"In the summer of 2023, Japanese artist and composer
Hideki Umezawa
and Italian sound artist
Giuseppe Cordaro
came together on the small island of Stromboli that sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the north coast of Sicily. The island is home to Mount Stromboli, an active volcano that has been in almost continuous eruption for the past 2,000+ years. Supported by Marosi Festival and Liminaria /Interferenze, the two engaged in a deep listening to the muttering, grunting and whispering of this energetic environment. They set to the task of recording the terrarum murmur, in Latin, which loosely translates to the 'murmur of the land.'
Terrarum Murmur
is a sonic meditation on planetary vibrations, earthly time, and hidden frequencies. Composed collaboratively by Giuseppe Cordaro and Hideki Umezawa, the album blends modular synthesis, granular textures, and field recordings into an immersive soundscape that shifts between the organic and the imaginary. The work unfolds slowly, like geological strata, drawing inspiration from deep listening practices, tectonic movement, and the subtle murmurs of the natural world. It is both a reflection on distance -- cultural, physical, and temporal -- and a poetic attempt to bridge those spaces through sound. This work, which marks the first step of the project 'Paroxysms. Sounds and other volcanism' a collaboration between Marosi and Liminaria/Interferenze, represents an attempt to open a space of investigation that can nourish future research directions on volcanic phenomena and other 'extreme' territories through the device of sound art."
