"Nearly three years on from their self-titled debut, Psyché return with a new album that reinvigorates and expands their singular blend of groove and psychedelia. The band's name itself -- the ancient Greek word for 'mind' or 'soul' -- signals a deep-rooted love for psychedelic funk, while pointing towards a vast array of Mediterranean influences spanning Southern Europe, the Balkans, Anatolia, and the Maghreb. While their first record explored a mythical, timeless Mediterranean as a sort of 'elsewhere' -- reimagining ancient musical traditions through modern styles and sensibilities -- Psyché II adds a subtle political dimension and shifts the focus toward a wider, more contemporary geography. Here, the Mediterranean becomes a modern lingua franca -- a fluid bridge uniting diverse peoples, cultures, and musical legacies. In this vision, the band's native Naples serves as a vibrant crossroads where sounds from North Africa and the Middle East meet the echoes of distant shores like Brazil and Colombia. The album's core strength is the band's mastery of restraint -- their minimalist style. Veterans Marcello Giannini, Andrea De Fazio, Paolo Petrella, and Roberto Porzio -- all central figures in the Neapolitan scene through projects like Parbleu, Bassolino, and the Nu Genea Live Band -- excel at creating engaging, hypnotic music defined by few elements but deep, pulsating grooves. Their sound traverses cosmic funk and desert blues, cumbia, dub, and jazz, anchored by the use of analogue synths and propulsive basslines. The record gains further international and political weight through collaborations with Ziad Trabelsi on "Hurriya (We Must Resist)", an Anatolian-rock-style celebration of resilience and freedom with lyrics in Arabic, and Merve Daşdemir (formerly of Altın Gün) on "Yallah!", a proud unmasking of duplicity sung in Turkish and built upon the exotic rhythm of a Middle Eastern-inspired dance. Psyché II is the distillation of a journey through cultures and identities: an album where cross-pollination and a nomadic spirit become the tenets of a contemporary sound -- at once rooted in the Mediterranean and open to the world."

"Hurriya (We Must Resist) is a sonic bridge crossing the Mare Nostrum, connecting the shores of Naples and Tunisia. At the heart of this fusion is the voice and soul of Tunisian musician Ziad Trabelsi, whose Arab roots intertwine with the psychedelic, Mediterranean sound of Psyché. In this track, Afrobeat and Arabic sonorities meet to create a hypnotic journey, one where Ziad's oud weaves an evocative groove that gallops like horses in the desert. 'Hurriya' -- the Arabic word for freedom -- is an anthem of resistance and resilience, a dialogue between East and West that dissolves the rigid boundaries of geography and politics."

The year is 1989. Techno's second generation has begun to permeate the globe leading a young Carl Craig to a tiny village in the countryside of Belgium. It is here, undistracted and determined to break out, that Craig encounters one of the country's only drum machines, an Alesis controlled midi-808. In a single session he composes and mixes a handful of records that are still to this day regarded as some of his most raw and explosive contributions to the fabric of electronic music history. Carl revisits this fateful chapter through the lens of a famed cut from his Psyche alias From Beyond, with a "C2 2023 Mix" and remixes from Seth Troxler, Ataxia and Admn, out July 14 on Planet E Communications. The Psyche alias, known for early Transmat releases like Crack\down and Elements, embodied a stripped back, less sample-based yin attitude to the yang of Carl's more aggressive 69 and sampleforward BFC and Paperclip People identities. From Beyond, first released in 1990 via the Crackdown 12" on Transmat, offers an eerie glimpse into the simplistic production that came through Carl's mastery of the 808 and the sonic value of restricting himself to this movement defining tool. This new From Beyond package sees Carl lift and bend the original in his "C2 2023 Mix" alongside a package of remixes from artists near to the hearts of Detroit and the Planet E fold. Seth Troxler brings a subdued acid tinge to the package, while label regular Ataxia pays homage to the source material with a renewed percussive energy, followed by a soulful rework by Admn.

"It all started sometime at the dawn of the '80s by two Canadian brothers, Darrin and Stephen Huss while living with their parents in Edmonton, Alberta. The first and only synthesizer based act in our whole region, were joined by third member Dwayne Goettel and subsequently formed the band Psyche. A combination of horror and electronics that in the area of Western Canada was completely unheard of and would continue to be considered quite shocking until the music finally caught on. When the Huss family moved to Waterloo, Ontario, Darrin and Stephen took time out from their school work to lay down what would become this official debut album of Psyche's music. With fearlessly experimental electro-titles such as 'Children Carry Knives', 'Psychic Vampire', 'Maggots', and 'The Brain Collapses'. Under the disguised names Evan Panic (Darrin), and Anthony Red (Stephen) Psyche, with release on hand prepared themselves for a proper onslaught on the further unsuspecting Canadian audience, and the rest of the world. This 3 album edition of Insomnia Theatre also contains the 4-Track recordings while Dwayne was a member, as well as several rare direct to cassette demos, the tracks of Tales From The Darkside, as well as our now collectable 12" of Thundershowers. Plus the monumental 'Unveiling The Secret' appears in its album version to round out the complete vision of Psyche's early beginnings from 1983 up to this 1986 breakthrough club hit!"
