"Raised in Harlem and the Bronx, Def Jef received his first true start when he relocated to Los Angeles and was discovered by Delicious Vinyl in the late 1980s. The influence of NYC hip-hop's old school had tagged along however. Jef's debut album, Just a Poet With Soul, wasn't the commercial worldwide hits that Young MC and Tone Loc had recorded for Delicious, but jams like 'Droppin' Rhymes on Drums' (which employs the late Etta James on vocals), 'God Made Me Funky' and 'Give It Here' made it a stand out favorite on the left coast at the time. Jef, alongside trusty hit makers The Dust Brothers, is at his most interesting and conscious on the excellent sociopolitical offerings 'Black to the Future' and 'Downtown,' but even when it comes to his more standard NYC bred braggin' & boastin' style of rhymes, 'Poet With Soul' is just as exhilarating and relentlessly funky. Delicious Vinyl finally blows the dust off this gem delivering an extended version, with disc two sporting 16 bonus tracks; 12" only remixes, edits, non-album cuts and instrumentals previously never available on compact disc. The original jewel case has also been stepped up to a 6 panel digipak thats includes previously unpublished photographs and artwork."
