DC 350EP

12" vinyl version of this 4 track EP, the 4th White Magic release on Drag City. "The Dark Stars EP is succinct and has a more immediate sound than the sprawling landscape and detail of its predecessor, Dat Rosa Mel Apibus, yet still captures the same spirit of depth and exaltation. Mira Billotte's song writing and vocal incantations once again convey an ephemeral, immortal universe of sounds. 'Dark Stars' also has great vocal additions from Doug Shaw that interweave with Mira's commanding voice, plus an excellent Doug Shaw composition called 'Winds.' In addition, Jim White contributes his complimentary and intuitive powers on drums. Tim Koh adds a new layer of strength on bass with intricate lines and just the right emphasis on key parts."

"In our galaxy small regions of space weighing more than about five of our suns exist. They consume nearby gas and stars and nothing ever escapes their grasp. In the centers of large galaxies these regions can weigh as much as several billion suns -- Dark Stars. The Dark Stars EP contains themes of the Universe, and the dark stars that remain unseen in the night sky and within us. They are the infinite holes in the universe and in the human soul, remnants of a supernova. Invisible stars exist if they are massive enough. "White Magic is the songwriting and vocal lyricism of Mira Billotte engaged by the talented likes of 'Sleepy' Doug Shaw, Jim White (Dirty Three), Tim DeWit (Gang Gang Dance), Tim Barnes, Samara Lubelski, Shahzad Ismaily, Jesse Lee, Karen Leblanc and Brad Truax. White Magic's debut full length album Dat Rosa Mel Apibus is an elaborate evolution from the first release. It is a journey which sets forth into an untamed musical landscape, finding the familiar in unusual streams of new sound -- a new music. A music that knows the past, but does not repeat it. Torch songs ride into dark ragas and devotional dub with prophetic resonance. Influences of African and tropical guitar rise and reel through the harmony. The album is a movement of great proportion, exploring the emotional and the spiritual to unbounded and sublime depths."

"White Magic was magically formed from the ashes in Brooklyn, NY (a beautiful community of freaks making new sounds). The roots are in Maryland and Massachusetts. The sounds are of ritual and prayer, parts of an old piano, and the prophesy of a new consciousness in music and in peace we come from the Sun. White Magic is influenced by Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Karen Dalton, Love, Great Society, Sun Ra, Eric Satie, The Fugs, The Zombies and all good music of the world."
