Formed by a group of Salem junior high school friends in the wake of the British Invasion, The Sound Barrier evolved from earlier incarnations known as The Spectrums and The Zounds. Led by guitarist Paul Hess and drummer Larry Davis, the band cut the driving garage classic "Hey Hey" alongside the infectious "(My) Baby's Gone," released on their own Zounds label in 1967. Both tracks were recorded at their friend Mark Scheuring's makeshift studio with whom the Sound Barrier guys ended up forming heavy psych band Noah in the early '70s.
