"'Throughout my long career as a record producer, I sought to unravel what I call the Mojo Mystery. The solution has evaded me. From time to time, I've heard a voice come from a female singer that so thrilled me, every other sound in the room faded away. I could hear nothing else but that voice. My spine tingled from top to bottom. Time stood still in that moment and I was unable to move. That is the sound of a talent so profound that you know this person will become a superstar. I would become obsessed with the idea of producing that vocalist and would set about doing so. The music business is unpredictable. Even when everything is done right, things go wrong, and that amazing potential superstar talent never gets heard or never gets the attention and glory it deserves. You have the right talent, the right songs, the right musicians; but a record deal never gets made. Or you have all of these elements plus the right deal. The record is released and nothing happens. Everyone blames everyone else for why the project failed. But at the end of the day, it just didn't happen. No one really knows why. I always say, the project just didn't have the right mojo. I recently decided that I will not let these talented women with such magnificent voices and styles pass into obscurity without ever being heard. You, my fans, deserve to hear the talent I was so fortunate to discover but was unable to bring to you before now. Get ready to be swept away as you fall in love with each and every one of them -- the Divas Without Diamonds. We're giving them their diamonds now.' --Hadley Murrell"

'The Arizona music scene during the sixties can easily be likened to its desert surroundings: The monotony of average and sometimes even good bands writing less than good and even average songs. Then one day you hear a band that knocks you out. Those are the kinds of bands that I had the opportunity to discover and produce that suddenly emerged out of garages and other little holes in walls ? wherever they could find a place to converge and create their music. I now have the honor and the privilege to present to you the bands that I think are Arizona's best garage bands from 1967 to 1970.' -- Hadley Murrell. "At an age when most of us were just listening to music, Hadley Murrell got involved. At 14 he started playing drums with The Carnations, and went on to work in radio, as well promoting shows and other live events. Much of what he made went towards studio time to produce the music heard in this collection. Often garage rock is under produced to its detriment. That's not the case here, Murrell recorded at Phoenix's Audio Records, other clients included Dwayne Eddy, Dyke & The Blazers and Waylon Jennings (among many others). And unlike many garage rock sides ? Hadley took his performers into the studio prepared and ready to lay down tracks as hot as the Arizona desert. In addition to music that captures a moment in time, the release features a 20 page booklet filled with the story of each of the groups included here along with period photography, show flyers and more."

"As a member of the revered '60s/'70s songwriting team Sultans of Soul, Eddie Horan's songs have been recorded by the likes of The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, and numerous other top recording artists. His compositions and lyrics are characterized by their ability to capture the essence of soul and funky disco with groovy melodies, soft, smooth vocals, and an overall warmth and breeziness that few other singer-songwriters have been able to mimic. Now in 2013, HDM Records presents a definitive collection of Eddie Horan's works: I'm Gonna Speak Out. Combining old classics and previously unheard gems of Horan's catalogue, I'm Gonna Speak Out hops from mood to mood with funky cuts like 'Who's Slipping Who Out the Back Door,' sweet-talk crooning like 'Losing You,' and heartfelt balladry like 'There's No One Else.' For fans of Horan's brand of deep soul there's no skipping this one."

"HDM label owner Hadley Murrell with the origin story on Penguin Feet and The Teardrop Kid: One day in 1977, I received a telephone call from an organization that was holding a fund raiser. They wanted me to record a 'doo wop' version of 'America the Beautiful' for their event. I proceeded to rehearse Black Ice in preparation for the session. Later that day, Eddie Horan came up to my office for a writing session we had scheduled. Eddie started clowning around and began to impersonate Geraldine Jones, a famous sassy, brazen and outspoken character Flip Wilson had created for his hit comedy television show. I jumped in and said, 'Larry, Move Your Hand.' Eddie looked at me, I looked at Eddie; that special look we had that said 'song.' On the following Saturday, Eddie and I finished writing the now classic song that was born from that silly, fun afternoon. I booked time to record 'America the Beautiful' the following Saturday. When that was finished, Eddie and I went to work with Ray Jackson, the arranger, and finished 'Larry' in two hours. Long story short, 'Larry Move Your Hand' was a hit, and is now a classic novelty record and one of Dr. Demento's favorites. Each time that the morning drive-time DJ's played the record, their phones rang off the hook with everybody wanting to know where they could get that record. Over the years, I've had many requests for more records from Penguin Feet and The Teardrop Kid. I cut several other tracks that remained in storage. An album was never released until now. Penguin Feet and The Teardrop Kid is all about fun. Get ready to have big fun."

"In the late 1970s, Liquid Blue's disco hit, 'Ain't That What You Want,' was played in every club from the west coast to the east coast as well as the big dance clubs all over Europe. Because of the popularity of 'Ain't That What You Want' on the dance floor, many people thought of Liquid Blue as only a disco band. But they were so much more. They could also rock and roll the house out and could meld disco with blue eyed soul. Many of their fans saw them the new Hall & Oates because they blended soul, rock, and disco together."

"Dipping back into Murrell's archive of quality output we now offer you Black Ice's 1982 self-titled release for LA's Montage label, available for the first time ever on compact disc. This is not to be confused with the group's debut of the same name. Once again Antone Curtis, Cleveland Jones, Frank Willis, Gerald Bell and Marcieal Holmes entered the studio with Mr. Murrell producing. Many consider this the groups strongest showing to date. However, the year was 1982 and being that the times and the public's tastes were changing the resulting full-length ended up being the group's swan song. In retrospect, the recording has stood the test of time with original issues of the vinyl going for hundreds whether the price is in dollars, pounds or euros."

"During the 1970s, veteran disco and R&B deejay and producer Hadley D. Murrell put together a roster of talented songwriters and performers under his HDM Records imprint out of Los Angeles. One of the label's most prominent artists was the disco/funk outfit, Black Ice, featuring a five-man roster with a range of vocal talents. Produced mostly by Murrell himself, Black Ice released their debut album, Black Ice in 1977, with the lead single 'Shakedown (Parts 1 & 2) achieving moderate success on the R&B charts. With songs like 'I Feel The Weight (Over Losing You)' and 'I Want You Back,' the members of Black Ice display a harmonious disco and R&B aesthetic that marked an era in black music and American music at large. While the group would never reach large-scale commercial success, Black Ice is most certainly an exemplary moment in late 1970s soul production that fans will enjoy for decades to come."

"As the final album released on producer Hadley D. Murrell's HDM Records, Black Ice's I Judge The Funk is the perfect showpiece to the sound of an era. The follow-up to the group's 1977 self-titled debut album, I Judge The Funk finds Black Ice exploring a more expansive, orchestrated sound than before. Building on the disco format developed on 1977's Black Ice, I Judge The Funk demonstrates growth in the group's commitment to making sonically satisfying records. Notable tracks include the percussion-happy 'Play More Latin Music,' while the group's softer dynamics are showcased on tracks such as 'Postcard Love Affair' and 'You're Always On My Mind.' Filled with dance cuts and ballads alike, I Judge The Funk is an excellent listen for Black Ice fans and newcomers alike."

"One of a handful of records released on late-1970s Los Angeles imprint HDM Records, Eddie Horan's 1978 album Love The Way You Love Me is a classic example of what happens when soul meets disco. The title track, which reached #91 on the R&B charts in 1978, is warm and breezy like the first day of spring -- soft keys and flutes build effortlessly into Horan's chorus, and the rest of the album follows suit. Between uptempo disco cuts like 'Turn My World Back Around' or 'Can't Do Without You' and smooth ballads such as 'Concert By The Sea,' soul listeners of all kind will find something to enjoy about this late disco-era hidden gem."
