"The lauded krautrocking, global groove ensemble's first album on maverick producer Madlib's label. The late Christian Burchard, who founded the Embryo ensemble in 1969, loved the slogan Auf Auf, German for 'Up, Up', or 'Keep On Going'. Anyone with anything more than a passing interest in the German krautrock scene of the 1970s and 1980s knows that Burchard followed that intent, all around the world, tirelessly seeking out new sounds and inspirations and creating a catalog of music unlike most anything else the world has ever heard. Madlib has often said Embryo is his favorite rock band. Of course the hip-hop-producer-with-the-deepest-musical-knowledge knows Embryo is more than just a rock band -- but, for the purposes of these notes, let's keep it simple. When Marja Burchard, Christan's daughter, who grew up with Embryo and toured with them for years, took the reins of the ensemble after Christian's death in 2018, she started recording what would become this album, over the course of two years, finishing it in the throes of the Covid pandemic in 2020. She approached Madlib and Egon, who had, years back, visited and jammed with Christian Burchard, and Embryo musicians Uve Mullrich, Roman Bunka and Jan Weissenfeldt, in a Bavarian wine cellar, with the idea to issue Auf Auf on Madlib Invazion. The reply was a resounding, definitive 'yes'. So here is Marja's take on the Embryo ethos, continuing with her father's intrepid style, and leading the band in her own style. Auf Auf ranges from the deep, free-form jazz of 'Alphorn Prayer' to modal music from Afghanistan on 'Baran' to psychedelic-tinged jazz-rock of the title track Joining Marja are those like Embryo veterans Bunka, on oud and guitar, and Karl Hector and the Malcouns/Whitefield Brothers/Poets of Rhythm producer and guitarist Jan Weissenfeldt and others, including important players on the global scene from Afghanistan and Morocco."

Schneeball present a reissue of Embryo's La Blama Sparozzi, originally released in 1982. Remastered, new artwork (gatefold cover instead of cardboard box packaging). Schneeball Records, founded in 1976, has had a lasting impact on music in Germany with its records for at least a decade. In 1981, Embryo's La Blama Sparozzi was created: A milestone in Embryo's new concept after the huge success of Embryo's Reise which brought the band cult status in the alternative scene. However, the success led to serious ideological disputes among the musicians: what is the value of success in relation to joy in playing and creativity? These internal differences then led to the separation of the Dissidenten. On top of that, it was also an artistic frontal attack on the former colleagues and a radical departure from trend thinking in line with the market. In retrospect, since this point in time at the latest, one can speak of a development towards "Weltmusik with Munich touch" (World music with Munich touch), which many musicians still orientate themselves on and refer to in their work. Another prerequisite for success is compositional work based on joint improvisation. La Blama Sparozzi can convey that: even taking on a connecting role between artists from different continents becomes possible and is one of the most exciting documents on this double-LP. Just as no concert should be the same, this album draws on diversity. Listening habits can be changed, horizons broadened, prejudices reduced: this was the pedagogical approach of the restless composer and band leader Christian Burchard, who traveled to three continents in just a few years with constantly changing line-ups.

LP version. Color vinyl. 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. Loneos Editions present a reissue of Embryo's Rache, originally released in 1971. The second album by Christian Burchard and alumni Embryo was released in 1971 on the prestigious United Artists imprint, only a year after their debut. A significantly progression and the first venture in the realm of the ethnic/world-rock fusion that would come to be their trademark. The gang from Munich flew over a series of packed jam showing their authentic passion for the Middle East. Combining a series of progressive numbers, still miles away from their British counterpart, the band opened up for a series of transcendental and wicked numbers, pushing the boundaries of the '70s counterculture. While it was some eastern-blues rapture or a post-Coltrane collage in the vein of the classy melody of A Love Supreme (1965), the band built his foundation while facing an ancient future. That was the beginning of a whole era where freedom was the keyword.

The Munich based band Embryo was founded in 1969. Opal was their first album. Released on the OHR label in 1970, the band led by Christian Burchard combined numerous genres into a huge crossover project. Jazz-rock, folk, blues, soul, contemporary music, and world music. Even if Opal doesn't sound as perfect as later recordings, the album is considered very influential. Embryo themselves describe their style as follows: Pop music is the appropriate level of communication for Embryo, just as they found their origins in all musical styles, from folk blues to jazz soul to serious and contemporary music, the musical past of Embryo's musicians is also connected to such different styles. The group has always remained true to this motto: Always open to new things and gladly committed to improvisation. In the 50th year of the release, the original magnetic tapes have been re-recorded and carefully remastered.

Double LP version. Includes CD. 100 years of dada and a half-century of Embryo - Two good reasons for Embryo to celebrate and a perfectly good reason for a new record. "Do It", one of the slogans of the beatniks and hippies of the sixties, has been and still is a statement enormously important to Embryo. Inspired by dada, the group has changed the slogan to "It Do" and has named their new album accordingly. The Embyro collective has been active for almost fifty years, always led by their musical leader and visionary Christian Burchard. That Burchard energy has doubled now, as his daughter Marja, who stood on stage with the group the first time when she was only 11 years old, has now stepped into the spotlight. The multi-instrumentalist lives and breathes the "Do It" concept with the same conviction as her father Christian. On It Do the group for the first time has recorded songs composed by her. Embryo played right after Jimi Hendrix at his last live show at the Fehmarn Open Air in 1970. They founded the first artist-run independent label in Germany, Schneeball. They played with international musical legends such as Charlie Mariano and Mal Waldron. Embyro were one of the first European bands to combine jazz and rock music. Later they became pioneers of the then still un-named world music genre, with countless travels through Africa and Asia where they were joined by local musicians. Always on the move, always incorporating new players, the band has been a force in the music scene for almost 50 years now. "Embryo - real krautrock based in Germany, connected worldwide." -- John Peel. "Embryo is not so much a musical style, but an attitude. It's about the serious study of traditional music. And it's the wish to bring the world together via music." -- Nick McCarthy, Franz Ferdinand (with Embryo from 1999-2002). "Embryo - they are these crazy creative musicians playing really weird stuff." -- Miles Davis.

2013 release. Africa, originally released in 1992 on Materiali Sonori, may be a late entry in the Embryo catalog but it is one of their most ambitious and truly progressive albums to date. As the name implies, the Munich group not only draws influence from the continent to their south, but also employs an African percussion ensemble on many tracks. A hypnotic and beautiful affair reissued for the first time since its original release. Presented on LP with CD included.

2013 release. Despite being released in 1971, only a year after Embryo's 1970 debut (MIR 100706LP), Embryo's Rache shows the band progressing significantly toward the ethnic/world-rock fusion that would come to be their stock in trade. Though still firmly in the jazz/Krautrock realm, the album contains deep Eastern flourishes that separate it from the standard progressive crowd. A stunning album from Christian Burchard's Munich group reissued here with a bonus track, "Back to Africa," recorded live in 1973. Presented on LP with CD included.

Effortlessly fusing Krautrock with jazz and ethnic music, Embryo were unparalleled in the world of progressive fusion, and 1984's Zack Glück is one of their most ambitious and rewarding LPs. Reissue of the third LP by Embryo (following Opal & Rache), originally released by United Artists in 1972. "With Sigi Schwab on guitar. Rhythmic space-rock fusion, macro and micro-rhythms and soprano sax, and Asian stringed instruments. A quote from a German magazine at the time proclaimed, 'Embryo are, without question, one of a kind rhythm group in Germany. Wouldn't I know that they are from Munich, I'd say that they are the first Afro-Asian rock band.' The 20-minute bonus track was recorded at the third Essen Pop & Blues Festival in 1970 and until now has been unreleased."

First release of this Radio Bremen broadcast, from master tapes, recorded 9/23/71. Packaged with typically elaborate 32-page booklet of notes & photos. Recorded shortly after the release of their 2nd album, at the high school Leibnitzplatz. "Trying to describe the music of those days, there had been lots of spontaneous improvisations. There were some fixed riffs mostly guitar and bass, and then small themes were superimposed by the wind players... Very many musicians performing with Embryo came from the school of Mal Waldron, jazz pianist and composer was and is a very important representative of modern international jazz."
