Multi-instrumentalist and composer David John Sheppard presents his first bona fide solo album, Vertical Land. The writer and orchestrator behind the acclaimed State River Widening, Ellis Island Sound, Snow Palms, and Leaf recording artists Phelan/Sheppard, Sheppard began the tracks percussively by inserting pencils into guitars to make false bridges, then hammering the strings with vibraphone mallets, or by applying layers of masking tape to the strings of an upright piano in order to create a raw percussive instrument. Marimbas, glockenspiels, and mountain dulcimers were all attacked with a similar sense of primal reflex until the compositions were gradually built up, only to be stripped back down again in a very painterly process, to reveal new forms, combinations, and colors. For fans of The Cinematic Orchestra, Tortoise, Steve Reich, and Phillip Glass.

Composer and producer Ben Chatwin presents The Sleeper Awakes, his first album to appear under his own name. The Sleeper Awakes follows Chatwin's acclaimed 2013 release as Talvihorros, Eaten Alive, and moves away from the more textured, heavily layered soundscapes of his Talvihorros work into something more succinct and melodically driven. Inspired by the writing of H. G. Wells, the album was made by sourcing a 100-year-old dulcitone and using it extensively alongside modern electronics and synthesis. Written and recorded at Chatwin's home studio in Scotland. For fans of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, and Arvo Pärt.

Ryan Teague is a Bristol-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. His music combines acoustic instrumentation and arrangements with electronic and processed material, often incorporating minimalist, ambient, and electroacoustic styles. Last Known Position is the first single from Block Boundaries (VG 015CD/LP, 2014), Teague's fifth album. It demonstrates a sonic and thematic shift toward a more focused and energized sound. Teague beautifully extends the album version of "Last Known Position" for the EP, taking it into new, unchartered territory to enthralling effect. Remixes come from techno aficionado The Field, Warp's Plaid, and Errors. For fans of Phillip Glass, Max Richter, and Walls.

Hot on the heels of their critically revered 2014 krautrock-meets-Afrobeat longplayer Regions (VG 007CD/LP), Ellis Island Sound's Pete Astor and David Sheppard return with a seven-track mini-album. Inspired by the main flow of Regions, Divisions is another fertile marriage between motorik Mitteleuropa pulse and subtropical guitar- and percussion-textures. This time, however, the emphasis is less on throbbing, NEU!-beat-propelled blow-outs and more on intricate, highly melodic arrangements for guitars, keyboards, and tuned percussion, with a spacious sound palette propelled by polyrhythmic marimbas and xylophones and layered with infectious lead lines and choral vocals -- the latter sourced by Astor and Sheppard from dusty archive recordings and manipulated into subtle, stirring descants on several tracks. Reference points might be the Penguin Cafe Orchestra's "Cutting Branches for a Temporary Shelter," Cluster's Sowiesoso, Steve Reich's Counterpoint compositions, or the juju pop of King Sunny Adé, with EIS taking such implicit influences and molding them into shapes that are distinctive and very much to their own design, a modus operandi that the gentlemanly duo have deployed for the duration of their unhurried but enduring career since 1996.

Ellis Island Sound comprises the duo of Pete Astor (The Loft, Weather Prophets, etc.) and David Sheppard (State River Widening, Snow Palms, etc.). This is the first EP from the band which will be closely followed by their third LP Regions. Described as "Afro-Krautrock," This is a toe-tapping motorik Kraut-pop juggernaut by all accounts. The single features vocals from Radiohead collaborator John Matthias, coming on like an opiated James Brown channeling Damo Suzuki. The EP also features remixes from Fryars and Scott Fraser.

Ellis Island Sound comprises the duo of Pete Astor (The Loft, Weather Prophets, Wisdom Of Harry, etc.) and David Sheppard (State River Widening, Snow Palms, etc.). Regions is the duo's third album since their inception, and it has already been described as "Afro-Krautrock" and "Teutonic High Life." It is possible to detect the influence of Jean Bosco Mwende or King Sunny Ade's guitars, along with the polyrhythmic ensemble force of Fela Kuti's Africa 70 and T-Funk-period Talking Heads. Sometime-Radiohead-collaborator John Matthias applies vocals to five tracks, coming on like an opiated James Brown channeling Damo Suzuki. For fans of Can, Fela Kuti, Talking Heads and Neu!.

Block Boundaries is the new album from minimalist composer Ryan Teague building on his previous releases for Type, Sonic Pieces and current label Village Green. Inspired by the theme of psychogeography, the record fuses acoustic instrumentation with electronic and processed material, taking the listener on a hallucinogenic Ballard-ian journey through from the thrumming urban activity of New York, Amsterdam and London. Brooding opener "Site & Situation" sets the tone with hypnotic guitar and mallet chimes, emotive cello swells and surging bass synth, "Last Known Position" comes on like a lost Tangerine Dream jam session, spiraling arpeggios and oscillating pulses, while "Liminal Space" introduces driving percussion around mesmeric synth pulses and a shimmering piano progression. Closer "End of the Line" brings the journey to an end in an introspective mood -- a wavering synth figure cut against wistful drone washes that fade into the distance. Block Boundaries is a masterful achievement of melody, form and texture that rewards more with every captivated listen and will assuredly secure Ryan Teague's place alongside his acclaimed contemporaries such as Nils Frahm, Jon Hopkins, Emeralds and Hauschka.

Angèle David-Guillou is best-known for a brace of critically-acclaimed electro-acoustic dream-pop albums under the alias Klima. She is also known for her signature contributions to cult Anglo-French ensemble Piano Magic and for cameos on albums by the likes of The Go! Team and Peter Astor. Angèle's debut album under her given name is a largely instrumental work, predominantly consisting of melodically opulent, emotionally-compelling compositions for the grand piano. Inspired by the direct, elemental melodies of French folk and the flamboyant arrangements of European and Latin American Baroque music, Kourouma is hallmarked by a purity of expression. There are other influences at play on Kourouma: the clear, mellifluous lines of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman's Schulwerk (Music for Children) and the intertwining counterpoints and percussive patter of Moondog are consistent touchstones.

With a background in electronic music, experimenting with samplers and varied live instruments during the '90s, Adrian Corker also developed a parallel career developing film scores. Interested in the way changes in different spaces affected the recordings and performances, Corker chose to record in numerous locations from his local pub to Valgeir Sigurðsson's legendary Greenhouse Studios in Iceland. Raise combines tranquil moments of expansive beauty, gentle piano and subtle strings and synths with surges of ominous force, resulting in a work that is replete with emotion, curiosity, and humanity. For fans of Nico Muhly, Ben Frost, Stars Of The Lid, Winged Victory Of The Sullen, and Fennesz. Features performances from The Elysian Quartet, Lucy Railton, and members of The Portico Quartet.

180 gram vinyl version. Snow Palms was initially conceived by composer David Sheppard (State River Widening, Ellis Island Sound, Phelan/Sheppard, etc) as a vehicle for instrumental pieces based around xylophones, glockenspiels, vibraphones, metallophones and other mallet instruments. Having set about more than two dozen such essays inspired by everything from Moondog's Elpmas marimba études to Arthur Lyman's faux-Polynesian exotica and Carl Orff's Schulwerk children's music, Sheppard hooked up with producer/arranger Chris Leary (Ochre) to sort the wheat from the chaff, adding layers of chamber orchestration and discrete electronic textures to many of the intricate, polyrhythmic superstructures. The duo then expanded the arrangements to embrace woodwinds, a string quartet, classical and electric guitar, harmonium, reed organ, prepared piano, omnichord and synths. The result is a mellifluous, chiming sound-world, ineffably marrying liquid gamelan soundscapes with English orchestral pastoralism, Krzysztof Komeda-esque soundtrack mystery, beguiling, Yann Tiersen-like themes and playful woodwind/strings/percussion face-offs infused with the spirit of Moondog.

180 gram vinyl version. A Pennsylvanian by birth, Keith Kenniff is an honors graduate of Boston's esteemed Berklee College Of Music, best known as the brains behind dulcet ambient/electronic practitioners Helios and the fingers on the ivories of post-classical piano minimalists Goldmund (the latter's music once described by no less an authority than Ryuichi Sakamoto as "so, so, so beautiful..."). A succession of albums under those aliases has made Kenniff the darling of discerning critics and his music has also been widely used in film, television and advertising, not least on the soundtrack to Harmony Korine's 2007 comedy-drama Mister Lonely and the trailer for the 2009 Academy Award-nominated Revolutionary Road, directed by Sam Mendes. In 2007, Keith formed the band Mint Julep with his wife Hollie. Mint Julep was designed as a conscious departure from Keith's previous projects. Keith's project Branches sees him return to his twinkling piano keys and the intensely atmospheric strings of his earlier solo work. Branches sounds like a journey that ebbs and flows through a wondrous forest, accelerating and slowing up to reveal beauty in all its little nooks and crannies. The album is a haunting and beautiful work that will appeal to fans of Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Nils Frahm and Hauschka.
