MOOD 200EP
|
Moodmusic is ready for release number 200! After more than twenty years of output and dedication the label is now proud to offer the next release. For Mood 200, the label gathered together three outstanding artists who follow up their first release under the name MKS. This is none other than label boss Sasse himself, Sandrino, and Langenberg. After the great success of the first MKS release it was only a matter of time until the three producers came back with some more black gold.

Alessio Pagliaroli catapulted to the DJ community after his Moodmusic debut "Distactions," featuring vocals from Jinadu and remixes from Frankey & Sandrino and Moodmusic head Sasse. Plays by Mano Le Tough, Dixon, Jimpster, and many more, "Distractions" was one of the highlights of 2013. Now Alessio is back with his second Moodmusic EP The Bass the Days, featuring vocals from Chicago-based Jerome Stokes. Chicago-inspired grooves wrapped around inspiring vocals and a jacking bass makes the original a true peak hour missile. Remixes comes courtesy of Alex Attias and acid-meister Freestyle Man.

DJ Tyree Cooper has been a proactive element of the music industry since the beginning of house music back in 1986. Now the veteran teams up with newcomer UK producer and DJ Bobby Starrr as the Berlin-based combo Jack The Box. Side A shows the rare craftsmanship Tyree Cooper and Bobby Starrr have to offer. Their different backgrounds emerge as their strength, resulting in an album that is truly Chicago-inspired house with a contemporary vibe. This is not the type of house music that you need to create a new buzzword for. This is solid house. Soulful, emotional, intense, refreshingly raw at times, and always respectful towards the history of electronic music. It reflects truly who Bobby and Tyree are as DJs and as people. It is honest. On stage, Jack The Box's undeniable charisma and enthusiasm for deep, Chicago-inspired yet contemporary house music and their flawless track record of successful parties has garnered Tyree Cooper and Bobby Starrr a distinguished reputation amongst a remarkably high caliber of international house veterans which they have invited to their regular parties at Kater Holzig and Tresor in Berlin. The duo translates their party spirit into their first album output in their collaborations with Baby Bambaata (Jungle Brothers), Lady Blacktronika, and Mandel Turner, keeping a balance between deep and sexy instrumental jams and full-on party house.

Jay West from Argentina is now a part of the Moodmusic family. The EP starts with "Blame the Music," featuring swinging beats, almost disco bass and a sunshine-filled vocal. "Down" features Victor Simonelli-style keys and a bouncy bassline, and then low-slung "In & Out," has some serious West Coast mushroom influences. To end, the catchy little "Mean Machine" finally brings a smile to your face.

Maurice Aymard delivers two original productions with singer Yetta in his distinct, slow-disco meets tech style. Deep vocals are layered on top of a solid groover with an almost Balearic feel, while firmly keeping the groove tightly locked. Remixes comes courtesy of Joyce Muniz and Craig Torrance & Finn Casey. While Joyce Muniz delivers a version for the deeper floors with her "Ilegard Remix," her "Dejando Remix" is perfect peak-hour fun. The Torrance & Casey gives the original a slightly more electronic feel.

Double LP version. Starting in 2004 with Made Within the Upper Stairs of Heaven and 2008 with Toinen, Sasse Lindblad has a tendency for symmetry, and now with the release of Third Encounter in 2012, this album has been worth the wait. Analog synthesizers, sequencers and tape decks are something which are widely used in today's electronic music, but it is the mixture of the old and new -- keeping the tradition of live jams instead of pre-defined arrangements, choosing high standards in fidelity but keeping the rough feel to it -- these elements together keep the sound of Sasse one step ahead of the competition, and it is why he is considered one of the most consistent producers in the scene. While "Fingers Inc" and "707 Heaven" pay homage to the golden era of Detroit and Chicago house, songs like "Analog City" and "Fantazy" bring memories of the mid-'90s Sasse material, true deep house as it used to be done. While "Alpha" and "Der Groove" take a naked live-jam approach to how to abuse analog goodies, "Low Slove" and "Treat Me" are raw sample-based tunes, perfect for a late night DJ set. Third Encounter showcases the 20 past years of Lindblad as a musician, DJ and sound engineer -- one who has seen most of the modern musical styles evolve and dissolve.

Luomo aka Vladislav Delay, Sistol, Uusitalo -- under a raft of names Finnish artist Sasu Ripatti has in the past experimented with ambient, broken beat, glitch as well as grooves and house music with soulful vocals, working with Scissor Sisters, Black Dice, Apparat, Craig Armstrong, Massive Attack, Robert Owens and Towa Tei. Luomo is about experimenting with pop music, a big influence for Ripatti, and bringing it into a fusion of house, disco and electronica. PLUS is Luomo's fifth album, taking the songwriting abilities of Ripatti to a new level, dwelling deep into first generation Chicago house and the pop sensibilities of '80s London, coupled with his impeccable crossover pop appeal. Never going for a one formula approach, PLUS has a distinct Luomo sound -- hypnotic, sexy and delicately insistent, rhythms following a self-movement and never standing still. Conquering the world of electronics with a hi-tech approach, PLUS grabs the listener mostly because of the soul infused into the works. Sometimes cold and brittle, at other times warm and ductile, the deeply-layered backgrounds make way for outstanding vocal performances which are this time credited to the cryptically-named Chicago Boys, a boy group of more or less known vocalists. Songs like "Good Stuff" and "Shy" are pure pop-bliss, while "Form In Void" and "Twist" shimmer in glacial electronics and gliding synths, all keeping the focus on the organic vocals to extend the album's scope and reach far beyond expectations. The less song-focused, synth-driven tunes like "Medley Through" and "How You Look" are undoubtedly reflecting the early Luomo sound from Vocal City (2000) and The Present Lover (HUUME 70202CD, 2003), and combined with his finest songwriting makes a cohesive album which actually can and should be listened to as one whole piece.

Berlin's Moodmusic label kicks off a new mix CD series called "Retake." The first edition is being delivered by Moodmusic homeboy, Dave DK. The idea for the Retake series was born when label head Sasse had released the Starstyling mix on the occasion of Fashion Week 2009, including only releases from the label. Retake One contains some classic and new, unreleased Moodmusic tracks as well as influential material from the past 10 years. Besides Dave's edit of Sasse's "Wrapper" (Penner + Muder Remix), the mix features three new exclusive tracks that will also be released on a separate 12": Dave DK's "Will Be Gone," Axel Boman's "Cinquenta" and Citycobra's "Fresh Simple." To present an 80-minute overview of his DJ style, Dave has hand-picked some of his favorite tunes from his record box. To present a modern and organic sound, most tracks have been recorded from vinyl, partly from vinyl-only labels. With the focus being put not only on the music but also on the packaging and design, Retake One stands out in the present flood of mediocre media and music releases. Top designer Matthias Egil Last has been called in for the artwork. No less than two photo-shoots were necessary to come up with the final result. Last is also responsible for the design of the Watergate mix CD series. After his residencies at Tresor Club since 1999 as well as Panorama Bar since 2001, Dave DK has been a key figure in Berlin's music community. Spinning nowadays regularly throughout legendary clubs in Berlin, Dave is also playing gigs all around the world. Having released his first 12"s on Raum Musik in the late '90s, the albums Sensory Overload (2000, Müller Records) and Lights And Colours (2007, Moodmusic) were the highlights of his career which is now being crowned with Retake One. Other artists include: Ada, Lawrence, Holger Zilske, Daso, Ian Simmonds, Smallpeople, Chopstick & Johnjon, Jackmate, Superpitcher, Good Guy Mikesh, Christian Löffler, Sascha Funke, Horror Inc, DJ Koze, and Nina Kraviz.

Taken from their album Same Monkeys Different Zoo (MOOD 012CD), here are three single cuts by Nils Penner and John Muder. "Let The Music Play" is already a hot-rodded missile in the DJ boxes of Sascha Funke, Dave DK and Sasse. "Time Has Come" is a deep vocal-driven track to nail the floor, with a punctuated vocal hook and filtered synth lines, building into a real late-night chugger.

Sasse & James Flavour continue the assault on the floors with another bomb on Moodmusic. "The Right Way" keep the vibes alive with dirty, pushing drums, an insistent vocal sample and some genuine old school love once the bass drops. For remix duties the mighty Tony Lionni takes the original's nagging vocal and builds a solid base of 909 drums and Detroit-influenced keys for an orgasmic deephouse chugger.

This is the debut full-length release from Berlin/Hamburg duo Penner + Muder. Nils Penner and John Muder produced their first 4-track demo CD in August 2007. Produced in the Suol Studios in East-Berlin for fun rather than with a full-blown business plan, Sasse signed 2 tracks of this demo for his Moodmusic imprint. Are You Lost (MOOD 065EP) became Penner + Muder's first vinyl 12" release. It got great reactions from the DJ community and the B-side "Millennium Falcon" was picked by electro-maestro Oliver Huntemann himself for his mix compilation Play 02! Live At Rex/Paris. Release-wise, the guys kept it slow and focused on quality rather than quantity. Same Monkeys Different Zoo is the result and sees the duo draw on their solo output (Nils and his Wazi Wazi imprint and John's Johjon alias and Suol imprint) as well as vast knowledge of classic deep house sounds to create something fresh, varied and essential. From the opening keys of the piano-led intro and first full track "Let The Music Play," there's a beautiful and slightly melancholic thread throughout. This is a house album, however, and groove does not suffer as the stripped-back drum&vox of "All About You" aptly proves. Whether it be the dubby feel of "Sunset Blvd" or the future soul of "Time Has Come," Same Monkeys Diffferent Zoo is bristling with emotion and even in tracks like the decidedly austere "Solitary Movement" (with Muder's long-term friend/label partner Chopstick) there's a real sense of feeling. This impassioned theme culminates in the stunning "Are You Lost," a future classic in the making. Balancing melody with groove, melancholy with uplift and dancefloor sensibilities with a home listening vibe is a rare feat but Penner + Muder have pulled it off and have done so with a heavily song-based LP -- a testament to their talent if ever there was one.

This is the second volume of Lil Tony's Raw Trax series of releases. Tony has been caned by everyone from Luciano to DJ Hell, and his raw grooves cut the crap and move people. "Solid State" takes the classic Detroit-influenced drum machine vs. piano theme a step forward -- an impeccable jam of 15 minutes with the beat keeping the pace. "Karamba" is a dry, tight, driven tech-workout -- a perfect mix-tool for the deeper techno and house sets.

Moodmusic presents the first vinyl cuts from Nick Chacona's debut album Love In The Middle (MOOD 011CD). Starting with "Wait" featuring Brothers Vibe, it takes a deep, tech-y journey into different sides of house. "Turning And Tossing" is a disco influenced, marimba-driven belter that keeps the pace intact with a one-note bass line going thru a gateway of delay happiness. "Be Like Olive" is typical no-house-no-disco, but still having that early post-Paradise Garage, proto-house feeling.

This is the debut full-length by Brooklyn's Nick Chacona. Writing and producing the songs that make up Love In The Middle were a veritable outpouring of the house hero's emotions as channeled through the many genres that make up Nick's ever-evolving sound. From the cosmic disco of album-opener "Especial" (penned with frequent production partner Anthony Mansfield), to the futuristic boogie-pop of "The Fear" (featuring Sheffield's disco songstress Kathy Diamond); the raw house of "Wait" (featuring the inimitable Brothers Vibe on vocal duties); the gorgeously emotive, Mr. Fingers-inspired "Be Like Olive"; or the deep, bassbin-shaking dub of "Eskayelator," it's clear that Nick's equally at home producing myriad styles. Speaking of home, Nick called many a place just that throughout the recording process, and it was these varied locations that also shaped the album's eclectic sound. Berlin's vibrant club life, not to mention his friends Sasse and Dirt Crew's James Flavour helped to give the album that soundsystem-savvy oomph. San Francisco brought the sunshine, and the opportunity to collaborate with Anthony Mansfield. In between snowboarding sessions in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and taking in the autumn foliage in upstate New York, Nick found solace in the peaceful environs the countryside had to offer. The ethereal, hand-painted artwork is courtesy of Shanan Campanaro -- the "love" he found "in the middle" of making the album. From his recent remix of Fever Ray's "Seven"; to Greg Wilson's recent inclusion of his and Mansfield's disco bomb "Oh Snap!," to his new project Beg To Differ with The Wurst Music Co's label boss, Roy Dank; to this absolutely stunning debut, Chacona is at the top of his game.

This is the Barcelona-based, Sweden-born power duo of Marco Gegenheimer and Jens Rosengren aka Gegenheimer & Jenius. Both are active in the Spanish house scene with their label collective, Ourvision. "Basic Shape" has a tech-housey, almost early techno feel with phasing keys, dry drum-programming and a Detroitish big break. "Cadaqués" is housier, but still keeps the groove as a main theme. "IPS" is a classic, quality deep house track which shows the musical roots of these talented producers.

Moodmusic head-honcho and A&R-man Klas "Sasse" Lindblad brings you the first installment of a new co-operation between Moodmusic and their friends from Starstyling Worldwide, one of the more interesting fashion/design companies in Berlin. Compiled originally for the Starstyling "Hokus Fokus" show at Berlin's Fashion Week in the summer of 2009, Starstyling vs. Moodmusic takes you on a journey of unreleased gems and forthcoming goodies as well as special edits of some recent hits from Moodmusic, building a well-conceived DJ-mix of quality music that you should be used to hearing from the native Finn on dancefloors around the world. In the past 15 years, Moodmusic has been growing into one of the main players in European electronic house with a respectable artist roster of past, present and future stars of the scene, lovingly steered by Sasse through many different territories, while always staying true both to himself as well as to his artists. While the first releases took their lead from the twin poles of Detroit and Chicago, each new record has expanded the horizons of the label with wonderful results, also gathering a small but dedicated artist pool enhanced by guest appearances from the label's most talented friends and colleagues from all over the world. Artists in this compilation include: Stel, King Roc, Dave DK, Daso, Ada, Kiki & Sasse, Till Von Sein, Filippo Moscatello, Tigerskin, Dirt Crew, Penner+Muder, Lil Tony, Holger Zilske, Richard Davies, Nick Chacona, and Anthony Mansfield.
