Rounding up five years of Heist Recordings also means the label are releasing the fifth version of their Roundup. Part IV (HEIST 029LP, 2018) was full of highlights, with Fouk remixing Nachtbraker's anthem "Hamdi" and Alma Negra going all tribal on Nebraska's "Big Plate Chicken". For Part V, Heist displays a lot of new faces that made the label in the past year, bringing a fresh set of combinations and a couple of really nice revisions of the tracks. First up is Detroit Swindle's take on Heist's latest signing, Hugo Mari. They chose to remix "Change Ur Ways", beefing up the dreamy original. They focus on a simple but effective grainy groove and added a twist on the bass to give a more "warehouse" feel to it and play around with the lovely detuned keys and vocal chops of the original to great effect. Alma Negra show you just how loose their limbs are with a Rhodes-filled version of Kassian's acid surprise "Bad Habit", while the full B side is dedicated to Pitto's personal take on Adryiano's classic house track, "Me And You And Her". His version takes the track into a new territory that lies somewhere between Balearic and dreamhouse -- whatever it is, it's got a lovely vibe where the vocal is complemented by airy pads and a touch of acid. Kassian on their turn, have done a great job on taking Pitto's "Treat Me Like A Fool" into 4x4 house territory. They've opted for a sub-heavy club track where reverbed hits and the vocal take turns over a solid house groove. Next up is Adryiano. He's picked Detroit Swindle's moody-but-heavy album track "Cut U Loose" and does what he does best: a steady and nicely distorted, filtered house groove that packs quite a punch. The final track of this compilation really is a great pair of artists: Hugo Mari and Alma Negra. Hugo takes the tropical warmth of "This Is The Place" and adds a subtle punch with a smart percussion loop and some added pressure on the low end. So there you go. Another year, another Roundup. 180 gram vinyl.

The name Hugo Mari might not ring a bell just yet, but this is about to change. He's released a handful of EPs under his former alias Books on Omena and XVI. He's also remixed well-known artists like Afrobeat legend Dele Sosimi and grime master Trim. His Change Ur Ways EP for Heist is soulful, jazzy, deep and energetic with three varied originals and a classic soulful house remix by man of the moment, NDATL label head Kai Alcé.

Kassian is the brainchild of Joe Danvers-McCabe (Danvers) and Warren Cummings (Warren Xclnce). Both are regulars in the underground and wider-reaching London scenes, and the whole EP breathes soul and funk with that dance floor punch you've come to expect from Heist. The Premise EP delivers three originals, each with a hint of soulful, old-school New York house, but with a fresh style and unique character. Finishing the EP is an eccentric and vibey DJ Nature remix. 180 gram pressing, limited full cover.

Alma Negra are back with their new Conversation EP. After releasing Endless Summer EP (HEIST 024EP, 2017), they've been rather busy. They're back on Heist here with three new tracks, supported by an Awanto 3 remix. "Conversation" is a beast of a track; it sits somewhere between a live African drum track, percussive techno and moody Midwest electronics while a relentless kick drum keeps the energy on a haunting level. "This Is The Place" shows a different side of house with Alma's love for dreamy deep house. Finally, "From The Heart" navigates a smart vocal loop topped with strings.

Adding another Dutchie to Heist Recordings' list of exquisite producers, the label presents Pitto. The Late Night Studio Moves is one of varied styles, where Pitto's inspiration from African music, jazzy and soulful samples becomes evident. He finds his "funk" in repetition, clever sample combinations, and combining electronic and live elements in the most organic way. "Late Night Studio Moves" finds its basic groove in an African percussive loop. The track slowly adds elements, chopped African chants and piercing synth hits. The Mole chose to remix this track and he turned it completely upside down, both in vibe and tempo.

Double LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Detroit Swindle present High Life, their second studio album on the duo's own Heist Recordings. The heart of the album was recorded over a three-week period at their Amsterdam studio in March 2017, and the release will coincide with the fifth anniversary of the label. Since forming in 2011, the Dutch duo have carved a unique place for themselves in the scene. Their sound -- which merges references from multiple decades into one smooth aesthetic -- quickly rose to popularity for its careful blend of soul and rhythm, taking cues from their passion for obscure records, with influences ranging from house and funk to Afrobeat and soul. Dynamic live shows and DJ sets afford them a packed touring schedule across the globe, whilst their label Heist Recordings is credited with consistently breaking new artists. High Life explores the intersection of live and electronic music, with much of the improvised material left largely untouched to maintain its organic sensibilities. Detroit Swindle describe the album as an "electronic album with a live approach, combining our love for house, ambient and jazzy harmonics, making it a record interesting for the club, as well as a pleasant album to put on at home." High Life explores stripped back soul and groove driven house over ten glistening productions. Featured on the album are a sun-drenched collaboration with British singer/songwriter Tom Misch and a deep workout with the vocals of trained gospel singer turned house aficionado Seven Davis Jr. on "Flavourism" and Lorenz Rhode who accompanies the duo for their live shows, features on the infectious melodies of "High Life". "Call Of The Wild" incorporates none other than Dutch nine-piece brass band Jungle By Night.

2018 marks Heist Recordings' first step into album territory, releasing the sophomore album High Life from Detroit Swindle (HEIST 001CD/LP). This single features the album cut "Flavourism" with vocals from Seven Davis Jr. Here, the single is presented with remixes by the amazing Pépé Bradock and Boston-to-NYC house duo John Barera & Will Martin. "Flavourism" is as much a throwback track to classic Detroit Swindle territory, as it is a look into their contemporary view on soulful deep house. The vibe is set by Seven Davis Jr.'s distinctive vocals, accompanied by warm "side-chained" pads and a rubbery live synth-bassline.

First full artist EP of 2018 on Heist Recordings. "Me And You And Her" is about as classic as a house track can be -- it's got a sweet, repetitive vocal loop, some semi-grainy but groovy percussion, and a simple piano hook. "Move It, Move It" moves straight into old-school Chicago territory with a raw AF acid bassline. Chicago-bred Jamie 3:26 gives the track a nice old school twist. "Fashion Country Girl" is Adryiano's dystopian view of a world where Dolly Parton gets mangled through an overdrive, then gets distorted, crushed, mangled, deleted, re-added in 8-bit and then crushed again.

Listen to this if you want to hear 2017's best tracks on Heist Recordings by Detroit Swindle, Alma Negra, Fouk, Nachtbraker, Nebraska, and Parker Madicine in one big remix package. The Roundup Part IV marks the end of year four of Heist Recordings and it might be their most varied release yet with some serious Afro funk from Switzerland, electronic soul from Italy, proper old school deep house from the UK, and some Dutch guys adding a bit of swing to the package. For those unfamiliar with the label's annual concept release, The Roundup is a release where each artist that has released in the year gets remixed by another Heist artist from that same year. The label put all the names in a big hat, and draw straws. The result: six different remixes from six of the most intriguing original tracks of the year. Fouk had the honor to rework one of the most euphoric tracks ever to come out on Heist Recordings and certainly one of Nachtbraker's most party-oriented tracks ever: "Hamdi". They flipped the original into a Rhodes-y Afro-tinged jam filled with lovely bleeps, FX, and some great work on the keys. The Detroit Swindle remix of Parker Madicine's "Heartbreaker" is just as dreamy as it is driving, making full use of their synth-cave with an ever-evolving Moog bassline and some great pads on the Arp Odyssey. Alma Negra's "Blacksoul" remix of Nebraska's "Big Plate Chicken" takes the full B side and rightly so. The African drums and chants along with the looped sampling of the original's bleeps give a great groove, but the track really comes alive when the bassline kicks in. The second 12" gives room for Nachtbraker's "Swing" mix of "Can't Hold It" where he lets loose a trippy, sample heavy track with a dustier ambience than your grandmother's living room. Turn it over and you'll find Parker Madicine jazzing up "Afrorleans" and Nebraska throwing in a classic deep house touch on his remix for Fouk. All and all, this is a greatly diverse, sexy, and club-ready package. 180 gram vinyl.

Nebraska's Metaphor To The Floor EP lead track "Affirmation" possesses a subtle build up and release of energy, looping vocals, and dramatic chords. "Aglio e Olio" is a simple yet tasty Italian dish with of just five ingredients -- a great funk/house crossover appeal. Londoner Laurence Guy provides his version of "Aglio e Olio", a dreamier excursion with filtered pads, acid-y licks, and plenty low-end to get you movin'. Nebraska turns the energy up with "Big Plate Chicken", the sort of track you'd imagine Omar S. producing if he would be just a bit whiter, and a bit more British.

Nachtbraker pressed record, San Proper got his inner Mick Jagger on, and behold: "Misses, Madame, Mademoiselle", an up-tempo disco groove with Nachtbraker's touch of loose arrangement, and San Proper's amazing vocals. Producer duo Session Victim re-interpreted it, giving it a great dreamy-but-groovy twist, adding pads and shuffling hi-hats. "Hamdi" is Nachtbraker's most euphoric track to date. With chopped vocals and a teasing build-up, the track breaks down into a lovely chant, adding energy with every bar. The alternate version is an excursion into 808 booty territory, using different chops, alienating loops, and yes, even a siren.

Label heads Detroit Swindle deliver their fourth solo release for the label. The title track is mad of warm subs, galloping hi-hats, and an exotic synth loop that'll get stuck in your head for hours and hours. "Just Not Norma" goes on in a similar manner, built around a few simple keys, with the lovely work of Mark De Clive-Lowe. "Tamarindus Hollandicus" evolves around a bell-like percussion loop and a roaring Moog bass. Willie Burns gets all dark and trippy on his excursion into electro territory. Machinegun-like claps and haunting strings accompany the breakbeat-not-breakbeat and ruthless bassline.

Fouk are back on Heist Recordings with their With Lasers EP. Their new taste for grit and the heavier side of funk is most evident on the opener "F3000", where a thunderous arpeggio is supported by distorted drums and lush synth stabs. "With Lasers" is a classic Fouk track, combining a lovely walking disco bassline and their signature drum programming with, well, lasers. "See You On The Other Side" carefully blends guitar licks, Rhodes-y chords, and vocal chops into a lovely groove. Swedish synth nerds Mount Liberation Unlimited ran with it and transformed it into a dreamy Pepe Bradock-goes-Balearic track.

Alma Negra, four guys with roots in Portugal, Cabo Verde, Italy, and Spain, hailing from Switzerland, present an African influenced EP. "Afrorleans" is a track with Fela's footprint all over it -- a lovely Rhodes jam over a classic Afrobeat, subtly supported by sparse electronic percussion. "Luanda Dub" is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional lamento style from Luanda -- it's a gloomy techno workout with killer bottom end, trippy guitars, spacey vocals, and tribal percussion. "Endless Summer" leans heavy on Rhodes keys, filtered wah-wahs, and African chants. Soulphiction's adds some serious grunts with percussion and a killer bassline.

Milan based Parker Madicine's Voices & Drums EP, with Byron The Aquarius delivering a great jazzy remix. "Heartbreaker" lays down a dreamy but heavy groove, arpeggiating until the airy pads make room for a looser-than-loose groove. "Zawinul" starts in the same manner, rough kick, loose and degraded hi-hats, and dreamy Rhodes chords. The tracks builds with lovely brassy hits and arps. "Placebo" is the most stripped back but high-tempo track, where an airy and delayed bassline does most of the work. Byron The Aquarius reworks "Placebo", flipping the contemplative original into a feel-good showcase of harmonizing melodies.

The Roundup Part III is here: Heist Recordings's annual cocktail party of "Heisty" re-imaginations. With 2016 being their busiest release schedule so far, they've moved up from a 12" and 10" pack to a double 12" pack, with seven artists re-rubbing each other's originals in their most personal way imaginable. Nachtbraker turns Nebraska's sweet and moody "It Won't Be Long" into a raw as hell acid stomper. Ouer and Adesse Versions, deliver a great jackin' take on both their victims and Nebraska adds some disco flavor to Frits Wentink's free handing piano work. Frits, on his turn, gets going with the SP404 to add some dusty vibes to Detroit Swindle's "Future Imperfect" while Detroit Swindle have turned Obas Nenor's down-tempo excursion "Wakee" into an up-tempo Chicago-esque affair, bringing in Crumar Performer for some lively work on the strings. Obas on his turn, gets his MPC fired up and delivers a great mid-west inspired version of "Push It Along". Heist Recordings have had a truly great year and this Round Up is a great conclusion to it. Adesse Versions presents Push It Along EP. "Tout" is built around an ever-evolving arpeggiated synth, a dancehall-esque percussive riddim and lovely pad work. "E To E" is based on a chopped vocal, dancing hi-hats and a rolling bassline. Ge-ology's remix, featuring Marc de Clive-Lowe on keys, flips the high energy of "E To E" into a classic deep house tune. Fierce snares lay down the rhythm on the title track, and a far-away disco sample adds the right dose of funk. "Ebony Roses" is a beat-less groove built around a spoken word vocal with dreamy piano.

Detroit Swindle return home to their own Heist Recordings to releases The Circular City EP, a jubilant record melding the most groove-laden strands of disco, funk, soul and house. To top it all off, Matthew Herbert provides a remix. The Circular City EP brings together tracks for varying dancefloor moments and comes rounded off with a typically inventive remix from one of house music's most extolled veterans. Herbert's remix adds a certain poppy flair to the original as it laces Zilla's sassy croon with mangled synth blobs and hypnotic, circling samples.

"Pollo Con Pollo" is potentially Maurits' most clear attempt at a straight-forward groove, with a lovely dreamy guitar loop running throughout the track. There are two versions of "Intermezz(l)ow" on the B-side, the one being a lovely textured interlude and the other a rough drum workout built around the same theme. Maurits remixes himself, with a great dubbed out acid-tinged flip of "Gotta Act To React".

Obas Nenor's The Ceaper Buing EP features four original cuts and a remix by Swedish Mr. Tophat that navigates somewhere between really weird, and really groovy. "The Doors" has a great filtered funk loop going on with some roughed-up disco percussion, whereas the Tophat remix twists the original into a tribal drum workout. "Glimpse of Light" has some really interesting sampling going on with an almost "rock" feel, but gets more disco with some lovely synth work. "Wakee" slows things down with a summery, Afro-inspired feel. "UV Lights" is perfect "hands-in-the-air" end of the night material.

"Khan's Bargain" will be the go-to track for the more disco-minded listeners out there, with a catchy-as-hell synth line. The remix, courtesy of Tom Noble, goes on a clubbier path, turning the silky smooth original into a distorted house jam. The B-side starts with "The Blues", a perfect example of minimalistic house. "It Won't Be Long" breezes through with a lighthearted arpeggio and some lovely dreamy vocals to set a more emotional vibe.

With a compact collection of synths and drum machines and a fair level of distortion, they succeed in creating their own sound with hints of classic electronic music from Chicago and Detroit. Opener "The Ascent" is the EP's most driving track, while fans of classic Motor City Drum Ensemble will love the dreamy DX7-style chords and cracking acid lines of "Show Off."
