HIDDEN 008EP
|
Five remixes of These Hidden Hands's expansive LP Vicarious Memories (HIDDEN 007LP, 2016). Telefon Tel Aviv offers his reinterpretation of "Glasir"; a solemnly disconcerting reduction of the original. Hypoxia (Drumcell) makes his mark on the beautiful vocalized track "Telepath", featuring Julia Kotowski. On Lustmord's remake of "Socotra", he weaves enveloping celestial melodies and ominous reverberating drones. JK Flesh boosts the energy with his distorted mix of industrial, dub, and power electronics, a spectrally bright reincarnation of "Dendera Light". British producer Death In Vegas patiently exploring serene soundscapes with much depth and color on his mix of "Angkor".

Experimental electronic duo These Hidden Hands return with a single featuring vocals from Lucrecia Dalt. An extrapolation of the ideas explored on the debut album (HIDDEN 002LP), this new single comprises two cuts, leading the listener through abstract sonic terrain. "These Moments Dismantled" a lesson of the vulnerability of musical space juxtaposed with a dense apocalyptic nature. "Variant" is reportedly a self-remix of the A-side. Abrasive layering of complex textures that jerk between tension and release, where a heightened sense of drama seeps through from the frosty low-howl noir of Dalt's vocals. Artwork by Jesse Draxler.

These Hidden Hands (Tommy Four Seven and Alain Paul, aka Shards) resurfaced in 2016 with the collaborative single These Moments Dismantled featuring Lucrecia Dalt, they now present Vicarious Memories, their second full length LP. Vicarious Memories builds substantially upon the sound forged with their self-titled debut album (HIDDEN 002LP, 2013) and brings a considerable new level of detail, complexity, and musicality, which ranges from flowing mellifluous grooves, somber drones, to the outright bizarre and unexpected. Although loosely an instrumental electronic album, the album makes extensive use of guitar and vocals and features prominent guest vocal contributions from underground Berlin based musicians Julia Kotowski and Ale Hop. Vicarious Memories is released via the group's own imprint, Hidden Hundred. Cover art by Norwegian illustrator Anders Røkkum. Pressed as 180 gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold jacket. Includes download code.

Atom TM, Kangding Ray, and Ancient Methods revamp These Hidden Hands' album tracks for the floor. In Uwe Schmidt aka Atom TM's hands, "When Told" becomes a sprung, roiling techno weapon rent with dazzling spatial diffusions and streaking, Deathprod-like synth lines while saving that gloomy vocal for the most crucial moment. With "Diesel" Kangding Ray flexes some brute, driving techno muscle, and Ancient Methods lock "Isopod" down to a determined drone techno march.

Marcel Dettmann, SHXCXCHCXSH, and Old Apparatus follow Vatican Shadow's lead to remix Tommy Four Seven and Alain's These Hidden Hands project. Dettmann's "Laika" mix finds a cool balance of ruggedly stable techno groove and teasing, almost uplifting synth lines; SHXCXCHCXSH's "Kheium" version works on some mutant basement tech-noise grime; Old Apparatus reject rhythms in favor of an epic, widescreen take on "Hidden," rent with sepulchral harmonics to bleedin' scary effect. Pressed on white vinyl.

Over half a decade since their creative partnership was first brought to the public's attention, Tommy Four Seven and Alain reconvene after time spent establishing themselves within their own respective fields to present These Hidden Hands; a musical album that exemplifies the pair's unique approach to production. If the Strix EP saw them channel their energy solely towards the dancefloor, this project sees them at their most visceral, refreshingly embracing the extended format with a vigor akin to that first demonstrated on Tommy Four Seven's debut album for CLR, Primate. From the confrontational textures of opener "Trelesire," to the sonically abrasive "Severed," it's clear that THH are far from just indebted to the innovators of old. The engulfing drama of "When Told" and harrowing tension of "Kheium" showcase their singular approach to sound design and their adept versatility in utilizing both industrial tones and ethereal melodies. "Laika," is a case in point. Scattered rhythms, gauzy synths and rugged atmospheres conjure a distressed nostalgia. "Diesel," which was offered by the pair as the first tantalizing glimpse into the project, melds sparse beats with a soaring, creature-like drone before the ghostly motifs of "Hidden" bring the body of work to a natural close. Edition of 380 copies pressed on 180 gram double vinyl. Includes a download voucher.

Hidden Hundred presents Tommy Four Seven and One Million Mangos Studio engineer and producer Alain as These Hidden Hands. "Ivy" is heavily informed by the romantic dystopia of mid-late '90s IDM and D&B's grander gestures. Vatican Shadow's remix charges the atmosphere with a more driving intent, rolling out with ruggedly offset kicks and jabbing hi-hats while keeping the funereal goth-techno ambience intact. Lakker provides a more broken, complex take with splintered drums and amorphous bass shapes. Edition of 300 individually numbered, hand-stamped copies pressed to clear vinyl.
