Reissue, originally released in 1966. The singer-songwriter and pianist Nina Simone came to prominence in the late 1950s after she signed to the Bethlehem label for her debut album, Little Girl Blue. Her move to Colpix Records, the audio subsidiary of Columbia Pictures, allowed her near total artistic control of her material and her lengthy tenure with the company brought plenty of popular album releases. The 1966 oddity Nina Simone With Strings was issued by Colpix a couple of years after she left the company to begin recording for Philips; a strange mix of live recordings and studio outtakes, released without her knowledge or permission where the presence of orchestral strings on several tracks gives the album its title and overriding theme. Clear vinyl; numbered.

Reissue, originally released in 1963. The versatile singer, songwriter, pianist, musical arranger, and civil rights activist Nina Simone was one of the most iconic of all jazz performers. Operating in a range of genres, from folk, blues, and rhythm 'n' blues to pop, gospel, and classical, Simone issued over 40 albums during a long and successful career, though bipolar disorder dramatically affected her later years. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, she was one of eight children in a poor black family. Colpix Records' 1963 release, Nina's Choice, was titled in reference to the fact that Simone chose the entire contents, drawing from a range of pop, folk, blues, and show tunes, all interpreted and delivered in her uniquely expressive style. Clear vinyl; numbered.

The Amazing Nina Simone -- originally released in 1959 -- was Nina Simone's first album for Colpix Records. The album contains a variety of material, including jazz, gospel, and folk songs. Compared to her debut, which showcased Simone's piano playing ability in addition to her singing, the piano was downplayed on Amazing in favor of string arrangements. The orchestra is led by famous conductor Bob Mersey (staff arranger/composer for CBS television and Columbia Records and also their musical director).

This is the epic Town Hall concert held by Nina Simone (with Jimmy Bond on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums) in New York on September 15th 1959 and originally released as her second album for Colpix Records. The repertoire included both traditional material and original songs written by Nina herself, plus some beautiful renditions of standards such as Gershwin's "Summertime" and Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow". Even though some of the songs featured in the concert were subsequently re-recorded in a studio for the album release.

Wax Love presents a reissue of Nina Simone's At The Village Gate, originally issued in 1962. Nina Simone is one of those rare artists whose greatest work might have been her live recordings; a consummate interpreter of others' songs, it was on live recordings that she really stretched out her sound and truly found her most powerful voice. This 1962 live recording was her third live album for Colpix and the loose, swinging trio that backs her perfectly complements her versions of classics like "House of the Rising Sun", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and Olatunji's "Zungo". A perfect live recording from one of the masters.

Wax Love present a reissue of The Amazing Nina Simone, originally released in 1959. Nina Simone's second LP, The Amazing Nina Simone, was her first for the Colpix label who would release most of her early material. A collection of blues, jazz, gospel, and folk music, mostly made up of standards and traditional tunes and favoring string arrangements to the piano work Simone is most known for, The Amazing Nina Simone is a beautiful and unique album when compared to the rest of her body of work. Showcasing her beautiful voice on legendary songs like "Willow Weep For Me" and the Rodgers/Hammerstein standard "It Might As Well Be Spring", this is a gorgeous album from one of the most powerful and idiosyncratic performers of the mid-20th century.

Wax Love present a reissue of Nina Simone's Nina At Newport, originally released in 1960. When this album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960, Nina Simone had just had her first Top 20 hit with "I Loves You, Porgy", but the "Porgy" found here (written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, most famous for "I Can't Give You Anything But Love") is actually a continuation of Gershwin's original version of the story. Other highlights include "Flo Me La", an African work chant, and "Little Liza Jane", an African American folk song. A truly marvelous live performance from one of the most original voices in 20th century music.

2015 repress. "On May 12, 1963, Miss Simone gave her first concert in Carnegie Hall. Her impeccable piano mastery and her distinctive vocal stylings thrilled those present in the famed landmark of musical events (...) From her vast repertoire, including many numbers that have become 'her' songs, either because she introduced them or because she had recorded the definitive version, Miss Simone compiled an exceptional program for her Carnegie Hall concert. Some of the numbers in this album have been done on disks before, but none have ever sounded as well." --from the original liner notes; The COMPLETE Nina Simone at Carnegie Hall double LP in ACV (Audiophile Clear Vinyl) quality with an exceptional number of bonus tracks (side 3 and side 4).

Two absolutely killer R&B sides from the high priestess of soul, Nina Simone. "Come On Back, Jack" is Nina's answer to Ray Charles' smash "Hit the Road Jack," using a similar riff to the original version and packing just as much dancefloor impact. "Work Song," perhaps the quintessential jazzy mod number, was recorded by dozens, scores, perhaps hundreds of other singers, but few injected it with as much heart and sass as Ms. Simone. The version here was previously available on LP only.

"1971's Here Comes The Sun follows the success of her previous studio album, To Love Somebody, with another batch of pop songs, from the Beatles and Dylan to Jerry Jeff Walker and Paul Anka. Fantastic new and adventurous arrangements, along with Nina Simone's unique vocal interpretations, keep this from just being a covers record."

2016 repress. "Nina Simone's first album is quite simply one of the finest debuts in the history of recorded music. Backed here only by Jimmy Bond on bass and Albert Heath on drums, this stripped down trio format brings Nina's considerable talents (as a classically trained pianist) to the fore. Her soulful versions of songs like 'Mood Indigo,' 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' and 'I Loves You, Porgy' have all become standards in their own right and Nina the declared idol of many." 180 gram vinyl exact repro reissue, originally released in 1966 on Philips. "This album was apparently a bit of a pastiche of leftovers from sessions for Nina Simone's four previous albums on Philips. But you'd never guess from listening; the material is certainly as strong and consistent as it is on her other mid-'60s LPs. As is the case with most of her albums of the time, the selections are almost unnervingly diverse, ranging from jazz ballads to traditional folk tunes ('Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair') to the near calypso of 'Why Keep on Breaking My Heart' to the somber, almost chilling title track. Highlights are two outstanding pop-soul numbers written by the pre-disco Van McCoy ('Either Way I Lose,' 'Break Down and Let It All Out') and 'Four Women,' a string of searing vignettes about the hardships of four African-American women that ranks as one of Simone's finest compositions." -- All Music Guide

2021 restock. 180 gram vinyl reissue, printed inner sleeve. "This unusual record from 1972 is Nina Simone's statement on the Vietnam War. The cover is a collage of news clippings from the conflict, and the song selection and arrangement, though dealing with matters more spiritual than political, reflect the events of the day. The entire first side consists of a powerhouse medley of George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' and a poem by David Nelson called 'Today Is a Killer,' set to music by Simone. The Harrison song is transformed into a sweaty gospel workout that takes its rhythm from the Capitols' 'Cool Jerk' and its call-and-response vocal arrangement from the Reverend James Cleveland. Simone artfully alternates the celebratory romp with slow, somber passages featuring her improvised lyrics and passages from the Nelson poem. Even as it passes the 18-minute mark, the medley never loses power, and it remains one of Simone's finest moments. After the triumph of the first side, the flip is only a slight letdown. "Poppies" is melodically vague, but Simone's strong delivery sells it, while George Harrison's 'Isn't It a Pity' gets an intense, drawn-out treatment, mostly featuring just Simone's piano and voice. The cover of Emergency Ward! claims it was recorded in concert, but only the first side appears to be live, and even that is riddled with sloppy edits. Though it is one of the stranger records in the Simone oeuvre, Emergency Ward! is consistently thrilling." -- All Music Guide

2013 repress. "One of Nina Simone's finest recordings, this 1959 Colpix LP features the unique singer/pianist performing classic versions of 'Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair,' 'The Other Woman,' and 'Wild Is the Wind.' With supportive work from bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Al 'Tootie' Heath, she also sounds fine on a few instrumentals. 'Summertime' is performed twice, once as a vocal. From the start of her career, Nina Simone carved out her own unique niche, meshing together her classical piano technique with folk singing, civil rights protest lyrics and jazz. All of those elements are in evidence on this highly recommended set."
