Formed in Stoke on Trent in 1977, northern band Discharge changed the British punk scene forever with a distinctive brand of hardcore, making minimalistic mu-sic with heavily distorted guitar, drone-like bass, shouted anarchic vocals and a style of propulsive drumming, known as D Beat. This new edition of the legendary London debut, unleashed at Camden's Music Machine in October 1980, is a blistering set that captures the group at their freshest, the audience response so great that they revisit "Realities Of War," "Fight Back," "Tomorrow Belongs To Us," and "They Declare It" for the full-throttle encore. Essential Discharge!

Having played with the likes of influential movers and shakers on the anarcho-punk scene Antisect and Icons of Filth, on their first full-length LP, Birmingham's Sacrilege established themselves as a unique force to be reckoned with, wreaking havoc on what could be classified as sonic tropes belonging to a spectrum of subgenres dealing in the extremes: hardcore, doom, and thrash. Fronted by Lynda 'Tam' Simpson and her seizure-inducing spells injected with a fierce, sociopolitical-cum-mythopoeic banshee bite (but not wanting to understate the line-up of Damian Thompson on guillotine-quick/milkshake thick guitars) -- the six-track onslaught is every bit as crushing as the title suggests. From depraved dungeon synth-scapes on opener Lifeline to the planet-flattening funeral toll of "The Closing Irony," one question remains: One riff to rule them all? Yes.

Recorded in Los Angeles in 1982, 13.13 exists as document to the pandemonium of specters and potential serial killers who twisted the California Dream into a waking nightmare as they snaked through the boulevards, back yards and basements of a sun stroked paradise turning into a blood-soaked inferno of fear, paranoia, panic and lust killings. Lush musical textures provided by members of seminal art punks The Weirdos -- Dix Denney, Cliff Martinez, and Greg Williams create a hypnotic backdrop to Lydia Lunch's evocative vocals and terrifying lyrics.

If phonophobia can be defined as an overall fear of sound -- what better band can you think of than crustcore titans Extreme Noise Terror to deliver such a fear as though kicking listeners down a shoot that leads to a lifetime sentence in Room 101. The album contains the band at their best, which sounds and feels like the worst thing you've ever encountered on earth: bolt-sputtering vocals on "Pray To Be Saved" and "Self-Decay." Grim guitars groan as they gut the intestines from one's malnourished belly for a final meal on "Knee Deep in Shit" and "Moral Bondage." Rhythms that emerge from nowhere like fleets of demonic hailstone with drywall nails in place of the hail on "Third World Genocide." Only a classic band like Extreme Noise Terror can have so much influence, yet by comparison of that influence, such little musical output can sound like being cracked apart and smashed together in equally, exhilaratingly evil measures.

In It For Life was the suitably titled 1989 LP by post-apocalyptic voltage mongrels Extreme Noise Terror and Filthkick, a Birmingham-based hardcore punk group, equally as championed by John Peel as ENT were. "Work For Never" and "Damaging Noise" performed here by the former to the same exhilarating degrees as Mount Vesuvius erupts is an unholy rumble of double-pronged vocal aggression and rampages of feedback that could burst boils not even formed yet. A vampire bullied into submission and burning in the sun. Filthkick follows with "Cime Without A Name," an endless, ominous dirge before being mauled by a savage dog. "Between The Lines" jumping in and out of focus, but never losing any of its ferocity with blistering speed and sandblasting action.

Danish psychobilly trio Nekromantix formed in Copenhagen in 1989, melding heavy metal and some Goth underpinnings in their style. After a well-received debut via Tombstone, the band reached greater heights with Curse Of The Coffin for Nervous Records, perceptively produced by Micky Mutant of Meteors fame. With frontman Kim Gaarde playing a coffin-shaped bass, Pete Sandorff shredding speed-metal riffs on his guitar, and drummer Peek never letting the pace drop below feverish, Curse Of The Coffin is a wild ride that redefined the psychobilly genre, making Nekromantix leading lights of the second wave. A true killer!

London psychobilly beasts Skitzo began in the mid-1980s as the Electros, when vocalist Phil O'Connor began screaming with bashing drummer, Rod Connor, bassist Tony Bronham, and guitarist Tony McVey; by the time they signed to Nervous Records for this brilliantly ghoulish debut LP, drummer Steve Tomlinson was on board. Along with freaked-out originals like "Witching Hour," "Possessed," and the crazed title track, there are fun covers of "Lonesome Train," "Caldonia," and "Your Cheating Heart," all transformed the psychobilly way. If you like your psychobilly with the emphasis on the psycho, this one's for you!

Originally released in 1980, Stiv Bators first solo effort. Mr. Bators was the man who destroyed Rocket From The Tombs, from which he hijacked half the members to found one of the most influential American punk bands to have existed, The Dead Boys. Stiv has turned in his broken teeth for a more power pop oriented solo career. This is not an album recorded by a has-been former punk idealist; instead, it's a true step forward into another unknown arena packing all the glare and attitude that remained from the last. 50th anniversary reissue.

Away from the grandeur, and although their line-up history is full of potholes -- the key to unlock this classic release by Extreme Noise Terrors, Holocaust in Your Head is the double-edged vocal prongs from ENT founders Phil Vane and Dean Jones and the black-avalanche guitars of Steve Hurley (not forgetting the drum stool occupied by Mick Harris, soon to be of Scorn during the recording of this album, and Doom's Tony "Stick" Dickens). "Statement" is as good as any opening gambit for a band -- a trail of sludge setting fire to itself consuming the raw, political ashtray mantras spewed into its thick, corrosive grip. "Another Nail in the Coffin" suitably devastating the senses as a wrecking-ball swings from its chain into the side of a condemned building, brick by brick. Eaten. Buried.

The unissued original recording for their debut album Holocaust In Your Head. How many bands can say they had multiple debut albums? For crustcore sound terrorists Extreme Noise Terror, Holocaust In Your Head: The Original Holocaust, first recording version, continues to excuse itself in being reissued for what must be the last time before the last time. It's no wonder why. "We The Helpless" is every bit as hopeless as it sounds -- a blitzkrieg of wails and nightmarish sonics that tighten themselves around the temples until the eyes turn white. "Statement" will always stand on its own two feet as a perfect set opener and Innocence to Ignorance's unhinged atmospheric armageddon as well as "Use Your Mind"'s sample-sprung assault on the senses are possible indications of where the band could've wound up had their line-up not been walking such a shaky tightrope. Rough as hell? Sure. But if you want to know what it feels like to have the signal input of your skull reflect a separation in the grounding circuit of the flesh from the neck down, then carry on screaming.

A manic clash of guitars, bass and drums beating each other's brains out in the same sonic bullring? Check. Despite already (if a little unbeknownst) being considered crust pioneers, by 1988, Hellbastard had firmly inserted themselves, even proudly so, in between a series of bifurcated genre schisms well-protected by those scene's respected guardians. Their official debut, Heading For Internal Darkness no less perfectly exemplifies that schism. With Wendy V Gill's haunted-cosmos monologues injecting some transcendental light into the neck otherwise being mercilessly ripped to pieces by Scruff and Scotty's spaced-out vocal grunts, opener "We Had Evidence" to the equally arresting elevator-shaft-with-a-mind-of-its-own "Death Camp" to "The Pylons" whip up seriously dark whirlwinds into atmospheric dances of rapid energy and relentless spasms of spellcasting drama. Never mind metal, too punk for anything.

Formed in Lewisham, southeast London, punk band the Business joined the Oi! scene after supporting the Four Skins in 1981. Debut single "Harry May" hit the Indie charts before the group disintegrated, leading frontman Micky Fitz to recruit new members. Then, in 1987, original guitarist Nick Kent joined Fitz for heavy metal side project UK, with former Tank drummer Mark Brabbs, channeling their love of AC/DC, Motorhead, and Rose Tattoo. As Kent goes all-out with the hard rock solos and Fitz aims for the melodic, this is a great slice of the new wave of British heavy metal, and a startling surprise for all Business fans!
