Alistair Wells (aka Perc) excels at sculpting tonally rich and percussively complex tracks that seem to both enlighten and confront. Here, opener "Death of Rebirth" uses a reliable 4/4 kick drum throb to orienting the listener in a glassy, metallic labyrinth. On "Negative Space," new forms arise at every turn, including a sort of hybridized piano/gamelan tone, the sound of a shuddering assembly line, and snaking delay feedbacks. Dispensing with the A-side's steady pulse, the side-long "Ma" modernizes the industrial-era rhythmic invocations of artists like Z'EV, achieving an almost classical solemnity without sacrificing Perc's usual love for cleverly manipulated electricity.

CLR 040EP

Perc presents a memorable record for CLR. While "Antifunk" is straightforward techno, characterized by Perc's ceaseless sonic experimentation, "Purple" basically breaks with everything heard on CLR before. But even though the beat pattern is unconventional, and even though he uses all kinds of influences from different musical styles, Perc never loses sight of the dancefloor. With this record, CLR releases its first broken beat track and heralds a new, slightly more experimental phase in the musical history of the label.
