Isolée is highly regarded for his minimalist house with a catchy twist, and his rework of the bass-laden, atmospheric "We Mix at Six" is no different. Internationally acclaimed producer Ulrich Schnauss has a similar knack for transcending electronica and brings his expertise in ethereal soundscapes to a surprisingly throbbing, pop-instilled, epic version of "Kronsee." Brooklyn/LA-based housetronics wizard Portable Sunsets turns the warm, organic hum of "Nueva Cancion" into pure rythmatic poetry.

An epic sonic journey crossing classic Kompakt territory, from pop ambient to tuneful techno and house, Val Maira is not just the extended follow-up to Berlin's Dave DK's much-adored 2013 Palmaille 12" (KOM 277EP), but a sonic achievement in its own right; a work as delicate as it is candid, ultimately -- magically -- amounting to so much more than the mere sum of its parts. Named after a valley in the Italian mountains, Val Maira goes beyond admittedly impressive production skills, aiming for deeply personal expressiveness and emotional impact. From the tender dawning of opener "Fade In" to the solid dance chops of enticingly grooving cuts like "Smukke Lyde," "Nueva Cancion," and "Coolette," the album's preoccupation with the mutual dependencies of harmony and discord is quickly revealed; as Dave says, "I've tried to create an interlocking atmosphere of merriment and melancholy for the full duration of an album... I hope that one can hear a little bit of hope in the tracks, like everything's going to be fine... Although you can be incredibly creative thanks to limitless digital means, I think that the biggest challenge lies in creating a link to something human, generating feelings of warmth that reach and move the listener." Dave's meticulous planning and development ("before anything else, I need an idea and a general notion of the development of a track -- just jamming doesn't work well for me") translate into a deeply organic sound, apparent on such tracks as "Halma," "Veira," and "Whitehill," the latter featuring the distinctive vocals of Piper Davis (Stimming). One could describe these tracks as both intimate and sociable at the same time, a rare combination that might also account for the vivid sonic storytelling present in cuts like "Kronsee" or "We Mix At Six," the synesthetic retelling of a delayed party at the beaches of Barcelona, where someone spray-painted the title's vital information on a T-shirt swaying in the summer breeze. Heavily influenced by film soundtracks, drone sounds, and organic noise, Dave DK obviously feels very close to the perpetual atmospheric hum in between sounds, finding hooks in the tiniest nooks and crannies -- and to hear these 11 tracks lovingly intertwining their inspirations while seemingly creating nutrient-rich textures and meaningful melodies out of thin ether remains a riveting experience even after the nth playback.

Berlin's Moodmusic label kicks off a new mix CD series called "Retake." The first edition is being delivered by Moodmusic homeboy, Dave DK. The idea for the Retake series was born when label head Sasse had released the Starstyling mix on the occasion of Fashion Week 2009, including only releases from the label. Retake One contains some classic and new, unreleased Moodmusic tracks as well as influential material from the past 10 years. Besides Dave's edit of Sasse's "Wrapper" (Penner + Muder Remix), the mix features three new exclusive tracks that will also be released on a separate 12": Dave DK's "Will Be Gone," Axel Boman's "Cinquenta" and Citycobra's "Fresh Simple." To present an 80-minute overview of his DJ style, Dave has hand-picked some of his favorite tunes from his record box. To present a modern and organic sound, most tracks have been recorded from vinyl, partly from vinyl-only labels. With the focus being put not only on the music but also on the packaging and design, Retake One stands out in the present flood of mediocre media and music releases. Top designer Matthias Egil Last has been called in for the artwork. No less than two photo-shoots were necessary to come up with the final result. Last is also responsible for the design of the Watergate mix CD series. After his residencies at Tresor Club since 1999 as well as Panorama Bar since 2001, Dave DK has been a key figure in Berlin's music community. Spinning nowadays regularly throughout legendary clubs in Berlin, Dave is also playing gigs all around the world. Having released his first 12"s on Raum Musik in the late '90s, the albums Sensory Overload (2000, Müller Records) and Lights And Colours (2007, Moodmusic) were the highlights of his career which is now being crowned with Retake One. Other artists include: Ada, Lawrence, Holger Zilske, Daso, Ian Simmonds, Smallpeople, Chopstick & Johnjon, Jackmate, Superpitcher, Good Guy Mikesh, Christian Löffler, Sascha Funke, Horror Inc, DJ Koze, and Nina Kraviz.

Dave DK provides a taste of his upcoming full-length with two tracks and some major remix biz from Ada and Russ Gabriel. The epic, floating, almost Balearic feel of "Cinema Paraiso" fit Ada's remix hand perfectly, and is already in Groove's top 10. "Coimbra" is a rocking house belter with neat sample editing and a bass line juggling between low-end and ultra-low sub. Russ keeps much of the original intact, deepening the groove with funk beats and lush Detroit chords.

"Fresh from the actual Dave DK album Lights and Colours here we have the first remix pack of it in the form of Volar, a collaboration between Dave and Alex Krüger aka Tigerskin. Dave asked his favorite producers and got quite a bunch of superstars on one record. Miss Jools from London delivered a super dope housey but still techy workout with stabby synths and an amazing snare which blows your mind away. Next up is Holger Zilske aka Smash TV, Dave's longtime production partner and drinkin' buddy, to show some of his analog love to 'Volar.' The arsenal never ends it seems when he unleashes one of his trademark Oberheim pad-attacks with enough chunky deepness to rock any club. Last but not least we get Mr. Sascha Funke to deliver his trademark deep but techy workout which lends a string part from another Dave DK album track, 'Stargazer' to full effect. To fill the pack we included the original 'Volar,' which sounds amazing on a big system with a pulsing bass and throbbin' synth stabs."

Glamorous girls shake their booties to the massive drive of the drums, that pound the speakers to pieces, while the sophisticated young male at the bar pours his drink of desire as he watches the waitress on roller skates delivering dangerous drugs to the rich and famous, crowding the bathrooms around the world. House music has never been more star-spangled than here. On the B-side 'Rave Your Mind' got remixed by the well-known Dirt Crew, who added their tremendous touch of gold to this diamond of a dance tune.
