FIGUREJAM 007EP
|
The newest joint effort on Figure Jams unites two stalwarts in their own right, both of whom have honed their specific sound over decades. Having the A-Side to himself, Radio Slave goes for the murky and twisted end of the spectrum, forging some seriously hypnotic grooves. Where skeletal claps and soaring synths make an exhilarating uphill rush, its psychedelic sibling's patterns soon lead into a eyes-down experience, predestined to lose oneself completely to. Deetron instead builds on a dry drum framework, then cleverly fills in the space with robotic rhythms and lively synthwork for what's simply a fun tune to follow. He finishes things off more seriously though, sliding in these heavily submerged chords and going for a vibrantly soaring beatdown track.

Chambray and long-time Figure-affiliate Truncate pair up for exciting floor-killers, then Biri goes out with some fresh techno takes. "No Stress" flings things in all directions with an unpredictable, spiraling power work-out. "Trax 4 The Club" pays homage to the its heritage, but shoots way beyond the treaded template. Biri deploys his rigid style of layering sounds which he makes seem fluid and lively. The meticulously shaped Arps on "Snox101" stays a constant thriller, while "Through The Fields" becomes an ambient-leaning excursion through time and space, opening up the body and mind.

Next up in this ongoing series are two equally talented producers from different ends of the spectrum, both sharing their unique viewpoints. Following Elixir (FIGURE 096EP, 2018), Juxta Position reveals his sublime side on two technoid journeys. Keeping it raw and beautiful, the analog lover lets his synths engage in dialog by floating through murky realms. A new face for Figure and one to watch is Pablo Mateo. Taking a likewise subtle and grounded approach, his tunes unfold slowly and tell their own storyline.

Figure Jams enters the next round, setting up a pairing between two hardware-loving, no-frills techno-purists. Both artists build on vibrant, machine-made roughness, yet each leaving their uniquely flavored footprint. Kicking things off is Eindhoven's Albert Van Abbe, whose wide-open soundscapes and searching synths evoke an emotional impact that goes far beyond mere tools. Low-key producer SP-X appears on the flipside, ready to get lost deep within layers of hypnotic loops. Searing percussion, rumbling bass, and dubby synths engage in complex conversation, subtly swelling and swaying but always keeping the groove ever so tight.

Figure Jams is back with another fresh and exciting pairing of artists. This time the record is a collection of pure analog goodness, sparkling ripe with synthesizer magic. TWR72 distill perfection through simplicity in their stripped-back productions. While "Polished" is a pulsating bit of beatless yet captivating clean-cut loops -- lean, dry and punchy, and undeniably driving and hypnotic. Picking up on the synth-heavy theme is St. Petersburg's Aleksey Niktin, aka Nocow. Inspired by the endless Baltic winters, the producer packs his tracks with emotions that feel cold but not icy, engulfing the listener in winching waves of melancholic electronica.

The second release on Figure Jams places the seasoned Swedish sound sculptor Patrik Skoog alongside Abstract Division, a collaborative project of Dutch producers Paul Boex and Dave Miller. The latter deliver a pair of straight-forward tunes that stem from the depths of space. With an intimidating backdrop of menacing and rummaging drones, they carefully create a constant sense of alarming tension that is never lifted. Patrik Skoogs "The Field" is a heavy hitter of immense magnitude that, despite packing a bouncy punch, still stays afloat thanks to its light hats. Another agile alien groove closes the EP, with rides zooming in-and-out.

FIGUREJAM 001EP
|
The first release of Figure's new sublabel series Figure Jams is a split EP by Fabrizio Lapiana and Amotik. The A side is taken up by a pair of Lapiana's irresistibly dense grooves that unmistakably tread in the footsteps of his homeland's highly emotional techno, unafraid of big melodies and injecting just the right amount of twisted acid. This sense of grandeur and space is also reflected in the work of fast-rising producer Amotik. Painting with his very own colors as an equally epic scenery, its bleak and post-apocalyptic landscape is dominated by broken industrial beats and hypnotically swirling synths.
