2016 repress. "When Marshall McLuhan proposed his idea to create an audio companion piece to his landmark 1967 book The Medium is the Massage, no one quite knew what to expect. The book itself brilliantly captured McLuhan's theories on media and technology, arguing that the medium by which information is transferred to people was more important than the actual content being relayed. McLuhan hoped that an audio recording would help give greater depth to his theories, and in the late 1960s he and producer John Simon went to work on a record of the same name. Using audio clips of McLuhan speaking, often interrupted by discordant sounds and other voices interjecting, they created a thought-provoking, sometimes whimsical patchwork of sounds and ideas that illustrated the complex relationship between people, media, and technology. Over 40 years since its release, The Medium is the Massage continues to challenge listeners to think about media and communications in new ways. Five Day Weekend is proud to present the definitive vinyl edition of this rare and important album. Included in the LP package is a 20-page 8"x11" booklet featuring original essays by DJ Spooky and Michael Vasquez, a reproduction of a print by Winston Smith, and a collection of previously unpublished photos from the original recording sessions."

"When cut loose on the Rudy Ray Moore/Dolemite catalog to put together the release that came to be known as OhNoMite, Oh No was like the clichéd kid in a candy store. With so much material to pull from it was inevitable that some cuts couldn't be squeezed into the final OhNoMite project, some would with different mixes and some were never fully realized. Oh No turned this material over to his alter-ego, Dr. No, for the further finishing touches for this all instrumental outing. The result is contained here on Dr. No's Kali Tornado Funk. Coming at you with fists flying this full length features instrumentals and alternate mixes from the OhNoMite record, thoroughly funk filled blasts that didn't find their way into the final OhNoMite project and much more. Kali Tornado Funk is the total experience; the Doctor's prescription for those whose asses just don't move enough, a recommended treatment for those whose ailment is a lack of soul. Side effects include having a thoroughly good time and in rare instances a desire to perform karate moves."

Music that inspired the cult film. "For the first time in the quarter-decade since its release, classic cult hip hop documentary Big Fun in the Big Town is finally being released to the public on DVD - now, the music inspiring the film is getting its own shine with this special limited release also from Five Day Weekend. The groundbreaking documentary explores the different sides of hip hop's lineage with depth and precision, and the ten tracks featured on this soundtrack bring that history to blaring sonic life. Just as the subjects of Big Fun in the Big Town show hip hop in its eager, gritty infancy, the music inspiring the film reveals a time where being the reigning ladies man of the scene could still mean living in your grandmother's basement. From rapper KRS-One's declaration of the birthplace of hip hop in Boogie Down Production's 'South Bronx' to Mantronix's party jam 'Bassline,' this album embodies the same potential of hip hop displayed in the film - dynamic, fresh, and most importantly, fun."

"If you think the title of this DVD sounds like a struggling foreigner's attempt to describe his trip to New York City during the formative years of a cultural revolution, you would be pretty much spot on in your assessment. Filmed in New York City in 1986, Big Fun in the Big Town chronicles the emerging cultural movement called 'hip-hop', through the lens of an upstart Dutch filmmaker named Bram Van Splunteren. Armed with nothing more than a camera crew and vague understanding of the English language, Van Splunteren's fearless excursion into the world of American hip hop led him to the gritty landscapes of Harlem, South Bronx, and the Lower East Side during the peak years of the 1980s crack epidemic. As many would come to learn, this backdrop proved to be the incubator to what became a breeding ground for hip hop pioneers. Van Splunteren happened to be in the right place at the right time. Putting his own personal safety at risk, Van Splunteren's travelled to remote locations in neighborhoods where no foreigners or outsiders were normally allowed. There he managed to capture the essence of that time and place, while also managing to attain interviews and footage with rap heavyweights and emerging artists many now refer to as legends. The amazing scenes contained herein will blow the minds of any self respecting fan of rap music; a 17 year old LL Cool J greeting Van Splunteren from the door step of his grandmother's apartment (where he still lived), the Mystery Crew out of Chicago who happened to be trying to snag a meeting with Russell Simmons outside the small first offices of Def Jam on the same day Van Splunteren happened to be interviewing him, DMC freestyling to and unreleased beat on the cassette deck of his brand new and first Cadillac, a still skinny Biz Markie beatboxing for Roxanne Shante on stage -- Van Splunteren managed to capture so many incredible moments in hip hop history and really encapsulated the era perfectly." "Peter Brown and Patrick Adams: two names as likely to create frenzy on the dance floor as an eBay auction are the P's of P&P Records. The P&P story started in the mid-sixties with Peter Brown leaving his rural home in Georgia for the hustle and bustle of Harlem NYC. It was not long before Peter met up with Patrick and their historic run onto the charts and dance floors began. Together Peter and Patrick put out a seemingly endless string of records on imprints such as P&P Records, Queen Constance, Golden Flamingo, Heavenly Star, Sound of New York, Hit Makers, PAP, Sound of the Universe etc. etc. etc. Now world renowned club DJ Spinna and Five Day Weekend have united and combined resources to present some of the rarest and most sought after disco and modern soul the world has to offer on Spinna vs. P&P Records. On this insane mix Spinna has mixed the most choice aural gems from the vast P&P catalog into 79 minutes of sonic bliss. These cuts sound fresher than ever at the hands of a DJ Spinna. Taking bits and pieces from the many genres offered under P&P's vast umbrella of music he makes the mix flow with a continuity that could only be provided by a DJ/ producer who understands the very soul of New York City."

"The producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist behind several Now-Again and Jazzman Records releases, Mr. Chop is the proprietor of Cheshire, UK based Ape Recording Studios -- one of the finest analog studios in the world, and a repository for vintage synthesizers, guitars, drums and gear sourced from the world over. Which brings us to Switched On, his homage to the great Moog-lead albums that proliferated in the wake of the synthesizer's invention in the late '60s and early '70s. But, unlike those records - like Dick Hyman's Age of Electronicus which contained one great synth-funk track amidst a series of soft pop hits, this album is all killer, and no filler. Mr. Chop tackles songs by the likes of Can, the JBs, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Smith via a still-futuristic blend of heavy drums and funky basslines by The Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson, and his own fuzzy guitars and cosmic keys."

"Now-Again Records, in association with Five Day Weekend, will be bringing you Switched On, the newest project from Mr. Chop. The producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist behind several Now-Again and Jazzman Records releases is the proprietor of Cheshire, UK based Ape Recording Studios, one of the finest analog studios in the world. Not to mention, it is a repository for vintage synthesizers, guitars, drums and gear sourced from the world over. Which brings us to Switched On, his homage to the great Moog-lead albums that proliferated in the late '60s and early '70s. Your first taste from Switched On is Chop's take on the Can classic 'Vitamin C.' The gang at Now-Again and Five Day Weekend could have just dropped the cut as a 12" but given the wealth of creativity from both camps something special seemed in order. Some would have said orange vinyl would be unique enough but to make the experience a bit more interesting this destined to be collectible vinyl will be coming as an orange vinyl 9 inch pressing."

"As if it were possible, Edan adds even further color to his newest release, Echo Party, with Edan's Echo Party Movie, an energetic visual expression of his music. Produced/directed by Tom Fitzgerald, Cut Chemist's go-to video man who works also for Cinefamily in L.A., Edan's Echo Party Movie is a fast-paced, retro conglomeration of unrelated and interesting video clips from the 60's, 70's and 80's that prove to be like a Sour Patch Kid for the eye. Cut in perfect harmony with Edan's music, the movie is an ideal synch for Echo Party's multi-elemental vibe where, using Traffic's extensive back catalogue of old school hip-hop, Edan mixes, reworks, and adds layers of his own instrumentation to create an eclectic blend of psychedlia and beats. The movie cuts in and out of old Indian/Bollywood films, spray painting graffiti artists, children operating computers, vintage ads, risqué cartoons, and everything in between. Debuted officially at the WFMU Record Fair, Edan's Echo Party Movie is a trip you don't want to miss. Each DVD cover is hand-stamped by the artist himself in one of five unique designs adding further to the artistic flair that could only be Edan's." NTSC format; aspect ratio: 1:33:1.

2010 release. "The history of cinema includes countless films that have remained, for a variety of reasons, in total obscurity. Sadly, many of the films that get 'lost' are the ones that really need to be found, and 80 Blocks from Tiffany's is one such film. Here is a film that has been marooned in an archive for 30 years and, despite a brief educational VHS release in 1985, it has gone largely unseen. Until now. Inspired by journalist Jon Bradshaw's Esquire Magazine article, Savage Skulls, Gary Weis, a filmmaker for Saturday Night Live, convinced SNL creator Lorne Michaels to help turn the concept into a feature-length documentary. Documenting the everyday activities of two South Bronx street gangs, the Savage Nomads and the Savage Skulls, the film is a glimpse into a different time, when the South Bronx was considered 'a land of nowhere.' The 80 Blocks from Tiffany's DVD is beautifully packaged, housed in a 40-page hard cover book within a slip case. DVD bonus materials include brand new never-before-seen interviews with Weis and director of photography Joan Churchill, while the accompanying book contains all new liner notes and Jon Bradshaw's Savage Skulls article in its entirety." NTSC all-region format; running time: 94 minutes.
