The track "Horrific Object" fuses Nick Cave & The Birthday Party's swaggering jazz-blues pulse and the lean menace of early PJ Harvey with a vocal narrative reminiscent of an early 20th century horror short story (think: Arthur Machen on vibes). The song concerns a writer who is given the eponymous "horrific object," a thing which is somehow encoded with a critique of the writer's very existence. "Horrific Object" was originally written and recorded to accompany a sculpture of the same name which Mellors made for the 2020 Busan Biennale exhibition in South Korea. The B side, "Irrigating Hell," is about another kind of horror -- that of displacement. The song ruminates on a move to Los Angeles and combines imagery of ecological, car and career-based catastrophe with a more industrial and textured landscape. Art by Tala Madani. Co-release with The Henning Christiansen Archive. In November 17, 2019, a six-hour performance was undertaken in the car park of The Box gallery in Los Angeles as a part of the Henning Christiansen/Ursula Reuter Christiansen exhibition, THEY WON'T SURVIVE WITHOUT THE BIRD SONGS. Thørbjorn Reuter Christiansen, son of Ursula and Henning, developed a timeline for the performance which was essentially designed to encompass a contemporary community of like-minded artists that spans generations and continents. The resulting performance included archival recordings taken from the H.C. Archive, which houses a vast collection of compositions, scores and correspondence of the late Christiansen. This limited-edition double-LP collects edited highlights from the day capturing the unique and somewhat unsettling atmosphere provoked by a diverse range of performances. Thørbjorn Reuter Christiansen developed a new action where he performed a sound piece on iconic instruments of Henning's alongside recorded sounds of his father. "The New Sound of the Living Dead": Bjørn Nørgaard presented two new iterations of some of his historical actions; Homage to Henning and Joseph, Manresa, a piece he first collaborated on with Henning Christiansen and Joseph Beuys at Galerieleri Schmela in Düsseldorf in 1966, and The Cake, a live construction of a monolithic yet impermanent sculpture meant to decay over time. Along with this he did a reading of a new piece of writing, "The Origin of the Future". Mai Dengsøe Hansen performed "EURASIENSTAB fluxorum organum op. 39", a piece for organ that Henning scored and used as the soundtrack for the film Eurasienstab, with Joseph Beuys. The BOX gallery founder Mara McCarthy, along with her father, the notorious Los Angeles artist, Paul McCarthy and Chiara Giovando performed "Knock Harder", a 20-minute improvisation that loosely recalls "Knocking", a sound scape Henning used repeatedly throughout many of his own compositions. Chiara and Mara can be heard singing and playing a selection of small instruments, while Paul methodically slammed the back door of the gallery with a piece of scrap 2x4 pinewood -- a kind of dedication to the monotony of Fluxus. Mark Harwood, the founder of experimental label Penultimate Press, performed an improvised musical protest incorporating fire, rhythm, and chaos alongside field recordings of the civil unrest in Chile that he collected occurred just prior to the opening of this exhibition. Ultra-deluxe set; two LPs held together with a printed rubber band, four large full-color double-sided art cards documenting the performances, a substantial booklet/catalog about the exhibition and a large poster featuring a drawing by Paul McCarthy made during the performance; edition of 500 copies.

Johanna Went is a pioneering performance artist best known for her wild stage performances with hand-sewn costumes and live musical backing from the likes of Z'EV and K. K. Barrett of The Screamers. Went moved to Los Angeles from Seattle in the late 1970s, and quickly began to generate a cult following as a performer, headlining venues such as Hong Kong Café, the Whisky, and Club Lingerie. For more than ten years, Went was known as an innovative performance artist, particularly for the visual richness of her on-stage characters. She was equally renowned for her use of live improvised music that crossed over from jazzy rock grooves and jungle beats to electronic soundscapes and industrial noise. And always, above all the wild, driving music: Went's completely stream-of-consciousness vocals. Hyena, originally released on Posh Boy Records in 1982, harnessed this live power into studio recordings, which have now been remixed and remastered by Went's long-time collaborator and musical director, Mark Wheaton. Postmodern artist, dancer, choreographer, and writer Simone Forti originally wrote the Hippie Gospel Songs in 1969/70, around the time of the Woodstock Festival. She explains: "before coming to California where I started working and performing with Charlemagne Palestine and studying Tai Chi at the California Institute of the Arts, I had spent a year in Woodstock, New York, stoned in the woods. Now with Charlemagne at the piano I ran in circles and figure eights." The seven songs on the record were recorded in 2012 during Forti's exhibition Sounding at The Box, Los Angeles. This Box Editions release on 10" blue vinyl features an etching of Forti's Illuminations Drawing (1972) on side B and is accompanied by a 16-page color book with images of the original sheet music scored by artist, musician, and Forti's long-time collaborator Charlemagne Palestine. LAFMS BOX BOX documents every performance from the exhibition Beneath the Valley of the Lowest Form of Music - The Los Angeles Free Music Society 1972-2012 at The Box, Los Angeles in 2012. The Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) is an experimental music collective founded by artists and musicians in Pasadena, California in the early 1970s. Continuously active for 40+ years, they have released over 25 albums on their LAFMS label and have released or appeared on hundreds of albums on various labels all over the world. In 2012, their work was the subject of a major exhibition at The Box that included photographs, visual art work, home-made instruments, recordings, ephemera, film & video. For the six week duration of the show, the gallery hosted many unforgettable concerts that captured the attitude and range of musical styles embodied by the LAFMS. Rebel Dabble Babble: Four Audio Works is a four LP collection featuring audio from Rebel Dabble Babble (2012), a multi-part video work and installation by artists Paul McCarthy and Damon McCarthy. Paul McCarthy has been involved with the Los Angeles Free Music Society for the past 40 years, notably being a member of Extended Organ, one of the "core" LAFMS groups. The project is an abstracted, layered piece, using the rumors of sexual relationships between the cast and crew during the making of Nicholas Ray's 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause as a starting point. The album is a combination of recordings made on the film set and later during the exhibition Rebel Dabble Babble at The Box, Los Angeles. Audio from multiple video projections produced a tonal environment of fragmented speech and physical movement. "Head" is a field recording made by Paul McCarthy while walking around the installation using a cast replica of his head made by Alex Stevens with binaural microphones inside the ears. Made in the studio where Rebel Dabble Babble was filmed, "Bed" features Paul McCarthy as Nicholas Ray, the "Father" character, pushing a bed across the studio floor. "Three" is a 45 minute field recording that documents the simultaneous and layered movements of three people with microphones navigating through the various rooms of the exhibition at The Box gallery. "Seduction" spotlights Elyse Poppers as Natalie Wood/Judy, the lead actress presenting a pillow talk monologue reminiscent of a video work by Vito Acconci, Theme Song (1973).
