LP version. After a solid run of five studio albums and two double live albums, Psychedelic Backfire I and II, (both 2019), Elephant9 had taken their groovy mix of high energy rock and power jazz as far as they could. In this respect their previous album Arrival of The New Elders (2021) came as a welcome and most timely addition to their recorded output. More varied, mature and reflective, they were as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented. Mythical River is molded much in the same way and a natural follow-up, with six stellar new compositions by keyboard maestro Ståle Storløkken, bookended by two short cosmic snippets. From the hypnotic and magical to the razor sharp and polyrhythmic, this is yet another strong group effort from a trio on top of their game. Comparisons have been made with bands dating as far back as the sixties, but with Arrival of The New Elders and Mythical River, Elephant9 appear as a thoroughly contemporary, timeless and even futuristic sounding band. Mythical River was recorded and mixed by previous Dungen producer Mattias Glavå. Ståle started his musical journey in Veslefrekk with Jarle Vespestad and Arve Henriksen in the '90s, soon morphing into Supersilent with Helge Sten on board. He´s also a member of Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns, Møster!, and Humcrush, and have collaborated with a number of artists, most notably Motorpsycho. Nikolai is also a member of Bigbang, Needlepoint, and Band of Gold, and have appeared on a couple of hundred records. The same goes for Torstein, an associate member of numerous bands ranging from pop and soul to free jazz. But Elephant9 has always been their special baby.

In this respect, Arrival Of The New Elders comes as a welcome and most timely addition to their recorded output. More varied, mature and reflective, don't let the self-ironic (?) title mislead you, they are as groovy as ever, but more structured and less jam oriented, with the longest track clocking in around the seven-minute mark. Rather short, by their standards. Having built a solid live reputation even before their brilliant 2008 debut Dodovoodoo, the trio boasts what is probably the strongest rhythm section in Norway, complemented with keyboard magician extraordinaire, the one and only Ståle Storløkken. And boy, does he excel himself on this album, notably with more focus on the Rhodes than before. That said, this is nothing if not another strong group effort from what has been a very tight unit straight from the outset. Seven brand new compositions from Storløkken and one from Nikolai Hængsle make way for what Rune Grammofon consider to be their finest and most cohesive album to date. Arrival Of The New Elders was recorded by trusted stalwart Christian Engfelt, with early Dungen producer Mattias Glavå handling the mixing duties. Ståle started his musical journey in Veslefrekk with Jarle Vespestad and Arve Henriksen in the '90s, soon morphing into Supersilent with Helge Sten on board. The same goes for Torstein, an associate member of numerous bands ranging from pop and soul to free jazz. But Elephant9 has always been their special baby. Personnel: Ståle Storløkken - Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, grand piano, Eminent 310, Mellotron, Continuum; Nikolai Hængsle - electric bass, electric and acoustic guitars; Torstein Lofthus - drums, percussion.

Double LP version. Elephant9 was already established as a vital live favorite on the Norwegian scene -- due to a number of energetic and enthusiastically received concerts -- before their highly-acclaimed debut album Dodovoodoo was released in May 2008 (RCD 2075CD). 11 years later, and after another four studio albums, it was about time to properly document this live force in the form of not only one album, but two double albums. Indeed, the very limited, vinyl-only Live at the BBC album was released in 2011 (RLP 2118LP), but this time the band booked a four-day residency at the intimate Kampen Bistro in Oslo and invited old friend Reine Fiske -- a vital presence on previous albums Atlantis (RCD 2134CD/RLP 3134LP, 2012) and Silver Mountain (RCD 2174CD/RLP 3174LP, 2016) -- along for two of the evenings. Everything was recorded in front of enthusiastic crowds and later mixed by Christian Engfelt, another trusted collaborator. It's a rough warts-and-all mix, with no overdubs, repairs or edits. Tracks are picked from all their albums, often given lengthy workouts with room for improvisation. The trio is extremely tight and telepathic, with Ståle as the obvious soloist, but it's worth to mention the drummer for a change, Torstein being a powerhouse that truly shines on these recordings.

It's not often a "jazz" band take the big step from the club scene to a 1300 capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band. Often being named Norway's best live band -- surely quite rare for an instrumental band -- they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles. On Greatest Show On Earth, their fifth studio album, Elephant9 is back to the core trio of their first two albums; Ståle Storløkken, Nikolai Hængsle, and Torstein Lofthus, three of Norway's finest musicians. The Greatest Show On Earth displays some truly astonishing playing and is a more dynamic, structured and focused album with all tracks clocking in around the six-minute mark. It's also very much a trio effort where all members are equal, and not only a vehicle for a soloist. Ståle Storløkken (keyboards) is widely considered the most inventive keyboard player on the Norwegian scene, his playing with bands like Supersilent, Humcrush, Motorpsycho, Terje Rypdal, and countless others being firm testament to this. Nikolai Hængsle (bass) is since long a member of popular rock group Big Bang as well as Ketil Møster's quartet Møster!, Needlepoint, and Band Of Gold. Torstein Lofthus (drums) is probably the most in demand session drummer in Norway.

At the same time as their triumphant and memorable concert with Motorpsycho in London in November 2010, Elephant9 popped into BBC for a live session for their "Jazz On 3" program. Widely considered to be one of Norway's best live bands, this album also shows the high degree of musicianship in this trio, all tracks being first-takes and without any editing whatsoever. Elephant9 is Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Humcrush) on Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, Nikolai Eilertsen (Big Bang) on bass and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums.

This is the second full-length album by Norway's Elephant9. DodoVoodoo (RCD 2075CD), the debut from this Hammond-driven power trio, received excellent international reviews upon its release in 2008. Already a firm favorite on the Norwegian and European live scene due to top-notch musicianship, a high energy level and very enthusiastically-received concerts, they once again deliver the goods on record with Walk The Nile. Sporting five originals from Storløkken and one from Eilertsen, this is a general improvement on the debut, as good as that one was. Again being an all-analog recording co-produced by Christian Engfelt at Oslo's Grand Sport Studios, it has a gorgeous, organic, late-'60s/early '70s feel, combining elements from rock, jazz, psychedelia, funk and prog. Ståle Storløkken is widely considered to be the most inventive and musically creative keyboard player to spring out of the fertile Norwegian jazz scene, his playing with Supersilent, Humcrush, Terje Rypdal, Nils Petter Molvær and countless others being firm testament to this. Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen, on electric bass, was first known to the Norwegian public through his playing with popular rock group Big Bang, and later chart-topping pop group The National Bank. Torstein Lofthus is an extremely versatile drummer who has done a lot of session work as well as playing in jazz, soul and rock bands, most notably Shining.

Already a firm live favorite on the Norwegian scene for a couple of years due to a handful of highly energetic and very enthusiastically received concerts, the trio of Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent, Humcrush), Nikolai Eilertsen (The National Bank) and Torstein Lofthus (Shining) on drums finally deliver their debut album. Ståle Storløkken is widely considered to be the most inventive and musically creative keyboard player to spring out of the Norwegian jazz scene. On DodoVoodoo he mostly concentrates on organ and electric piano, giving the album a late '60s, early '70s feel with traces of rock, jazz, prog and psychedelia. This, in combination with a young rhythm section that comes mostly with a rock background, gives it a fresh and contemporary edge. Nikolai Eilertsen was first known to the Norwegian public through the rock groups Big Bang and The National Bank, which also includes Morten Qvenild from Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and In The Country as well as Jaga Jazzist brothers Lars and Martin Horntvet. Torstein Lofthus is an extremely versatile drummer who has done a lot of session work as well as playing in jazz, soul and rock bands, most notably Shining, being the only member still in the band along with founder Jørgen Munkeby. DodoVoodoo was recorded live in Grand Sport Studio, the same analogue facility where Scorch Trio records.
