvisation. Book Of Air/Vvolk is known for its "whole night laying down" concert, and is one of the only acoustic ambient orchestras in the world.

Book Of Air present Vvolk. Inspired by the slow tempo and invisible motion of nature; how the seasons pace without sudden turns, slow and gentle. Seemingly still, yet always in motion. Book Of Air is a series of bundled compositions, this being the second chapter. Opposed to the first quintet release Fieldtone (SR 412LP), the music out of the Vvolk series is played by a group of 18 improvisers with roots in jazz and classical music. The group investigates performing and improvising music, in close relation to present time; what are the possibilities in playing music, when changes in this music pass by unnoticed? How do we as musicians relate to the running time of a performance? How does our hearing and memory react to these slow changes? As a result, Vvolk lets the listener experience music which is less perceived in the present time, but rather occurs in our memory of the past. This clearly challenges the improvising musicians, and makes audience and performers discover new territories in collective improvisation. Vvolk is performed by Stijn Cools - drums; Indre Jurgeleviciuté - kankles; Benjamin Sauzereau - electric guitar; Bert Cools - electric guitar; Nathan Wouters - double bass; Laurens Smet - double bass; Hendrik Vanattenhoven - double bass; Ruben Machtelinckx - electric guitar; Fruz Tonteling - harmonium; Wout Gooris - Rhodes; Niels Van Heertum - euphonium; Thomas Jillings - tenor saxophone; Viktor Perdieus - tenor saxophone; Erik Bogaerts - alto saxophone; Frans van Isacker - alto saxophone; Mathieu Robert - soprano saxophone; Stefan Bracaval - flute; Sep François - drums and melodic percussion.

The sounds found in nature can have a very slow groove. A groove embedded by silence, so slow it can almost only be felt while spending a few hours at sea, on a forest trip, in open fields... It is this groove and the "silence" of nature that inspired the Fieldtone compositions. The music is performed by an ensemble of string instruments (kanklės, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, double bass) supplemented with drums. Book of Air's series of bundled compositions exploring the parameters of sound and time begins with Fieldtone. The title refers to "roomtone," which is the "silence" recorded at a location or space when no music is played or dialogue spoken. Every room is different, and these recordings always carry their unique character. The compositions of Fieldtone are inspired by the tempo and sonic textures of specific natural locations. By embedding this silent slowness of sound found in nature into the compositions, the details of the sounds played become much more prominent. In this way the silence itself amplifies the sounds that are played, and will also amplify the room surrounding the listener. Stijn Cools: drums and compositions; Indre Jurgeleviciuté: kanklės; Benjamin Sauzereau: electric guitar; Bert Cools: electric and acoustic guitars; Nathan Wouters: double bass.
