"Hula were founded in Sheffield in 1981. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fish and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They must be Russians, Clock DVA, The Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt and Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) Hula recorded the impressive debut album Cut From Inside with Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko). Ingredients like cut ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals blended together into a unique white funky sound. Murmur was the band's second album and came out on Red Rhino in 1984. This was also the time of Hula's great singles -- 'Fever Car', 'Get the Habit' and 'Walk on Stalks of Shattered Glass' were all released around that time. In 1986, a more ambient sounding live album was released: Shadowland. The same year saw the release of 1000 Hours -- a specially priced double album containing a live concert from Amsterdam, and a whole LP full of new songs, partially recorded in The Netherlands, and partially in the band's hometown Sheffield. As usual, this was remastered by Martin Bowes for this first ever release on CD."

Shadowland was published by Red Rhino in 1986 and was a different beast to the previous LPs. The recording was made at a special event: The Sheffield Arts Department commissioned Hula to put together a performance to include certain sound sculptures featured in the Arts Council's touring Noise In Your Eye exhibition. The two long tracks are much more abstract than the songs Hula recorded before and show a more experimental side of this outstanding group. The same year also saw the release of a 12" single named Black Wall Blue. All three tracks are included as bonuses here on this CD. Again, this was remastered by Martin Bowes of Attrition."

These two long players were followed by an ambient album called Shadowland and a live double LP entitled 1000 Hours. Voice was to be the band's last album and came out on Red Rhino in 1987. It is a much bigger and cleaner production than its predecessors and was produced and engineered by the creme de la creme of its time: Daniel Miller, Robert Gordon, John Fryer, Paul Kendall and others. Two singles were lifted off the album, 'Cut Me Loose' and 'Poison', both perfect examples of electronic industrial pop. A year earlier, another 12" was released entitled Freeze Out, it is also included in this first time on CD re-issue. After the album, Hula recorded one more 12" for Wax Trax and then fell silent. Let's hope for new Hula material to come out in the near future."

One year earlier, the first EP under the name Hula was released, entitled Black Pop Workout. It was mostly recorded at Cabaret Voltaire's Western Works studio. This re-issue collects all of Hula's earliest works prior to the seminal second album Murmur. Remastered by Martin Bowes for this CD."

Hula formed in November 1980 and hailed from Sheffield, home of such electronic luminaries as The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, and Chakk, to name but a few. Hula members Ron Wright, Alan Fish, and Mark Albrow allegedly lived with Cabaret Voltaire in an apartment aptly named the "Hula Kula." Hula's second album Murmur was released in 1984, only a year after its predecessor Cut from the Inside, and what a tour de force it is. Taking in elements of found sounds, cut-up, primitive sampling and industrial paranoia, they sculpted an unsettling but rhythmic mélange of sound. In part industrial funk, elsewhere, an atmospheric stew of dissonance and rhythm. Murmur is now reissued for the first time in nearly 30 years on vinyl in a limited edition of 300 copies on clear blue vinyl.
